The Globe reports that the DL move
is due to a concern that 1) Buchholz' tender middle finger as a result of a torn fingernail, needs to heal; and 2) the possibility he could alter his delivery and injure a shoulder or an elbow if he pitched with it. ...With J.D. Drew's wrist hurting, the Red Sox called up outfielder Jonathan Van Every, who will make his major league debut in center field today.
Buchholz said he ripped the nail across the top of his right middle finger while throwing a 2-seam fastball warm-up pitch before the start of the second inning of his last start. He said he didn't tell anyone about it, hoping to be able to get through the game. ...
This sounds a lot like a make-a-roster-spot injury to me. Especially with Colon on the way.

ReplyDeleteNot a chance, Sarah.
Check out this picture of the proper way to throw a curveball. If Clay's right middle finger is tender, he won't grip the ball properly and that will screw up his mechanics. Which is the #2 that Redsock listed in his paragraph from the Globe.
It sounds really dumb, but it's like having a pitcher go on the DL due to a blister.
Why do we call up a guy to play CF? Can't we just play Coco and Ellsbury? What am I missing?
ReplyDeleteCoco is not well right now -- upset stomach -- and we need someone right away with Drew out.
ReplyDelete*titter* a broken nail? omg!
ReplyDeletej/k/j/k/!!
Van Every is the 34th player to play for the Sox this year. Seeing how this is only the 43rd game that is a lot of players already.
