Mike Lupica,
Daily News:
They lose to the Boston Red Sox in every possible way this season. They lose when the great Mo Rivera can't get the last out of the game at Fenway, they lose when they can't hold a 6-0 lead at Fenway, they lose when a fast kid, Jacoby Ellsbury, steals home.
They lose five in a row to the Red Sox to start a season for the first time in 24 years because they are 8-for-54 with runners in scoring position and because they have a bunch of bargain basement relief pitchers who can't get a strike or an out when they really need one. The last time they played this way against Boston to start a season was 1985, the year Yogi was the manager and got fired early.
Mark Feinsand,
Daily News:
Could Joe Girardi be headed for the same fate [as Yogi Berra in 1985] if the Yankees don't turn things around quickly? Some fans seemed to be hoping as much, shouting "We Want Torre!" in the ninth inning.
Wallace Matthews,
Newsday:
Teixeira looks like a deer on the subway tracks. CC Sabathia has been a huge disappointment. A.J. Burnett, good so far, is always one fastball away from the DL. Chien-Ming Wang is MIA. ... [Jorge Posada on the DL] means a lot more of Molina, an automatic out in a lineup suddenly filled with them ...
When asked what the Yankees need to do to stop the slide, Girardi offered this nugget: "Players have to step up."
John Harper,
Daily News:
How do the Yankees reverse this troublesome trend of Red Sox dominance? How do they take back The Rivalry? ... [M]aybe the Yankees need to get extreme and go looking for a fight. These teams haven't brawled since 2004 ...
Johnny Damon says the Yankees' 0-5 record against the Red Sox is actually
a good thing:
Because we are 0-5, it's going to make us a better team, a tougher team, a team that's more together, a team that's going to rally behind our players.
Whoo-hoo!
ReplyDeleteMolina: "an automatic out in the lineup"
ReplyDeleteWOW talk about a confidence booster there!
Johnny Damon has never really held a great grasp of logic, has he?

ReplyDeleteJohnny Damon sounds just like the Republican party after the November election.
I was under the impression last night (if not the game before) made it clear to everyone that you can't just use "sparks" and "lighting fires" and "wanting revenge for an earlier sweep" and "hitting our guys" to win, you actually have to be the better team. But John Harper, after all that, THEN goes and writes "the Yanks need to start a fight"?? What a moron. That would actually be a great line if he'd been writing it sarcastically.
ReplyDeleteThe Yanks must know at this point that even if they start a fight, they'll either lose, or, win but lose the game anyway. Pick a fight? How 'bout picking some good pitchers to put in the bullpen?!
Damon, June 1, 2009:
ReplyDelete"We've lost our last 25 games. We are totally BFF -- and UNSTOPPABLE! Woo-hoo!"
Cavemen everywhere are saying Johnny you don't seem to hold a great grasp of logic, do you?
ReplyDeleteTHE STREAK CONTINUES.
ReplyDeleteMWWAAHAHAHAHA
It's clear where Johnny got his "brains".
ReplyDeleteJimmy Damon, December 2005, after the Yankees signed his son:
"Mark it down: It's going to be another Babe Ruth. They sent Johnny off just like they sent off Babe Ruth. It's going to be another big, big mistake. They made the biggest mistake of their lives."
Johnny Damon says the Yankees' 0-5 record against the Red Sox is actually a good thing:
ReplyDeleteIt's good news for Republicans, too!
I didnt hear any "we Want Torre" chants at all last night. I was about 40 rows back from home plate. There were so many empty seats that I just walked up to the very last row on the field level (not the $2,500 section, but the very next section) and simply sat down. They Kicked me out once, but I went back 1/2 hour later and because fo the rain everyone had retreated to these seats, so I sat down again and didnt get moved.
ReplyDeleteAmazing seats. The new stadium is anything but a toilet. I was really amazed.
So their season had better collapse now like ours did after the 5 game beating we took in 06.
