G39: Yankees 11, Red Sox 9

Red Sox - 010 131 030 - 9 13 0
Yankees - 510 010 004 - 11 13 0
Recap: Things were very shitty.

Then they got better.

Then they got really good and there was much merriment.

Then they got very shitty again, very quickly.

The End.

Dear Red Sox: The season is almost one-quarter over. It's time to get your ass in gear.

Dice had one of his best starts in a Red Sox uniform against the Blue Jays on May 11 (7-3-1-0-9, 106). More like that, please.

Hughes (5-0, 1.38 ERA) is the first Yankees pitcher with five wins and a sub 1.50 ERA through his first six starts since "Bullet" Bob Turley in 1958. Hughes faced Boston back on May 7 (7-7-2-1-7, 101). His BABIP is an unsustainably-low .223.

Jacoby Ellsbury played for the PawSox today: 1-for-3 (single, walk, run). He will play the outfield for Portland tomorrow.
Example
Today in Baseball History:

1939 - The first baseball game ever televised: Princeton's 2-1 victory over Columbia at the Baker Bowl is broadcast over W2XBS in New York City. The Times: "It is difficult to see how this sort of thing can catch the public fancy."

1945 - Every American League game is rained out for the fourth consecutive day.

1971 - Tommy McCraw of the Senators circles the bases for an inside-the-park home run when three Cleveland fielders (shortstop Jack Heidemann and outfielders Vada Pinson and John Lowenstein) collide while trying to catch his 140-foot pop-up.

1979 - On a windy day at Wrigley Field, the Phillies beat the Cubs 23-22 in 10 innings. Each starting pitcher lasts only 0.1 of an inning.

  2. The season is almost a quarter over? Wow, it doesn't seem possible. It's still cold outside!

    ReplyDelete
  3. this is game 39.
    40 x 4 = 160.

i am pretty sure my new little socks replacing the dfw circles = hot streak.

    Go Team!

    ReplyDelete
  5. why isn't that girl on the thread?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Go Emma! She rocks.

Only light threading for me. I'm transcribing this week, typing all friggin day, gotta save my fingers.

    GO SOX

  7. I like the little hanging sock divider.

    ReplyDelete
  8. groove a fastball - good idea

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh, man, a hit already? Come on, Dice---I want to see you pitch well.

    ReplyDelete
  10. my first "conflicting edits" of the year

    ReplyDelete
  11. OMG, WTF?

Perhaps I can comment in all three letter acronyms tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm in an interesting dilemma. I'm finishing up a paper in the lounge in my residence hall, and I am the only one here, so it's okay to put the TV on. The TV is all the way on the other side of the room, so I can't see it all that well; switching between the ESPN feed and the NESN feed, the picture on ESPN is better - but on the other hand, it's fucking ESPN.

    What to do?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Who's doing the announcing on ESPN? If Jon Miller and Joe Morgan, it's not a tough call for me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. don't know re espn

i thought OB which would be great, but no. espn has been on mute and i did not watch pre game

    ReplyDelete
  15. he is doing this so hughes has a long wait...

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think the DiceK who pitched last time was a clone, not the real DiceK. THIS is the real DiceK, I fear.

    ReplyDelete
  17. it's not miller/morgan. Sounds like dave o'brien, actually.

i switched to NESN after dice loaded the bases. obviously, that will change the luck

    ReplyDelete
  18. we have sox radio - ob is on there

    ReplyDelete
  19. This is not going to be a fun night.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So who do we have for long relief available now?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I can't believe that is our first out. Yikes.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Morgan and Miller are Sunday nights only. There are lots of other ESPN guys, all loathesome, esp Sutcliffe.

But no chance of Morgan/Miller on a Monday night.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It was the second out. They got that out at the plate. But it's the first out DiceK got.

    ReplyDelete
  24. morgan watch a baseball game on two straight nights? right .........

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well, at least that's something to be grateful for about Mondays.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That was the out I meant, at the plate. My comment was just late posting.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Gotcha. I am just grumbly here.

    ReplyDelete
  28. who has sound for that clev infielder clip?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Why do people keep deleting the Red Sox lineup when I post it before games?

    ReplyDelete
  30. because i have posted the lineup in the post around 4 or 4:30.

    ReplyDelete
  31. "Red Sox start chipping away" -Don

    ReplyDelete
  32. "People" can't delete comments. Allan is deleting your lineup comments.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Our much praised new defense does it again.

    ReplyDelete
  34. This is hard to watch...yet, here we sit.

    ReplyDelete
  35. BTW, It's Aaron F'ing Boone on ESPN.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Aaron Boone...much more hated (by me) than Bucky Dent or Bill Buchner.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Heh.

Last night my friends and I spent about an hour compiling a list of Top 10 most painful losses in Boston sports history.

There was pretty intense debate about Buckner vs. Boone, but no doubt about them being 1-a and 1-b.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Losing to the Yankees is always worse than losing to anyone else, even the Mets. So that's why Boone is the bigger evil for me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. gah. been working on random technical ghosts that are screwing up the live broadcast of Stockbridge's annual town meeting. I can't get them resolved. crappy video ensues after an hour of that. The plus side is I haven't been watching the crap on NESN.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Plus, I wasn't around for 1986, but it's hard to imagine a more likeable team than 2003.

And the way it all fell apart w/ Pedro and G***y L****e

Hard to imagine a more sucky defeat.

Not that we're gonna talk about this anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Still, We Sit

    ha ha, funny

Aaron Boone. Terrible person. But not nearly as terrible as He Who I Will Not Name. At least Boone was just doing his job. Not giving the pennant away to the other team $%&?!#

    ReplyDelete
  42. True, true, about The Other.

    ReplyDelete
  43. There can be no loss worse than 2003. No way, all context considered.

Not that we're gonna talk about it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. My vote is for the Boone homerun.

    1. It was the Yankees.
    2. It was Game 7 vs. Game 6.
    3. It was my son's first real interest in the Sox. He stayed up late for that game. Fortunately, his misery was short lived and 2003 was followed by some good years.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Plus 2003 came after 1986, meaning you've already lived through that, so it's more pile-up. Besides NYY, of course, as Amy says.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Mrs G, 2003 took place on Allan's 40th birthday. :(

    ReplyDelete
  47. I never noticed that, I am never looking at the main page usually.

    ReplyDelete
  48. For those inclined and slightly deranged enough, the list we settled upon was.
    1. Aaron Boone '03
    2. Buckner '86
    3. Super Bowl XLII
    4. Bucky Dent '78
    5. Pesky's "Held Ball" '46
    6. B's @ Habs "Too Many Men on the Ice" '79
    7. B's-Flyers "Too Many Men Part II," '10
    8. Game 7, 1975 World Series
    9. The Boston Massacre Yankees/Sox '79
    10. Patriots-Raiders 1976 "Roughing"

What Red Sox moments would you put on the next tier?

What a bad topic of conversation! My apologies haha

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yuck.....
A quick comment on the EXCELLENT post by Laura. (I'm still on the bus, by the way)
I also used to watch almost every game, or at least the parts of them still going on when I got home from the little league field. I haven't been doing so this year, but not because they are not doing as well.
My life is different from what it was, and I'm a different person. I'm still a huge fan of baseball in general, and a die-hard Red Sox fan. They are the team whose roster I know, who I follow every night whether I watch the whole game or not, and whose success or lack of same affects my mood. But I'm not at home every night any more, in fact not very often. I'm watching if I'm here, I'm just nt here all that often. I do check this site almost as soon as I do get home, and usually make some late night comment only RS or LG will see.
I'm still a fan though, win or lose, and will not give up until we are mathmatically eliminated. I may accept that the odds are against us, but will still pull for the unexpected. As several have already mentioned, the unexpected happens all the time in baseball. That's a big part of why we love it!
Now, off to hear the band and watch the rest of the game on the big TV at the bar.
    Manana!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wow, that's a hell of a list, even with those other sports taking up space. ;)

I'm going back to non-thread mode.

    ReplyDelete
  51. joe: #9 is also 78 not 79. i was at game 3 of that series....

when the globe writers come out of the mgr's meeting around 4pm, they post the lineup to extra bases. that is usually when i put up the game post.

    ReplyDelete
  52. That's a lousy way to spend your 40th birthday, Allan.

    ReplyDelete
  53. most the day was great!

not so much for the last 45 minutes and into 10/17

    ReplyDelete
  54. STOPSHOWING BOONE IN THE BBOTH

    ReplyDelete
  55. SoSock, I hope you are out doing things you are enjoying! Good for you. Find whatever makes you happy.

    ReplyDelete
  56. That is one painful list (though I admit that the non-baseball ones mean nothing to me). Are there no Celtics moments? There must be, no? (I wouldn't know; I do not like basketball at all.)

What was the Boston Massacre in 79? I don't remember that.

    ReplyDelete
  57. massacre - early sept 78

    p.s. zimmer must die.

    ReplyDelete
  58. we actually spent some time straining to find a Celtics moment to no avail. When you've won 500000213 (estimate) championships, I guess you haven't had many bad moments.

I don't care for basketball either. Or football. ALthough despite my personal feelings it's undeniable that in the wider scope of things, that Super Bowl is in the eighth circle of hell.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Was that the series the Yankees swept to erase the Red Sox lead, leading to the Bucky Dent game?

    ReplyDelete
  60. amy: yeah yeah yeah ... shut up

    ReplyDelete
  61. Joe, which Superbowl was that? I can't read Roman numerals. :) Seriously, what game was that? The numbers mean nothing to me.

I am not a serious fan of football, as per Laura's post, but I at least enjoy the games I do watch. I find basketball boring. Hockey also (sorry, Joe).

    ReplyDelete
  62. Wow, Allan, you should be impressed that I can remember something that long ago!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Martinez making Tek look better than even I would have expected.

    ReplyDelete
  64. it was 78. that is likely seared on your brain, like a wedding or child's birth or something.

    ReplyDelete
  65. QUADFUCKINGRAGULAR!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. PAPI DONG!!!

We love you Papi! We always will :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Had to lg back on long enough to say - PAPIIIIII!
Come in back, baby come on back.

    ReplyDelete
  68. DO: Do you want to suck today or should I?
VM: I'm thinking I'll suck today.
DO: Good. I'll go long then.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Papi!! Hey, there are some signs of improvement on the team.

1978---it is seared in my memory. Graduated from law school, moved to a new apartment, started a new job.

    And Bucky Dent.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Amy, the Super Bowl was the one in the '07-'08 season when the Patriots went 16-0 during the regular season, then lost the Super Bowl.

    That's pretty ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Red Sox fans have trouble remembering the year 1978??? Come on.

    ReplyDelete
  72. tiz = good, but we need to pick up the pace of our chipping away ....

    ReplyDelete
  73. I had not read L's terrific post before stating, "yet, here we sit." And then Allan's "Still, We Sit."

It all fits together very nicely.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Thanks, Joe. I do remember that, of course. I just don't know what Superbowl has what number. Wish they would just use dates, like baseball does! Can you imagine having to refer to a particular WS as WS LXIIV?

    ReplyDelete
  75. I'd imagine that, if the world exists past 2012, it's gonna get pretty silly to start roman-numeralling Super Bowl 84, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Amy - thank you, I am. :) I have rediscovered my passion for all things music, I actually blew off my little league game Sat. to spend the day at a bluegrass/americana festival at the base of Pilot Mountain - beautiful.
OK, gotta go or my status as the band's unofficial sound guru will be jeopardized.
Only 4 more of those dongs and we have a new game!

    ReplyDelete
  77. what would be the longest SB number?

    33: XXXIII

    83? LXXXIII

    ReplyDelete
  78. I think 83 would probably take the cake

    ReplyDelete
  79. Joe Grav,
I could tell you a very sad story about a college that had never been to the NCAA basketball tournament, went undefeated in their conference in 1983, and lost in the conference tournament final. Now, in 2010, they have still never been to the NCAA tourney.

    But, I'll spare you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. well then I guess we could start getting silly and talking about super bowl MCMXLIII.

    i guess we'll stick with 83.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Mrs.GotRibe, is that a new england school?

    ReplyDelete
  82. they should just use I, II ...

    So 45 ...

    SUPER BOWL IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
    IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

    ReplyDelete
  83. We're gonna need some fucking pitching.

    ReplyDelete
  84. No, it's a Virginia school. But we beat a Boston school in the conference tournament this year.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Remember that old taunt---We need a pitcher, not a glass of water?

    ReplyDelete
  86. pitcher of water? i honestly have never heard that until now.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Yea, I always thought it was a belly itcher.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Don and Jerry sound more like Yankee announcers.

    ReplyDelete
  89. We used to yell it at bad pitching at little league games. Not very sportsmanlike, I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  90. i think a belly itcher might be an improvement tonight - or a belly dancer.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Here comes our age difference. Amy posted what she was doing in 1978. I graduated high school and began university. Saw the Stones and lots of baseball. Same baseball Amy and Allan were watching, from a different perspective. And a lot of other fun stuff that is not appropriate in a family thread.

    Anyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  92. I never heard of the belly itcher one, though it came up before mine on Google. There are a whole bunch of references to the glass of water one, so I guess it wasn't just my home town.

    ReplyDelete
  93. We want a pitcher, not a glass of water. We said that all the time, too.

I never heard belly itcher. That's cute too.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Laura, did you ever hear the glass of water taunt? Maybe it was a New York thing?

    ReplyDelete
  95. Never mind---you beat me to it! I bet it's one of those regional things. Where are you from, Mrs GotRibe?

    ReplyDelete
  96. I was wondering how Joe would say where he was in 1978! :)

We are very multi-gen here, I love that.

    ReplyDelete
  97. In 1978 I thought I was a grown up. Little did I know!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Speaking of multi-generational awesomeness, L, I spoke with Mr. Ish today about Mini-JoS in August and he said he'd look into it.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Amy, I'm from Virginia. Maybe it is a regional thing.

1978--let's see. I was a junior in high school, starting to learn that there was a bigger world out there.
    Concerts? Doobie Brothers, Eagles
    Sports? Redskins

    ReplyDelete
  100. Yeah, in 1978 I was the same age that my younger daughter is now. She is, however, at a whole different place than I was at her age: married, starting a career, thinking about starting a family. She says she has no plans to settle down for a long time and is not at all sure what she wants to do with her working life.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Come on Pedey, do something here.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Joe, that would be great!

I meant to say it earlier, Joe has revived interest in JoS2. He and Ish might drive up together. I'll check in w/ Tim and Woti about it, since they are near (relatively speaking).

So if anyone else is up for it, let us know.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Hey look, there's a game on. We have two on!

    ReplyDelete
  104. 14 yo in summer of 78 - going to be a sophomore in high school in the fall.

    ReplyDelete
  105. a good werd could mean 6-5....

    ReplyDelete
  106. I love FY. He reminds me of what our team could/should be doing.!

    ReplyDelete
  107. 1978 Ramones Talking Heads Elvis Costello

No Eagles or Doobies on my playlist! :)

Amy, how old were you when you and Harvey got married?

    ReplyDelete
  108. ON FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  109. We were married in 76. I was turning 24 that summer, he had just turned 22. Just babes!

    ReplyDelete
  110. ON FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  111. FUCK YEAH, YOU NO MUSIC ATBATTING MUTHERFUIVKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  112. OMG, we scored THREE runs!! DREW!!

    ReplyDelete
  113. Woulda been five runs if Drew cared. :(

Does this joke ever get old?

    ReplyDelete
  114. Hey wow, Allan called it!

    ON FIRE

    ReplyDelete
  115. Drew also showed some emotion his last AB when called out on strikes. So there, O'B.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Hey Ish, I used more exclamation points than you did.

    ReplyDelete
  117. 1978 Ramones Talking Heads Elvis Costello

No Eagles or Doobies on my playlist! :)

    Always the rebel, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  118. Yes you did, Mrs. GotRibe. I pushed the exclamation point button until I got bored.

    ReplyDelete
  119. never gets old. never not funny.

... good thing drew decided he felt like playing tonight rather than nurse a broken fingernail .........

    ReplyDelete
  120. Amy, that is about the same age A & I were when we moved in together. I am also 2 yrs (+ a bit) older than him.

    ReplyDelete
  121. oh and of course

    DON'T FUCK THIS UP DICE!

    ReplyDelete
  122. I was a rebel, yes, but I had plenty of company with the punk and new wave sounds.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Which reminds me, Laura.... we were promised a certain story during the baseball season.

    ReplyDelete
  124. another reason why last inning was fun:

    F8
    5-3
    1B
    2B
    HR ***
    PF3

the ol' 2 outs and nothing going on rally.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Amy, I have not forgotten. I am posting it on the anniversary of the actual date, as promised.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I would say bring in a new pitcher, but who?

Is Wake still in the rotation or is he back in the pen? I haven't been following the day to day rosterness during the playoffs of a sport that will not be named

    ReplyDelete
  127. That's about the same age we were married, too. I was 23. Jay (Mr. Ribe) was 24.

    ReplyDelete
  128. That's nice, Mrs G. Funny to think of those young days, isn't it.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Hey Ish, you would get this-

To make myself feel better after the other night, I played NHL EastSide Hockey Manager and cheated to trade for all 4 top picks in the draft, and took Hall, Seguin, Connolly and Fowler.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Wow, that's pretty amazing---what are the odds that we would all still be in the same relationship that we started when so young?

    ReplyDelete
  131. My tweet extolling the virtues of JD Drew was just re-tweeted by a popular Boston blog, it won't be long before I get people replying to me to tell me about how he sucks.

    ReplyDelete
  132. "Still, We Leap Up And Cheer Because Drew Is On Fire"

    ReplyDelete
  133. Joe, I could tell you a sad story about a hockey team with the best record in the NHL this year who didn't even make it out of the first round of the playoffs.

    But, I'll spare you. :)

(You have to remember, I'm from Virginia, not Boston.)

    ReplyDelete
  134. July 20, moon landing day. (Don't ask why I remember that.)

    ReplyDelete
  135. Still, We Sit and Hope Dice Does Not Blow This Even More Than He Already Has

    ReplyDelete
  136. And no sooner do I type that...

    ReplyDelete
  137. I'm not from Boston.

    Neither is Amy.

    Or Allan.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Still, It's Only The 5th Inning, People

    ReplyDelete
  139. Immense suckage

    Suckage of grand proportions

    ReplyDelete
  140. Still, We Prepare for ANother 5-hour Red Sox/Yankees Game

    ReplyDelete
  141. Yea, I know. I just meant that I'm a Caps fan and not a Bruins fan. That's all. Maybe I didn't imply that very well.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Get Dice out of there. Let's at least try to keep this game close.

    ReplyDelete
  143. And I said I wasn't threading to give my poor fingers a break. I'll be typing 8 hours a day all week...

    ReplyDelete
  144. Oh I gotcha, I was just playing the "our horror was worse than your horror" game.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I know what you meant, I was just being stupid. I used to be an Islanders fan, 100 years ago or so.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Haha, Islanders.

They really need to move off of Long Island.

    ReplyDelete
  147. No, I got that Joe. And, I wouldn't want to get into the debate about which was worse. Plus, if you were at Game 7, then you win!

I'm checking out for a little bit. Mr. Ribe won't watch Yankees/Red Sox games (too nerve racking) so we're going to watch 24 now.

    I'll check in periodically.

    ReplyDelete
  148. chan ho parkis up?

    that = 4 runs\, at lea

    ReplyDelete
  149. Blue Light special, only at V-Mart!

    ReplyDelete
  150. "4 runs, at least"

i got fucked up and vmart went deep

    ReplyDelete
  151. Going to watch another TV show while this game is on! Can't imagine it. But there you go. All different ways to be a fan.

    Shift this!

    ReplyDelete
  152. Do you guys see these ads with the faux Hemingway guy, "Stay thirsty my friends" ?

I think they're clever. Just saw the one where he's feeding the eaglets with an eye dropper.

    ReplyDelete
  153. L, you're a little behind :-p those have been cultural sensations (in the US at least) all year long.

I actually read a pretty good article about that campaign in a communications research magazine - a successful, funny, but "highbrow" ad campaign for beer is a rarity

    ReplyDelete
  154. Figures, we're always behind here. :)

Actually I've seen them for a while but never asked on-thread. I don't read about ads and marketing anymore. (I used to. Now I just complain about them.)

    ReplyDelete
  155. let's get wakefield another W ...

    ReplyDelete
