G82: Orioles 6, Red Sox 1

Orioles - 000 200 022 - 6 11 0
Red Sox - 000 000 001 - 1 3 1
Matusz was dealing (7-2-0-3-8, 111), but the Sox did have a couple of scoring chances early on.

In the second, Bill Hall singled and Daniel Nava got HBP, but Gustavo Molina popped up a bunt to the pitcher, Marco Scutaro took a called third strike, and Darnell McDonald grounded to third. With one out in the fourth, Kevin Youkilis walked and went to third on Adrian Beltre's double. Then J.D. Drew struck out and Hall flied to center. (Yook's rally-killer spoiled the shutout.)

Lackey (7.1-8-4-1-7, 117) was good, except when he wasn't, and then he was as annoying as usual.

Mariano Rivera blew a save, but the Yankees beat the Blue Jays 7-6 in 10. The Rays beat the Twins 7-4. Boston falls to 1.5 GB, while Tampa Bay stays 2 GB.
Example
Brian Matusz / Lohn Lackey
Scutaro, SS
McDonald, CF
Ortiz, DH
Youkilis, 1B
Beltre, 3B
Drew, RF
Hall, 2B
Nava, LF

  1. Francona on pre-game, talking about Big Papi going to All Star Game: "I think some people owe him an apology."

  4. Perfect example of why we need stats.

  5. Last 5 years the Red Sox were at home on July 4:

    1998, 2002, 2007, 2009, 2010

(only 4 of last 12 seasons)

  10. I too think those hats are ridiculous

    ReplyDelete
  11. Have the Sox ever had a night game on July 4th?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Who is this guy on the mound for the Sox and what did they do with John Lackey?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Giving both teams the same hat is confusing, they should have a blue one for the away team.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 50 years ago today the Boston Patriots reported to training camp at UMass.

    ReplyDelete
  15. At night on 7/4?
    Seems unlikely, but maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  16. it seems like lackey has a lot of innings in which he gets the first 2 guys out, then gives up hits/runs. feels like way more than any other starter. i wonder if that's true.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Is Francona calling this game from the bench?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Holidays are usually day games. Unless it was one of those things where people got the Friday or Monday off instead of the actual July 4th. Do they do that for July 4th, or is it the one holiday that is actually always celebrated on the day itself?

  21. "Boston Patriots became New England Patriots?" Yes

    ReplyDelete
  22. Looks like Lackey beat up that mystery guy and is now wearing his own uniform.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh shit! How did that happen? 2-0!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lackey looked really good through three, but now it looks like we're back to old Dr. Suck.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Jones scores from first on a single. That's nice.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wow, Molina isn't having much of a game here. Two passed balls (one technically a WP and a popped up bunt attempt. Bleah...

    ReplyDelete
  27. yeah, beltre is so "safe and secure" at second, he doesn't fuckin' move off the base.

    fuck you, new york life.

    ReplyDelete
  28. That new New York Life crap is possibly the most irritating and dare I say Yankee-ish part of the broadcast. I hate it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. RS - do you do anything for the 4th now that you're Canadian?

    ReplyDelete
  30. now, now, maybe they are not so stupid.

  31. swisher gunned down at the plate!

    ReplyDelete
  32. i have never done anything for the 4th.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Good start to the inning by Nava. Lets see if Molina can do anything. Anything at all.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Of all the MLB hitters in history with more than 650 PA, Kevin Cash has the 7th worst OPS+. Ever!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I wonder if Francona should've just DH'd Ortiz for Molina and let Lackey hit.

Oh god... Molina just swung and missed by about 3 feet. Ugh...

    ReplyDelete
  36. It turns out that the DH has to bat for the pitcher. I did not think that was the case, but apparently, it is. Not sure if the rule has always been that way, though.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Now the inning comes down to Darnell McDonald.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My parents and I usually go on a day trip on or around the 4th, just because. This year we'll be doing it next weekend. Not much happening for me today.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The DH has to hit for the pitcher? Really? I had no idea. That's a pretty stupid and unnecessarily restrictive rule.

    ReplyDelete
  40. TOR 5-3, nice to see Hughes doing so well.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Someone at SoSH quoted the rule, but it still sounded slightly vague (or I did not read it carefully enough). I always thought the DH could be used for any position player the manager chose.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hughes showing that All-Star form.

    ReplyDelete
  43. STFU whoever that is in the booth.

    ReplyDelete
  44. According to
Wikipedia at least, you're right, RS.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Matusz has 8 Ks on the day, but he's only K'd four guys: Ortiz (3), Drew (2), Scutaro (2), and Molina (1).

    ReplyDelete
  46. remy likes the sponsor's product! surprise!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Four times a team elected not to start a DH:

Ferguson Jenkins on October 2, 1974 for the Rangers at Minnesota

Ken Holtzman for the A's against the Angels on September 27, 1975

Ken Brett for the White Sox on July 6, 1976 at Boston

Ken Brett for the White Sox on September 23, 1976 against the Twins

  48. Drew would have a better shot at Matusz if he hit right handed.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I wonder if the O's will go to their bullpen now though?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Samuel is an interim manager, he needs to win. He's not going to his pen unless Matusz's arm falls off or he's specifically ordered to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  51. oh god -- the jewhater from the toilet is gonna sing GBA at fenway?

    ReplyDelete
  52. DO just said Ronan Tynan is going to do God Bless America at the bottom of the inning. Fuck that guy.

    ReplyDelete
  53. RS - do you do anything for the 4th now that you're Canadian?

For the Fourth, we celebrate Canada Day 3 days earlier.

So what is the answer re the DH? Has to be for pitcher or can be for any player?

    ReplyDelete
  54. This is WEIRD!! Ronan Tynan doing GBA at Fenway!

    ReplyDelete
  55. They are STILL pimping Ronan Tynan?? That guy is way past his sell-by date.

    ReplyDelete
  56. So what is the answer re the DH? Has to be for pitcher or can be for any player?

Has to be the pitcher. I linked to Wikipedia a few comments up.

    ReplyDelete
  57. That new New York Life crap is possibly the most irritating and dare I say Yankee-ish part of the broadcast. I hate it.

I have a post coming up that you may enjoy. Sadly, there is nothing Yankeeish about it. The Red Sox are as bad as anyone when it comes to the endless IN-GAME ads.

    ReplyDelete
  58. This is WEIRD!! Ronan Tynan doing GBA at Fenway!

Shoot me now. Shoot me now with a very big gun.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thanks for the info. I'm at work, can't thread or go to links very easily.

(I have to read blogs & thread on my own netbook, instead of the firm's computer... very annoying.)

    ReplyDelete
  60. I wish a lot of fans would complain to the Sox about Tynan... but I know they won't.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Fuck Tynan. Never again, please.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I like his voice and I like how it feels like a big Fuck You to the Yankees to have Tynan here... other than that, it just felt strange and wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  63. It is not a FU to the Yankees, it is an FU to Sox fans, especially all the Jewish fans.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I had forgotten about that.

    ReplyDelete
  65. How soon will Wagner or Brown come off the DL at Pawtucket?

    ReplyDelete
  66. GBA isn't much easier to sing than 'Star Spangled Banner.' If we have to have a national anthem (with all due respect to Howard Zinn's piece on wmtc today), it ought to be the easy to sing and minimally nationalistic 'America the Beautiful.'

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm gonna vote thumbs down on Tynan. Go back to Yankee Stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  68. "I like how it feels like a big Fuck You to the Yankees"

Having Bucky Dent throw out the first ball on Opening Day would be a fuck-you to the Yankees too but...

    ReplyDelete
  69. Well to be honest I didn't think about the negative aspect of Tynan until Laura brought it up. Can't wait to see a big FU to the Yankees on the field.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'm shocked Francona is leaving Lackey out there... and wow, that looked like my adult team. Ugh. Brutal D there.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I need to learn all of this for where I am planning to become a citizen of;
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVYsVuYI3Lw

    ReplyDelete
  72. Why is Lackey still out there?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Didn't I read that the singing of GBA at Yankee Stadium led to enforced patriotic solemnity?

    ReplyDelete
  74. O Canada is the national athem. GBA is not.

John's nomination for US anthem is good. Even better IMO would be This Land Is Your Land.

    ReplyDelete
  75. John, I assume you've seen my own essay on how NYY fans used to try to enforce my patriotism themselves. I'm sure if I were a guy, someone would have hit me.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I could maybe support national anthems if they had no words.

    ReplyDelete
  77. No one ever hit me. Am I not a man?

    ReplyDelete
  78. I keep score of baseball games with three different coloured pens. Am I not a man?

    ReplyDelete
  79. This isn't looking promising...

    ReplyDelete
  80. No one ever hit me. Am I not a man?

    Sorry about that. :)

The worst of it was at playoff and WS games post-9/11. You weren't there.

    ReplyDelete
  81. National Anthems are harmless in many countries. Nationalism from the US... not so much.

    ReplyDelete
  82. However, I have had people scream at me from a section or two away -- during the anthem. So that's something.

Now that I think about it, that was the second game of the 2005 season. CI hit a walk-off HR, but the MFY fans around me were still not in the best of moods.

    ReplyDelete
  83. During the games I'm thinking of, the hostility was very intense.

This is not our day. And the Jays are useless.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I hate losing, but this really sucks shit.

    Happy 4th, everyone!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Sure, thanks, I'm happy to be called a mensch.

That was the ultimate compliment to a child in my family, long ago.

And recently Allan and I were trying to remember what ballplayer was known for having a overly large head.
