Royals - 000 304 010 - 8 13 1David Ortiz hit his 300th career home run in the first inning, but Manny Delcarmen and Justin Masterson could not hold a 5-3 lead in the sixth.
Red Sox - 301 010 010 - 6 10 1
Boston had a golden scoring opportunity in the eighth. They trailed 8-5, but had the bases loaded with one out. Down 0-2, Mark Kotsay fouled off five pitches from Juan Cruz before lofting a sacrifice fly to center field. With Sox on first and third and two outs, Joakim Soria came out of the pen and quickly struck out Nick Green (who had singled and doubled earlier) on a filthy 12-6 curveball inside.
Dustin Pedroia singled, doubled and homered -- his AL-leading 14th three-hit game of the season; he also scored two runs. Kevin Youkilis singled and doubled and scored twice. Daniel Bard finished the eighth and pitched the ninth, striking out three of the four batters he faced.
The Yankees beat the Twins 6-4 during the day, so Boston and New York are tied yet again -- at 51-34 -- atop the AL East. The MFY head to Anaheim for the weekend.

Luke Hochevar (5.08, 85 ERA+) / Brad Penny (4.67, 100 ERA+)
Since May 3, Penny has been remarkably consistent -- and quite productive for a 5th starter.
A 3.68 ERA in 12 starts. At least six innings pitched in eight of those 12 starts. He's allowed two runs or fewer in half of the starts -- and three runs or fewer in 10 of the 12 starts. He is allowing a lot of baserunners, however: 97 hits + walks in 71 innings.
Zack Greinke (2.12, 203 ERA+) pitched last night, so the Red Sox will not see him during this four-game series. Boston plays in Kansas City September 21-24.
The Yankees (1 GB) play this afternoon in Minnesota (Aceves/Liriano).

Julio Lugo left the team yesterday because of a family matter. There was no word on when he would return.
David Ortiz's home run last night was #299 of his career. He has 773 RBI with Boston, tied with Rico Petrocelli for 8th on the Red Sox All-Time List.
Jed Lowrie was activated and optioned to Lowell (A). He went 2-for-3 last night with two doubles, two walks, two runs and an RBI. The earliest the Red Sox could bring Lowrie back to Boston is July 18 -- the second game after the All-Star break.
Daisuke Matsuzaka is in Fort Myers doing spring training drills, though it's in the heat of July now and not the relative cool of February/March. Francona:
[I]f you go down to Fort Myers in the middle of July at 7:30 in the morning, and the first day you run the shuttle and the second day you run the mile-and-a-half, he did a good job.Steve Buckley says Wakefield should start the All-Star Game. Eric Wilbur says (and I agree) that's coo coo bananas.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 311 of 311Allanian, now that's a nice word!
I would have said Allanesque. I like yours better.
And yes, we are doomed, btw.
Am I ever going to take another baseball road trip again?? Ever??? Boo hoo.
If my calculations are correct, we're set up perfectly for a Papi walk off salami, no?
201 = me
do we still announce 201 anymore?
good math, ofer.
Laura, you have a baseball road trip coming up in a few weeks, IIRC.
here we go!
time to rock and roll
Ofer, you probably know more American geography than most Americans (obviously including me). Our school system does a terrible job at geography (world and US), IMHO.
Nah, it's just that when I was working in Shakopee, MN, I planned to do a month long (or so) trip down the Mississippi. Start out in the twin cities and go down all the way to New Orleans. That's the only reason I knew that about St. Louis. Just to set your mind at ease: I had no idea there was even such a thing as a Missouri River until 10 minutes ago.
As much as I love Fenway and am totally psyched for JoS1, going to one city to see 2 games is not a baseball road trip to me. I mean 4 or 5 or 6 cities, tons of games, lots of traveling.
OK, I feel a smidge better. :) Not really. I should know where the Mississippi River is.
dear nesn:
pls stop showing the razor burn/acne on cruz's neck.
thx.
I also want to go to KC, looks like a nice park they got there and seems like it would be a fun trip. Fried chicken and mashed potatoes sounds amazing too.
Now let's fucking come back now, alright?!
Ah, I needed a better definition of baseball road trip. That does sound like fun. I have never done that. We just go to baseball games in cities we visit, if we can.
All right. Tying run at the plate.
LBJ = Tying Run
here we go...!
Baseball road trip would be awesome.
Now show us why you're batting 6th LBJ!
This is place I've heard of in KC.
Stroud's
Let's go Lyndon
OK, at least no DP.
Tek, hit it OUT.
surprise me, cap'n.
.... is your mystery ship gassed up and ready to sail?
l-girl, it's not me or ish talking food tonight!
Yes!!
HAHAHAHA SUCKERS
Can't tag him with your legs.
Ok, forget the fried chicken and mashed potatoes.
Breakfast - Eggs, grits and toast.
Lunch - Order the chicken fried steak, with corn and potatoes and gravy with a side of cole slaw.
Dinner (or supper) - Rib eye steaks or T-bone steak. With baked potato, with butter and sour cream and chives and vegetable of your choice.
I guess that trip would take in KC, St Louis, both parks in Texas.
Safe??? YES!
Maybe it would start in Cinncinnati.
All right, big chance here. USE IT.
Let's go Kotter, give us a welcome back.
Nope. I've been told in no uncertain terms: Stroud's = pan-fried chicken and mashed potatoes.
Come on kotsie, lets get them home.
aw, s1c, that sounds so good....
So much beef s1c, goddamn.
Fried chicken is one of my favorites, no way I'm giving that up. But some sort of steak there is definitely in order and would be awesome as well.
Thanks for the link L!
johngoldfine, yes, and it's not what i had for dinner, it's what i'm fantasizing about having for dinner on a make-believe road trip that i may never do!
Win it for us Mark...no pressure here.
I'm from NYC - a good steak is not that big a deal to me (although I love them). Fried chicken...! Now we're talking.
RSVP
Phew.
be our hero kotsay...
I do not think I would find much to eat at Stroud's.
I'm from NYC - a good steak is not that big a deal to me (although I love them). Fried chicken...! Now we're talking.
Just wondering: what's the best steak place in NY, IYO? (does IYO exist?)
OK, one run in.
A steak in NY over a steak from kc. Blasphemous.
Alright, that's one and we're still cooking.
Long ABs usually end in favor of the batter. Here's hoping.
Steak is the real thing in NY, s1c. I know you're not a fan of the city, but the food is pretty good there.
Shit, KC manager being proactive. I don't like Green's chances here.
best steak in nyc... I'd probably go with Peter Luger's, in Brooklyn.
Yeah, just one thing I would eat on that menu.
And I get so sick of salmon.
Nasty shit.
l-girl, you need a snack NOW!
best steak in nyc... I'd probably go with Peter Luger's, in Brooklyn.
I would have to agree, from those I've had. Plus, their creamed spinach is great!
Now salmon is not something I'd eat in Kansas City...
Do you like mashed potatoes? :)
Ofer said the secret word! RUNS NOW!
Damn. Well, only two more runs to make up in the ninth.
What in the fuck was that.
Embarassing, that's what that was.
snack, ha ha
ofer, does your dad have a favourite steak place there?
Mashed potatoes? Eh, not so much. I am more a pasta or rice person than a potato person.
ofer, does your dad have a favourite steak place there?
Yeah, but it's not very original. Let's just say it starts with a P, ends with an R, and is in Brooklyn...
The provocative comments that required I be told that I am an asshole, or to STFU, or that it is unbearable to have put up with the likes of me was to say I don't like what I am seeing in the context with which I am familiar, having stared at these games for a long, long time.
I am aware that a bad stretch does not doom a season, but thanks anyway for the lesson. I have not said it would; I said it could.
Weren't you surprised earlier this year at how well MDC and Ramirez pitched? Didn't you think that it was remarkable how healthy Lowell seemed to be after his surgery and long recovery?
So I will move on and yes, L-girl, find other Red Sox sites to visit so that I don't rain on your parade. If there is one, and we are all spraying champagne in October, all this will seem trivial and minor, to be sure. I hope that this the case.
BTW, the Papi walk off grand slam is still an option. Although I'll settle for any kind of walk off hit.
I've got a potato crop coming soon, amy--fresh-dug baby Red Norlands with parsley and horseradish from the garden. Me, potato person!
potatoes are pretty much my favourite food
I didn't say I don't like potatoes, but when the server asks whether I want pasta, rice or potatoes with my dinner, I always choose either pasta or rice, not potatoes. I love sweet potatoes though, and I occasionally eat a baked potato. Just not my first choice.
Best catch Lugo's made in a year.
act like a jerk all week, then feign surprise when people lose patience with you. typical troll behaviour.
Fuckin' love potatoes. Haven't had any in awhile though... johngoldfine, that sounds amazing.
Horseradish is great too.
Pasta and rice, I also love!
I love food! hahaha
After the Norlands come the Russett bakers and a whole bunch of silly weird-colored potatoes I planted to amuse my wife....
Barth: We all watch the games. Many of us have watched the Sox for 30+ years. None of us have any special or unique insight granted by age.
I cannot imagine any group of Red Sox fans anywhere will welcome regular talk of 1978 and daily fears of imminent collapse, but good luck finding your niche.
i didn't say you didn't like potatoes either.
i just said they are my favourite food. :)
All this food talk got me hungry, so I'm eating breakfast before I even went to sleep. It's already light out, btw.
Laura, did you know that the word potato comes from nahuatl? And that potatoes didn't even exist in Europe until they came to America?
A gentleman farmer, John? Very cool, growing stuff you eat!
I'm calling for some drama...the good kind.
lol, the silly weird coloured potatoes.
a chef that came over and cooked us dinner one night mentioned that he was planning on making multi-coloured gnocchi, sounded cool.
Drew walk, pedroia smash, yook bomb, i go rafting happy!
Ofer, are you still on Eastern time? When do you sleep??? I assume you are not yet in school or working, keeping these crazy hours!
Not all that much of a gentleman, Amy, but you're in, as they say, the ballpark.
And I love potatoes, btw.
lol, i just put a tray of wings in the oven. nothing gourmet but hey, they're delicious, and i'm starving.
in peru, we saw hundreds of varieties of potatoes - all different colours and shapes. that's where the potato orginated, the andes. they grow something like 550 varieties there. they're beautiful to see in the markets.
RE coloured potatoes: blue corn tastes like corn. But is way cooler.
no home runs though -- those things are rally killers
I know, just setting the record straight so that when I say I had potatoes for dinner, no one says I said I hated potatoes! :)
yeah you dont see a lot of naturally blue coloured food. cool when you do though.
Potatoes are the world's fourth largest food crop, following rice, wheat, and maize.[1]
well, better get the W here or it will surely be a sign of imminent collapse.
nice play by sorryuh there.
"Laura, did you know that the word potato comes from nahuatl? And that potatoes didn't even exist in Europe until they came to America?"
I sure do know it :)
Gnocchi... good gnocchi is orgasmic.
So we have to wait for 2 outs for the comeback, is that it?
Can we please score two runs?
Or better yet, three?
s1c, citation needed.
Amy, I woke up at 4PM today. It doesn't really have anything to do with Eastern Time. I've always been like this, when I'm not socially obligated to get up early, I don't. I'm just a night person by nature, I guess.
tim--if you hunt around here you can see some of those silly neon colored potatoes my wife digs (actually I do the digging....)
https://www.mainepotatolady.com/ordering.asp
4 pm, Ofer! Wow, even in my teens, the latest I ever slept was maybe 1:30 pm. And I used to think I was a night person!
Uh oh, one out to go.
Weak.
You want me to give you a ticket?
clean
Poop.
Fuck. That pisses me off. We are now tied with the Yankees?
very clean water
just like 1978!!! OMG we are doooomed!!!1one!1
FUCK.
Well, looks like we're fucked. Time to make vacation plans for October.
Speaking of vacation, I'm off to Ottawa River for 3 days/2 nights for camping/beer drinking/rafting with 200 of my closest friends! Enjoy the weekend JoS. Good night!
Fuck.
Well, it was a great season. I just wanna say thanks a lot to our blog hosts, and let's just hope that next year will bring about a better result. Winter comes early this year... VERY early.
Talk to y'all in April...
sorry for being flip. we're tied, it sucks, we'll win tomorrow. onward.
Have a great trip, Tim!
ha ha tim and ofer, and here i am apologizing. thanks for the laughs. see you tomorrow!
(have fun tim!)
hey you jerks -- this is a LOSS --
you like losing??????? talking about potatoes and rafts and typing hahaha -- you better get pissed off and break shit RIGHT NOW and if you don't wake up in the morning as pissed off as I am now, i'm a-gonna kick your ass.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Nice to be tied for 1 night :)
Feels like we've been chasing forever
Enjoy it while you can.
lol, and the knobs come out of the woodwork.
as allan said before, hope to see you in october when you come back to receive your dully deserved abuse!
Went up to Portland to watch Ryan Kalish, Lars Anderson, Josh Reddick and the rest of the Sea Dogs playing the Binghamton Mets. We left after 8 to beat the traffic, the Mets had just taken the lead 2-1. Pretty good game.
Not good for the big club tonight, I see. Heard the ending on the radio. My legs are crampy, my sunglasses broke, and I'm hungry. Damn.
hope to see you in october when you come back to receive your dully deserved abuse!
Reminds me of "Gutch220".
He gave us shit for writing off the MFY after they whipped the Tigers in the first game of the 2006 ALDS. The Tigers won the next three to take the series -- and for some unknown reason we never heard another peep from good ol' Gutch ...
Here we are asking "Where are you Guuuuuutch?"
"lol, and the knobs come out of the woodwork."
Tim...I read the blog everyday, and post a few times a week...I don't pop up only when the Yanks win. Hate the Royals though....those pesky SOB's took a game from us back in April....I'd be shocked if you guys don't finish 'em off this weekend.
