G140: Rays at Red Sox, PPD

Rays -
Red Sox -
9:45 PM: Tonight's game has been postponed and will be played at noon on Sunday. What happened tonight will be erased from the books. But here it is:
Bartlett (csbbbf) line drive single to left. Crawford (bcb) ground ball single into center, Bartlett to second. Longorias (cbcbfbff) fly out to Ellsbury in left-center. Zobrist (cb) dribbler down third base line for a single, Lowell had no play, bases loaded. Burrell (b - TARP
7:29 PM: Rain delay after only 13 minutes of play. Very smart to begin this one. Tampa has the bases loaded with one out -- Bartlett single to left, Crawford single to center, Longoria F8, Zobrist infield single to third -- and a 1-0 count on Pat Burrell. Lester has thrown 24 pitches.

Example
James Shields (4.02, 113 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.44, 138 ERA+)

Many thanks to Ish for his hosting of threads in my absence.

So with 23 games to play:
AL East
9 GB, MFY Magic #: 14

Wild Card
2 GA, Red Sox Magic #: 22
BP has the odds of the Yankees winning the East at 99.66%. They will forever own the biggest choke in playoff history -- why not tack on some regular season ignominy, too?

Starting .... now!

Orioles/Yankees at 7 and Mariners/Rangers at 8.
Example
Today in Baseball History

1907 - White Sox Doc White's AL record of 65.1 innings pitched without issuing a walk ends.

1912 - Eddie Collins steals six bases as Philadelphia A's beat the Tigers 9-7. Collins will steal six bases again on September 22.

1918 - The Red Sox beat the Cubs 2-1 at Fenway park, winning the World Series in six games.

1964 - Angels reliever Bob Lee fractures his right hand punching a heckling sailor in Boston.

1974 - The Mets lose to the Cardinals 4-3 in 25 innings at Shea Stadium. The Mets' 103 plate appearances is the only time a team has ever topped 100 PA in one game (the Cards had 99). The game ends at 3:13 AM.

1995 - The Yankees record no assists in a 4-0 win in Cleveland. It's the third no-assist game in AL history, and the fourth overall.

2001 - Former minor league players Marty Boryczewski (Cantor Fitzgerald/WTC 1) and Brent Woodall (Keefe, Bruyette & Woods/WTC 2) are killed in the terrorist attacks.
Example
On my to-read list: The Ground Truth by John Farmer, Senior Counsel to the 9/11 Commission.

Farmer:
I was shocked at how different the truth was from the way it was described. ... The [NORAD air defense] tapes told a radically different story from what had been told to us and the public ... [A]t some level of the government ... there was an agreement not to tell the truth about what happened.
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the publisher, states: "Farmer builds the inescapably convincing case that the official version [is] almost entirely untrue ..."

However, it is also important to realize that there is no "official story" of what happened eight years ago. For example, NORAD has given at least seven different versions of the military's response before and during the hijackings.

Any actual investigation of 9/11 would be the first, but most people -- despite the "Never Forget!" bumper stickers -- no longer care (or never cared in the first place), considering how stories like this are published with some frequency and immediately ignored.

Please spend some time with the Complete 9/11 Timeline at the amazing History Commons website.

  1. I will miss this game and likely all the games this weekend as we will be in Boston for a family bat mitzvah tonight through Sunday.

So the light is beginning to spread, huh, Allan? About time....

  2. Thanks for the 9/11 post, A. I decided to be silent on it this year. I've had posts of remembrances (my own and other New Yorkers, like Art Speigelman), anti-war posts, pro-truth posts. I feel like I've said all I have to say on 9/11 - especially given that in Iraq and Afghanistan, 9/11 is still taking place on a daily basis.

  3. But I will use this post as an excuse to plug Spiegelman's "In The Shadow of No Towers". It is a masterpiece - visually rich, emotionally intense, funny and very moving.

And apologies to the great Mr Spiegelman for misspelling his name in my earlier comment.

Spiegelman on Wikipedia includes the famous 9/11 New Yorker cover.

  7. SIRIUS XM Mad Dog Radio host Gary Williams spoke with Matt Damon (some audio):

Williams: Meanwhile, your Red Sox, they're only about 19 games back of the Yankees. Do they have anything for them in October?

Damon: Yeah, of course, man. October comes and everybody is 0-0. All we need to do is back into the wild card and we're fine. We're fine. Listen, New York, they're going to collapse. They're still, I mean, nobody on that team has won a World Series in ... I mean, Jeter has but the rest of them ...

Williams: Posada has, Pettitte has ...

Damon: Nine years ago these guys won the World Series. They got so smoked by the Red Sox in '04, I mean, I'm telling you, man. They've got the yips. They're going to fold like a cheap suit. You watch, man. You watch. If we make it into the playoffs, man, we're taking them down.

  19. Hilarious.

Masterson's going against Greincke today. Had a rough first inning, but no runs came in.

Kind of interesting -- he's given up a lot more walks since being traded, but BAA is about the same and his ERA (4.16) is significantly lower than in Boston for this year (4.50).

  20. L-Girl, are you asking or don't you know? I sidetracked towards the beginning of Allan's book. I'm eager to get back to it...is the answer in there?

My movie quote is Frank (Dennis Hopper) from Blue Velvet.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't remember who said it.

I knew it was Blue Velvet. However, I'm one of the only people you'll meet who dislikes that movie.

(they are also in a reign delay)

  25. I could imagine a lot of people disliking that movie!

I can see that. It's just that everyone I know looooved it. I didn't think it was a bad movie, but Hopper's dreadful performance ruined it for me.

I got some bad news for you ...

  38. On a little side note... I find it interesting that today was declared a national day of service, so we'll all feel better about ourselves and make ourselves.

Wouldn't it be a better idea, for service's sake, if each month there was one day of service? Instead of, you know, once a year?

  40. Why Reading Globe Blog Comments Is A Complete And Total Waste Of Time #273 (my emphasis):

"Why is Ortiz still in the line up and batting 5th at that. I think the Red Sox manager is the worst in baseball. He has made too many mistakes and is far too close to the players that he does not want to hurt there feelings. He needs to go for them to win."

Yeah, the manager of the only two Red Sox World Series titles in the last 91 years must be fired if the team is going "to win".

    ReplyDelete
  41. See, B.R. should comment in the Globe blog.

The Red Sox and Rays will proceed no further and will be made up Sunday at noon, and the 1:35 game already scheduled for that day will be played at 5 p.m. When this game resumes, it will restart from the beginning, NOT with the bases loaded and one out.

"On the radio broadcast, as play was suspended Joe C said Lester went over to 1rst base umpire Randy Marsh crew, chief and was visibly upset, flipping the ball away and barking at Marsh.
So while I also thought it was the Red Sox decision if the game was to start or not I think you nailed it. It was the umps call.
We may see something in the papers or hear the explanation on NESN.

  57. Official rules dictate that this will be the 5pm game, and the regularly scheduled game on Sunday will be the early start.

At least, thats how I read it last year and thats how it went down on the final weekend of the year vs. MFY.

I was confused because I always read it as you posted..."this game will be part 1 of a day night doubleheader" or whatever....but apparently that's not how it goes down for ticketholders. Cause that would've been great for me. But instead I got stuck going to game 162, at 8pm instead of the 1pmer....

ahh well, too much of the bitters (Campari) has made me bitter. time for some sweet sweet shisha and movie night.

The make-up means I MIGHT get to see a game this weekend. ( well, if you call GDGD seeing)
CD release party for my friends tomorrow night. Playing youngster again, with the late start.
And my friend Dora's water heater went bad Wed. so I'm going to try and replace it tomorrow morning. This means all that was supposed to go on tomorrow will get moved to Sunday. Tis worth it though, she's a great person.
    See ya Sunday evening

  61. Interesting fact -
The MFY have just been offially blown out by the Orioles (score 10-4)
I went back to Ish's blog to check out a post from our friend BR, which I was going to copy here. The post said something to the effect of "so what, you beat the O's. ANYONE can beat the O's, they're horrible" I say "something to the effect of" because I can't copy them exactly. Oddly enough, all of his comments are gone. Now perhaps Ish removed them, but since he allowed them in to begin with, I have to believe our buddy decided they could be embarrassing and deleted them himself.
    Maybe. Maybe not.
Either way I find it amusing that he states no one should ever lose to the O's, and then the Skankies get manhandled by them

    ReplyDelete
  62. SoSock, I believe Ish deleted BR's comments.
