G72: Rockies 2, Red Sox 1

Red Sox - 000 000 001 - 1 7 0
Rockies - 000 010 01x - 2 9 0
Lester (6-6-1-1-6, 90) allowed a single and a walk to start the fifth, and had nearly pitched out of danger when Todd Helton rapped an RBI single to right. Hideki Okajima gave up a run on three consecutive one-out singles in the eighth.

Chacin allowed four hits and five walks in 6.2 innings, but they were nearly all bunched together in two innings. Mike Cameron singled to open the third, but was thrown out stealing. Josh Reddick singled and, after a bunt from Lester, Marco Scutaro and Dustin Pedroia walked. With the bases loaded, Victor Martinez worked a full count but grounded to second.

In the seventh, Adrian Beltre walked with one out and Daniel Nava singled. After Chacin fanned Cameron, he walked Reddick to load the bases. Joe Neimel came into face pinch-hitter David Ortiz and Papi grounded to second.

Boston rallied in the ninth as Beltre lead off with a double. Nava struck out, but Cameron singled Beltre home. Pinch-hitters Bill Hall (F9) and Mike Lowell (6-3) could not deliver. Lowell's grounder was deep in the hole, but Clint Barmes had time to dive for it, tumble a bit, then get to his feet and throw to first. A turtle could have beaten it out for a hit, but, alas, Lowell is no turtle.

The Yankees beat the Diamondbacks 9-3 and the Rays lost to the Padres 2-1, so both Boston and Tampa Bay fell to 1.5 GB in the East.

The last time the Red Sox played in Colorado was October 28, 2007, when Lester and friends finished a four-game sweep of the Rockies in the World Series.Lester gets the ball again tonight, as the Red Sox begin a road trip with three games each against the Rockies and Giants. (After that, five of their next eight games are against the Rays.)

AL East:
Padres/Rays, 7 PM
Yankees/Diamondbacks, 9:30 PM
Example
June 22:

1894 - Washington scores in every inning and beats Boston 26-12. Washington's George Tebeau scores four runs without getting a hit.

1912 - It's Ty Cobb's turn to bat with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, and the Tigers trailing 11-3, but no one can find him. George Mullin pinch-hits and flies out to end the game. Cobb was in the clubhouse taking a shower.

1916 - The Braves pull off a triple steal against the Giants in the 11th inning. It is the only extra-inning triple steal in National League history. It has happened only once in the AL: by the White Sox against the Senators on June 25, 1941.

    F the Angels.

  6. RS - I wrote a long somewhat sabre-y look at Ubaldo Jimenez on my blog. I'll post the link here with your permission.

  8. Here we go Red Sox, here we go.

A game I'll be able to watch! Holy shit! Love the semi-late start.

Work and groceries for now, then wine and beisbol at 8:40.

I hope he gets traded soon. We need that roster spot.

  18. Maybe lowell will get some ABs with NL rules in effect.

A couple of pinch-hitting spots, for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks for the kind words, RS.

Is anyone else shocked that San Diego is 40-29, +59 RD?

Also, the Red Sox have out-scored SD by 102 runs so far.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Interesting, mattymatty. Even for a non-sabremetrics person like me. I hope his luck starts running out soon. Really soon.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks, WCS.

Do you live out west? I just moved to Portland, OR from Philly.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I can't believe we have to listen to Rockies announcers. That's how much Allan dislikes Dave O'Brien!

    ReplyDelete
  27. rox tv had has a few poll questions to text into -- all about 2007!

one asked are you able to wear red again or are you still not over it!

    ReplyDelete
  28. So on Thursday Tim will glimpse behind the gamethread curtain here at Chez L-Sock.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Mattymatty, how do you like Portland so far? My friends who have lived there really liked it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Lucky Tim! I hope he reveals all your secrets---like do you talk to each other while watching or just read each other's posts? :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm in the San Fran area, along with Zenslinger.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Ofer was here in 2007 and he didn't tell. :)

Joe Grav was here, too, but we didn't thread. It was a weekend, he went to the game and we went to work.

    ReplyDelete
  33. We're still in Boston (last night), so we have NESN.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Cameron get thrown out at the plate?

    ReplyDelete
  35. So weird to see the pitcher bat. It's hard for me to believe that I used to watch all games by these rules.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i bitch about the announcers WAAAAAY more in the room than i do in comments.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Cameron got thrown out at second.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Great to see Lester do something productive with that at-bat!

    ReplyDelete
  39. i bitch about the announcers WAAAAAY more in the room than i do in comments.

    Lucky Laura.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I feel the same way re DH. But honestly, I hardly remember baseball before the DH. By the time I was a conscious fan, it was post DH.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hard to imagine that. No wonder Laura gets pissy about it!

    ReplyDelete
  42. CS - must have missed a sign. was dead easy.

    ReplyDelete
  43. i bitch about the announcers WAAAAAY more in the room than i do in comments.

    Lucky Laura.

    Indeed

    ReplyDelete
  44. I remember hating the DH rule when it was adopted.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hard to imagine that. No wonder Laura gets pissy about it!

People may think I am impatient.

    They are wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  46. And remember I was a Mets fan until 75 so really thought that the AL was ruining baseball.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Speaking of Allan complaining, one season I forbid the word JIMY to be uttered in my presence.

    It came to that.

Then Jimy was gone, and it only got worse!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yes, we are all afraid to mention He Who Cannot Be Named.

    ReplyDelete
  49. All right---all bases are covered!

    ReplyDelete
  50. According to MLB.com Ubaldo Jimenez left the ballpark before today's game with flulike symptoms.

    ReplyDelete
  51. time for a blue light special.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Mrs G, which game did you see in Boston - Sunday?

Amy, I was thinking of you re Mets and no DH.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Apodaca, great name. Sounds like an Italian dish. Chicken apodaca with pesto.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Sorry for the delayed response, L-girl. I'm kinda in and out tonight (kids).

I love Portland. The weather has sucked since I've been here (about a month and a half), but today was beautiful. I love that you can see Mt. Hood from downtown. Never fails to blow my mind.

Also blowing my mind: Chacin's lack of control. Make him throw a strike Victor!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Maybe that flu is the key to Matty's predictions of his unsustainable record.

    ReplyDelete
  56. AHHH!! NO SQUANDER, NO SQUANDER!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Wow, that sucked. At least we made him throw some pitches.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Damn. Classic baseball scenario of bases loaded, two out, full count.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Mattymatty, that's great. I have only been to the coast in Oregon, but it was one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. A whole coastline without commercial development - what a concept!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Yes Laura, we were at Sunday's game. Great seats behind home plate about 20 rows up or so. It was great to see HH regain his composure and pitch really well. I was hoping for a pitcher's duel and it didn't look like I was going to get one after the first two innings.

We tour Berklee in the morning and then back home.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Excellent, Mrs G, what a treat!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Jon Lester will crush you now.

The Oregon coast is incredible. Actually got married there on the beach three years ago before I ever thought about moving out here. One downside: the Oregon beach is much more exotic if you live in Philadelphia, PA. Telling people out here we got married on the Oregon coast isn't very impressive. (not that that's why we did it, but that's the joke).

    Hope Lester is OK...

    ReplyDelete
  63. A whole coastline without commercial development - what a concept!

Like the National Seashore on the Outer Cape? I have never been to Oregon.

    Uh oh, Jon. Ouch.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I think that hit him in the wrist.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Guess he is ok. What are those bugs?

    ReplyDelete
  66. rox pbp guy said herrera had "a long at-bat" in the first and "fouled off a bunch of pitches"

it was a 7 pitch AB and he fouled off 2 pitches. TWO!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Bugs, sun---doesn't look like fun out there.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Well, it's the Pacific coast, so it's very different than the Cape. There's a coastal road linked by a series of bridges, each one unique and beautiful, and a whole string of state park beaches, with beautiful coves and rock outcroppings.

Before our trip, I didn't know anything about it, so it was also a complete surprise and revelation, which is so cool.

MM, very cool re getting married there. I'm not from there so I can be impressed. :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. Purple people, be forewarned: Jon Lester will commence his crushing of you now.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Sounds amazing. We did the PCH from SF to LA in 2003 and although there obviously is some commercial developement along sections of that, there are also those long sections of state parks and incredible vistas. Is it like that?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Is the Rockies starter related to Cologne Man?

    ReplyDelete
  72. I've driven the PCH several times, and I love it, especially (of course) the Big Sur section. Oregon, the one time I was there, anyway, was even less developed and less traveled than that.

We were there in 2002. We drove from border to border, Canada to Mexico, coastal route the whole way. Saw 5 games in 5 parks - only San Diego wasn't home.

Plus of course sand dunes, sea lions, San Francisco, Seattle, etc etc.

    ReplyDelete
  73. GRILLED SALMON SANDWICHES IN SEATTLE!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Come to think of it, I think the PCH is more dramatic - the changes in elevation and the hairpin turns.

Did you see games while you were there in 2003?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Found it on wikipedia; Jhoulys and Houston Astros pitcher Gustavo Chacin are second cousins (Jhoulys' mother is the cousin of Gustavo's grandfather).

    ReplyDelete
  76. Big Sur is unbelievably beautiful. The Oregon Coast, at least where I've been and I haven't seen the whole thing or close to it, is darker, colder and the beaches are wider. Also, the sea stacks... well, I won't describe them. You can see them here: www.smate.wwu.edu/teched/geology/GeoHaz/Erosion/Erosion-02.JPG

    ReplyDelete
  77. We saw a game in SF, but it was pre-season. It was late March.

It must have been amazing to drive the whole coast! How many days did you allow for that?

We loved the PCH---one of our favorite travel experiences. I loved all those parks, all the seals, birds, sea elephants.

The Pacfic NW is the next part of the US I want to see---I'd love to do Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, and the coast and wine country in between.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Crawford hit what would've been a single to right, but he nailed Jaso who was running at first.

    ahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Beautiful, Matty!

(We have to teach you the trick to posting a link. I was given the lesson when I first started threading.)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yeah, I know how to italicize and bold, but i don't know the link trick.

    ReplyDelete
  81. ack, with a second quote around the link

    ReplyDelete
  82. But don't put those brackets. Use < and > instead.

    ReplyDelete
  83. rays with 1 so far in bot8th

    ReplyDelete
  84. Driving the west coast from north to south...sounds tremendous!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Do you need the quotes around the link? I don't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  86. hey - amy with the html tips!!!

    ReplyDelete
  87. If all our starting outfielders weren't hurt I'd say we should just DL Cameron until he's healthy.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Heh, just watch out. Pretty soon I will be throwing OPS+ and WHIP and BABIP around also.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Hey, has anyone seen our offense? It was here a second ago...

    ReplyDelete
  90. It was a very memorable trip. The drive was the whole trip. We spent a few days in SF and a few days in Seattle, but other than that it was a road trip. Then we spent a few days relaxing in Solana Beach, outside San Diego. I think the whole trip was 17 days, something like that.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Patrick, your link won't work - no close quotes. bzzzzt

    ReplyDelete
  92. Yes, quotes around the URL.

    [a href="URL HERE"]name of link[/a}

and replace [ ] with < > as Amy said

    ReplyDelete
  93. "The affable David Ortiz, Big Pappy" says Col anncrs

    ReplyDelete
  94. oh shit, mine has one of those } in there, ignore that

    ReplyDelete
  95. Poor Matty---I don't blame you! Too many teachers...

    ReplyDelete
  96. Look at mine and just substitute < > for the other brackets.

    Try it, it works! :)

    ReplyDelete
  97. My instructions from Allan & Laura, saved to my hard drive:

    Code for adding a link:

    [a href="URL"]Highlighted Text[/a]

but use < and > instead of [ and ]

    ReplyDelete
  98. Quotes around the URL

A space between A and HREF

    ReplyDelete
  99. And thus, we no longer make pitchers hit in the American League.

    ReplyDelete
  100. What's up ladies and gents?

This sucks, been in and out from the computer, kept seeing baserunners for the sox but we are still scoreless. Must be one of them LOBotomys.

And I'm quite looking forward to Thursday, I'll have to bring the laptop over (in addition to the obvious wine).

BTW, we're going to a cottage on Lake Erie over the July 2 weekend, so close to the Pelee winery. Definitely going to have to tour that.

    ReplyDelete
  101. TB loses 2-1.

    Nice play by Reddick there.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Good to see TB hold up their end of the bargain, now, Red Sox and Yankees - do your thing.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Oh man, I really want to go to Pelee Island.

    Oh fuck, they scored.

When we were in Detroit/Windsor for the Sox, we went to Point Pelee, but couldn't make it out to the island. The ferry times didn't work for us.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Apparently the actual winery/vineyard is on land, theres just a store or something on the island. Fucking fraud.

    ReplyDelete
  105. snakes 2nd/3rd and 2 outs vs mfy

  107. Apparently the actual winery/vineyard is on land, theres just a store or something on the island. Fucking fraud.

    You're kidding?! What a rip.

But I drink their Pinot Noir - daily, if possible.

Canada's southernmost point. More southern than half of US states! (Counting any bit of state as a whole state.)

We saw cacti growing there, kind of strange to see in Canada!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Some place near Detroit is south of half of the states in the US? How can that be?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Scutaro has hit the ball hard up the middle twice and has nothing to show for it. Tough luck.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Haven't tried the pinot noir in a couple years at least, dunno why. I'll have to pick up a bottle of it sometime this week ;)

I love the gewurztraminer (and this built-in spell check) even though I normally don't like fruity type whites.

    ReplyDelete
  111. snyder and toucan battling it out.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Crass.

    That was utterly crass.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I hate gwertz's. But I do like some Reislings, which many people find disgusting.

So steak on Thursday, and grilled asparagus. Do you eat gazpacho? Do you like garlic?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Also, you should stay over. No need to drive back late after drinking.

    ReplyDelete
  117. 12 pitch at bat leads to bases loaded for Diamondbacks.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Amy, it's weird, isn't it? Look it up - it's Point Pelee, on the Canadian side of Lake Erie. Even Toronto is well south of much of the US.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I used to hate sweet whites, but my son-in-law introduced me to Reislings, which I now like.

In college I used to drink nothing but sweet wines. I thought when I went from Boone's Farm Apple to Sauterne that I had become VERY sophisticated.

    ReplyDelete
  120. OK, I am going to go look at some maps.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Yeah, I'll stay over. I heard the drive to here is easy in the morning, so no worries!

Dinner sounds amazing. I love garlic, probably more than any other food ever, and I've always wanted to try gazpacho because I think I will love it, just haven't gotten around to making a batch.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Pitcher Haren singles, two runs score!

    C'mon Sox, win this one.

    ReplyDelete
  123. that haren is an all right dude!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Reislings can have a citrusy taste that I really like. Refreshing in summer.

    ReplyDelete
  125. How do you guys feel about sparkling?

I'm not big on champagne, but there is this amazing lightly sparkled white that we buy all the time. Great summer wine.

    Hell, great wine any time.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I make killer gazpacho, and very garlicky. Yum, I'll make it tomorrow morning so it can settle in for Thursday. All we need is good weather.

    ReplyDelete
  127. I should mention that this wine has like 1/3 the bubbles of champagne. That shit is too gaseous.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I love champagne. Looove.

    Sparkles are good. :)

But we're eating steak, so we'll have plenty of red around.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Lester is pitching a heck of a game. We gotta find a way get him some runs.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  139. It's not the worst work, just not that I want to do it. I rotate hosting a radio show once a month where I gather a list of all the live music shows around us (that I know of) and then play music from selected artists. We figure if people actually hear music they'll maybe check the band/performer out. It does work on occasion.

    ReplyDelete
  140. It works without quotes!!! But normally, if you are coding in your blog, it does not. But it appears to work in comments. How very strange.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Holy shit, that is so weird. Normally if you don't use quotes, you will get a message that the link is broken, it cannot post.
