G103: Red Sox 4, Orioles 0

Red Sox - 100 012 000 - 4 13 0
Orioles - 000 000 000 - 0 8 0
Beckett (7-6-0-2-5, 107) and Kevin Youkilis (4-for-4, with a walk and dong) led the way to victory, with Josh Reddick collecting two doubles in his first major league start. Jason Bay and Jacoby Ellsbury each had two singles and LBJ stole his 48th base of the season.

Victor Martinez went only 1-for-5, but his sixth inning single drove in a run, and he later scored.

Dustin Pedroia clubbed a first-inning home run to give the Red Sox a quick 1-0 lead. Boston squandered plenty of chances to add to that lead, leaving the bases loaded in the second and fifth innings, and leaving two men on in the third, sixth, and ninth. Total LOB: 15.

However, Baltimore was equally inept at bringing in runners -- or Beckett and Hideki Okajima slammed the door in their faces. It's a matter of perspective. The Orioles had the first two batters on base in each of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, but could not score. Boston got double plays in each frame to keep the whitewash intact.

Daniel Bard pitched the ninth, retiring the side and striking out the final two Orioles on flithy curveballs. In his last 12 appearances, Bard has pitched 14 scoreless innings (two unearned runs) and has allowed four hits and no walks, while striking out 23 batters.

Bay left the game after five innings with a right hamstring cramp.

The Yankees were routed by the White Sox this afternoon 14-4, so the red Sox are only 0.5 GB.
Example
Josh Beckett (3.44, 136 ERA+) / David Hernandez (3.20, 143 ERA+)

Both Victor Martinez and Casey Kotchman are expected to be with the Red Sox for tonight's game in Baltimore.

Theo Epstein likes Martinez's versatility:
He can catch and give 'Tek a little bit of a rest behind the plate, and he can play first base and get some at-bats there. He can DH a little bit ... He provides some offensive support and some depth at the same time.
Terry Francona:
In getting Victor, we are getting a middle-of-the-order, switch-hitting bat that can catch, play first and DH. It's a very valuable piece.
Martinez is 30 years old; he will turn 31 two days before Christmas. This season, his hitting line of .284/.368/.464, 115 OPS+, gives him the 4th-best on-base, 4th best slugging and 3rd-best OPS+ on the team. However, his numbers have slipped every month this year:
          PA AVG OBP SLG OPS
Mar-Apr 101 .386 .446 .636 1.082
May 126 .321 .413 .468 .881
June 115 .240 .322 .480 .802
July 93 .175 .280 .250 .530
Clay Buchholz was happy to still be in a Red Sox uniform at the end of the day:
I was a little nervous, because I wasn't getting any feedback from anybody. It's a helpless feeling knowing you have no say in whatever goes on, to get here today and walk around not knowing what's going on. ... The organization is awesome. They've treated me about as good as a person could be treated.
Justin Masterson writes his final blog post for Comcast SportsNet.

4 PM: Yankees/White Sox.

1918 - Pittsburgh beats Boston 2-0 21. Art Nehf pitches a complete game for the Braves.

  7. Just announced:

    McBeth optioned to AAA.
    Kottaras to the DL.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Today's Globe:

"Drew did not play because of a slight groin strain and will be out of the lineup tonight as well. The injury forced him out of Thursday night’s game when he felt a twinge while legging out a double. Drew is 11 for his last 25 while building a seven-game hit streak. "I feel like I’m swinging the bat where I don’t want to miss any time at all," Drew said. "But that being said, I’ve got to be smart about it. If I get on base and had to go first to third or something, it’s a very good chance I could mess it up pretty bad. I think in a couple days it should respond pretty well."

  9. Thanks for clearing that up for me...Is Kottaras on that I am out of options DL?

we had Mcbeth and Bard in the bullpen at the same time..

  11. Sopmeone at SoSH asked what Kottaras's injury was, and someone else replied: "Wakefield's back."

He is out of options, so he will likely not return before September 1.

I saw somewhere last night, I don't remember where, that Wake is a lot worse than orginally stated...

  13. This is from yesterday's Globe:

Tim Wakefield, also on the DL, said before yesterday’s game that his lower-back strain is improving and that he’ll accompany the team on its 10-day, nine-game road trip, which begins tonight in Baltimore.
Wakefield, who is second on the team with 11 wins, said he’ll continue throwing bullpen sessions, and eventually will throw a simulated game. He’s not expecting a rehab start in the minors, and said he hopes to be activated for the series against Tampa Bay, which starts Tuesday.

Ready for next Tuesday? Seems too soon.

There's a joke about a dong in here somewhere, but I can't quite come up with it.

  15. Allan, are you watching the MFY game? Hairston just flew into a force out.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have it running, but was not watching.

GDGD says 7-5 on the FC.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It was basically a bases loaded single, but Passedballa is fucking slow, waited to see if Quentin would catch it, and ended up being forced out by a hair on 3rd.

  20. I have not been able to thread since JOS 1. :( Have fun, and go Sox! I am off to dinner with Maddy and Harvey after an amazingly gorgeous day on the Cape.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Anybody threading the Sox game, or only Yankees?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm watching the MFY, since I can. I love the White Sox!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love Pedroia, too!

    And now, VMart's first AB...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Fuck yeah!

And fuck yeah to MFY losing so far....0.5 to be I hope!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ofer, I like the White Sox too. I may be the only person you know who likes the new Comiskey Park, now called something else.

    V-Mart up.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Victor Martinez getting huge cheers in Balmore. :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I was a little suprised to see him third..

    ReplyDelete
  28. What is it with our catchers SASNHEs

    ReplyDelete
  29. Hahahahaha! Posada is a fucking idiot. He just tagged out a runner at the plate with his glove... but the ball was in his bare hand.

    ReplyDelete
  30. So how was jos1?...it seems as though all had a good time...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Probably...guy spent his whole career on one team and now so suddenly on another team in the middle of a pennant race.

    ReplyDelete
  32. L, I only love the other Sox when they're sweeping the MFY. Most days I'm fairly apathetic about them.

    Hate their announcers, though, obviously.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You have to hate their announcers. That's the law, I believe.

I like the White Sox. I like old teams that had long droughts.

9C, JoS1 was great. You shoulda been there.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Except for the outcome of the game, that wasn't great.

The Sox split a 4-game series, and lose the 2 A & I are at. Bah.

  37. Doing work with NESN sound on.

They must have effed *something* up.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I didn't bother posting the NYY score b/c I thought everyone was watching it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. They must have effed *something* up.

    Not according to 1918.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Get that kid the ball!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was away for a vacation in North Conway NH for last week.

    ReplyDelete
  42. MFY done. Now, on to some link hunting...

    ReplyDelete
  43. MFY: 002 001 100 - 4 8 1
    CWS: 060 010 16x - 14 17 2

Coke allowed 6 in the 8th!

    1 GB!

    ReplyDelete
  44. So NYY has lost 3 in a row. Are they dooooooooomed? Or do the SoxDoomers save that for their own team?

    Yes

    ReplyDelete
  46. I was going to say only Sox teams are doomed ... :<(

    ReplyDelete
  47. Even I wait til we've won for that. Or at least ahead through 7!

I hear that, and I for one, don't celebrate second place.....

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well, getting closer is good, gotta start somewhere. But right now it's 1 GB.

    ReplyDelete
  51. FUCKING TRUPED! Thanks Obie.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Oh man I was totally truped. I was already typing PAPI DONG. But no.

    ReplyDelete
  53. FKR also won, so they are 5 GB.

    ReplyDelete
  54. And now the radio is being interfered with by another radio station. I can't listen to this anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Be smart, Tek. Do not squander.

    ReplyDelete
  56. When Obie made that call I blasted the volume on my mp3 player and then I heard, "MAKES THE CATCH." DAMMIT!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Scheisse. 72 pitches through 3, but only one run...

    ReplyDelete
  58. Take out FY's dong.

We got a double, 3 singles, and 3 walks -- and no runs.

    ReplyDelete
  59. My friend and I just came back from a 20 mile bike ride that went up a mountain. A tiny mountain but still, it's the big mountain in town, Mount Agamenticus. 692 feet, not bad, but still it's quite an accomplishment.

From the top you can see the White Mountains to the north, including Mt. Washington, and to the south you can see part of Portland to the north, the ocean and islands 10 miles out, and to the south, (I've never seen this but I need to find binoculars and a clear day so I can!!!)... The skyscrapers of Boston! From Maine!

And we rode our bikes up it.

On the way down the road has two very tight hairpin turns... I got up to 40 MPH and then had to jump on the brakes to make the turn - almost didn't! My back tire locked up, but I was able to go around the very outside of the turn. Then down a straight, I hit 43.5 MPH, fastest ever on my bike. WOW.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Wow Ish that sounds so cool.

Also probably my biggest fear, why I am useless (and petrified) going downhill on a bike.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Just trying to be optimistic with Beckett going bird-hunting tonight :) fine, Happy V-Mart day (which will hopefully also soon also become half-game out day ) :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I am infinitely optimistic. But still. We have to win the game first.

    ReplyDelete
  63. we are not at this game. therefore, the sox have a very good chance of winning.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I was sure counting chickens pre-hatch on Tues night.

We were announcing the NYY score every inning - ppl around us were laughing.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yeah, you definitely did choose well with JoS1. It was an exciting game, I'll give you that.

    ReplyDelete
  66. It was exciting. Weds night A & I saw another exciting game.

I would have traded a little excitement for a win, but whatta ya gonna do.

    ReplyDelete
  67. jeez i cannot you know listen to you know roberts for i think another you know second.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Here's an idea: stop listening. You have at least 3 other choices.

    ReplyDelete
  69. i am on mute.
    what is "nomar outburst"?

    ReplyDelete
  70. @ JoS1:

Joe Grav: Come on LBJ, do it for 10,000 teenage girls in New England!

L-girl: And one middle-aged woman in Toronto!

    ReplyDelete
  71. i am on mute.

    that's a 4th choice I hadn't even thought of

    what is "nomar outburst"?

    is this a riddle? anagram?

    ReplyDelete
  72. Cool pattern to Hernandez's PC:

    26-24-22 20 - 92

    ReplyDelete
  73. "L-girl: And one middle-aged woman in Toronto!"

And once again, I wasn't going to be the one to say it! :>)

    ReplyDelete
  74. I just pasted something from this thread into a legal document. Hazards of the job.

    ReplyDelete
  75. And once again, I wasn't going to be the one to say it! :>)

    :-D

Joe repeated it after I said it, then apologized. :)

    ReplyDelete
  76. some news item on nesn's sportsdesk: "nomar outburst"

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hi all, on vacation until Thursday, but enjoying your threads, especially the trade rumor thread yesterday. Fitting start to the VMart era, a 1-0 game. Hope JOS1 was fun! Off to the pool w family

    ReplyDelete
  78. Westcoast, your crossword puzzle was a huge hit!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think Roberts forgot that the Rays won the division last year.

    ReplyDelete
  80. still would rather listen to him than Buck Martinez or *gag* John Sterling though

    ReplyDelete
  81. He's sort of on par with Jamie Campbell, sounds like a complete idiot most of the time but doesn't piss me off really.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Buffy > Roberts

I don't hate Roberts the way Allan does, but Buffy is at least a professional announcer. Roberts... no.

Buffyvision really isn't so bad - unless the Jays are winning.

    ReplyDelete
  83. wft v-mart?

    hey - martinez's father's name is rotciv.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Heidi: "And he's only given up one run."

    DO: "Deep to left field....!"

    ReplyDelete
  85. HE IS THE SULTAN ...

HE IS THE SULTAN OF SWEAT

    ReplyDelete
  86. Who the hell is Heidi?

    ReplyDelete
  87. lots of boys here are hot for her, or at least used to be

    ReplyDelete
  88. Hi, I go away for awhile and there's a whole bunch of new Sox on the team. WTH?!

    ReplyDelete
  89. You were away w/o internet or TV? Lucky you.

    ReplyDelete
  90. You were away w/o internet or TV? Lucky you.

Yes, I was off *trying* to climb a mountain near Yellowstone, but I got chased down by a blizzard. The irony is it's 96 here today.
Then, before that, my life was consumed, *utterly, thoroughly consumed* for about three weeks by moving into a new house.

    ReplyDelete
  91. so reddick got his 1st ML hit today. i must have been off working.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Pepe, that sounds more exciting than the trade deadline. Mtn climbing and blizzards.

    ReplyDelete
  93. kirk looks constipated

hey lowrie -- break outta that slump anytime, okay?

    ReplyDelete
  94. DR just said Mark Freakin Hendrickson was "like" Justin Masterson? WTH? I mean OK they can both start and relieve but one doesn't totally suck....slight difference...

    ReplyDelete
  95. Pepe, that sounds more exciting than the trade deadline. Mtn climbing and blizzards.

I didn't find it exciting. I found it damned exasperating. Kind of like watching the standings there for about a week.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Do not understand why any team would bring Hendrickson into a close game....glad I'm not an O's fan.

    ReplyDelete
  97. My fucking TV at the hotel keeps turning off and on with no apparent reason. It's very annoying. I only plugged it in to see the MFY get pounded (was worth it).

    ReplyDelete
  98. where the hell did that ball end up?

    ReplyDelete
  99. meuniermr sure says "hell" a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  100. so reddick got his 1st ML hit today. i must have been off working.

Hee, hee. I heard his name was "Reddick" and I was expecting Vin Diesel to come to the plate.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Castig says Masterson is in for the Spiders.

Castig will never get over Masterson.

    ReplyDelete
  102. whew that was a close shave

    ReplyDelete
  103. PFFFT. Mora always pulls off something against us.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Surprised the Tribe is using Masterson as a reliever. I thought at least he would get a chance to start with that team [Hell he'd probably be their ace not that they've traded Lee)

    ReplyDelete
  105. I think he'll be starting next year.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Probably trying for a hit, it almost worked.

    ReplyDelete
  107. lbj now tied w/ crawford for AL SBs

    ReplyDelete
  108. extra mart, i like that

    yooooook having a good day!

    ReplyDelete
  109. Only 7 more for the team record for LBJ, no?

    ReplyDelete
  110. Uh oh what has happened to Bay?

    ReplyDelete
  111. Ofer, 6 more to tie team record, 7 to go ahead - 54.

    ReplyDelete
  112. L, that's what I thought.

PHing for Bay? Just resting him up for tomorrow's day game, ya think?

    ReplyDelete
  113. Our LOBotomy has been repaired at last!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Weird move it isn't a blowout (yet anyway) Hope Bay's ok.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Just resting him up for tomorrow's day game, ya think?

    sure hope so

    ReplyDelete
  116. My back is killing me. Something about screaming down dirt roads at 25 mph is not real good for the lower back.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Orsillo just Gooched Beckett.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Tight Hamstring per the radio.

    ReplyDelete
  119. My back is killing me. Something about screaming down dirt roads at 25 mph is not real good for the lower back.

I got a blister on my heel the size of a half-dollar.

    ReplyDelete
  120. hey, there's too many baserunners on.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Ow. Well luckily I didn't get that horrible sunburn like I did when my dad and I did our 65 mile bike ride two weeks ago.

    ReplyDelete
  122. HA! Had 'em all the way there.

    ReplyDelete
  123. There are suddenly *no* baserunners! :)

    ReplyDelete
  124. starting to develop some hate for this rye-mold guy he has been killing the Sox (before tonight anyway)

    ReplyDelete
  125. anyone see castig on nesn w/ heidi yesterday? they are talking about it... sounds like castig was inadvertantly in on heidi interview w/ masterson?

ah, is this what ish was talking about yesterday, castig hugging masterson?

    ReplyDelete
  126. The new guy is a doubles machine!

    ReplyDelete
  127. L, Castig was interviewing Masterson right after Heidi finished with him. NESN did the interview live so you could see Castig walk up after Heidi walked away but the cameras stayed on Masterson and Castig.

    ReplyDelete
  128. ok, we have a big blister and a killing lower back, plus an old sunburn.

best to stay home in your chair :)

    ReplyDelete
  129. Amazingly premature idea: what if we don't sign Bay OR Holliday in the winter?

    ReplyDelete
  130. thanks ish. apparently it was a mistake, castig thought heidi was done but she wasn't.

    ReplyDelete
  131. masterson = 3 scoreless innings

    ReplyDelete
  132. Reddick with the double d.

    Reddick!
"You do not know who you are @#$%& with...."

    ReplyDelete
  133. Huh. It was a quick turnaround from Heidi interview to Castig interview. She thanked Masterson and he thanked her, then about three to five seconds later Castig swooped in.

But it made for some cool footage of the side of baseball you don't see.

    ReplyDelete
  134. ok, we have a big blister and a killing lower back, plus an old sunburn.

best to stay home in your chair :)

    I'm back going after a 9,000-footer Tuesday!
Ouch, I *hate* sunburn! I use 65 sunblock.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Pepe, I rode 65 miles two weeks ago, three states... 7 hours under the sun. I put sunscreen on my arms and my neck but not on my legs or face! BIG mistake. I was dealing with that sunburn all week and it's STILL peeling two weeks later.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I am back from dinner, two cosmos down, great food, and sooo happy to see the Sox in the lead!

    ReplyDelete
  137. Pepe, I rode 65 miles two weeks ago, three states... 7 hours under the sun. I put sunscreen on my arms and my neck but not on my legs or face! BIG mistake. I was dealing with that sunburn all week and it's STILL peeling two weeks later.

Geez, four runs on four hits. That's kind of an ouch. Good thing we got 2007 Beckett. I tend to forget about sunblock on my neck.
Another reason I was gone is that in my few spare moments I was watching a lot of Tour de France. OMG, Contador and Cavendish are amazing. And Lance did pretty well, too.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Hi Amy, you wouldn't have liked the beginning of this game - major squanders. But we seem to have straightened out.

    ReplyDelete
  139. V-Mart RBI + 2 2Bs for Reddick

    ReplyDelete
  140. Pepe I couldn't believe Alberto Contador. What an athlete. And Lance, too! Couldn't believe he stayed right there with him. His body is more like a machine than a human body, it seems.

    ReplyDelete
  141. LOL, Allan, we were listening to the radio on the way home, and I said, no joke, who the hell is Reddick??

    ReplyDelete
  142. So ---
    WHO THE HELL IS REDDICK?

    ReplyDelete
  143. His body is more like a machine than a human body, it seems.

    Steroids are amazing, aren't they.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Amy, do you read Allan's blog or just the comments? :)

    ReplyDelete
  145. You could say it's 2 runs on 10 hits, and a couple of solo dongs. And six walks, BTW. Major squander is an understatement.

    ReplyDelete
  146. And for any Lance-worshippers, just kidding. I have no idea if he uses and care even less.

    ReplyDelete
  147. GDGD thinks Scott's still on second base.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Of course, it's Josh Fucking Beckett on the mound. So we cool.

    ReplyDelete
