Red Sox - 000 000 000 000 000 - 0 4 0It's a drag to be on the losing end of any extra-inning game, but this was one of the best games the Red Sox and Yankees have played in the 2000s.
Yankees - 000 000 000 000 002 - 2 9 1
The two rivals had never played 14 innings without a run being scored. Nearly 40 years ago, on September 24, 1969, the two teams were tied 0-0 after 13 innings before the Red Sox won 1-0 in 14.
Junichi Tazawa made his major league debut in the bottom of the 14th. It ended up being one of the more eventful half-innings of the season.
After Hideki Matsui lined out to center, Jorge Posada and Robinson Cano singled. Eric Hinske then ripped a 2-2 pitch to deep right. J.D. Drew got a fantastic jump, ran maybe 10-12 steps and leapt towards the track and corner, the ball just barely nestling in the tip of his glove with his arm at full extension.
Drew: "I don't know how in the world it ended up in my glove."
With two outs, Melky Cabrera lined a full-count pitch down the right field line. It landed perhaps one inch foul; the Dud had started celebrating his game-winning hit on his way to first, before being told to go back to the plate. After another foul, he swung and missed a pitch in the dirt.
In the 15th, Derek Jeter -- who had left the bases loaded in the fifth and stranded the winning run at third in the 10th -- blooped one of his trademark weak singles to right. Victor Martinez, playing first, made a diving catch into foul territory on Johnny Damon's poor bunt attempt and Mark Teixeira struck out. Alex Rodriguez then crushed a 2-1 pitch to deep left-center for a game-winning dong.
Tazawa was squeezed by home plate umpire Chad Fairchild; his first two pitches to Hinske in the 14th were clearly in the strike zone according to MLB's pitch-f/x data, but were called balls.
The pitch before A-Rod hit the homer was also questionable. If called correctly, it would have been a 1-2 count and not 2-1. Takashi Saito also fought against a saltine-sized zone in the 13th, a strike zone that magically expanded back close to rule book size when Alfredo Aceves, Brian Bruney or Phil Coke were on the hill.
Beckett (7-4-0-2-7, 115) was strong and the seven Boston relievers -- Okajima, Bard, Ramirez, Papelbon, Delcarmen, Saito and Tazawa -- had a superb 7.2-4-0-5-7 line before Slappy's HR. It was the first time in MLB history that a team used three Japanese-born pitchers during one game.
The Red Sox had very few scoring chances, collecting only four hits in 55 trips to the plate: Ellsbury in the first and 10th, Ortiz in the ninth, and Youkilis in the 14th. They drew eight walks, including six from Burnett (7.2-1-0-6-6, 118).
Boston had Ellsbury at third with two outs in the first, runners at first and second with no outs in the sixth, a man at second with two outs in both the eighth and 10th, and first and second with two outs in the 14th. In other words, the only Red Sox runner to get to third base all night was the very first batter of the game.
So after 5:33 and 494 pitches, the Red Sox fell to 4.5 GB.Josh Beckett (3.27, 144 ERA+) / A.J. Burnett (3.89, 114 ERA+)
Junichi Tazawa has been called up to the Red Sox. The Globe speculates that Jed Lowrie will be placed on the disabled list to make room for the right-handed pitcher.
In other roster news, Billy Traber was designated for assignment and infielder Chris Woodward was claimed off waivers from the Mariners. ... WEEI is reporting that John Smoltz has left the team and New York and is headed back to Atlanta.
Lineup:
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
Victor Martinez, 1B
Kevin Youkilis, 3B
David Ortiz, DH
J.D. Drew, RF
Jason Varitek, C
Josh Reddick, LF
Nick Green, SS

I agree, if we win this is one of the books.
Hairston PH for Swish
he was already in RF, no ph
oh sorry, i'm useless tonight!
at least my T key is working
no - it's hinske. that is PH
Wow, these fans sound like they were imported from the skydome.
Hinske goes to bat with Bubba O'reilly. Not bad.
hinske hit a bunch of dongs when he 1st came to the yanks. ppl must think he's the 2nd coming of babe.
if they were from skydome, they would be booing him.
don't fuck us, orca.
when i saw him swinging the bats ond eck, i did ask "who is that tub of goo?"
Ofer, NYY fans think of that as Paul O'Neill's AB music.
Did anyone guess 11 innings in the poll Ish was taking?
ok dp pls
DBD, pls
Yes is so obsessed w/ showing past HRs. They always have been.
Uch.
oh boy
Hey A - Apparently YES just said Hinske's recent streak is "Ruthian"
All right, two away, and Jeter in. Remember. Do not make Jeter the hero.
No prob, CI will strand the runner on 3rd.
Uh oh Paps coming in.
Time to be Mr. 30.
CI has made the 3rd out in his last three PA.
Just saw your post about Hinske, L. LOL should've addressed that last one to you.
Anyway internet is being complete shit for some reason.
That "2nd coming of Ruth" comment was mine. :)
I need a drink.
fuck, anyone but Jeter, get him Pap.
Hinske is Ruthian like...
Not sure I can stand to watch him pitch.
I don't give a shit about Jeter. I just want to win this game.
Come on Bot. Be. The. Bot.
[No need to explain the Jeter comments, I GET IT, just don't share it]
One more strike, Pap. Make me look foolish.
YESSSSS!!!!!
SIT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!
SNUFFED!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm starting to breath again.
Sit
SCORE RUNS
Sweet!
Sit DOWN!
What's the most comments so far this season? It seems that recently we have been passing 400 more regularly and now 600. Is this the first 600+ game?
I love it! YES showing JD calmly chewing gum, while Kay is saying "the nerves are palpable on the field".
Oh, yeah, Paps' K was cool, too.
CI:
makes 1st out in 1st
makes 3rd out in 3rd, strands runner at 3B
makes 3rd out in 5th, leaves bases loaded
makes 3rd out in 8th
makes 3rd out in 10th, strands winning run at 3rd

Clutch!
Damn this is sooo intense....
Loving every minute!
CLUTCH there boy.
Sad thing is we probably are more nervous than they are. They make their millions either way. But it's still intense.
G16: 931 (extras vs MFY)
G8: 839 (12 inn OAK)
G60: 741 (vs MFY)
It feels like we blink and have 2 outs.

Oh pls don't bring up their salaries. We should be more nervous than the players. They're doing their jobs, they're professionals. If they were as nervous as us, they'd be little leaguers.
man that was a quick and ugly inning for our hitters
that went by too fast.
Why can't our defensive innings be so uneventful...?
Wow, 916 that early on! Of course, it was a Yankee game.
"blink and you missed it. which in fact you did."
now more nerves as pap tries to be bot again.
3 hits in 11 innings is not good.
I also was thinking that our innings at bat seem so much faster than theirs, but figured it was just because I don't breathe during their at bats.
3 singles too: in the 1st, 9th and 10th.
Luxury seats emptying...
again.
True, L-girl, I wasn't being negative, You're right, It's a good thing they aren't as nervous as we are!
And they deserve their money.
well, it's 0-0
"nothing" has happened.
semms like it is us that are uneffected. game ends, we go to bed, drive home, whatever, either way. their lives change depending on wins and losses (playoffs, etc.).
Super Trupers!
SIT DOWN DOOSHES
Kay was majorly truped there. I wasn't.
Hmm, that got Harv and me agitated.
As I said, fans trucked in from the Skydome with that kind of cheering on routine flies.
do not throw any more meatballs, snuff.
So who pitches the 12th?
i think about these last few innings -- how the hell did we ever make it thru 2004?
i have nesn on again - seems like as the game is tight, DR is much more quiet.
Some of us barely did, Allan. I had to look away during Yankee at bats in the ALCS. I don't think I have ever been so nervous.
Pap, you are rising to the occasion.
BOT!!!! YES!!!
SIT THE FUCK DOWN CHUMP!
Sit, slappy
The Paps of Yore!
Harv going to sleep. I take this as a good omen for us.
Bot is at 16.
I stay with him in the 12th.
(mdc?)
Every time Foulke pitched, I had to leave the room and watch from a distance. I could barely watch.
This game reminds me of 2004. Not as much on the line of course but the intensity with some of these at-bats feels similar. That's why 'm loving it so much :)
Harv going to sleep.
???????????????????
Amy, I get the feeling you are a much more passionate fan than Harvey. Even though he loves his Yankees and is loyal to them, I don't think he has as much invested as you do in the Sox. True or false impression?

BOOZE
drew steps in at 11:11 -- we'll get runs
mdc up
I would switch channels and check back every ten second, counting very slowly.
Ugh, can we PLEASE challenge this Alfredo fucker and not swing at EVERYTHING he throws?!
WTF are you DOING jay-son?
DR: "Red Sox need base runners."
booze, mute, xanax... anything
Probably true, Laura, though he would deny it probably. He likes to say, "It's just baseball," when I get upset about something in a game. I say, "So? It's baseball!"
But he is a loyal fan and would likely be screaming and yelling if with other Yankee fans. But he's with me and doesn't have a blog community to share with!
Harv going to sleep.
please disturb his probably-deserved slumber with your whoops of joy as we win this game.
DR is so smart
2 outs again. every time i look up we have 2 outs.
Tek should be out of the game after this; Lowell to 3rd, Youk to 1st and Martinez to C.
Rudolph or bust.
Red Sox in extras:
10: 1 game
11: 4 games
12: 2 games
13: 2 games
"If you are the Red Sox, you got to find a way to win this game tonight."
In Harvey's defense of going to sleep, he drove 8 hours yesterday, and we did not get home til 1:30. (We went from the Cape to Springfield to Boston back to the Cape.)
But he's not part of a NYY community online. He could be - I'm sure there are some good ones out there that aren't full of yahoos.
but you're still up :)
oh boy here we go again
Another fucking OTT...
Harv sticking around for another half inning. I guess he is fighting to stay awake and watch.
MDC coming in - I'm glad. I don't think we can ask any more of Pap.
Red Sox in extras:
10: 1 game
11: 4 games
12: 2 games
13: 2 games
Which means I've gone to a second scorecard twice this year -- i have room for 12 innings on them -- and used it for only one inning.
That annoys me. I wanna fill it up. So let's go 17, 18, 19 tonight.
this is crazy nerve wracking
I guess he is fighting to stay awake and watch
Put the kettle on!
I am NOT rooting for Allan's scorecard challenge. I have been up since 6:30 and I have work tomorrow.
Nazi Bruney up
Harvey has no interest in game threading. He thought it was odd when I started. Now that he has met many of you, he gets it better. And he really liked everyone he met. But talking to "strangers" in cyberspace is not his thing.
longest 0-0 extra inning game btn sox & nyy since 1969
And of those extra inning games, how many have we WON?
Isn't that as important...more important...than the scorecards? :)
Does he read blogs or forums or anything like that?
mdc liked curly better.
I'm a little late on this, but where's jere?
I'm loving being able to read a thread live for the first time in ages. West Coast time plus an hour commute at a new job means the games are almost always over before I get home. Thanks gang!
different kind of importance :)
sox 4-5 in extras
No, Laura, he reads the various newspapers on line, but as far as I know, that's it.
September 24, 1969: Red Sox 1, Yankees 0 (14)
Sox also played 20 against the pilots that year.
Get a DP, and get out of there.
Passaballa= hopefully an easy DP.
yooooooooooook
YOUK!
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK
Youk coming on from Jersey City..
more spazzy clapping over here.
Nick, Jere watches games w/o computer now. He hasn't been on threads in a long time.

EERGGGH. Throw strikes.

that's ok, you can't be expected to know all these things.

like that! THANK YOU
Who now after MDC?
lucky 13.
Lucky 13 coming up.
GOT TO LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUV THE DUD!!!!!!!!!!!
That's better.
Now, can we PLEASE score some runs?
I mean Awesome MDC!:)
omg i gotta go take care of the dogs! poor girls, it's late. brb.
Whooaa, Nick, we are channeling each other.
Or just being obvious!
Tazawa is gonna have one hell of an MLB debut in the 15th...
six foot girl gonna

stand close to the fire
when they light the pig
standing in her chinos shirt pulled off clean

Great, now we will have to bring out Saito, The rookie Tazawa is a starter.
that whole great minds things. Only option.
Sure, Nick, you knew I wasn't going to know those lyrics, right?
SCORE RUNS.
Hmm, DO also just said lucky 13.
Now I really feel unoriginal.
TWO DOWN ALREADY???
For fuck sakes, can we see some goddamn pitches
it's a pretty swell song by a swell band from boston. the pixies.
WHAT THE FUCK! seriously can we have a half inning that lasts more than 3 minutes. runs dammit!
Tazawa is gonna have one hell of an MLB debut in the 15th...

Laura will come back from letting out the dogs without seeing one of our batters.
Come on FY

Maybe it's JtC's brother....Boba Chamberlain...partner in crime with his mom...
NOT saito!
Saito coming on..
oh shit - here comes saito.
Well it's been fun while it's lasted.
Well, who did we have other than Saito?
Earlier I said to my sister, "If Saito comes in, it means the Red Sox bats have run out of time."
"oh shit - here comes saito."
He has a 3.23 ERA
2.16 since the All-Star break
I like our odds
War of attrition here. Who do they have left, IF we get through this half inning?
I'm going offline for the day. 16 hours at the computer is enough for one day. I'll watch the game til the end, tho, of course.
GO SOX
and
good night!
I like Kevin's attitude.
Tazawa up.
(Amy: I had the TV on downstairs, didn't miss a batter - but they did go awfully quickly...)
Tazawa warming up if there is a 15th.
Good night, Laura. I am giving the computer til midnight, and my eyes til they close and I cannot open them.

the was was wicked bad but then dude pairs it with a starchy matching dress shirt and a tie.
wish i could watch, but i got tomorrow and sunday
saito getting squeezed
fuckin gift BB to fuckface
I've always thought the strike zone is smaller for Japanese pitchers.
I don't know what it is but I've seen the Japanese guys getting squeezed before. Especially Jeemer. Dice-K frequently. Other guys around the league.
damn - even roberts is bitching about the ump squeezing saito
We made it through a Saito inning.
Can we please score a run? I don't think my eyes will make it through another inning.
saito should tell the ump to suck his ass on the way off the field.
Phew now score please!
longest game of the year!!!
Alright, score some runs, get Saito the win, and then Tazawa can get his first MLB save.
"wait, one more comment.
