Ortiz Thinking About Getting Eyes Checked

David Ortiz -- mired in what he called the toughest stretch of his professional career -- says he is
thinking about getting my eyes checked, for real. There have been some situations that something has happened to my eyes, my vision. But I'm planning on getting my eyes checked out sometime soon ... just to make sure. We get our eyes checked every year. I'm 20-20. Go and check it out. It's not anything big. I will, though. I seriously will.
First of all, "thinking about it"? "Sometime soon?" WTF? It's not an invasive procedure! Go now!

And second, wouldn't this have been something the team could have had done weeks ago?

Drew walked four times yesterday afternoon -- tying a career high. He has now done it five times.

Maybe they did. There's probably more to this than we're hearing. I wonder if Ortiz has been resisting the idea of having his vision checked. It's silly, but people do, a la Jim Rice.

  2. To second L-girl's comment, as someone who has vision issues since the age of 9 I can attest to the fact that people (including me) can be remarkably, ahem, short-sighted about these things, even when it might have negative consequences.

"Big Papi is finished. His departure from the Red Sox must be dignified."

A hard look at the Tizzle situation.

Aging players do hit walls and fall off cliffs. That's for sure.

I have not given the age question much thought and I think that if Ortiz wanted to take certain drugs to help his body perform as he ages (and recovers from surgery), he could afford some pricey undetectable ones with his salary.

I do note that Smith doesn't say exactly when he wants Theo to cut the Big Man loose. Sadly, the longer his slump continues, the more this seemingly outrageous scenario will become reality.

  4. I welcome Drew to the two spot. He might be a better there, being protected by Youk.

    I like this lineup.

  5. Yeoman work from Denton to gather most of John Sterling's catch-phrases. Wow.

  6. Didn't this just come up a few weeks ago? Someone asked Tito if David maybe can't see the ball, and Tito said "we don't put guys out there who aren't healthy." Something like that.

  7. I'm down with Red and Denton, so I'm not saying this to knock them, but.... yeoman's work? More like cutting and pasting from Wikipedia.

I wonder if there's a list of his non-HR catch phrases somewhere. Like "allll the way to the wall" and "back to back, belly to belly," and "it is high..." and "there's a fast strike" and "that's a killer diller" and "I'm a huge douche."

  8. I don't think it's his eyesight. There's no harm in running the battery of tests to be sure but I honestly believe that's just another excuse for the fact that he is in a bad funk. Of course, how much more leeway do the Sox and Tito give him? I don't have that answer but...

I look at this the way I'm looking at Varitek this year compared to last. Even if his average is only 28 points higher than last season, he's already close to matching and passing most of his batting totals from last season. In short, I'm not hiding my eyes when he comes to the plate these days.

  9. Jere, I'm just curious, did you already know the Wiki entry for Sterling, and you recognized it in that SG post? Or do you check various sources to see if posts are pulled from somewhere? Or something else?

Instantly made me think of Jerry Trupiano when you said that. Check out the SoSH bio.

  11. Guys

John Sterling topped 'em all on Tuesday. After Hideki Matsui hit a 3 run bomb....Sterling freaked out and screamed: "ANNNN A-BOMB! FOR A-....." and then abruptly stopped. Realizing the complete and utter moron he was, he then said: "Well it would have been an A-Bomb from A-Rod, if he had hit it...instead, it's a home run from the Sayonara Kid..."

Yankees are the worst at one thing....radio announcing. Sterling sucks

  12. I suppose I should have scoured the interweb to make certain that collection of Sterling phrases was not anywhere else before I gave Denton credit. I withdraw the adjective.

I am saying Jere allready knew it...he is a yankee hater to the highest level, and when you are passionate about hating something , and you grew up where he did , you need ammo to fire back at all yankee fans, and in the end the yankee hater knows more about the yankees then the yankee fan .......

  14. "and in the end the yankee hater knows more about the yankees then the yankee fan"

    Or thinks he does.

  15. I know the current Yankee players and prospects better than a lot of Yankee fans I meet. Not Yankee history, though, definitely not.

  16. It all depends on how much you follow baseball, I think. A lot of Red Sox fans, Yankee fans, fans of any team aren't necessarily big fans of the sport, just the team. If the team's not doing well, they don't follow the sport.

Some people here are probably the same with the Celtics or Patriots. If the teams are doing well, they watch. If not, they don't follow basketball or football (eg).

Some of us are baseball fans first, and are always going to know more about the other teams (especially rivals) than the casual fans of those teams.

But I'm still curious how Jere spotting the Wiki entry.

  17. To answer the question: I went to redsock's link, and read what Denton wrote, that he doesn't listen to Sterling regularly, and "took a few minutes" to research it. So I knew that this wasn't a list he'd been making or anything (I also realize he's not trying to pass it off as that). I went to Sterling's Wiki page, and there was exactly what Denton had, right down to the headers. While I'd been to Sterling's page before and knew his phrases were talked about on there, I didn't see Denton's thing and say "hey I've seen this exact list before." But I did think that if he was researching it, he probably went to Wikipedia first, as that's pretty much the world's current first step in any kind of research. So I checked it, and there it was.

    9casey, thanks.

  18. And just now I checked that page's edit history, just in case someone had taken it from SG and put it on there, and that is not the case.

  19. Good detective work. Not something I ever would have thought to do!

  20. My emphasis for humour.

    Julian Benbow, Globe:
Red Sox manager Terry Francona tonight downplayed the fuss over David Ortiz saying he would get his vision checked. "First of all, I should have never not played him because he gets talkative when he doesn’t play," Francona said. "If somebody says something to a trainer, rather than hand him some Visine, we’ve got great people around, might as well get what works best. And the fact that he’s getting it done Monday should tell you right now ... this wasn’t a really big deal on my radar.”
