G19: Orioles 7, Red Sox 6 (10)

Orioles - 010 000 300 3 - 7 14 0
Red Sox - 000 004 000 2 - 6 13 1
More crappy performances by several members of the bullpen: Hideki Okajima, Scott Atchison and Scott Schoeneweis were the culprits today.

I'm unclear why Terry Francona opted for Atchison over Manny Delcarmen to start the 10th. Down by three, the Red Sox rallied in the bottom of the 10th, but Darnell McDonald and Marco Scutaro could not bring in the tying run from second.
Example
David Hernandez / Tim Wakefield

Very similar stats this year for the two starters:

IP H R ER BB SO ERA WHIP

Hernandez 17.1 20 10 9 7 13 4.67 1.618
Wakefield 18.1 23 14 13 7 11 6.38 1.636
Lineup:
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Martinez, C
Youkilis, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Drew, RF
Beltre, 3B
Hermida, LF
Van Every, CF

  2. Brady Anderson (now an Orioles broadcaster) is on the pre-game w/ Castig. Castig asked about the comparisons between him and LBJ, does Ellsbury remind Anderson of himself as a young player. Brady says yes only he wasn't as good and exciting, took him longer to develop as a hitter and base stealer.

No mention that they were/are both watched for non-baseball reasons as well. And of course no mention that Brady might like to watch Ellsbury for those reasons, too.

  3. Kid Announcer Day:

Guy doing the Os is identified a "Kevin". NESN couldn't be bothered to put his last name up?!?!

  4. When you're hired for your defense and everyone spends months and months talking about your defense you probably shouldn't make consecutive errors to lead off a game.

  5. So after 8 pitches Wake shuld have had 2 outs, then gets a fly to end it. Instead there are stil runners at 1st and 3rd and only 1 out.
    Be ashamed, Beltre

    ReplyDelete
  6. You can be sure he is ashamed. If we get out of this scoreless and Beltre dongs later, he'll make up for it.

  7. took away the E on reimold. seems like the right decision.

  8. After a few years off I was playing in an adult league game yesterday and caught a number of pop ups. I was amazed at how difficult it is to catch a high pop up with a blue sky. You think you're under it but the ball seems to move farther and farther back on you.

What I mean to say: good catch by Beltre to end the inning.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Not much movement on the knuckler today, it appears.

    ReplyDelete
  10. nice play by beltre on tejada, that was a low scorcher.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Totally blown call by the 2B umpire -- and he was actually in good position -- in Sox's favour, but FY grounds out.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Was the "on-fld delay" an argument about the call?

    ReplyDelete
  13. If you mean with Scutaro grounding to Wigginton, yes. Kirk came out to discuss.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Papi truped GDGD. It said "in play - no out" at first, then changed it

    ReplyDelete
  15. Nice wriggle job by Wake. Now let's make it pay for him. Runs plz!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I for one would not have minded seeing Hermida bunt there

    ReplyDelete
  17. still too early for me to want a bunt.

    ReplyDelete
  18. crazy movement on those first 2 to tatum!

    ReplyDelete
  19. okay, now we pounce:

    fy
    victor
    yook
    flo

    ReplyDelete
  20. 2 More Ks. Wake's 2nd OTT I believe.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Dear Red Sox,

I cannot listen to you today because my employer insists on employing me. Please win in my absence.

Love always (even when you suck),

    ....

    ReplyDelete
  22. i like the look of this.

    OTT: 3rd and 6th.

    ReplyDelete
  23. come on - give me that sweaty dong.

    ReplyDelete
  24. For L:

    FY - walk
    Victor: single to right
Yook - single to left, 1-1!

    pitching change

    ReplyDelete
  25. A large, fatherly dong will be adequate. A lanky, Cuban dong would be acceptable as well.

    ReplyDelete
  26. good hitters, gotta happen some time!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Going to the O's bullpen with 2 on and no out. This can only help us ;>

    ReplyDelete
  28. EL: Would rather not kill the rally, though.

    ReplyDelete
  29. When L and I went to FP on our 20th anniversary (7/20/05), Hendrickson started for Tampa. Faced 6 batters in the first, got 0 outs. Then he left!

    ...

    shit, close for flo

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hendrickson to Hernandez: "I'm a fuckin' up your ERA!!!"

    ReplyDelete
  31. Per GDGD graphic - that was a DEEP ball by Drew

    ReplyDelete
  32. beltre! more hits! everybody hits!

    ReplyDelete
  33. i would like our bullpen to refrain from making this one even close to a nail-biter.

    ReplyDelete
  34. DOCTAH DOUBLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. 9 batters, 4 runs. Pretty good inning. Make it stand!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hey all, joining in for the relatively early game. I was on GDGD for the big inning- fun!

Is Wake really mixing up his pitches this inning, or is GDGD just crazy?

    ReplyDelete
  37. GD is correct, Wakefield threw a bunch of fastballs behind in the count (since he has a big lead) and at least one sub-60 curveball.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi AC. Yeah, it was wierd seeing a pitch listed as 73 mph with the word fastball beside it. But that's Wake. Pretty good day's work for his "last" start

    ReplyDelete
  39. Fuck. Let's nip this thing in the bud, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Damn Jeemer. Get yer shit together

    ReplyDelete
  41. What the fuck is wrong with this fucking bullpen???

    ReplyDelete
  42. BAL: 010 000 3
    BOS: 000 004

    grrrrrrrrrrrrr

    ReplyDelete
  43. FY jerkin' the berken. Now 6 for 10 against him!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Lead-off double! We started the last inning with Petey on, wouldn't mind the same results this time.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Why the hell is Oki still in the game?

    ReplyDelete
  46. OK, guys. Put this one away. Dozing off here. Yesterday was my birthday - late night. Very late night

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm gone for 10 minutes, and Bard turns all racist on the Os.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The Microwave will have the chance to be the hero again.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Quarter-hero!

Gotta put this one away, there's no bench left.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Telegraphing a sac bunt attempt in an obvious situation makes baby Jesus cry.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Gotta take that pitch the other way, V-Mart

    ReplyDelete
  52. is atchison really our best option at this point?

    ReplyDelete
  53. RR deserves some blame for this game for coughing up runs yesterday and forcing Papelbon to put out the fire.

    ReplyDelete
  54. We have exactly 1 bullpen pitcher. Everyone else is a farce

    ReplyDelete
  55. If anyone can figure out a way to take runs off the board here, it's Lugo.

    ReplyDelete
  56. should have been mdc to start this goddamn inning, unless tito was avoiding him then, but is forced to use him now.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Another masterful lo-lev appearance by MDC. Huzzah!

    ReplyDelete
  58. DREW!!!!!!!!!!

    beltre = potential tying run!

    ReplyDelete
  59. "johnson had that 24 minute wait"

    ReplyDelete
  60. HIT!

tying runs on, winning run batting (bill hall)

    ReplyDelete
  61. ALIVE!

Would it have killed Atchischoeneweis to only give up 2 runs...?

    ReplyDelete
  62. OMG - Hall hits! 7-6!

    microwave time!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Superman wears Darnell McDonald pajamas.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Damn, I HAVE to go, been stretching it for 10 minutes. BE A HERO AGAIN MCDONALD!
Crap - damn birthday get-together at parents.
    WIN!

    ReplyDelete
  65. you mean microwraith?

    marco or bust!

    ReplyDelete
  66. My dogs are demanding a walk, sosock....

    ReplyDelete
  67. shit.

(thanks for letting miggy take you deep, jeemer.)

    on to toronto!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I heard this game in the car as we left the Cape today. So aggravating that Oki blew Wake's lead. Will we ever see Wakefield start another game?

No one will likely read this comment, but if we have to struggle this hard to take two out of three against Baltimore, it is scary to think how we will do against a real team.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Thanks, Laura. I had being the tree falling that no one hears! I missed threading these two games, but you probably were spared lots of my hand-wringing. :)
