Me, that evening:
The Game Of The Year. I'm speechless.(box score)
Today's game had it all -- a brawl featuring A-Rod and Varitek, 4 Red Sox errors (including 3 on three consecutive plays), New York taking a quick 3-0 lead, Boston coming back 4-3 (with 4 hits on four consecutive pitches in the 4th), Tito getting ejected, blowing the lead and trailing 9-4, cutting the gap to 9-8, falling back 10-8, and then winning the game 11-10 with a 2-run Mueller home run off Rivera in the 9th. ... And two perfect innings from Ramiro Mendoza.
Every batter Rivera faced -- all five -- hit the ball hard. ...
This game could really turn this team around. They played hard Friday, but fell short. Today, they stormed right back after both the fight and the Yankees' 6-run 6th and puts several runs on the board. ... I'm ready for a 20-4 run. I believe! How about you?
It took a couple of weeks to get going, but from August 10 to September 3, the Red Sox went 20-3!
I KNEW July 24 had resonance in my brain, I just couldn't figure out why.
ReplyDeleteI was looking at the calendar thinking, "this date is significant"
When you click on the link marked "me" .its amazing how there were no comments that game. today, would easily generate over 2000....
ReplyDeleteIs that one picture Kapler and Sturtze?
ReplyDeleteThat team had some personality, an edge, a chip on its shoulder...I am waiting to see what the personality of this team will be.It seems as though over the last couple of years they have become quite "vanilla' in personality and swagger....
"But he kept his mask on!!!" /obsessed nyy fans
ReplyDelete9C, I don't think Allan had turned on comments yet in 2004. I think no one commented because they couldn't. But you're right, can you imagine the gamethread that game would produce?!?!
300-500 comments on the fight alone - easily.
ReplyDeleteThis game is one of the reasons that I love Tek.
ReplyDeleteHere is a file of newspaper articles from Boston and New York the next day, along with photos and a video. I hope the article file open properly.
ReplyDeleteAt some point, I posted and linked to Youtube video of a semi-scuffle between Dumbo and an opposing batter. Words exchanged at the plate and there was some shoving and whatnot. Dumbo kept mask on the entire time. Stupid me, I did not save the video and it was later unavailable.
Yes, I did not turn on comment until the beginning of the 2005 season. I cannot remember why I did not have them on until then. Seems weird now.
As if in a fight you're going to have the presence of mind to take your mask off...
ReplyDeleteBy the way, did you see Kapler almost break up the perfecto yesterday? He seems to pop up a lot in replayable MLB footage, like a basebal Zelig.
Nice! Love the blatant MFY bias in that 30 second faux clip.
ReplyDeleteThis game is one of the reasons that I love Tek.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to know you don't always disapprove of fighting. :)
I think baseball fight are usually kind of dumb but *that* one was undeniably cool!
ReplyDeleteThe most memorable moment of that regular season, no doubt!
ReplyDeleteWhile I remember July 24, 2004 fondly as well, I have a slightly different take on it. Please check out my new blog at www.freepedro.com
