G107: Angels 7, Red Sox 5

Angels - 010 006 000 - 7 9 0
Red Sox - 000 201 011 - 5 11 0
Not much to say about this one, except that the game did not feel as close as the final score.

A two-RBI single from Manny Ramirez gave the Sox their only lead of the game in the fourth. Then Dice-K, who had retired eight batters in a row, walked Figgins to start the top of the sixth. Ten pitches later, the Angels had a 6-2 lead. Kotchman hit a two-run homer, Izturis doubled, Guerrero singled and Hunter blasted a three-run dong.

In the bottom of the sixth, Lowrie's ground-rule double to right knocked in Ortiz (LAA 7-3) and chased Weaver. Arredondo walked Varitek on four pitches, loading the bases with two outs for Ellsbury. Lyndon was the potential tying run, but he struck out.

With one out in the seventh, Youkils and Ortiz singled, but Manny grounded into an inning-ending double play. Ellsbury singled in Drew in the eighth and Manny hit a home run into the Monster Seats with two out in the ninth.

After a shaking beginning in relief of Matsuzaka, Masterson set down the last five batters he faced with ease. Hansen threw nine pitches (eight strikes) in the eighth, retiring the Angels in order.

Toronto beat Tampa 3-1 and Baltimore clubbed New York 13-4, so the top three spots in the East standings remain the same. The fourth-place Blue Jays are now only 7.5 GB.

  1. I wouldn't mind flip flopping Drew and Lowell for lefty righty sakes, but I love starting the game with a hardy FUCK YEAH!

This Angels team scares me. They are good.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Know what kicks about that, he moved Varitek to 8th and is batting Jedi 7th. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

    Should we call this the J line (J. Drew - J. Lowery - J. Veritek - J. Ellsbury).

    ReplyDelete
  3. That's a World Championship lineup right there.

  4. Although if I had my way I think I'd flip-flop Drew and Lowell. R R L R L R S S L

  6. It does kick ass. Last night's intentional walking of Drew to get to Tek (even though the C got a hit)should signal Francona that Varitek's days as a middle of the line-up guy are gone. Lowrie won't get walked to get to Tek, at least this season, and if they walk Drew to get to Lowrie, I'll take my chances,

But what do you do when Cora's starting at short, you ask?

    Don't start Cora at short!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Cora, Cash - if they start once a week, do whatever. 8th, 9th ...

    ReplyDelete
  8. 1st three batters life time vs Weaver - 14/36 (41 PA) with a 1.217 OPS.

That would be some table setting!!!

  12. Is'nt baseball amazing if we get anything from Ellsbury at 9 we see it as a bonus but if Lugo bats .265from that spot he is a bum.....

And could someone please find J.D. a match.....Man he is streaky..

    (Hint; "Nixon's the one!")

Hell, I don't want to get rid of Manny---I just want to bitch about him now and then.

  23. Supposedly, in England, if you have the dish or something, you have options to watch football matches from different camera angles and listen to different audio feeds.

  25. We can only hope that technology comes here soon.

    ReplyDelete
  27. When we first got digital cable, and had it on a smart-card instead of a cable box, whenever we'd put on a channel with more than one audio feed (i.e., SAP), an option window would come up to pick one. For about two weeks, the feed labeled "Spanish" was game audio with no commentary. It was amazing. Eventually they picked up on their mistake and fixed it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A 1-2-3 1st inning from Dice-K is a good sign.

    ReplyDelete
  39. you were talking about scoscia, right? or weaver?

  42. If youk wasn't signaling 'safe' he might have been safe

OK, probably not. It still bugs me when guys do that

    ReplyDelete
  43. Weaver, weaver, weaver YOU SUCK

    ReplyDelete
  44. Youk doesn't understand that whining isn't giving it his all. It's something else.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I can't thread b/c Allan is insisting on mute. I can only type during commercials.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I don't know if that's the same trade poll, but I saw one, on X-Bases I think, and the choices were "No, he's not worth it" (the no choice was first), and "yes, his bat's too valuable." There was no choice that said you like Manny. It seemed to come from the assumption of, "Okay, we all hate his wild hair and baggy clothes, but would you trade him or grit your teeth and keep him?"

The media is making me hate them more every minute. There seems to me that there's no problem, yet they're just pushing it and pushing it until there is one.

    ReplyDelete
  47. NESN just died for me, so (I can't believe I'm saying this) thank god ESPN has it on

    ReplyDelete
  48. Bitch about them sometimes? Nothing crazy about that.

Nope. But "can't live with them" isn't too good when it comes to your spouse and child.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Roberts was thrown out at home trying to score on a Markakis 2B.

TB is threatening (first-and-third, 1 out) in the 2nd.

    Grr.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Jere, ESPN is showing the game from the "classic" camera angle, in case you have a choice.

    ReplyDelete
  51. The longer the Rays stay up, the less chance the Yanks make the playoffs. We're gonna beat the Rays anyway, so I'm hoping they stick around. (But, if they don't, I'll be happy too because I hate them...)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Gotta call that the "Jere classic" angle, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Joe--I know--any visitor's feed or national feed will have the classic view, since the new cam is just for NESN. The outsiders still bring in their crew, stand in the CF camera well, etc.

However! You'll notice it's not as shaky on NESN tonight. That's because they've moved the new robot cam so that it's nailed to the back wall instead of perched atop it.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Maybe it's an HD thing, but the players actually seem closer to me w/ the new angle

    ReplyDelete
  55. Here's the pic I took of the cams Saturday. New robot cam at far right is now below top-of-wall level.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Look at Manny's defensive lollygagging

    ReplyDelete
  57. Look at that lack of effort on that catch - Manny totally should've sprinted the 5 feet to grab it instead of walking...TRADE HIM NOW! I DON'T CARE IF WE GET GAGNE IN RETURN! ANYTHINGS BETTER THAN THAT!

    ReplyDelete
  58. joe, the players should appear smaller from the new angle. I've got a whole post describing why at my blog if you...eh, forget it.

    ReplyDelete
  59. TB leaves the bases loaded, fails to score.

And I guess it was Millar's 3R HR that put them up over Mussina.

I still hear Yankee fans in The Bar express their hatred for Millar.

  63. joe, the players should appear smaller from the new angle. I've got a whole post describing why at my blog if you...eh, forget it.

I read the post, which is why I felt compelled to say that they seemed closer to me. (Awesome drawing btw)

Nice grab JD. 2 outs. I'll take that.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Bahhhhhh, nice grab to save a couple more anyhow.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Tim, we're planning JoS-1 - Joy Of Sox Night at Fenway next year. You can drive down with us! (Woti too if he wants.)

    ReplyDelete
  66. Ramon Hernandez makes it back-to-back HRs vs. Mussina.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I will most definitely take that.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Bwahaha. Not bad dicey bastard.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Ooooh L, that would be excellent. LMK more details, clearly in like 6 months.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Posada out for year. If we didn't know.

Hey, I am getting ESPN and NESN on regular cable TV. So I just may switch to the classic.

    ReplyDelete
  71. and now mummy will tie it up...

    tim, how was the show?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Details as we get em. :)

So far it's just talk, but we'll make it happen.

    ReplyDelete
  73. This full time cryptozoology gig is wearing me down. I romped around in the woods all day, and now I'm exhausted.

No yeti sign, by the by.

    ReplyDelete
  74. The Foot still hiding from you, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  75. The man is just trying to get Manny down!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I'm watching from NESN land.

Holy shit, what is this camera angle. Make them stop, jere.

    ReplyDelete
  77. tim, how was the show?

Was a good one, I'm pretty dead right now though...was in the front/pit area for most of the show so I'm a little tender.

    Wow, terrible call in Toronto.

    ReplyDelete
  78. home plate ump has got martyfosteritis.

espn gamebreak shows mirror dong, anchor says millahhh in a boston accent -- hey espn, he's not from boston and he doesn't play in boston. you can stop that now.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I've got NESN (via the Slingbox) - it's Red Sox baseball, so I couldn't care less about camera angles right now. I'm just grateful to be able to watch it and not follow on GDGD =)

    ReplyDelete
  80. That's how I feel re camera angles. I'm watching baseball, it's the Red Sox, end of story.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Anderson pulled a Manny...

fuck that. mrs. garrett was back on the track almost. manny woulda caught that with ease.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Damnit, Burnett, show the world you are a stud.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Iwamura crosses the plate on a groundout. 1-0 TB. He was out at 3rd by at least 2 feet when Rolen tagged him, yet the ump somehow called it safe.

    ReplyDelete
  84. A, I think Patrick was kidding. You're pulling a Laura.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I'm watching baseball, it's the Red Sox, end of story.

    Yup.*

    * - with the exception of that horrific camera angle from the preseason game in the coliseum. That was brutally near-unbearable.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I'd love an angle from behind the plate, looking out at the pitcher

    ReplyDelete
  87. This is terrible. Weaver keeps obscuring the plate. WTF would they do this?

I'm calling my congressman once I move here.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Burnett with 7 Ks through 3?! Did I hear that right?

    ReplyDelete
  89. I can take a hint. But I'll still talk about the camera out of spite. You lose! (Until I'm banned.)

    ReplyDelete
  90. Yup. AJ mowin down the Rays.

    ReplyDelete
  91. 7Ks isn't so fun when he has given up a run...to TFR no less.

    ReplyDelete
  92. It wasn't a hint from me. Just my opinion! I swear.

    ReplyDelete
  93. If Dice-K doesn't make it though 6 I'm afraid my left testy might shatter.

This guy gives me pent up angst.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I don't care...If I had the luxury of NESN on cable, I would most definitely be bitching about it, alongside you. But I get shitty Blue Jays, so any Red Sox baseball is good. It's like that hierarchy of needs theory. Once the basic need is fulfilled (Sox baseball), you move up to the next level (camera angle)

    ReplyDelete
  95. is joe helping redsock break out of jail? oh, right. modern times and all.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Guess we drew shitty Matsusaka tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  97. It's not so much the angle as it is the fact that they CHANGED from something that was fine for no reason.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Throw strikes, you fucking fucker.

    ReplyDelete
  99. And these fuckers at NESN, for not giving me any games for 30 years despite living in New England, owe me!!!

    ReplyDelete
  100. That seemed like a lot of luck for Dice.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Yeah, makes sense. I'm not a fan of mindless changes which make things worse than they were before either.

    ReplyDelete
  102. the old angle was very good.
    the new angle is better.
    that is all.

    ReplyDelete
  103. And these fuckers at NESN, for not giving me any games for 30 years despite living in New England, owe me!!!

    DRINK!

    ReplyDelete
  104. But you can't see the plate. Don't you care about seeing the plate? This is inexcusable.

Doesn't NESN watch its own programming?

    ReplyDelete
  105. 52 through three could be worse.

    ReplyDelete
  106. It's amazing how many ads there are - constantly - for unhealthy food.

I was going to write "disgusting, unhealthy" food, but even without my own opinion on the food, the unhealthy part is a fact.

    It's just constant, every inning.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I wish I could get voice-in-picture so I could listen to Remy and friends while watching the ESPN feed.

    ReplyDelete
  108. well i don't wanna be pretentious and assume people know stuff about me. If I just said they owe me for not being able to see games for 30 years, and then somebody asks why, I'd just have to explain it, so I try to keep it to one post. I don't enjoy typing the same thing every time, but I do it so people know what I'm talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I'm watching ESPN. That Tek near dong looked so great. I could tell where it was going. On NESN it would've looked like a pop up that was going anywhere from second base to a hundred feet foul off first.

    ReplyDelete
  110. It's amazing how many ads there are - constantly - for unhealthy food.

And we have an incredibly terrible health care system. The whole thing is very perverse.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Jere, I feel that way sometimes about my shady baseball past. I think in game threads it's safe to assume everyone knows certain things - about all of us.

But that could be an incorrect assumption.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Why is it I'm getting it on both channels? How come sometimes it's a blackout but other times I get it on both? I thought I had it figured out, that if it's a regional ESPN game I get it on both, but that didn't work last time.

    ReplyDelete
  113. It's amazing how many ads there are - constantly - for unhealthy food.

And we have an incredibly terrible health care system. The whole thing is very perverse.

But the health care is for profit, so there's money to be made in unhealthy eating.

    ReplyDelete
  114. When is truck day? We need to bring the lumber back to Fenway.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I think disgusting is fair too, Laura.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I think so, too, Sarah. The whole industry is just gross.

    ReplyDelete
  117. But Wendy's is "way better than fast food," and McDonald's is saying "let's hear it for nonconformity," so everything is ok

    ReplyDelete
  118. Interestingly, I have both ESPN and FSN on the EI feed. No blackout. I'm going with ESPN.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Jere spent the first thirty years of his life living in the Mount Weather nuclear bunker, which, despite being a little more than 300 miles from Connecticut, is not in the NESN broadcast region.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I still need to blog about how much the McDonalds "Southern Style" annoys me. It's on my to-write list, but I've been lazy.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I'm watching ESPN. That Tek near dong looked so great. I could tell where it was going. On NESN it would've looked like a pop up that was going anywhere from second base to a hundred feet foul off first.

And you're serious, right? Not exaggerating?

I feel like you're watching some kind of fun-house mirror version, and we're just watching regular TV. I never see anything even remotely resembling that.

    ReplyDelete
  122. i thought it was the CF camera on pitches that bothers you.

a dong/foul down the line is from a different camera -- one that is still the same as far as i know.

    ReplyDelete
  123. KFC is hawking "Asian-inspired" meals!

    *poof*

    That's my head exploding.

(I have a long to-write list, too. But it's not laziness, it's time.)

    ReplyDelete
  124. "And you're serious, right? Not exaggerating?"

I'm talking about right off the bat (ooh, the literal version of that phrase!). I can't judge distance on NuCam and often left-right on fly balls.

    ReplyDelete
  125. CHC vs. MIL just starting. Pretty interesting as far as NL goes, which is to say, not much.

    ReplyDelete
  126. fast-food. bad for:
    health
    nutrition
    environment
    labour
    animals
    local landscape
    taste buds

    anything else?

    ReplyDelete
  127. It's balls right when they're hit before they switch to the other camera which, yes, is the same as always.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I am here, at last, with my gigantic and delightful burger with cheddar cheese, baby spinach, A1 sauce, green pepper, and a little bit of salsa on top.

Crazy, I know. But it's tasty.

    ReplyDelete
  129. (ooh, the literal version of that phrase!)

    Literally!

    ReplyDelete
  130. well, i don't get it. pitches look better and i see/feel literally no difference when the ball is hit.

    ReplyDelete
  131. KFC is hawking "Asian-inspired" meals!

I saw that advertised at the local KFC earlier. WTF!

    ReplyDelete
  132. (I have a long to-write list, too. But it's not laziness, it's time.)

It was time. Until today, which I largely spent playing video games and reading. Then it became laziness.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I love that Ish unknowingly joins our conversation with a burger. So funny.

    ReplyDelete
  134. but you probably needed a video game & reading day. it's good for your mental health.

patrick: yes, two more things fast food and its culture chips away at

    ReplyDelete
  135. Speaking of unhealthy food (but awesome) - off to Morty's for me now!

(The local wing restaurant I was talking about and waiting for my delivery of during last Monday's game)

    Back in a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Well I'll try the example I always use: A ball hit right at you (straight toward the camera) is gonna be up the middle. On the old, it's closer to the shortstop's position. I mean, the two cameras are 20-30 feet off side-to-side, and 20 feet apart up-down, so the batted ball has to appear different from each angle.

    ReplyDelete
  137. some unhealthy food is still worth eating!

    ReplyDelete
  138. Yes, but Ish, unlike the commercials, made me want a burger.

And some more of the amazing corn I had this weekend. I need to go back to the market. Union Square should be closer to me.

    ReplyDelete
  139. I don't care what my mom thinks. Ice cream is good for you.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Let's get rid of that guy. Honestly, no dong?

    ReplyDelete
  141. Manny's been have a TON of problems against Weaver. Such as striking out SIX times.

    ...NOT THAT TIME!!!

    ReplyDelete
  142. only a single, manny? too lazy to hit a double?

    ReplyDelete
  143. I am all for eating unhealthy food sometimes, I just think it should be worth it, and fast food so rarely is.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Union Square should be closer to ME!

Union Square Cafe is our fave restaurant.

    Great greenmarket too.

    ReplyDelete
  145. We should totally trade that guy.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Ice cream is not bad for you, the natural kind. Unless you're lactose intolerant or sumpin.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Union Square should be closer to ME!

Ha ha - I thought you might say something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Sarah, same here, I do the same equation. Totally delicious unhealthy food is one of life's great (occasional) pleasures. But none of that shows up in those friggin commercials.

    ReplyDelete
  149. When I'm in NY, I'm 2.5 blocks from the Union Square Greenmarket. Stokes still doesn't have any heirloom tomatoes this year.

    ReplyDelete
