An early version of the 2010 schedule has the Red Sox opening the season at Fenway Park against the Yankees. Sean McAdam has the scoop on the tentative schedule. The Red Sox opened the 1992 and 2005 seasons in New York.
Red Sox pitchers struck out 17 Toronto batters last night: Beckett 9, Saito 2, Bard 3, Papelbon 3. It was most in a game since April 8, 2001 against the Devil Rays: Pedro 16, Lowe 1.
Daisuke Matsuzaka's rehab start for Portland was pushed back to Sunday; he's still on schedule to face the Orioles at Fenway on September 9. ... Jed Lowrie rejoins Pawtucket today. ... George Kottaras will be back with the Red Sox on Tuesday in Tampa Bay.
Two articles on Jason Varitek blocking the plate on Travis Snider. It was a very nice play -- and it kept the game tied -- but the praise seems a bit much. ... Terry Francona says Billy Wagner will not pitch on consecutive days: "That's for sure."
Donkey Watch: Justin Masterson has made four starts for Cleveland (and one relief appearance). In those starts, he has allowed 20 hits and 12 walks in only 19.2 innings.
I think the praise is very deserved. That's a game changer. I've seen a lot of diving catches and slamming into walls; but I can't think of many times I've seen anyone block the plate that well.
ReplyDeleteSlim pickin's to praise Tek these days, so when he does something good, the media gushes on cue.

ReplyDeleteIs there a reverse "why can't we get pitchers like that"?
After he acknowledged me in
ReplyDeleteanaheim I am saddened by Masterson's recent performance.

ReplyDeleteIt is just as important preventing runs as it is creating them..
I didn't see the media gushing on him , I saw his manager and fellow players in the postgame gushing on him....the only media I get these about the Red Sox is right here and what I see on NESN...
With the millionaire parade last night during the game and the millionaires on the field and the millionaires in attendance...............How in God's name does the Jimmy Fund Telethon come in 500,000 dollars short.....Ben , Dane, John Henry , Tom Werner...guys I know you do alot for the Jimmy Fund allready , but you cant get together at 5 to 12 and say hey lets make this happen...
ReplyDeleteIt was Bard's quotes I was thinking of:
ReplyDelete"He's a warrior, man. He's intimidating when you see him walking out in his full gear ..."
The play saved Bard from allowing the go-ahead run, so I know he's excited about it, but (a) it's Tek's job and (b) is he that much more intimidating than any another catcher in gear?
I mean, Dumbo would run the other way to avoid a collision, but ...
... maybe I'm just grumpy.

ReplyDeleteWhy can't we trade pitchers like that?
?

ReplyDeleteA source tells me that at least 200 people called back and withdrew their donations after hearing Dane Cook blather on and on.
It was a nice play, but yes, overblown. Tek did what a catcher is suppose to do. But if the runner slides in any of 20 other ways, he scores and we're not talking about this play.
ReplyDeleteBut tek probably needs a day in the sun.
It was a good block, and if 'Tek gets some good press, then good on him.
