Red Sox Decline Option On Varitek

UPPER-DATE: Peter Abraham, Globe:
Just spoke to Theo Epstein [late Monday night]. Contrary to a report, Jason Varitek has not yet exercised his $3 million player option for 2010. ... To be sure, the Sox expect Varitek to trigger that option. But it hasn't happened yet.

The move is expected to be formalized on Tuesday ... With the incentives, Varitek would earn an additional $400,000 for starting 80 games in 2010 and another bonus for every 10 starts thereafter.

    If he does take the option, wouldn't have been better for him to come out and say that rather than have them make the first move...It just seems better from a PR standpoint..

    and to the other post , Tim Wakefield is the biggest bargain for a veteran player .EVER........

    no surprise and it's the right thing to do, definitely. Still, it leaves me a bit melancholy. But there is no room for sentimentality in professional sports. Not if we're going to win and destroy the MFY next year, dagnabit!

    ... and just as I post that, the announcement comes that Tek will exercise the option. Well, who wouldn't want $3 million to sit on the bench versus nothing to stay home?

    Theo states that VMart will be the everyday catcher next season. Think the team is sending a clear message on this one?

    Theo should be committed to an asylum if he said anything else. I think even Tek knows that at this point.

    As Epstein correctly pointed out, Scott Boras usually pushes such decisions until the deadline.

    To be sure, the Sox expect Varitek to trigger that option. But it hasn't happened yet.

    I know the Red Sox are talking about resigning Alex Gonzalez at ss for around 3 mil, but would would you rather give 3 mil to , him or Orlando Cabrera?

    I'd Rather have .280 , 9 and 75 then, .250, 5 and 50 .......

    I have a soft spot for OCab, but Seabass won me over this fall, so I'd be content with either at this point. Do we rule out Lowrie for every day?

    They'd like Lowrie in there every day, but considering the questions about his wrist, they clearly need a Plan B that might end up being Plan A.
