G78: Red Sox 8, Rays 5

Rays - 000 000 122 - 5 12 0
Red Sox - 000 032 30x - 8 10 1
Lackey (7-8-1-2-3, 108) was a bit Diceian -- he allowed at least one baserunner in six of his seven innings and stranded two runners at third -- but he kept the Rays off the board until his 30th batter.

Boston needed five relievers to navigate the final two innings, including Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon, though they each faced only one batter and threw only five and six pitches, respectively.

David Ortiz launched a three-run bomb in the fifth. The first three batters in the sixth reached base against Shields (5-7-5-2-6, 109) and two of them scored, with Jason Varitek and Daniel Nava getting the RBI. Varitek added a sac fly in the seventh and Bill Hall hit a two-run dong.

Adrian Beltre went 4-for-4, with two doubles and two runs scored.

The Mariners scored in five consecutive innings off Phil Hughes and beat the Yankees 7-4. The Red Sox are 1 GB New York.

On May 24, the Red Sox were 8 GB the first-place Rays. Since then, there has been a shift of nine games in the standings, and Boston is now 1 GA of Tampa Bay -- and 2 GB the Yankees.
                     Rays Red Sox
April 6 to May 23 32-12 24-21
May 24 to June 28 12-19 22-10
The Rays have won only three of their last 11 games, and five of their last 16.

On Sunday, center fielder B.J. Upton jogged after a triple in the gap and had to be restrained when Evan Longoria confronted him about it in the dugout. Longoria called it "the byproduct of a frustrated team". Manager Joe Maddon said it was "obvious" that Upton "did not run as hard as he could after the ball".

Shields's last six games: 8.12 ERA, with a .954 opponents OPS.

Also at 7 PM: Mariners/Yankees

  2. Quite a weekend. I enjoyed the Friday game in San Francisco, however cold it was. I wanted to scream at the medical staff when they let Pedroia convince them he was OK after the injury. It wasn't until he had to go to first that they noticed how badly hurt he was.

Then I was in Las Vegas, hearing about the other injuries and just wondering if the % to make the playoffs hadn't taken a serious hit. But six weeks for Pedroia, 15-day for Martinez and no DL for Buchholz is not as bad as I had feared at first.

I got home last night to find out that I did indeed get the full-time teaching gig I had applied for. So, celebration!

  3. Zen, congratulations!! That is wonderful news. Best of luck in the new position.

  4. I'll be watching the game, but if we get NESN, I won't be threading. I'm collecting research for a future blog post.

    ReplyDelete
  5. A suggestion for Mad Joe Maddon: try putting everyone in right field when Ortiz hits.

  6. It would be great if there was a blackberry Blogger application. Oh well. Just got a Blackberry today.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Actually this isn't that bad!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Nava hasn't done much in the last week or so... and he continues the trend.

  9. Gotta run take the boy to the doctor's office. Go Sox!

  13. Ish, what model BB did you get? I love my Pearl. But I don't have a data plan, don't use it for email or FB. Weird, I know, but it works for me.

I'll have to come back later for your answer.

    YAY!

  22. Hi Everyone. Crazy times here. Daughter leaves for Orlando tomorrow, house in disarray, workmen in and out. We had soot damage upstairs and the insurance company is beginning their work. Room by room cleaning, painting, and recarpeting. This will take forever.

    SCUTARO!! Let's score some runs.

    ReplyDelete
  23. remy on bunt: if you can't get it to go fair, make sure it goes foul.

We heard that and chuckled. My husband says it would be pretty hard to mess up in that case.

    ReplyDelete
  24. ugh - does not sound pleasant.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You had insurance work done with the water damage, right?

    ReplyDelete
  26. we rent - so it was the landlord, but he did get some insurance $, yes.

    ReplyDelete
  27. PAPI!!! What a beautiful swing.

  30. eastern bank inning - so i say "hey, why not put some runs in the bank?"

    BOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. The LL's insurance paid him about 1/4 of the work he did. He put in a whole new basement and bathroom.

But it took a very long time.

    ReplyDelete
  32. That pitch was fat and happy. Right down the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Mrs G, is that just an expresion, or does your insurance co actually contract the work? Don't you get a payout and contract it yourself?

    ReplyDelete
  34. The whole insurance process is strange. The adjuster has been nice enough and they are repairing/replacing just about everything. We even had to turn down some services, like cleaning all of our clothing and replacing all of the ductwork. So, no real complaints about coverage or anything. They just seem to work at a very slow pace.

My husband is counsel for the insurance company, which could complicate matters, but so far has been okay.

    ReplyDelete
  35. nesn must be training someone new on updating the count in the on-screen box. it has been wrong many times tonight, only to switch back.

    ReplyDelete
  36. L, we had options of how we wanted to handle it. The insurance company has a restoration company that they usually use. We went with them because they take care of everything. But, we also took the opportunity to upgrade a couple of areas, which we then are responsible for. It takes a little bit of coordination, but no big deal.

The payout is interesting. Right now, we have a fairly large check sitting on our dresser made payable to us and the restoration company. We then have to go back and figure our credits/overages, etc. I guess it will all work out in the end, we'll see.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sounds as painless as can be expected, which is never painless, of course

    I didn't know insurance co's did that.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Here I am in Brooklyn, NY, no Red Sox on TV. Now I know how you all feel.

It seems like the only Red Sox news I have seen in two days is about injuries. WTF?

    ReplyDelete
  39. How's the grandbaby Amy? Congratulations.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm not looking at the Yankees score until the game is over!

    ReplyDelete
  41. amy, that has been about it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks, MrsG. He is WONDERFUL! We are renting an apartment nearby to help out, but have tonight "off."

So Harv gets to watch baseball on TV, while I watch on the laptop. What a role reversal!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks, Laura, and thanks to you and Allan for your emails!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Harv just set me up with his mlb.com account.

    ReplyDelete
  45. you could have used mine, too, if you want.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think there must be something special about that first grandchild. My mom and daughter have a very special relationship, as I do with my grandmother (who is 102!).

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's a hit parade!!!!

    Gotta love it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. MrsG, how did you know about the baby? Yes, I am looking forward to sharing with the new baby. He will, however, be a Mets fan, so we will have to share other things besides baseball!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think Laura posted it on a non-game thread of JoS.

    ReplyDelete
  50. He will, however, be a Mets fan, so we will have to share other things besides baseball!

That will still work out. My father-in-law (MFY fan) selflessly gave my son a World Series Red Sox collage for Christmas after the 04 season.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Lurking while working, but popped in to say CONGRATS, AMY!!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Is Hall any better at 2B than in the outfield?

    ReplyDelete
  53. What's with these strike outs? Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  54. "mightybite" fishing lures commercial says "great gift for the holidays"

    earliest xmas ad?

    ReplyDelete
  55. I saw that ad, but in true Amy-fashion, I tuned it out. Did it really say that?

    ReplyDelete
  56. good thing his glove was BIG

    ReplyDelete
  57. That pesky Carl Crawford...

    ReplyDelete
  58. Just got in and happy to see this score and the score from the toilet.

    Go go lackster!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Quick drop-in to congratulate Amy. June is a good month to be born--in the opinion of this Sagittarius.

    ReplyDelete
  60. L (and me) to Tim: enjoyed the sparkling wine tonight. thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yeah, congratulations on the birth of Nathaniel!

Also, 'grats on the teaching job, zen.

    Good news all around tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Oh, Zen, you got the job?? That's great!! I missed that news.

I guess despite all the bad Red Sox news, there has been some good stuff for JOS these past few days. :)

And we are beating the Rays, so that's good.

    ReplyDelete
  63. How does he do that? From one knee?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Wow, Beltre!!

I worry he will hurt himself with that one knee thing.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Beltre is hitting his way out of Boston.

    ReplyDelete
  66. The Rays usually scare the shit out of me, but these guys look terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  67. June is an excellent month to be born, says Laura and Tim.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Tim has a June birthday also?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hall!

So....how DID the Rays dominate for so long this season?

    ReplyDelete
  70. How'd that pitching change work out for you, TB?

    ReplyDelete
  71. If the Red Sox make the post-season this year despite all these injuries and the slow start, then Francona should win some kind of award.

    ReplyDelete
  72. So....how DID the Rays dominate for so long this season?

Luck! I could geek out and explain this in number, but ef that. They've been lucky.

    ReplyDelete
  73. SEA - 011 113 000 - 7 12 1
    MFY - 100 001 002 - 4 8 2

    ReplyDelete
  74. So Patrick...has their luck run out? Can we count on this continuing decline?

    ReplyDelete
  75. I have no idea. They are good, and I think it's obviously a three team race.

I hope they dive bomb into fourth.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Tim's bd is 2 days before mine.

I can only post in btn innings. :)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Must we rely on Bard for every non-starter inning?

We should make a trade sooner than later. Bard needs a break.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I agree, Patrick. Having only one reliable arm in the pen is dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  79. 5 pitches for bard and atchison in the 9th.

    ReplyDelete
  80. It feels like most of the suspense in this game has been whether we're going to rip off their heads before shitting down their necks.

    ReplyDelete
  81. rip heads tonight and shit necks tomorrow?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Zumaya had a history of lightly treated elbow injuries. That said, let's not give Bard any of his own.

    ReplyDelete
  83. That's a final on the MFY game?

I was serious about not looking until it was over.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Standing O for Vlad in LA on his return as a Ranger.

Showing up Sox fans. Stay classy, LA.

    ReplyDelete
  85. What was the final score? Harv not watching so I figured it was bad...

    ReplyDelete
  86. Bad for him, good for us, that is.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Weird, I don't see it. How far up??

    ReplyDelete
  88. dave attell pitching for sox

    ReplyDelete
  89. Cue Amy in 5...4...3...2...1...

    ReplyDelete
  90. Got it. Wouldn't it have just be easier to answer my question?? :)

I am one tired person...be patient with me.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Nice catch by the boy in the stands. I love it that everyone high fives him after that.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Ughh! Let's dirty this water, and call it a day.

    ReplyDelete
  93. We have to find a way to keep our closer on the bench with a six run lead.

    ReplyDelete
  94. 8-5 we are dooooomed!! Oh no what will we do etc etc

    ReplyDelete
  95. Okay, we really need to find a way to keep our closer out of the GAME with a six run lead. Geez.

    ReplyDelete
  96. 8-5 we are dooooomed!! Oh no what will we do etc etc

    get one out?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Like I said, we need a bullpen.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Great, bring in the harbinger of dong.

I feel real good about this.

    ReplyDelete
  99. it was atchison and richardson -- they are not good. jeez.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Yes, I understand that we didn't use our best relievers. But it seems like a trade off. We saved some arms, but ended up using Pap.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Don't drink the water! It is DIRTY!

    ReplyDelete
  102. With an off-day yesterday and an off-day Thursday, why not try Atchison and Richardson, and if they don't work, bring in Bot?

    ReplyDelete
  103. Hey guys, before this ends - I'm hoping to grab my sunglasses tomorrow around 2, if you're around. If not, mailbox works!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Three.

    Dirty>>Clean.

We win, MFY lose, FKR lose. What a great night!

    ReplyDelete
  105. we will likely be home, but we'll also put them in the mailbox.

    ReplyDelete
  106. OK, I'll swing by and say hello if you're there, if not, just grab em and get the fuck outta T.O.!

    ReplyDelete
  107. Thanks for the congratulations. One job will be better than two.

    ReplyDelete
  108. L, I got the Blackberry Bold. I absolutely love it. I have the data plan so I've been using it non-stop since I got it today, hah. I used to have a crappy little flip phone so this is a huge step. Welcoming myself to 2010 today!

As for the game, it took a while but hot damn is that water dirty!

    ReplyDelete
  109. if the car is there, someone is home. (we have a vet appt and are submitting our passport applications (!), but that is in the morning.)
