The proposed trade between the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox involving Mike Lowell is off, according to a source. The article states that Lowell injured the thumb taking batting practice during the final weekend of the 2009 season.
The reason: Lowell has a torn radial collateral ligament in his right thumb and will have surgery after Christmas.
Recovery time from the surgery is 6-8 weeks, which might make him a bit late for spring training.
Wonderful we will be stuck with him.
ReplyDeleteAnd where will we put him?
ReplyDeleteI like him a lot and was sad to see him going, but even so, I know he is a liability at third base. First base?
Just because this trade was called off doesn't mean he'll play for the Sox next season.
ReplyDeleteTrue, but who else will take him? And won't the Sox still have to pay him if no one else does?
ReplyDeleteIf his thumb is what had the deal called off, it follows that his hip has improved, as the Rangers were planning to give him some time at 1st and 3rd and the hip didn't fail.
ReplyDeleteWhy did the Red Sox think Lowell would pass a physical? If he and the team knew about the torn ligament, shouldn't the surgery have been done two months ago?

ReplyDeleteActually, in retrospect, Ramirez makes nearly perfect sense. We re-sign VMart and finally retire 'Tek in 2011 (hopefully) - it would make sense to have an almost ready backup waiting in the wings. And extra bench space + even $3 million (though more would be nice, obviously) this year would be better than the corpse of Mike Lowell, as much as I love him. Ignore the rambling.

I'll take a corpse who can play 120 games have 17 HR's and 75 rbi's and hit .290 . Is Adrian Beltre that much better than Mike Lowell?
But from where? I don't think he'd ever get another 120 games. He don't make sense as a DH (as a right handed double-play machine and at least not until we find out if [the corpse of] Ortiz can still hit - which I'm inclined to believe it/he will), he's a liability at third and completely untested at first. And I'm not on the Beltre bandwagon - I'm happy with no-more big trades (except for Nady and a LHP, but those aren't big) and seeing how Kotchman handles first on a regular basis (whose 2008 numbers, at least, are close to those you mention for Lowell - not something to get worked up over, I know, but at least his glove works). For $12 million, I just want more than a liability. Even a lovable liability like Lowell.
