G53: Red Sox 9, Athletics 4

Athletics - 002 020 000 - 4 13 0
Red Sox - 000 032 13x - 9 14 1
Victor Martinez went 5-for-5, with a career-high four doubles, leading Boston's comeback.

Martinez has had three other five-hit games: July 16, 2004 (3 HR, 7 RBI), July 4, 2006, and August 2, 2009. Martinez hit three doubles against the Twins about two weeks ago, on May 20.

Martinez doubled with one out in the fifth, Kevin Youkilis singled, and Adrian Beltre lined a three-run dong over the Wall, cutting Oakland's lead from 4-0 to 4-3. In the sixth, the first three Red Sox batters walked. Dustin Pedroia's GIDP tied the game and Martinez's ground rule double into the triangle gave the Sox a 5-4 lead.

A two-out walk by J.D. Drew, followed by Bill Hall's triple, made it 6-4 -- and the Sox batted around in the eighth to put the game on ice. With one out, Pedroia doubled, Martinez doubled, Youkilis singled; after David Ortiz flew out, Beltre singled and Drew singled. There were a couple of wild pitches, too.

Lackey (6-12-4-2-4, 116) allowed a small army of base runners, but stranded most of them, including seven in the 4th-5th-6th innings.

The Blue Jays led the Rays 5-0 after six innings, but Tampa got three in the seventh and (aided by five walks) four in the ninth and won 7-6. The Yankees beat the Orioles 3-1.

East: NYY 2.5 GB, TOR 4.5 GB, BOS 5.5 GB.

Oakland is 28-24 and is 1 GA of the Rangers in the AL West.

The A's have scored 205 runs and allowed 212 runs (expected record: 25-27). They went 16-12 in May despite scoring 99 runs and allowing 113. They have won eight of their last 10 games and 10 of their last 14. (Fangraphs' Matt Klaassen on the A's.)

Boston is 29-23, 5 GB Tampa Bay.

In his last four starts, Lackey has allowed 31 hits and 16 walks in 24.1 innings (6.29).
I've looked at some of those walks and they weren't really walks. I've gone back and looked. My control is not as bad as it seems. ... I'm going to be OK. I'm not worried about it.
The A's have allowed only 21 earned runs in their past 10 games (27 runs overall). In six of the 10 games, Oakland has allowed 0 or 1 run.

Michael Silverman, Herald:
Red Sox starters were 6-6 with a 4.86 ERA in April, a perfect reflection of the team's overall mediocrity that month.

But with Jon Lester leading the way, they rebounded in May.
Starters ERA:
            APR MAY DIFF
Rays 2.76 3.40 -0.64
Yankees 3.41 3.94 -0.53
Blue Jays 4.02 4.46 -0.44
Red Sox 4.86 4.32 +0.54
The Red Sox traded Jonathan Van Every to the Pirates for minor league catcher Josue Peley. This will most likely be the last time you hear Peley's name (because he has hit .186/.241/.234 in two seasons of A ball).

1918: Trailing the Yankees 5-4, the White Sox load the bases in the ninth inning with no outs. Chick Gandil hits a line drive to New York third baseman Frank Baker, who starts a game-ending triple play.

1923: The Giants score in every inning and beat the Phillies 22-8.
Giants - 421 155 121 - 22 23 0
Phillies - 140 110 010 - 8 15 0
1925: Lou Gehrig pinch-hits for Pee Wee Wanninger, beginning his streak of playing in 2,130 consecutive games.

2000: Tomo Ohka of the Pawtucket Red Sox pitches a perfect game (on only 76 pitches!) against the Charlotte Knights, winning 2-0. It is only the 3rd perfect game in the 117 years of the International League. Three years later, on August 10, 2003, Bronson Arroyo of the Paw Sox will pitch the IL's 4th perfect game.

  1. The other game where a team scored in every inning is apparently this one in 1964 between St Louis and the Cubs. Wasn't Jere obsessed with that feat for a while?

  2. It's MY obsession!

It has happened a few times -- the Rockies did it in the late 90s or so -- though the only times the visiting team has done it has been in the NL.

A few AL teams have scored in all 8 at home and did not bat in the 9th, but no AL team has ever scored in all 9 innings.

    Btw, neat linescore last Saturday:

    NYM - 111 300 000 - 6 9 0
    MIL - 412 100 00x - 8 9 1

Looking forward to you stepping in for J.D. in 2012 (assuming we're all still here).

  7. Looking at the pitching matchups for this series, I don't feel very good about it.

Not that it's a good indicator of talent, but all of their starters have better ERAs than our respective starter.

I'm hoping Pedroia comes back and helps us through.

  8. In her Mailbag, Amalie Benjamin rips Yankee Joe West, in a way you don't usually hear in these types of chats:

"It is completely inappropriate for Joe West to be doing what he's doing. ... [T]he antics that West has been pulling have been far out of bounds, including making sure that reporters know where he's going to be when the policy is to keep umpires' schedules under wraps. Umpires are not supposed to make themselves the story, and that is clearly what West has been doing ... According to a report by Yahoo!, Major League Baseball is planning to either fine or suspend West ... He has already been fined for the situation with the White Sox. Essentially, no one should know West's name. The fact that everyone does at this point is a problem ..."

  9. He has several.

Indeed. Many of them fall under the category of "interesting linescore patterns".

Lots of 0s, no 0s, repeating numbers, ascending or descending numbers, palindromes, matching top and bottom innings, etc.

tom caron: "this is a completely different oakland team, but lackey has had a lot of success against this team."

    ooooh kay.

    ReplyDelete
  18. But certainly, looking at what Lackey did against the 2002/2003 A's is very relevant to what happens tonight. How well he did against guys like Scott Hatteberg, David Justice, Jeremy Giambi, and Randy Velarde is a good sign for tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  19. No need for MLB TV today since I am in the OAK/SF TV area.

    ReplyDelete
  20. who played in that minor league game?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I saw the A's AAA team yesterday, their closer hit 101

    Who's their AAA team again?

I saw the Reno Aces play against the Sacramento River Cats. I e-mailed RS that our own (or formerly our own) Jeff "Gumball" Bailey hit a single and scored Reno's only run.

The park built right in downtown Reno is part of the city's downtown more-than-just-gambling renewal effort. The park experience was much better than, say, Oakland's. It's not quite San Francisco, but there is lots of General Admission seating, including a lawn past the right field fence. (GA was $7.) Some good food, friendly atmosphere, no lines for bathrooms or drinks, seats about 12,000. Awesome.

  22. Boooo rain delays. I'm still in Charlotte so I was watching Phillies/Braves and they're now in a rain delay, too. And it's raining outside here as well!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Glaus 3R HR off Hamels. Braves to stay on top in the NL East? Maybe not likely, but the NL has an incredibly crowded wild card race right now.

    ReplyDelete
  24. NESN had the Portland-New Britain game on yesterday, Casey Kelly didn't look all that good , but Anthony Rizzo 1b looked pretty decent, he,like Lester, also overcame cancer. He is only 20 and looks like a cant miss, from the one game I saw and what the announcers were saying about him, he hit an absolute bomb yesterday.

  25. play ball!

would have liked to have seen casey.

    I wasn't even thinking baseball!

  27. It's interesting that the San Francisco Giants went through two young speedy outfielders in Rajai Davis and Fred Lewis before giving up on them. Now both are having successful years batting leadoff for teams in the supposedly tough AL. Lewis had a leadoff HR vs Tampa today.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Zenslinger summed it up, but Rick Burleson is also the hitting and 1B coach for the Aces.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Zen, that Reno experience sounds heavenly.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ish, I'm sure I should know this, but I haven't been threading. Why are you in Charlotte? Whenever I hear you are traveling, I know you are happy. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. It was a crazy game yesterday, there were 5 HR including a grand slam

    ReplyDelete
  32. hit!

  34. Oh. Duh. The River Cats are the Oakland AAA. I thought they were the Giants'...but of course that's Fresno.

Other River Cats I did not have my eye out for: John Halama, Lenny DiNardo, Edwar Ramirez.

    ReplyDelete
  35. L, I'm here visiting my sister who moved down here for her new job in January. I flew down here last Tuesday and I'm going home on Thursday. I do like traveling. This was my first time ever traveling by air, which was quite an experience.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I thought it must be sister-related. I just said to Allan, Ish must be visiting his sister or something.

Your first time flying, yay! How did you find it?

    ReplyDelete
  39. read back through the thread. Best as I've been able to observe on this blog, Allan has plenty of obsessions.

I like this question on Ask Amalie:
In the words of Bernie Carbo ... " I probably smoked two joints, drank about three or four beers, got to the ballpark, took some [amphetamines], took a pain pill, drank a cup of coffee, chewed some tobacco, had a cigarette, and got up to the plate and hit.’’ Amalie, I was wondering what is your game time ritual?

  45. I feel like the fielding has been lack(ey)luster this inning. Not that a layout isn't trying, but seemed like they thought he'd just pull up at 2nd. and the fielding by scutaro earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  46. did not look like he had a decent chance to catch it either.

    ReplyDelete
  47. L, I was NERVOUS on car ride to the bus, from the bus to Boston, but then I got a little less nervous at the airport, especially going through security. I ordered some hamburger sliders but I could still only eat half of one, and I drank about 2/3 of a beer before final call for boarding.

I waiting until the last minute so I didn't have time to be nervous at all, then when I got on the plane I thought I'd be a nervous wreck, but I actually calmed down almost completely. Then the plane ride was perfectly fine. I took a bunch of pictures.

And by the way, having a netbook at the airport = Total win!

    ReplyDelete
  48. blue light off the wall -- thanks to wrong way gross!

    ReplyDelete
  49. The annoying part was thinking (and swearing I knew) the plane had wifi but it did not. Oh well. It was only a 100 minute flight.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Ish, sounds great! And since the flight was fine and you weren't anxious, maybe the next time you fly you won't have the pre-flight jitters.

I also love having my netbook at the airport. So convenient.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Do I have permission to be thoroughly annoyed with John Lackey yet?

    ReplyDelete

Hey, Island of the Blue Dolphins is a great book!

    ReplyDelete
  70. way better than a Lackey game, that's for sure.

The Spanish is a saying I heard in class in high school and it has always stuck with me.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I've been listening to cumbias, so my head is full of Spanish.

    ReplyDelete
  72. guy in "scoring position" does not move even to third on a single ... hmmm ...

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oh yeah, I haven't read that one since I was a kid either. This is one of the bonuses of having a kid--sharing all these books with her (subjecting her to them). She really enjoys 'em, but isn't a voracious reader yet. Lots of starts but not enough finishes (in an afternoon after you can't do anything but read).

    ReplyDelete
  74. I'd say he held up.

    Belt one, Beltre!

  77. I think we once had an extended OT thread about children's lit. Amy & I are both Charlotte's Web nuts.

The only bad thing is that Emma won't be reading any of my books when she gets a little older. Grrr, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Can we call them homres if they're Beltre's?

    ReplyDelete
  79. But Lackey comes back out. can't we cap him at...oh 40 pitches.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think we should!

FDR didn't seem to stick. I liked it but it didn't take.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I think we can reasonably say that he is the Beltre of Homres.

    ReplyDelete
  82. The only bad thing is that Emma won't be reading any of my books when she gets a little older. Grrr, etc.

why not? is it an OOP thing?

    ReplyDelete
  83. The problem with "FDR" is Beltre started walking. Now he has to settle for a boring nickname like "Snake-eyes".

    ReplyDelete
  84. No, it's an unpublished thing.

    ReplyDelete
  85. The problem with "FDR" is Beltre started walking.

    It's a miracle!

  86. Evening, all. Just checking in for a bit. I left dinner and the score was 4-0. Imagine my delight to come home to 4-3!

And yes, Charlotte's Web---one of my two favorite childhood books along with The Phantom Tollbooth. Those two books turned me on to reading and changed my life forever. There are others in my top ten, but those are my top two.

    And Lackey---definitely lacking.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I recall the Charlotte's Web conversation. The Phantom Tollbooth is another favorite of mine for sure.

    Stopping... now.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I remember loving A Wrinkle in Time. I can't for the life of me remember what it was about.

    ReplyDelete
  91. A Wrinkle in Time, for sure. I appreciated it even more when I read it to Rebecca. There were layers there I never saw as kid.

    ReplyDelete
  92. It's about fighting totalitarianism. A family whose father has been taken away. Kids do some crazy time travel thing and bring him home.

    ReplyDelete
  93. A very multilayered book, very sophisticated.

    ReplyDelete
  94. A Wrinkle in Time was about two kids, a sister and brother, who somehow end up in a journey through the wrinkle in time. It's got layers of psychology, morality, Christian symbolism, etc., that were lost on me as a ten year old. I saw it more as an adventure story, which it is, but much more.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Oh, yes, and the political layers as well. Of course, Laura, you would remember that!

    ReplyDelete
  96. We loved a Wrinkle in Time!

We're reading The Graveyard Book now.

Kids today like being scared a lot more than when I was a kid.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Maybe in the off season instead of reading Infinite Jest we should reread a Wrinkle in Time.

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  98. I was completely unaware of Xian symbolism until pretty recently. To me they were freedom fighters against fascism.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Ha ha, that's a good one, Amy. I think we should read Dickens. Just as fat as IJ but we'll all understand it.

    ReplyDelete
  100. A Wrinkle in Time is one of my favorites. A friend of mine gave it to emma for her birthday this year, but I'm not sure she's quite there yet. soon I hope.

The Chronicles of Narnia were what really got me reading. Read them the summer after 2nd grade and then every year after that into high school.

Lots of Happy Hollisters, Boxcar Children, Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Tom Swift, and countless other series.

Something Wicked This Way Comes was (and is) a big one for me.

    ReplyDelete
  104. A Wrinkle in Time is my #1.

I think it's time for me to reread A Wrinkle in Time...again. It's been awhile.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Mrs G, that's great

I re-read a whole bunch of children's and YA books a few years ago. It was so much fun.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Dickens would be good. I still remember reading David Copperfield. I bought a used copy at a book fair and devoured it.

    ReplyDelete
  107. And A Wizard of Earthsea while your at it.

I'm a big fan of children's literature, especially that world of "young adult" fantasy. So much good stuff can be found there. And dreck, but that's everywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Now would be a good time to cash in on some base runners.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Time to cash in!!!!

    GET OUT OF MY MIND

    ReplyDelete
  110. If the Sox don't capitalize on this I'm going to kick a puppy. Or at least draw a picture of one and scribble on it viciously.

    ReplyDelete

    Oh shit. Squander but tied.

    ReplyDelete
  112. 2 more, V-Mart, bat yourself in.

    ReplyDelete
  113. YES!!! VMART! And we take the lead!

    ReplyDelete
  118. The Wrinkle in Time sequels were great, too.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  121. No way! You've been hanging around a long time. :)

    ReplyDelete
  122. Looking back at it, it appears to be Amy's first foray into the comments on WMTC.

Also, unpublished unschmublished. The future is young, so to speak and the modes of distribution are fascinating these days.

    ReplyDelete
  123. tor 5-3, tb has 2 on with 2 outs in top of 9th, maddon just got tossed

    ReplyDelete
  124. Yes Zen, the sequels are great.

A Swiftly Tilting Planet, A Wind in the Door...
Any others? I don't remember the plots as well on these because I haven't read them as much. Maybe I'll reread the whole series.

I tried to read an autobiographical book of hers not too long ago. I couldn't get into it.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Well thanks, but my fiction is unpublished and will remain so. I moved on. Published a ton of other stuff, so that helped. But it sucks anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  126. although unschmublished is a nice word

    ReplyDelete
  127. A Wind in the Door, then Planet. If there were others, they were latter-day sequels.

  128. now THAT was misplaying a ball!!!!

  131. OK, I am outta here. GO SOX!
