Blue Jays - 100 133 000 - 8 13 1Byrd's mid-innings implosion turned this one ugly in a hurry.
Red Sox - 000 000 100 - 1 5 0
Travis Snider -- the youngest player in the AL -- drove in five of the Jays' six runs in the fifth and sixth innings, with a three-run dong to right and a two-run rope to right-center that was a ground rule double.
Devern Hansack pitched three perfect innings (on only 27 pitches) to close it out.
George Kottaras made his major league debut when he went behind the plate in the top of the seventh. The Ontario-born catcher reached on a K-WP in his first at-bat and came around to score Boston's only run (FC-E4, FC4-6, Pedroia sac fly to right). He flew to right in the ninth.
By the ninth inning, the lineup card looked like what you might see in a spring training game:
Three Sox played more than one position: Lowrie started the game at SS, went to 3B in the 7th, then back to SS in the 8th. Cora took over at SS in the 7th and moved to 2B in the 8th. Van Every, after pinch-running, was in LF for the 7th, then in RF for the 8th and 9th.Carter, LF

Bailey, DH
Cora, 2B
Casey, 1B

A.J. Burnett (4.31, 99 ERA+) / Paul Byrd (4.39, 101 ERA+)
In his five starts for the Red Sox, Byrd is 3.82, 118 ERA+.
MLB:
Burnett will be pitching on short rest ... He was dominant Tuesday against the White Sox in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader, allowing just one hit and one unearned run over seven innings. He struck out seven ... In two starts against Boston this season Burnett is 1-0 with a 3.07 ERA. He walked eight batters in those two starts combined, a total that will likely have to come down this time around. ...J.D. Drew will not play in the Toronto series. He received another injection to relax his lower back and his grandmother passed away. The Red Sox called up Jonathan Van Every for the busy weekend.
[Byrd is] a perfect 6-0 in his past six road starts going back to July 21. Since that July 21 start, Byrd is 8-1 with a 2.61 ERA. His last time out, in unforgiving Rangers Ballpark, Byrd mixed his pitches well and kept them down in the zone to shut out the Rangers over 6.2 innings.

I'm seeing 7:30 for the second DET/CHI game, and 8:40 for the second MIN/BAL game.
Go Red Sox and Yankees!
Amazing how 15 of the 20 games played today have playoff implications. That's almost twice as many games with playoff implications, as there are teams who will go to the playoffs!
First time there will be 6 doubleheaders in one day since August 17, 1980.
There will also be four baseball games played in the city of New York. First time that's happened since April 13, 1997, and just the third time the Yankees and Mets have had doubleheaders in one day in New York.
DET/CHI, ATL/NYM, and MIN/BAL are all single-admission DHs. Mostly because they're being shown on FOX, so game 2 will follow shortly after game 1.
Is this the doubleheaderest day in recent history? That schedule looks mighty full...
BR still unupdated.
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, RF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Mike Lowell, 3B
5. Sean Casey, 1B

AmBen:
The news here this is morning is that it's official that Hideki Okajima's option has vested for the 2009 season. Okajima was signed to a $2.5 million two-year contract with a team option for 2009. But if he pitched in at least 115 games in 2007 and 2008, his $1.75 million option vested for next season.
Okajima is now at 123 games, putting his option in the books.

Would this have become "official" on August 20, in Jeemer's 115th game?
Only 1 of Jeemer's last 7 inherited runners have scored.
For the year, 13 of 22 have scored.
I can't understand why Ellsbury keeps leading off.
Cuz he's fast. That's what you need in a leadoff guy.
Sigh.
Poop.
Coco's speedy too and has been hot for a month. Bat him first.
Shit, it was 12:30, not 13:00. And not the best way to start things off...
So, about that whole Ellsbury leading off thing...
FUPHIL.
Ofer, at least ya made it before 13.
Tito knows what he's doing!
Fuphil. That's fun to say.
I hear Ellsbury has nitrous naturally occurring in his legs.
According to GDGD, balls 2 and 3 to FY were obvious strikes.
as is ball 1 to ortiz.
ump must have a small zone?
Hi.
Just saying hi. Am listening but can't thread.
Bye.
friggin' curve
hi. I'm more out than in, but thought I'd say hi.
Went to a co-op meeting this morning, lots of housework today and then work tonight.
I want runs, lots and lots of runs. I want runs in my sox. not against my sox.
Hibye, L
Byrd's delivery is not exactly a thing of beauty. Clumsy, pudgy... I don't know how to describe it.
And Casey's playing. That hasn't happened in a long time.
Jesus, Dustin. Why don't you get a shovel?
Byrd - 7 in a row set down and 9 of 10.
PC: 14-11-7 = 32
Evan Longoria is back in the lineup for the Rays.
Frack. UNH football is encroaching upon my ability to listen to the Yankees-Rays game.
"WTSN will carry every Yankee game this season." Really now?
Hey everyone!
I haven't had enough time or bandwidth (slow 56k) to take part on the blog for awhile, but I do miss it when I check the scores.
Life has been grand out here in North East Oregon. I wear my Red Sox shirt proudly around town (whenever I go into the town of 1,500 which is rare).
It's almost October baseball time. So exciting.
time for a tiz bomb

Those tickets I was trying to give away for a ride to the airport ended up being that loss to the rays in 14.
Hey Patrick. Meet any chicks out there in northeast Oregon?
Those tickets I was trying to give away for a ride to the airport ended up being that loss to the rays in 14.
How'd you end up getting to the airport?
I ended up getting some tickets for Sept. 22 against Cleveland
Very good play!
Hey Patrick. Meet any chicks out there in northeast Oregon?
Oh yeah. It's been a good trip for me.
My sister's boyfriend drove me to the airport and I gave him my other pair, the tickets to that Orioles game where we won on the walk-off error.
My sister's boyfriend drove me to the airport and I gave him my other pair, the tickets to that Orioles game where we won on the walk-off error.
Funny. My sister's boyfriend gave me the tickets to the game I'll be going to.
Fantastic on the other front. Sounds like things are going well. Any interesting adventures?
How did we get Byrd and Kotsay? I've been out of the loop.
Rios had a thought of throwing to first to try to get Casey before he reached.
How did we get Byrd and Kotsay? I've been out of the loop.
A couple of waiver deals for very very minor league players.
No exciting stories. My highlights have been eating from our robust garden, driving draft horses, playing cards and drinking beer...
low key fun.
But fun nonetheless.
ugh. looks like its one of those days, eh?
Is this right? Barto is pitching tonight? Will this be his first appearance since facing the Phillies?
ugh. looks like its one of those days, eh?
A bit early for that, no?
Damn and blast!
great. and the rays take the lead 2-0.
i hate this shit
It's cool though, cuz the sox are gonna score 8 runs this game and the jays are only going to get one more in the 4 innings.
Ouch. that hurts.
no, its not too early for that, according to paul byrd.
Time for some runs. Lets plate three.
must buy volvo... must buy volvo...
Hi Patrick!
Patrick, how long do you stay out there?
good at bat Tek!
Hey L.
Good to see you like the car that tim wakefield uses. I mean the shampoo that Jacoby Ellsbury drives.
I bought a one way ticket, so I'm not sure. I don't plan on spending the winter.
Yeah, something like that.
See any bigfoots out there yet?
lets get a blast!
I haven't seen any Sasquatch around, though there was rumor of a pride of Yeti roving the hills outside of town.
Just elk and deer and Belgians, and volvos, I mean Voles and people.
There is a new commercial that says it's the car Castig and Lyndon both drive.
But they probably don't call him Lyndon?
thanks for nothing, byrd.
Goodness. This batter is only a handful of days older than me.
christ on a cracker ....
Come on, Chokers!
*my attention shifts to the yankees game*
fuck. my score prediction crystal ball is really a freaky funhouse mirror.
maybe I'm not actually as handsome as I thought.
The 'Sack is up.
is sack the longman at this point? or will tito use timlin.
Maybe Byrd can go to the pen tonight, not that it's a good option!
23 batters but only 59 pitches (47 strikes, 12 balls)
19 of the 23 batters Byrd faced saw 3 or fewer pitches, including 14 in a row!
jeez. the yanks are really infuriating to root for.

Cora SS

I'm going to choose this time to duck on out, enjoy the rest of my afternoon, and show up tonight like nothing happened.
KOTTARAS!
Our neighbour!
Not just Canadian, but from our area.
1st AB!
Just tuned in. Very happy to see that we did not win this game. Why try too hard to win the East?
3-0 FKR
Georgie was going for one of those multiple fielder outs.
Not that any of these younger journeyman players give a shit but the Yankees should sweep their final homestand. Jeter may be the only guy who truly cares.
Hey MLB.tv has the option for either team's home broadcast. how long will that last I wonder.
3.0
FUCKING YAKNEES SUCK.
MOOSE YOU'LL NEVER WIN 20 YOU ASSHOLEFACE
eh, whattayagonnado?

Double Header fantasy baseball. Kevin fucking Cash at third.
Did Tito just come out of the clubhouse up the dugout stairs and say to the bench coach, what the holy fuck is Cash doing?
wow -- this has become a spring training game.
wow -- this has become a spring training game.
are you talking about the sox or the takns game. both are in the toilet at this point!

i meant all the sox subs. my scorecard looks like a feb 27 game!
i think the game 2 post will go up asap. gotta put this debacle behind us toot sweet.
Good idea. This game and thread is dead.
i'm pretty sure i got a very cool factoid about g-kot. will have to do some research btw games.

SHOULDA BEEN USED INSTEAD OF TIMLIN ON WED! HE WAS AT FENWAY THAT NIGHT, NO?
My fucking washing machine should have been used before timlin.
whats yr washing machine's ERA?
Put this guy on the All-Penis Team
What a freaking joke.
This is no damn time to play one as if it just doesn't matter.
And the damn Skankees are of course lying down for the Satanic Rays just like we did here.
I spend all day so far at the LL complex working on fields, now I've gotta get out here and mow our yard since it's been raining for 2 solid weeks, and I can't even get a little excitement out of a good game report in between.
Freaking Sox,
mumble, mumble, growl, sputter, cough, get off my yard you damn kids, hmmph
Put this guy on the All-Penis Team
I don't have the google fu to find the comment, but he's already on the team. And Candy Cummings is the closer.
