G116: Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 5

Red Sox - 002 020 010 - 5 11 0
Blue Jays - 000 101 004 - 6 12 0
John Lackey (8-8-3-1-4, 98) was on his way towards a complete game victory when he allowed a home run to Jose Bautista start the bottom of the ninth. With a 5-3 lead, Terry Francona called on Jonathan Papelbon.

Papelbon had nothing: Vernon Wells doubled to deep right, Adam Lind singled up the middle (5-4), and pinch-runner DeWayne Wise stole second -- those were Bot's first three pitches, by the way.

Aaron Hill singled; the line drive hit off his Bot's right foot and rolled onto the infield grass, but he stayed in the game. (I was hoping an injury (or "injury") would give Daniel Bard, who had been up in the eighth, time to come in and get warm.) Travis Snider struck out, but Edgar Encarnacion doubled down the left field line (5-5). Lyle Overbay was intentionally walked ... and out came Tito.

It was up to Bard, with no margin for error. Fred Lewis lofted a fly ball to center field. Bard instinctively stuck up his finger, as pitchers do on pop-ups, and then it slowly wilted and his arm sank. There was no chance Jacoby Ellsbury could throw Hill out -- and the Toronto's comeback was complete.

Ellsbury and Jed Lowrie pulled off a double steal in the third and both eventually scored. J.D. Drew and David Ortiz hit solo home runs in the fifth. In the eighth, Salty hit his second double of the afternoon and Darnell McDonald followed a triple, his second in two games.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia makes his first start for Boston after five games in Pawtucket and two innings as a sub last night.

Peter Abraham, Globe:
Red Sox fans buried Theo Epstein for standing still at the trade deadline. ...
I was away at the end of last month, but is this true? Buried him? Really? Considering the players coming back from injury need some positions to play, there was very little Epstein could have done. And even for probable helpful hands like Scott Downs, the price was insanely high.

Tonight: Yankees/Royals, 8 PM.
Example
August 12:

1903 - Joe Stanley of the Boston Nationals hits his first major league home run‚ a grand slam off Chicago's Jock Menefee. Stanley will hit his only other home run on September 26, 1905‚ and it will also be a grand slam.

1990 - After a rain delay of 7:12, the White Sox-Rangers game is finally postponed.

1995 - In a 10-10 tie in the 11th inning, the Dodgers have the potential winning run at third and LA's Mitch Webster swings at a pitch in the dirt. Pittsburgh's rookie catcher Angelo Encarnacion scoopes up the ball with his mask. When Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda cites Rule 7.05, which awards a runner two bases if a fielder uses his mask to touch a thrown ball, the umpires allow the winning run to score.

  1. I think "buried" is incorrect. "Questioned" maybe...

    ReplyDelete
  2. I had the same reaction to "buried", Red Sock. It seemed wildly over the top, but then I admit I don't live in Boston so I haven't been listening to WEEI at all.

  4. O-kay blue-jays. You guys are always good for a pick me up. Lose again, now, don't let me down.

    ReplyDelete
  5. On that foul back, I thought someone lost a finger! (it was the umps counter).

    ReplyDelete
  6. BTW, I have been in Boston and reading sports media and the like, and nobody was "burying" Epstein over the trade deadline.

People are generally frustrated about the construction of the team but they understood overpaying for a guy like Scott Downs wasn't worth it.

I think if the team doesn't improve this offseason in the form of a re-vamped bullpen and another middle-of-the-lineup basher, then there will be major frustration next year. But for now, people are wearily tolerant.

    ReplyDelete
  7. hey redsock!

I was supposed to come up to Toronto for this series, then I remembered I had no money!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Note to Lackey: Don't be shitty.

    ReplyDelete
  9. i think the roster construction was pretty damn good, but the injuries fucked it all up.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I actually agree, I think this team would have been a definite contender if healthy. Unfortunately we'll never know.

    ReplyDelete
  11. It was to be epic Toronto road trip and now it's been epic no money summer. Woo hoo!

    ReplyDelete
  12. nice work, lackey. more of that, pls.

    ReplyDelete
  13. road trip: tim and i are seeing the pawsox in buffalo a week from monday (8/23).

    ReplyDelete
  14. There goes JD Drew selfishly getting on base like an asshole again.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Joe, you're talking like we're out of contention. 3 1/2 behind in the wild card race...still some hope, no?

    ReplyDelete
  16. and he did not even swing the bat - double asshole.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh no fair, I have to miss a gamethread with Joe Grav in it! I'm watching but can't thread for a while. Allan is reading choice comments to me. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Let me ask you something, you folks who think we have a chance at the post-season.

Do you really, truly think that? Or are you feigning optimism because you enjoy that or feel you should or whatever reason?

I'll be back to read answers later, if anyone wants to share.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Come on Molina. That's what training rooms are for!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Of course I really think we have a chance. Why wouldn't we?

I'd put the probability at around 15%. Have not checked the fangraphs info on the same subject in months.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I really do think that the Red Sox have a *chance* at making the postsaeason, although I wouldn't bet any money on it.

I think the pieces are there to get on a run if our starters get on a big roll. It's a longshot, but a shot.

And remaining at least mildly optimistic about "the pursuit" of getting back into the race has made me excited to watch these games every day. This is a very likeable team, so I'm enjoying the ride here.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm going where the numbers are. In mid-August, down 3.5 in the wildcard and 5 in the division, I think it's possible. Still work that needs to be done, but I'm just going on trends and possibilities.

    ReplyDelete
  23. that salty double is making me thirsty.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If J. D. Drew was actually out there playing baseball this afternoon he could have scored on that pop BH.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Apparently, Elijah Dukes is playing OF along with fellow nutter Carl Everett for the Independent League Newark Bears. Birds of a feather and all.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That was a fucking strong throw.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The same can be said for Beltre's throw from his knees.

    ReplyDelete
  28. If Beltre completed that play for an out, it would have been a highlight of the year... wow

    ReplyDelete
  29. You mean there's such a thing as a catcher who doesn't throw like Johnny Damon? Does not compute

    ReplyDelete
  30. The Red Sox writers are doing Adrian Beltre facts.

Peter Abraham: "Adrian Beltre doesn't like anybody touching his head because he's afraid they'll break their hands."

Rob Bradford: "Fear itself is afraid of Adrian Beltre."

    ReplyDelete
  31. Gordon Edes: "Adrian Beltre hates people touching his head because he once fractured his skull putting on his batting helmet."

Bradford: "Adrian Beltre hasn't been hit by a pitch once this year. The pitch has been hit by Adrian Beltre four times, however."

    ReplyDelete
  32. when we clinch the pennant, the team is going to play beltre's head like a bongo drum.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sean McAdam: "Adrian Beltre doesn't use a cup --- to drink hot coffee."

    ReplyDelete
  34. I just think it's hilarious the writers are getting in on this. On Twitter it's called #adrianbeltrefacts

    ReplyDelete
  35. i am not missing him at all, but anyone know where o'b is?

    ReplyDelete
  36. O'B did the ESPN game last night in Texas

    ReplyDelete
  37. He did Yankees/Rangers last night on ESPN, so he's probably hanging out there waiting for the Red Sox to come down.

    ReplyDelete
  38. rats, was hoping he got fired.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I think it's time for run(s), innit.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Now, that's makin' some shit happen. Second double steal recently.

Let's see Ade scare the ball outta the park.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wow! that Ortiz ball was UP. Good pitch in un-hittable territory. On the replay I still can't understand how he pulled his hands in and let the bat come around full speed.

Ug. 2 out, 2 on, 2 in. Looks like last nights 5th inning again.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Abraham: "The ball that hit Adrian Beltre in the groin last season was put in protective custody by the police just in case."

    ReplyDelete
  43. two nights of listening to jon rish -- and he makes stuff up. maybe not sterlingesque, but fiction.

said lowrie went behind the bag for that grounder. he did not. not really all that close to the bag, just scooted to his left.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks for the answers, guys.

If we're talking 15% or thereabouts, then yes, I think they have a chance, too.

I'm still really enjoying the team and the season. I'm not angry or bitter or anything like that. When I say I don't have hope about the post-season, it's not like I'm stomping off or not watching.

I just wouldn't bet any money on it, as Joe said.

Well, maybe a loonie. I can lose a loonie if I have to.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It's not as if the 2010 Red Sox were/are a bad team. They are a team mired with injuries and that could happen to anyone. They had a very good team constructed and bad luck happened. Oh well!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Aren't they just recycling the Chuck Norris bits that can be tweeked for baseball?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Pretty much. The writers are bored today.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Encanacion. Footwork was key to that one.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Now they're just getting absurd.

Bradford: "Adrian Beltre would never be up for arbitration. Arbitration would be up for Adrian Beltre."

    ReplyDelete
  50. several years ago, sosh was doing that for jack cust. highly amusing.

    ReplyDelete
  51. ellsbury grounds to short, escobar scoots to his left, and all rish says is "hit right at the shortstop". very similar play, but no excited "behind the bag" for that one!

    ReplyDelete
  52. come on, lackey. remember: do not be shitty.

    ReplyDelete
  53. They are going to Anaheim tonight... :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. "There are no steroids in baseball. Just players Chuck Norris has breathed on."

    ReplyDelete
  55. PAPI DONG!!!!

    We be sweeping, baby!

    ReplyDelete
  56. That makes 7 25+ home run seasons for Ortiz... Ties with Jim Rice for second-most 25+ HR seasons on the Red Sox. From Ian Browne.

    ReplyDelete
  57. flo needs a double and a triple for the cycle.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Trivia on NESN: Before Saltalamacchia, who had the longest name in Red Sox history?

Not sure of whether they said last name or full name, but if it's last name my guess would be Bret Saberhagen. Probably a sucky guess.

    ReplyDelete
  59. ish - i wondered that too.

    ?

    garciaparra = 11 letters

    ReplyDelete
  60. The answer: Ossee Schreckengost

    ReplyDelete
  61. Golden Sombrero is peaking over the horizon for 'Mr Bill' today.

    ReplyDelete
  62. When I used to read Jayson Stark, he had a lot of stuff about longest names - esp if two guys with really long names were facing each other, pitcher and batter.

Schoenweis (sp?) was one of them... and someone else with an S... argh, can't think of it now. Trying to come up with it...

    ReplyDelete
  63. Ossee Schreckengost

When I see that, I can only say, my last name is not that bad after all.

    ReplyDelete
  64. well, okay. but let's stop doing that. too many innings left.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Nice dp there. We could use a few more runs for INsurance.

    ReplyDelete
  66. He also had a shortened last name of... Schreck!

    ReplyDelete
  67. 9 career home runs for Schreckengost... 31 career triples.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I guess "Doug Mientdsjhfvheikcjhssh" does not qualify.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Nor would David Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaardsma.

    ReplyDelete
  70. double on pitch 77, but it's time ot get the pen busy.

    ReplyDelete
  71. hall hopes to avoid the golden shower.

    ReplyDelete
  72. 'Saltalamacchia'

    Catching up.

Longest names, I used Garciaparra as a guide to how wide the name column in my html score card needed to be - Saltalamacchia has been in the majors since '07 but I'd never heard of him. Luckily I stretched the box later, for other reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  73. A double for Saltalamacchia (still had it in cut and paste). ;)

    ReplyDelete
  74. Never heard of Salty? I guess that's what you get for not having cable.

    ReplyDelete
  75. If you're Remy, it's actually Saltamacchia.

    ReplyDelete
  76. bard up, but not throwing hard

    ReplyDelete
  77. Thought of it: Spooneybarger!

Also someone named Schoendeist, not sure from what era, will look it up.

    Long names.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Sorry Red, I misspelled your last name.

    Schoendienst

    ReplyDelete
  79. lackey at 91 (i think). CG, pls.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Remy just omits syllables as he sees fit.

Really, he's lucky he can speak at all.

    ReplyDelete
  81. If you're Remy, it's actually Saltamacchia.

I'm confused. Who's Remy and why no 'la'?

    ReplyDelete
  82. didn't remy refuse to try to say his name last year? went right to salty.

    salta-la-mocky-er.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Ah I got it. Remy is an NESN announcer.

    Salty's good.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Lackey's coming back out for the 9th. Sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  85. 3-4-5 hitters
    bautista
    wells
    lind

    ReplyDelete
  86. Yup, he did. Don was joking about it with him last night. Remy refused to learn how to pronounce Saltalamacchia's last name.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Long, high arching, crappy throw from Snider in left to first, only thing worse was the Rogers Sportsnet director's choice of cameras...

The world sucks right now... what else can I complain about???

It's only three runs, ot's only three runs, it's only three runs.

    :)

    ReplyDelete
  88. 3-2 Bautista! we need a 3 run HR. NOW!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Who saw it coming that Jose Bautista would be leading the majors in home runs?

    ReplyDelete
  90. well, now all the idiots can be happy they saw a jays dong. now nail it down.

    ReplyDelete
  91. should have done more than bluff a bunt.

    ReplyDelete
  92. buffyvisions graphic shows bot with more saves than anyone, including fruitbat, from 2006-2010. (180 to 171 over rivera, i think)

    ReplyDelete
  93. Happy idiots. Toronto baseball fans.

Glad you're finally coming around to my point of view.

'Provincial' just isn't cruel enough. Happy Idiots's though works quite well...

Oh good Papelbon... Oh no, Vernon Wells

    ReplyDelete
  94. i don't think my view of the fans at skydome has ever changed.

    ReplyDelete
  95. i don't think my view of the fans at skydome has ever changed.

And you didn't get it from Michael Holloway.

Jays fans suck. We started going to games here in 2003. We saw it then and we have seen it every time we've been there.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hoping this Papelbon Inconvenience doesn't turn into a Papelbon Nightmare.

    ReplyDelete
  97. same old shit from papelbon (/amy)

    ReplyDelete
  98. seriously - is anyone up or is it bot or bust?

    ReplyDelete
  99. Hoping this Papelbon Inconvenience doesn't turn into a Papelbon Nightmare.

Exactly. The difference between a hiccup and a vomit.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I don't think anyone's warming. Brian Tallet's up for the Jays.

    ReplyDelete
  101. All of this shit on 6 pitches so far.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I don't usually ask for Ks, but please, Bot, K K K.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Holy shit. That's a new way for Pap to screw with us.

Gee Hi Tito! Nice to fucking see you.

    ReplyDelete
  104. pull him as hurt & bard in

    PLS!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. maybe should have stayed with lackey at 5-3 and 98 pitches.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Can't even go for a fucking DP here.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Just as I say that, they show the Sox infield in DP depth.

    ReplyDelete
  108. i don't think my view of the fans at skydome has ever changed.

nEVER SEEN IT EXPRESSED THEN... gLAD TO SEE WE ARE ALL IN AGREEMENT.

    ReplyDelete
  109. castig says bard up now -- just in time to be ready to walk in to the dugout after bot blows it

    ReplyDelete
  110. Strikeout... Now a DP please!

    ReplyDelete
  111. THE CURRENT GOD, OUR LESSER SELVES SALVATION IS AT THE PLATE - THE ROOKIE SNIDER.

    Ks OH WELL.

    ReplyDelete
  112. edwin 1 for 1 vs bot with a dong

    ReplyDelete
  113. NESN's audio hiccups, making it sound like they bleeped out the "Jays" in Blue Jays. "...against the Toronto Blue ____..."

    ReplyDelete
  114. They won't pull Papelbon while the Red Sox are still leading.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Michael, it's one thing to have someone on a gamethread cheering for the other team, it's another to have them USING ALL CAPS. Geez.

    ReplyDelete
  116. But which Tito is sitting in the dugout right now?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Sorry to be nitpicky, but it's hard to ignore!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Somewhere Amy is getting indigestion, but is not sure why.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I still don't understand the fascination with chatting in a game thread for the opposing team. There aren't any Blue Jays threads anywhere? Twitter?

    Meanwhile: FUCK.

    ReplyDelete
  120. I say that as a general observation, by the way. Well, both things.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I still don't understand the fascination with chatting in a game thread for the opposing team. There aren't any Blue Jays threads anywhere? Twitter?

With you 100% on that. No comprendo.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Playoff Assassin Tito (almost)!

    ReplyDelete
  123. Ugly:

    2B
    1B, SB
    1B
    K
    2B
    BBI

Let's go, Bard, you flithy out-getting bastard!

    ReplyDelete
  124. no chance with lbj's arm.

    fuckin a

    ReplyDelete
  125. fucking drinkable water. they salvaged one. thank you, papelbon.

    ReplyDelete
  126. I anxiously await Amy's arrival.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Good game.

    Papelbon is SO inconsistent.

But I like that face he puts on when he's looking in, like something from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

    ReplyDelete
  128. That was one fucking awesome comeback by the Jays, though. But this one hangs over Papelbon's head. Hard to second-guess taking Lackey out for the guy who's supposed to be a good closer in a two run game.

    ReplyDelete
  129. ALL CAPS

That was a mistake I'm scoring on another tab and flipping back and forth. No diss intended.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Ish said...

the fascination with chatting in a game thread for the opposing team

No fascination, the people here are more important than any team, or league, or other 'thing'.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Game thread up-dates were really slow in posting for me in the second half of the game.

    Anyone else experience that?

    ReplyDelete
  132. I still don't understand the fascination with chatting in a game thread for the opposing team. There aren't any Blue Jays threads anywhere? Twitter?

We are just beyond awesome, I suppose.

I don't get it either. I'd never do it, but it's his choice.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Game thread up-dates were really slow in posting for me in the second half of the game.

Maybe I was a tad slower in putting comments through? I don't think so, but maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I didn't notice a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  135. God fucking dammit.

Amy's worst fears...confirmed. 9th inning the only part I saw on TV. A disgrace.

    ReplyDelete
  136. "Maybe I was a tad slower in putting comments through? I don't think so, but maybe."

Ah I see I thought you might open up comments during threads. That must be a lot of work...

No, I was thinking it was my ISP, or Google.

    ReplyDelete
  137. "I don't get it either. I'd never do it, but it's his choice."

I was feeling pretty bummed out at the end off this thread as the losing turned to expelling the nay sayer...

But, it made me think of this metaphore:

What if I was sitting at Fenway, or you at 'The Dum', would we experience the game with a virtual wall between us, never glancing over 'there', certainly not talking ball or anything... .

It reminds me of a thing we all take for granted in this culture: the fences we put up in our back yards between us and our neighbors. We even do it collectively; each neighbor throwing in half the expenses to build the fence that will separate them.

It brings up I my mind the difference between tolerating and accepting. There is a huge difference. Tolerance verges on violence, while acceptance verges on love.

Why are there no words in the language in between those two. I ask you.

I think we think we're all much more advanced than we really are. Cultural customs keep most of the a-socials and the psychopaths in line; the rest just want to fit in because they're scared of standing out. 'Civilization' it turns out is a very delicate construct and likely why it falls apart every 50 years of so (war).

    Michael

    ReplyDelete
  138. I cannot extend rooting for rival teams into a cultural metaphor of identity, separation, cooperation and the cosmic onness of the universe.

If I walked into an NYY bar in Red Sox cap and t-shirt while a NYY-Bos game was on TV, and openly cheered for the Sox, I would not expect to be treated well, or for people to embrace me as a friend and neighbour - even if they might in other circumstances.

Considering Allan and I lived together for 16 years as Red Sox fan and Yankee fan, I oughta know something about this.

My backyard has a fence around it, as do the yards of my neighbours. They enjoy their yards and I enjoy mine. That doesn't mean we hate each other or that anything is verging on violence! In fact quite the opposite. They have their lives - with their own families, friends, and enemies - and I have mine.

I'm not going to see this as a comment on humanity or my compassion or anything else. To me that is a ludicrous extrapolation.

Everyone on this thread is a good, compassionate person who cares about their sister and brother human beings. But gamethreads are about baseball, and friends who share a common tie - rooting for a particular team - hanging out together. Someone rooting for the opposing team is going to be received differently.

That's all there is to it, IMO - nothing more meaningful than that.

As Ish and I suggested earlier, wouldn't it simply be more fun for you if you hung with people who were rooting for the same team?

    ReplyDelete
  139. I was feeling pretty bummed out at the end off this thread as the losing turned to expelling the nay sayer...

Also, when and how were you expelled? Allan and I moderate comments, and every comment of yours was put through. I read through the end of the thread, and I see no antagonism against you whatsoever.

Please tell me how "the naysayer" was "expelled".

    ReplyDelete
  140. no chance with lbj's arm.

    Figures you blame LBJ!

    ReplyDelete
  141. "I cannot extend rooting for rival teams into a cultural metaphor of identity, separation, cooperation and the cosmic onness of the universe."

    I can.

The lowest common denominator (a sports bar full of drunk people verging on mob behavior) is behavior I've struggled against all my life. I'm not sure where it comes from, perhaps I saw Henry Fonda in "The Ox-Bow Incident" when I was too young to remember.

I think I see that in you as well, when I read your blog.

    Yes, privacy is important.

My comment was not intended as a 'comment on humanity or your compassion', it was not about you at all, it was a very broad philosophical outline. I say again, if we were sitting nearby one another at 'Sky Dum', we would most likely wind up talking baseball or politics.

Everyone on this thread is a good, compassionate person who cares about their sister and brother human beings.

I find mobs annoying and I understand that people love to experience that connectedness. I don't find it fun hanging with people who are rooting for a cultural artifact produced by a corporation - or put another way think just like I do. There's lots of places where that happens in a culture - too many imho.

"Please tell me how "the naysayer" was "expelled"."

    Perhaps 'expelled' was too strong.

The topic thread could have gone a number of ways: more bile directed at Papelbon, or at the baseball gods for that funny infield base hit off Papalbon foot... that as soon as it bounced I knew he wasn't going to be able to find, or 'well, sweeps are rare, the Jay's were likely to win one of the three, we shoud be happy to have won 2 of 3.

But the thread went another way, asking what kind of brain a threader cheering for the other team must have. An discussion of the essential qualities of the 'other'; 'he doesn't think like we, here do, weirdness...'.

Instead of celebrating a good game and a win that wasn't really a win at all (a lost series), I was left defending my presence in the thread.

But, this discussion came out of that, so it was worth it. :)

  143. Michael:

What in the world are you on about?

*All* of your comments went through. All of *everyone's* comments went through.

You are welcome to post here at any time. However, I do not expect anyone to censor her/himself when it comes to expressing frustration with the Jays simply because you are here. Likewise, no one should go out of his way to purposely annoy you. I see no evidence that happened today.

Can you restate your issues in simple, direct language?
