ReplyDeleteManny Ramirez is back in the lineup today and batting cleanup, while second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who is 0 for 12 on the homestand and batting .149 (10 for 67) in his last 17 games, has been given the day off.
The Sox have not scored in their last two games against Seattle, losing 8-0 Friday night after falling 1-0 to the M's in Seattle on May 28. Tim Wakefield, the loser in that game, goes today against Miguel Batista. ...
Tito Francona comes into today's game needing one win to match Jimy Williams' total of 414 as Sox manager. Jimy ranks fifth on the team's all-time list.

ReplyDeleteFrancona did it AGAIN!! Why is Wakefield the designated pitcher who gets all the subs? He already gets Cash instead of Tek---Ortiz is out, Ellbury is out. Ok, it's time to give Dustin a break from his slump. But why take out Lowell too? Two straight games where Wakefield has pitched well with no run support, and this is what he gets? Ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteGirardi just left Petitte in to give up TEN runs. Yeesh. Francona doesn't even let Wakefield do THAT. And against KC!
ReplyDeleteYankee Bias/ Kevin Kenedy Follies, Part XXXV: yesterday, Kennedy pronounced that the Yankees were only 6 games out and "would be fine." I wonder what his definition of "fine" is?
I meant to go back and check and see if Wake really gets a weaker lineup -- or if the lack of runs scored for him has tainted or memories.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see that, Allan. The diminishment of the line-up is both offensive and defensive: witness Youkilis' juggle at third, which cost Wakefield a doubleplay and possibly a shut-out.
ReplyDeleteI began noticing this trend last year. I don't think it's a conspiracy or anything---last year I had the feeling Tito was sacrificing offense for defense when Wakefield pitched, a defensible, if misguided, strategy.
That said, I suppose the whole thing could be a product of my protective instincts toward the Knuckler, whose stock fluctuates wildly with management and fans even though he is remarkably consistent and dependable from season to season.
