Where is the poem set? In Stockton California where I did most of my growing up the local minor league team change their name from the Stockton Ports to the Mudville Nine. They claimed the poem was set in Stockton. I called BS back then but they must have had some backup to do such a drastic thing like that. What do you know?
ReplyDeleteStockton apparently was called Mudville (among other names) prior to its incorporation.
ReplyDeleteWikipedia suggests Holliston, MA (author grew up in Worcester) and Stockton, CA (author covered baseball for the SF Examiner) as possible Mudvilles though notes it's probably all just fiction.

Unless it's his secret obsession. I never got the impression Allan's secret obsession would be poetry, but they say you never really know someone...
