ALDS 4: Red Sox 3, Angels 2

Angels - 000 000 020 - 2 6 1
Red Sox - 000 020 001 - 3 9 0
YES!!!!!!!!

Red Sox win the ALDS and will open the ALCS in Tampa Bay on Friday night.

Jed Lowrie's hard single to right field scored Jason Bay, who had hit a one-out ground-rule double, with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Bay's head-first slide got him across the plate before Reggie Willits's throw arrived at the dish. And it was Willits's ill-advised dive on Bay's fly ball that allowed it to hop into the seats for two bases rather than being fielded on a hop for a single.

The ALDS-winning run revitalized a Fenway crowd that had been stunned by the Angels's two-run rally against Hideki Okajima and Justin Masterson in the top of the eighth. Jeemer retired the first two Angels on ground balls to second, but he walked Mark Teixeira on four pitches. Masterson came in and got ahead of Vlad Guerrero 0-2, but ended up walking him. Then he crossed up Jason Varitek by throwing a fastball when Tek was expecting a slider. The passed ball moved the runners to second and third -- and Torii Hunter's single to right field scored them both.

The Angels threatened to take the lead in the ninth. Kendry Morales doubled. Howie Kendrick bunted pinch-runner Willits to third. Manny Delcarmen relieved Masterson. Erick Aybar tried to squeeze on 2-0 but missed the pitch. Varitek then chased Willits back up the line towards third, lunging and tagging him on the back when Willits was five feet from the bag. Tek then fell down and the ball popped out of his glove, but the umpire rightly ruled it an out. The Angels strongly disagreed. Two pitches later, Aybar grounded to first for the third out.

Boston had taken a 2-0 lead in the fifth on singles from Mark Kotsay and Varitek, an RBI grounder from Jacoby Ellsbury and an RBI double off the Wall from Dustin Pedroia (who finished the series 1-for-17).

Lester (7-4-0-2-4, 109) was everything we could have asked for. Only four outs were recorded outside of the infield in seven innings and Lester allowed only one LAA runner past second base. In two ALDS starts, he gave up one unearned run in 14 innings. MVP awards are not given out for the DS, but Lester deserved one in this series.

In addition to doubling and scoring the winning run, Bay also walked and singled. Only Youkilis and Ellsbury did not collect hits, but Lyndon drove in the first Boston run and Yook was an absolute beast in the field yet again, playing third in place of Mike Lowell and making several excellent plays and throws. Kotsay also made two sterling plays on pop flies in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Rays beat the White Sox 6-2 earlier in the evening to win their series 3 games to 1.

Lowell Replaced on Roster; Out For ALDS & ALCS
Mike Lowell has been removed from the Red Sox's roster due to a right hip strain. Gil Velazquez replaces Lowell and is available for tonight's game. This move means Lowell would be ineligible for the ALCS.

ish had a great line this morning:
Reality sneaks up on you fast in a short series, doesn't it?
It sure does. The Red Sox -- riding high, up 2-0, with fans thinking ahead to Friday's ALCS -- are now faced with the prospect of flying back across the country to Anaheim for a do-or-die Game 5 with the often exasperating (despite the low ERA) Daisuke Matsuzaka on the hill if they cannot find their bats and win tonight.

Jacoby Ellsbury (6-for-14, 3 doubles, 3 SB, 5 RBI) and Jason Bay (5-for-14, 2 dongs, though he was 0-for-5 last night) are going their part, but several players, including Dustin Pedroia (0-for-13, "I've got to get on [expletive] base"), Mike Lowell (0-for-8) and Jason Varitek (2-for-11) are not.

On the mound, it's a rematch of Game 1, which Boston won 4-1:
          IP H R ER BB K PIT
Lackey 6.2 4 2 2 3 5 92
Lester 7.0 6 1 0 1 7 117
The Globe reports that Lowell
could barely walk as he came into the clubhouse after the game. He was late, as many of his teammates had already done sessions with the media and moved on. He had difficulty putting on his pants.
Hopefully, by midnight tonight, pants will be optional.

But first: Rays (2)/White Sox (1) at 5 PM

I've gotta work today at getting PUMPED for the game tonight. I was not very pumped last night. In fact, I was falling asleep during the second half.

But right now, the Angels are already in a do-or-die situation. We want to win, they have to win or they're history.

Contrary to that headline, the Sox's playoff dominance continues until they lose a series. And that hasn't happened yet.

Pokerwolf said...

I'm reading the headline in the picture again and I'm trying to figure out how it makes sense.

The Angels didn't "end the playoff dominance" of the Sox. They staved off elimination. The Sox still only have one loss to the Angels during the playoffs. Is that bad English or is it just me.

Also, the apostrophe after "Sox" is just awful editing. They're either missing a "S" there or it's a mistake.

And yes, I'm quibbling over grammar and the English language so I don't have to think about the Sox losing tonight. Although, L-Girl has a point and I need to keep that in mind.

laura k said...

Exactly.

Is that bad English or is it just me.

Neither. It's media stupidity.

However, Sox' and Sox's are both correct.

Oh, okay. Thanks for clearing that up.

We HAVE to win tonight. Not only because going back to LA will be awful. But I also realized this morning that I will not be able to watch Wednesday's game at all because it is Yom Kippur. Now the Sox don't want to piss off all their Jewish fans, do they? I assume that Youk will play regardless, not being Sandy Koufax or anything.

I am glad the game starts later since I am teaching until 9 tonight, but I bet I will regret saying that when I am falling asleep at 11 and the game is still going on. Staying up til 1 am last night was not so good!

Pokerwolf said...

I think more fans want to have the Sox win tonight because we'd have to watch Dice-K pitch in LA in a must-win game if we lose.

Not that I'm saying that he'd automatically lose or do badly, but I'm guessing the Boston EMTs would appreciate not have to run all of those cardiac arrest calls.

laura k said...

Winning tonight is definitely better. But if it goes to 5, there's no reason we can't win in Anaheim, and there's no reason we can't win on Oct 8, with respect to whoever can't watch on that day.

A lot of people picked Sox in 5. Let's not get so wound up that we forget the point. It's not "win in 3" or "win in 4" or "win at home". It's win the ALDS, then move on to the RSNV.

laura k said...

In other words, DON'T PANIC.

Did Red or Denton from SG write that line for you?

I had Sox in 4 - it's Sox in 4. 'nuf ced!

I have to miss the first hour at least of tonight's game. Shucks!

Over at Surviving Grady they say that Mike Lowell is a Kirk Gibson moment waiting to happen. Wouldn't that be sweet!

BTW, I've fixed the no profile thing from last night. Never saw a reason to do it before.

Me too. Fuckin' A right.

(And for all the people who picked the Red Sox in 5, you do know they have to lose tonight for you to be right?)

Over at Surviving Grady they say that Mike Lowell is a Kirk Gibson moment waiting to happen. Wouldn't that be sweet!

That would mean he spends almost the entire game on the bench before being sent up for a highly improbable shot at success. I could live with that. Dr. D was a big liability last night and he seems to be getting worse.

ish's pump levels notwithstanding, the crowd was very up last night. Game 7 of last year's ALCS was lke nothing I'd ever seen in person at Fenway. Last night wasn't like that, but it was in the same league. At times it was so loud the inside of my head was hurting. In a great way. We were so ready to explode in the 9th, 10th, 11th, etc. Too bad.

(did I use "notwithstanding" correctly?)

I know I kept using the name Mrs. Garrett, but I realized last night I don't even know why that nickname came about - and it has a glaring absence in the Glossary.

So that explains the unsightly view of pasty white thighs and then some after Red Sox playoff wins around here.

I'm with you - FUK DAH RAYZ! Once we take care of these Hi-Los, we're taking to Tampa!

Zenslinger said...

I couldn't believe Kilgore's crap in Extra Bases. With the (rather inadequate) caveat that he's "maybe overstating it", he says:

[T]his is the kind of nightmare Red Sox followers feared and lived through time after time, for the 86 years prior to 2004. The Red Sox had complete control of the series. They faced 80 pitches last night/early this morning that could have instantly ended the game and the series. Now they are nine innings from going back to Anaheim for Game 5.

We lost a game. We hung on during a night in which the Angels had 16 hits to our 7. Christ, we could lose this series and it would not even be within shouting distance of pre-2004 in terms of people's emotions.

Let's Lester it up. Few hits from Drew / FY / Large Father et al. and it's on the Rays. Fuck.

FenFan said...

Off to Fenway to witness the clincher!

Zenslinger said...

"On to the Rays", that is.

MacBook represent! what what!

As for the JD, bought myself a little bottle after game 1, had it for game 2 - a few shots actually, then mixed a couple drinks during last night's game.

Should be enough to get me through tonight's game...hopefully. Hopefully it won't be one of those games! A nice no-doubter by the 2nd would be ideal.

Rob said...

So Tim, you think a MacBook is enough - good enough compared to a MacBook pro?

Amy said...

Thanks, Tim. It was one of those lightbulb moments. Just as I was typing the question, the answer seemed so obvious. But I have learned that sometimes the obvious is not the right answer!

I have class in 20 minutes. Please be sure to see that our guys score lots of runs in the bottom of the first. I hope to get back from teaching in time for the second inning.

tim said...

So Tim, you think a MacBook is enough - good enough compared to a MacBook pro?

I know at least when I was looking, the only major difference to me was the upgraded video card in the Pro.

I think the highest MacBook (BlackBook) the one i ended up getting, had the same specs for processor/hard drive/optical drive as the lowest level MBP. The large increase in price wasn't enough for me to justify the better video card, and I think it had a couple more ports on the side.

Of course, the increased size - something I wasn't keen on as I travel with it a lot, and wanted something smaller. I did think the screen would be a bit bigger but I can deal. It serves its purpose and I'm happy with it.

I've heard the new MacBooks coming out will have the same aluminum case as the Pros have had, to create uniformity among the brand.

tim said...

Scotia gabbing again

Pepe Lepew said...

I sure hope there is a different umpire tonight calling balls and strikes. That other guy ought to be sent home for the playoffs!

Sarah Haendler said...

Ish, the video card is the major reason I went pro instead of plain ol macbook - with boot camp, this is the best gaming pc I've ever owned! I maxed out my ram as well, which really shows when editing big sound stuff. I'm totally in love with the thing.

Sarah Haendler said...

(I do have it out at the bar right now, but it's still slow this far before gametime. If I spill MY beer on it, I have only myself to blame.)

Rob said...

Thanks for the advice, Sarah and Tim. It'll be an interesting decision when it comes time to get one. Few months maybe. When do the next line of macbooks come out?

Dan Shulman and Dave Campbell on ESPN Radio... They may be a hair better, but who knows.

Ladies and Gentlemen. Time for tonight's MAIN EVENT!

Rob said...

Actually it doesn't come as any surprise that the Red Sox/Angels games have been the last games to play during the ALDS. If last night's game was a 4:00 start, it'd be a scheduling nightmare!

Jere said...

How long before celebrations have sponsors?

Zenslinger said...

I'm fairly certain I drank more in 2004 than 2007.

I was fuzzy for a moment on exactly what had happened at the, er, climactic moment of 2003.

laura k said...

Jere, good question.

andy said...

I love baseball and I love the Red Sox. I cannot appreciate anyone else's celebration. I can appreciate individual performances so long as they are not against the Sox. I am going to shit on my neighbors front porches after tonight's game. they have a huge fucking angels logo painted on their garage wall.

Jere said...

"Clearly one of us has some style...," TC says laughingly as Rice puts on a spiffy hat.

"And class," Rice quickly replies.

andy said...

Ron Darling here to save the day. Yeah! I love me some Darling.

Rob said...

I'm surprised there isn't an official champagne of Major League Baseball celebrations.

Probably because they're the wicked cheap kind.

Reminds me of a Stanley Cup playoffs commercial on Versus that is a first-person type format.

"I am $6 a bottle, but I am the finest champagne you will ever taste."

Rob said...

Ron Darling is added to the TBS broadcast this evening.

Rob said...

"Swing and a miss! It's over! The Red Sox have swept the Colorado Rockies! Can you believe it?"

Love that sound!

Jere said...

"...at the, er, climactic..."

uh oh.....

andy said...

Chip needs to wax his eyebrows.

allan said...

Darling is supposedly real good, but we will not find out tonight.

Caray has a rally monkey around his shoulders.

laura k said...

I actually love baseball even more than I love the Red Sox.

I appreciate pitcher's no-hitters even when they're not Sox (as long as they're not against us), great rookie seasons, guys hitting for the cycle, etc. etc. I can be happy for whole teams, especially underdogs.

But there's no conflict. It's not like I want to see the Rays celebrate again!

Jere said...

I remember in game 2 thinking, wasn't there a third guy in the booth in Game 1? And now Darling's here. Was he the one who was there in game 1?

Rob said...

I really like Ron Darling as well. Unfortunately he's stuck next to two Angels groupies.

allan said...

I am going to shit on my neighbors front porches after tonight's game.

I anxiously await the YouTube link.

Rob said...

Nope. Ron Darling was in Chicago doing the Cubs/Dodgers series.

Pregame shots (with the old man) down the hatch!

I fully agree with paragraph 2, yet I put myself in the "love Sox first, (hate Yanks 1b), love baseball 2nd) category.

The Beer of Champagnes, eh?

andy said...

I would be happy if Ozzie ran into the rays locker room with a bat and a hatred from within trying to get out.

Rob said...

Is it as cool to down shots with your dad as it sounds?

Jere said...

so who was the 3rd guy in game one? Or did I make that up?

tim said...

Sager back to his old self.

andy said...

Sager is wearing a table cloth

Rob said...

Craig Sager's back... He took a night off last night. At least I think. There was some normal clothed guy there last night.

andy said...

Game 2 had Sager in a shower curtain.

tim said...

It's usual for me. That's the one thing we can agree on/do well together, have a good time.

andy said...

Sager was there last night but he was wearing a jacket that looked the fenway crowd.

tim said...

Gonna duck out of the thread for a lil bit to watch/finish cooking

Can't do those two and thread!

laura k said...

That's cool. My nieces and nephews all party with their parents, too.

andy said...

I party with Lester's curve ball

laura k said...

Come On Lester!!!!

Zenslinger said...

Whoops, game time!

Next time I post...we'll be in the ALCS.

andy said...

Buck shit the fuck up. You are not good. You have no fucking clue what you are saying about pitcher's grips.

Rob said...

97!!!!!

tim said...

Well I'm back. Apparently this cooking thing isn't as intensive as I thought.

Good start! Now let's hope Lester can share-a some of those outs with Marky Mark.

laura k said...

OTT!

Rob said...

asdhfgtnhbyaltylfjhL!!!!!!

I LOVE THIS!

Just watching Lester pitch. I've been waiting for two years to see this!

tim said...

Here we goooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Aww fuck I forgot that I'm watching the US feed again. Fucking Frank Caliendo.

Oh well, at least I don't have to deal with that Coolpix shit again.

andy said...

We need a verbal blog with someone to type out everything or voice recog software. that is the future of blogging.

laura k said...

Yay, Tim's here and cooking at the same time.

Have fun Zen!

andy said...

What about that vote for something canadien thing?

laura k said...

Oh my eyes again. Certain ads for certain people I would not vote for. Canadian edition.

andy said...

This is the lineup that will win a game tonight.

Jere said...

I was standing a few feet from Sager for a bit last night, took a close up picture, and I have to say, even the subdued Sager is flashier than anybody else there.

Rob said...

I can't wait to see The Face's Fugly Cousin.

laura k said...

What about that vote for something canadien thing?

What means this?

andy said...

Buck keeps pushing the grip issue.

andy said...

Laura that thing that the Richard guy was talking about the other night that nobody understood.

allan said...

I WANNA LASER

Jere said...

Game 3 Sager. Check out the pinstripes, the tie, the hankerchief.

laura k said...

Oh Andy, that. That's what I was saying "my eyes" about.

We have an election here in one week.

The election was called on Sept 5, election on Oct 14, that's it, the whole thing!
