Red Sox - 000 000 000 000 000 - 0 4 0It's a drag to be on the losing end of any extra-inning game, but this was one of the best games the Red Sox and Yankees have played in the 2000s.
Yankees - 000 000 000 000 002 - 2 9 1
The two rivals had never played 14 innings without a run being scored. Nearly 40 years ago, on September 24, 1969, the two teams were tied 0-0 after 13 innings before the Red Sox won 1-0 in 14.
Junichi Tazawa made his major league debut in the bottom of the 14th. It ended up being one of the more eventful half-innings of the season.
After Hideki Matsui lined out to center, Jorge Posada and Robinson Cano singled. Eric Hinske then ripped a 2-2 pitch to deep right. J.D. Drew got a fantastic jump, ran maybe 10-12 steps and leapt towards the track and corner, the ball just barely nestling in the tip of his glove with his arm at full extension.
Drew: "I don't know how in the world it ended up in my glove."
With two outs, Melky Cabrera lined a full-count pitch down the right field line. It landed perhaps one inch foul; the Dud had started celebrating his game-winning hit on his way to first, before being told to go back to the plate. After another foul, he swung and missed a pitch in the dirt.
In the 15th, Derek Jeter -- who had left the bases loaded in the fifth and stranded the winning run at third in the 10th -- blooped one of his trademark weak singles to right. Victor Martinez, playing first, made a diving catch into foul territory on Johnny Damon's poor bunt attempt and Mark Teixeira struck out. Alex Rodriguez then crushed a 2-1 pitch to deep left-center for a game-winning dong.
Tazawa was squeezed by home plate umpire Chad Fairchild; his first two pitches to Hinske in the 14th were clearly in the strike zone according to MLB's pitch-f/x data, but were called balls.
The pitch before A-Rod hit the homer was also questionable. If called correctly, it would have been a 1-2 count and not 2-1. Takashi Saito also fought against a saltine-sized zone in the 13th, a strike zone that magically expanded back close to rule book size when Alfredo Aceves, Brian Bruney or Phil Coke were on the hill.
Beckett (7-4-0-2-7, 115) was strong and the seven Boston relievers -- Okajima, Bard, Ramirez, Papelbon, Delcarmen, Saito and Tazawa -- had a superb 7.2-4-0-5-7 line before Slappy's HR. It was the first time in MLB history that a team used three Japanese-born pitchers during one game.
The Red Sox had very few scoring chances, collecting only four hits in 55 trips to the plate: Ellsbury in the first and 10th, Ortiz in the ninth, and Youkilis in the 14th. They drew eight walks, including six from Burnett (7.2-1-0-6-6, 118).
Boston had Ellsbury at third with two outs in the first, runners at first and second with no outs in the sixth, a man at second with two outs in both the eighth and 10th, and first and second with two outs in the 14th. In other words, the only Red Sox runner to get to third base all night was the very first batter of the game.
So after 5:33 and 494 pitches, the Red Sox fell to 4.5 GB.Josh Beckett (3.27, 144 ERA+) / A.J. Burnett (3.89, 114 ERA+)
Junichi Tazawa has been called up to the Red Sox. The Globe speculates that Jed Lowrie will be placed on the disabled list to make room for the right-handed pitcher.
In other roster news, Billy Traber was designated for assignment and infielder Chris Woodward was claimed off waivers from the Mariners. ... WEEI is reporting that John Smoltz has left the team and New York and is headed back to Atlanta.
Lineup:
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
Victor Martinez, 1B
Kevin Youkilis, 3B
David Ortiz, DH
J.D. Drew, RF
Jason Varitek, C
Josh Reddick, LF
Nick Green, SS

ReplyDeletewhere are those words from?
ReplyDelete"Black Books," a hilarious, short-lived comedy starring Irish comic Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey (pictured above).
ReplyDeleteThe 1st few episodes are some of the funniest I've ever seen. I believe whole episodes are available online. I'm sure people will post links shortly...
awesome. thanks for the quick answer!
ReplyDeletei love this part:

The delivery is hilarious. He rushes into the bookstore in a state of abject panic - LITTLE BOOK OF CALM LITTLE BOOK OF CALM !!!! - then through this weird flukey thing in his workplace, ends up swallowing it and choking. It cannot be dislodged, but he ends up incredibly calm, in a kind of glowing, Jesus-like state.
ReplyDeleteThe two epidsodes to search for on YouTube are called "Cooking the Books" and "The Grapes of Wrath". Must see.
If you don't know Dylan Moran, you may recognize him from Shaun of the Dead and Run, Fat Boy, Run. Simon Pegg has a cameo in a Black Books ep too.
I left last night's gamethread in the 7th inning, so I just went back and scrolled through what I missed.
ReplyDeleteSomeone said if this game had been in 2004 or 2007 it would be different. I had to chuckle over that.
I'm not picking on the commenter, not at all. I just remember SO clearly how incredibly frustrating 2004 was, and how it grim things looked through much of that summer. Not to mention a certain three games in October! We were all still hurting from 2003, and it often looked like 2004 would be even worse.
I don't know what will happen this season. I don't know if we will win the division, win the wild card or stay home. And anyone who tells you he knows is lying. None of us know.
That's the point. None of us know the future.
Our team has problems. The 2009 Red Sox are not perfect. Show me a team that has no holes and is perfect. You can't, because there are none.
And teams that appear to be nearly perfect don't necessarily make it to the WS and don't necessarily win it if they do.
We are still in a pennant race. The team still has a lot going for it. And our competition is far from perfect, too. If we get hot while they fall into an extended slump, the standings will improve. If not... we keep watching, and keep believing.
I didn't mean this comment to turn into a pep talk. I guess I just can't help myself!
Alex Rios was put on waivers and was claimed by a team. Interesting to see how that comes along.
ReplyDeleteIt honestly wouldn't surprise me if it was Boston.
Gregg Zaun is like the village bicycle in the AL East. He's played for Toronto, Baltimore, and has now been acquired by the Rays!
ReplyDeleteAlso Minnesota acquired Carl Pavano.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Junichi Tazawa will be the newest pitcher added to the Red Sox. He's in the clubhouse in New York today.
ReplyDeleteChris Woodward was claimed off waivers from Seattle. Traber DFA'd.
WEEI.com says Tazawa has now been activated.
ReplyDeleteWoodward has been activated but no corresponding move has been made yet.

Do you believe for the first time in his tenure , Theo is freakin' out?
Nick Cafardo made a great point in pregame last night , how the Kotchman deal made no sense, if you were going to get rid of Laroche and you already had 2 first baseman ,w/Yook and Martinez, why bottle up the bench with such a non-versatile player in Kotchman..And then begs the question why did you let Kotsay go in the first place? How many teams carry 4 firstbasemen? I realize Papi doesn't play there a lot, but still we have 4 1b's.
Just win this one game, that's all. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteWEEI is reporting that John Smoltz has left the team and New York and is headed back to Atlanta.
ReplyDeleteI had enough of watching him sulk in the dugout.
9casey,
ReplyDeleteKotchman is cheaper than LaRoche, a better defender and the Sox will have him for several cost-controlled years unlike LaRoche who was a FA after this year and over-paid to be a bench player. That wasn't a bad pickup at all.
Picking up Rios with his salary on the other hand really makes no sense for the Red Sox though unless the Bay injury is a lot worse than they're letting on (and even then I'd rather they give Reddick a shot).
The Jays would love to dump Rios' contract because he will be making way too much money for the production he provides but I'm 99% sure it is NOT the Red Sox who claimed him.
The Tazawa/Soltz combination of news is REALLY great! I hope they give Tazawa Smoltz' 5th starter job. He has really looked impressive in the minors.

Is there a money issue with the Red Sox? Is Kotchman the 1b of the future? We still have Martinez and Tek next year. You can't ask me to think about next year or the future when I have my sights set on 7:05, and the foreseeable future (11:05)...
It's amazing how valueable Wake becomes when you don't have him...

So did Laptop...I don't mean to be pissing on your parade, but I don't have much faith in how good guys looked in Portland....
YES - I am back!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteTazawa pitched five days ago (his second AAA start); his turn to pitch is Saturday. Maybe he'll back up HH.
ReplyDeleteA bad start or two has not shaken my faith that Buchholz has a good future with this club and I hope the same for Tazawa. You have to be patient with young pitching. I'd much rather watch young pitchers struggle than old pitchers struggle. With a young pitcher there's a good chance they will get better. Smoltz and Penny, on the other hand, are very unlikely to improve.
ReplyDelete"
Is there a money issue with the Red Sox?"
Not really but I don't think the Sox want to pay 7.5 million for a backup 1st baseman who may get 50 at-bats the rest of the season when a guy like Kotchman basically can do the same job a lot cheaper.
And unless you want Rios as a starting outfielder (which I don't), paying him $12 million over the next few seasons makes no sense at all.
And we have 4 1B
ReplyDeleteBecause we also have:
-A 38 year old catcher who can no longer throw well nor hit particularly well and probably would be slowly phased out except for a rabid segment of the fan base who is convinced that he has some intangible quality that makes the pitching staff better.
-Two DHes one of whom has to play 3B (sorry but look at Lowell's recent fielding ratings]
-A 1B who would make a decent 3B if the rules allowed you to have 2 DHes in the lineup.
Sorry if that came off as negative. I didn't mean it that way. This is just a very "interesting" team to say the least.
The Tazawa/Soltz combination of news is REALLY great! I hope they give Tazawa Smoltz' 5th starter job. He has really looked impressive in the minors.
ReplyDeleteMost of that only in double A. But I'll take him.
Interesting it's not Bowden, though.
Extra Bases says it wasn't us that claimed Rios, and that Papi will speak at 12:30 (tomorrow, I suppose).
We do NOT need Alex Rios.
ReplyDeleteBuffy must be heartbroken.
"I'm not picking on the commenter, not at all. I just remember SO clearly how incredibly frustrating 2004 was, and how it grim things looked through much of that summer."
ReplyDelete'Sokay--you can pick on him. I pick on him all the time. LOL. I just think he was really too young to understand the nail biting and the potential for heartbreak that lurked behind every pitch and every at bat. Ahh, the innocence of youth. :)
Exactly five years ago -- to the day! -- I blogged this:
ReplyDeleteThe Most Frustrating Red Sox Season Ever?
The posters at Sons of Sam Horn discuss. And there are tons of good points, for both sides, as well as some analysis of the Yankees' performance. One poster thinks the 2004 Yankees are like the 2003 Red Sox in their almost-nightly ability to rally when behind. ... By contrast, the Red Sox seem dead if they lose a lead or are trailing after the 6th inning. Most of the same players from 2003 are still here, so I don't really understand the difference.
If 2004 is the most frustrating season (I'm not convinced (yet)), it's because of pre-season expectations. We saw management remove the one and only reason Boston failed to go to the World Series and they added Schilling and Foulke. We all agreed: This was the most-talented Red Sox team of our lifetimes.
I'll support this team until the very end of the season -- whichever day in October that may be -- and I'll watch every pitch of every game that I can, but this summer hasn't been a whole lot of fun. I've said this before -- even the victories have left me pissed off. Last year, I felt good even after a loss.

I hate it, really I do, but I think it's Old Yeller time for Smoltz. Just glad someone else gets to do it. Well, at least someone else gets the opportunity to. I guess it may turn out to be us that fired the final shot after all.
This reminds me of Amy's first comment re "First Thing's First"

ReplyDeleteIt's not the institution's place to...

ReplyDeleteYES in rare form thus far. About 7/10 on the rage scale thus far. They make the weather report annoying.
ReplyDeleteBilly Martin, now there was a borderline, and an alcoholic too.
ReplyDeleteStevie Wonder-esque at bat.
ReplyDeleteNothing grammatically wrong with it.
ReplyDeleteWhat does your insect typewriter say?
The TV stream I get is sometimes half an inning behind the actual game but what the hell I will give it a try, at least it will cut out DR's idiocy
ReplyDeleteBut what's the rest of the sentence, ofer?--it's so far setting up to be a bit pompous though without full context, it's hard to say.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah Irid, I remember your very delayed comments last night! Forgot about that. Mine is only a slight delay by comparison.
ReplyDeleteStill, I would go for just radio if I had to. I mean, come on. Michael Kay.
Is Dave Roberts not a popular commentator?
ReplyDeleteI confess, my recording device last night must have known what was coming as it decided not to record the game, so missed it (and had no desire to watch it - we did, I know, get NESN's feed). Is he that bad?
What does your insect typewriter say?
ReplyDeleteThe same thing it always says: "rub that yellow powder on my lips"
It's not pompous, Ofer. I assume it's a business letter.
ReplyDeleteSecond mention of Babe Ruth.
ReplyDeleteFirst mention of Bucky Dent.
Stunning.
Everyone wants to meet Babe Ruth. That's what they said. Do they know he's dead?
But what's the rest of the sentence, ofer?--it's so far setting up to be a bit pompous though without full context, it's hard to say.
ReplyDeleteSince you asked: the university is a civil institution, and as such it is not its place to give rewards for military activity.
Is he that bad?
ReplyDeleteI don't think he's nearly as bad as this crew makes him out to be. He's not good - he doesn't bring anything interesting to the broadcast. But he's innocuous enough. He's just there.
But that is NOT a popular opinion around here.

ReplyDeleteGood sentence.
ReplyDelete"on my lips..." Shuddersome, isn't it?
Sounds fine, ofer. Didn't mean to be negative, but the writing prof wants his context.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the content too.
normally I'm in the "kind of dumb commentary but innocuous" camp with DR but he is so complimentary of every opposing player so when we're playing the MFY that grates on my nerves a lot
ReplyDelete"on my lips..." Shuddersome, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. Especially with the visual added. No offense to dear ol' Clark Nova, but it literally speaks out of its ass.
(BTW, do you remember the monologue about the man who learned to speak out of his ass? Best part of the movie and the book, imho).
roberts is like a high school kid who is trying to bullshit his way through an exam he has no clue about.
ReplyDeleteafter we see a play and don calls it, roberts then repeats what don just said in slightly different language, describes what we saw, saying nothing more insightful than "single to right field" and then wraps up by repeating his beginning again.
every freaking time. it is painful to listen to. he has actually gotten worse since he began.
and if you listen for how many times he says "you know", you will go insane.
Thanks on the grammar tips, all. I usually go by ear, but you want an official letter to come out right.

For the TV deprived (like me)
ReplyDeletethe monologue about the man who learned to speak out of his ass
ReplyDeleteIn the film, very non sequitur, but comes across as some of the most Beat-esque dialog in it. His asshole eventually takes over and devours him. Little hard to imagine, but the monologue makes it seem oddly possible.
All hear this:
The Fuck Train has left the station. Two perfect (at least no hits, no walks) innings is what we agreed on.

oh ok I get Singleton and Kay mixed up. They are both so horrible
ReplyDeleteSterling and Kay I meant

ReplyDeleteDorky southern accent? Who's that?
Hi, all. Just finishing dinner and catching up on the game and the thread. Be back soon.

ReplyDeleteSterling is on radio.
They used to do radio together, but that was several years ago.
Come on, Beckett, get back into your grove. . .
ReplyDeleteAre you asking who is doing the YES broadcast? I can turn the sound on and tell you. Hold on.
ReplyDeletegroove.
ReplyDeleteA grove would be weird. I mean, trees do not grow on the pitcher's mound.
YES broadcast is Kay, Singleton and Paul O'Neill. That's not a southern accent.
ReplyDeletePO'N used to be pretty good on the air. I haven't heard him in years tho. But that's who you're hearing tonight.
ReplyDeletejosh, it's nick swisher, for fuck's sake.
ReplyDeleteNed had his Shakespeare quotations he liked to work in. Last night, he would surely have said troubles come not as single spies but in battalions. At some point he might have ejaculated, "Mercy!"
ReplyDeletedunno sounds southern to me...definitely dorky (imo)
ReplyDeleteO'Brien trots out the "mercy!" every once in a while as tribute to Ned Martin.
ReplyDeleteHe grew up in Cinncinnati. That's the kind of accent he has.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I wonder about my Ned martin/Jim Woods memories. I need some tapes or CDs of them calling games.
ReplyDeleteGood:
McDonough/Remy
Orsillo/Remy (usually)
Edes was great
Kaat sounded good
I'd rather the TV booth justbe one guy, I think. And if NESN likes Don, I'd be happy with him solo.
niice turn
ReplyDeletenice dp!
ReplyDeleteYeah now I remember...Michael Kay, they guy who compared dumb superstitions about no-hitters to the Holocaust :)
ReplyDeleteBlessed DP!
ReplyDeleteOK, I think I can focus now. Get Jeter out.
ReplyDelete... and slavery, if I recall.
ReplyDeleteHiya Amy!
ReplyDeleteHe's completely insane.
ReplyDeleteHe used to be good, believe it or not. Sterling used to be good! They were a good team. Then they both lost their minds, although in different ways.
Kay audio
ReplyDeleteFJM:
Apparently, Kay began his show by saying, "On this day, August 4th, 2006, I declare the Red Sox officially dead." He then began getting angry calls and e-mails from Yankee fans who thought he was jinxing the team -- especially since he "jinxed" Chien-Ming Wang's perfect game in the 6th inning earlier this year by announcing that it was happening.
During one of these calls, captured in the clip below, Michael Kay goes batshit crazy and starts talking about slaves and Nazis "putting people into ovens."

Ned and Jim were perfect. They did a rain delay once my wife and I still talk about--so funny, so casual, so digressive in a baseball way.

ReplyDeleteI don't know if I agree with that. I think it's a great movie, but I don't know if I even consider it as an adaptation of the book. I'd say Cronenberg wrote an original movie that was influenced by Naked Lunch.
Perfect in the sense of subject to the same human imperfections as all of us but talented, professional, respectful to the audience, knowledgeable, human, sensible. That kind of perfect.

ReplyDeleteYou heard it here folks!
And Sterling was even better in the 80s and early 90s when the Yankees sucked.
that's kind of what I mean, Conformer. I'm not sure how one would bring an actual adaptation of the book to the screen successfully. That's why I like Cronenberg's approach and I think he pulled it off rather nicely. It's a very literary high.
ReplyDeleteYouk walks on the 2-3 pitch.

ReplyDeleteMy fundamental problem with crash was not about the adaptation, but the emotional temperature.
ReplyDelete[fuck the DP!!]
The book was warm/hot. great erotic descriptions of the melding of flesh and metal, of the heat, the emotion. I found the movie to be cold/sterile.
18 straight outs for Ortiz?

Those annoying numbers again, 4-6-3.
ReplyDeleteOrtiz must be feeling hellish, what with one thing and another.

ReplyDeleteI love Beckett.
I hope Buchholz is watching Beckett and taking notes on his ... laptop.
ReplyDeleteDear Red Sox Hitters,
ReplyDeletePlease do your jobs. Josh cannot win this game all by himself.
Thanking you in advance,
Joy Nation
Pretty snappy.
ReplyDeleteHave a great trip, LJ! I hope you get some great shots on that camera during your trip. Those photos were amazing.

ReplyDeleteJust write down "Papi stinks"
ReplyDeleteNick, I'm with ya on Crash. Not a big fan. Although I do think he made it very cold and dejected on purpose. Haven't read the book. Who wrote it? Is it good?
ReplyDeleteExistenz is lots of fun, and has some philosophy sprinkled onto it, too.
If it was the NL he could hit a homer and shut 'em out 1-0 didn't CC or someone do that last year?
ReplyDeleteI guess Rios sucks because Toronto fans just aren't cool and exciting enough (according to O'Neil) ugh
ReplyDeleteJG Ballard. I read one of his books and was not impressed, but keep hearing these good things about him, so will have to try another.
ReplyDeleteI was over the moon when I heard about Existenz, wasn't too thrilled when I saw, but...watched it again and was more into it. You almost have to have played computer games to get some of it, I think.
I'm off to meet friends before the Giants game. Will try to pick up the Sox game in a bar somewhere.
ReplyDeletefuck. that pitch seemed low. or not. but still fuck.
ReplyDeletei thought low also.
