G136: White Sox 4, Red Sox 2

White Sox - 200 001 001 - 4 9 0
Red Sox - 000 100 001 - 2 8 0
A lack of timely hitting spelled doom for Boston today. They left the bases loaded in the first, and left men on second and third in both the second and fourth innings.

Wakefield allowed a two-run dong to Thome in the first and Thome and Konkero hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth. The Red Sox rallied in the ninth, but Pedroia flew out to left with the tying runs at (once again) second and third.

Tampa Bay improved its AL East lead to 5.5 games over the Red Sox by beating Baltimore 10-4. Toronto beat New York 6-2, dropping the Yankees 12.5 GB Tampa and only two games out of fourth place. Minnesota is now 2.5 GB Boston in the WC after beating Oakland 12-4.

***

Gavin Floyd (3.70, 122 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (3.73, 121 ERA+)

Dustin Pedroia became the first Red Sox player since Wade Boggs (June 8 and 10, 1989) to collect four hits in back-to-back games.

FY batted fourth last night. Terry Francona: "I'll never hear the end of this from Pedroia or Ortiz. Pedroia says it's long overdue and Ortiz says he's retiring." ... Asked after the game if he had created a monster by batting Pedroia cleanup, Francona said: "He already is a monster."

He's 12-for-17 (.706) in his last four games. Since August 12 (16 games), Pedroia is hitting .423/.468/.761. In 25 games since August 1, he's hitting .378/.426/.649.

FY:
I told David he better quit bitching about getting pitches to hit, because he got plenty tonight.
In his second start since being demoted to AA, Clay Buchholz dominated New Hampshire: 8-2-0-1-10.

OOT: Blue Jays/Yankees at 1, Orioles/Rays at 1:30, Twins/Athletics at 4.

Tampa Bay 83 51 .619 ---

  1. I believe Buchholz went 8 innings, not 7.

  2. Hi guy
I hope all is well. My dad has had recurring trouble with the stones for 10 - 15 years now. Not constant, mind you, just every few years or so. Of course he's 84 so we're just happy that seems to be the extent of his health problems :)
I do know it's extremely uncomfortable and I wish you a speedy recovery.
Lots of schadenfreude helps spur the process along I'm sure !!
Still can't believe the FKR pulled that win out yesterday. I was primed to gain a game. At least we did pick up 1 on the Twinkies, and of course the Bland Sox as well.

  3. BBTN's Eduardo Perez said something funny. He thinks LAAAAAA wins the west... Okay. He thinks Chicago wins the Central... Okay. He thinks Tampa wins the east... Okay.

Then he thinks the Twins win the wildcard. Here's why: "The Minnesota Twins are going to outlast the Boston Red Sox, because they have one guy to close games, and his name is Joe Nathan."

Now, come on. I know Joe Nathan is a very good pitcher. But that's your reasoning, where's Papelbon on your closer's totem poll? We've got one guy to close out games as well.

The Red Sox are not going to lose the wild card because of Papelbon, and the Twins are not going to win the wild card because of Joe Nathan.

  6. OK, that Amy is not me! I wouldn't remember how many innings HH went!! So someone is posing as me without without a public profile, or just another incidence of too many people named Amy, a fact of my life forever.

Anyway, welcome back, Allan! How are you feeling??

  7. Our record last year on this same date:
    80-55
    Going into today
    79-56

But for some reason people think we are having a down year...I don't get it...

  8. Kotsay's comments about Pedroia were great..

He mentioned how since he got there he has a different outlook on the game by just watching how he plays the game....

    ReplyDelete
  9. Two "amy"s may be confusing.

Feeling much better. No real pain today at all, but I guess that means the stone is in a "nice" place for now.

Hoping to actually watch today rather than float in and out of sleep like last night.

Thanks to everybody for their kind words here and at wmtc.

  12. Well, you will know it is the original Amy by my annoying questions. Also, maybe the "other" Amy can choose some way of distinguishing herself short of a different name.

In 8th grade, there were three girls named Amy in my French class, and I was the new kid in town. I had to take on a nickname that I hated. I am not doing that here! I am no longer the new kid in town.

  15. "A lot of people talk about Manny leaving," Chicago manager Ozzie Guillen said before the game. "I wish Pedroia was leaving."

    --------

    After and re the BBI:
"I never thought I would walk a jockey. I must be the worst manager ever in the history of baseball right now, walking a guy that just came from being on the top of Big Brown to beat the White Sox. Right now, he's on a roll. This guy right now is on fire."

  21. I will be going out soon, so if anyone posts as Amy in the next few hours, it is not me. Unless she says something brilliant. :)

Allan, glad you are feeling more comfortable. Hope this experience is over soon.

    ReplyDelete
  22. ALLAN GOOD TO SEE YR DOING BETTER, MY MAN!

    ReplyDelete
  23. MFY should just tank the rest of the season and hope for some high draft picks.

    ReplyDelete
  24. "MFY should just tank the rest of the season "

Oh, they'll be under strict orders to tank when they play Tampa.

I guess I missed some crazy kidney stuff. Glad you're okay, Allan.

I'm in the Seven Stars Bakery, but only for a few more minutes, then I go back to the un-internetted house.

  30. tbs - i guess it is a national sunday game?

    ReplyDelete
  31. will the mfy wanna tank against the fkr and give the east to the sox?

    ReplyDelete
  32. As if the MFY have much choice in the outcome of a FKR-MFY game.

    ReplyDelete
  33. "Connecticut Day? F THAT! "

Every other New England state gets a day at Fenway, CT deserves one! But if they really care about my home state, they will give everyone there NESN! (And by the way, if they had it, maybe there'd be more Sox fans in the state in the first place.)

  34. lyndon diving catch to start the game -- as usual

    ReplyDelete
  35. Was Buck Martinez right? Is Pedroia really leading the league in hitting? I didn't know that. I knew he was in the top 10.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Cool, I got to be here for one out of a game thread! See you all later....

    ReplyDelete
  37. 1. Pedroia: .327
    2. Bradley: .324
    3. Mauer: .323

    He is in average.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hmm... First game I've gotten to see in weeks. That's not quite what I was looking for.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I was excited to get to watch the game today, but I think I'm going to go back to bed. I seem to have the flu, and merely sitting up seems like too much work. (Dave wants us to clean the house. He's welcome to.)

    ReplyDelete
  45. BULLSHIT YOU RAGING BULL LOOK-A-LIKE COCKSUCKER!

    ReplyDelete
  51. tbs showed a replay from milwaukee's game. batter hits a line drive right bakc at sabathia, who catches it bare-handed and throws to first for a dp.

    ReplyDelete
  52. tbs in studio guy does a viagra tie-in and shows the fisk ws home run -- and says we all remember seeing that - it came in the 11th inning....

wtf is wrong with this people?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oooof. Yard work sucks. Hated to do it while the game was on, but got an engagement later and it HAD to be done.
Checked in every so often and not liking what I see.
    RUNS PLEASE!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Local ad break provides an interesting fact. Our county library does a project they call "The Big Read" every year. I'm sure they're not the only one, but....
Anyway, this year's book is Farenheit 451. They encourage everyone all over to read the one book and discuss. Good idea, and an interesting choice.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Do you think he's taking ?
    Ooooh... 3-0 call no doubt.

    SUCKS!

Should be 2 on, no outs

    ReplyDelete
  56. Wow!

FUCKING BALLS CALELD STRIKES ALL FUCKING DAY -- FUCKING COCKNUGGET

    ReplyDelete
  64. can jedi not be a pile of poo here?

    ReplyDelete
  65. If you hit the ball into the outfield, they can't call it strike three.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Could easily be tying run on base, no outs, if not for the bullshit call.

    ReplyDelete
  67. PAPI YOU ARE DO
    will they walk him?

    ReplyDelete
  68. The damn insurance run last inning, and the freaking high strike 3 are both looming large right now.

    ReplyDelete
  69. If they walk him, then Pedroia gets the walkoff.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Go ahead - walk him.
Then look in the on-deck circle and cringe!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Ok, maybe Crisp'd have a chance at scoring from first.

    ReplyDelete
  72. No defensive indifference there.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Baltimore has the bases loaded with one out in the eighth. Down nine runs, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Pedroia looked like he was a little too anxious to hit. Chased

    ReplyDelete
  75. i think the fans need to calm down with that MVP shit. they are gonna put unnecessary pressure on the kid. jesus.

  76. finally time to kiss the Division goodbye?

    ReplyDelete
  78. fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck the fucking rays.

    ReplyDelete
  79. finally time to kiss the Division goodbye?

Has L got to you too?

We need help, there is no question about that.

I say it's still possible, but if I saw one of those "if FKR slip and go only 14-14, we need to go x-x" things, I might see it differently.

    ReplyDelete
  80. the only reason im saying that is cause we went what 18-6 in aug and STILL lost 2.5 games, or something like that. its CRAZY!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Someone needs to start an investigation of the umpires at the CWS-Red Sox game 8/31. Their calls were so obviously bad and wrong that they must have been intentional. Are they on payola?

    ReplyDelete
