Scott Atchison (7th/8th) and Jonathan Papelbon (9th) retired the last nine Oakland batters. Bot struck out the side, all looking.

1912 - Cleveland needs only 11 innings to sweep a doubleheader from the Red Sox. The first game is called because of rain after five innings with the Naps up 9-3. The rain stops and the second game is called because of darkness after six innings with Cleveland ahead 6-0.
1979 - Carl Yastrzemski's eighth inning single off New York's Jim Beattie is his 3,000th career hit. Boston beats the Yankees 9-2 at Fenway. Yaz finishes his career with 3,419 hits, the most in Red Sox history, 765 more than #2 Ted Williams (2,654).

Allan, I'm sure you can have the answer for me in no time.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the Sox record this year when ahead after six innings?
What was the record last year?

Remy thinks manatees are called "horse fish"... yeah, that's close to sea cow.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff. I've gotta learn you to do b-ref searches like that!
ReplyDeleteumm... learn HOW to do searches like that.
ReplyDeleteThanks Allan. My husband and I are discussing pitching vs. offense woes this year.
ReplyDeleteThat was his question.
B-ref?
I agree RSDH. I tried a few times before I gave up and just asked Allan.
ReplyDeleteIt is under the gray "Scoring" tab here. Sometimes it's hard to remember where everything is. Every so often, I wander onto a page and am amazed at what I find. (Great minor league stats under "Other".)
ReplyDeletebeckett throws to first, nesn switches to a camera on beltre on the infield dirt across the diamond.
ReplyDeleteThat's an informative page. Thanks Allan. I tried to do it by search. That didn't work.

Hi, all. I may actually get to watch some baseball! We just got home, have to unpack and get dinner going.
ReplyDeleteMrsG, I cannot figure out how to use BRef either. Way too many options and numbers for this brain. Or at least I lack the time and patience to figure it out. Definitely easier to ask Allan. :)
We are in DC getting ready to go to the Skins/Cowboys game. So we'll miss most of this game.
ReplyDeleteSo how do we interpret that statistic? Does it mean the bullpen has been less effective this year, as I tend to think? Or is it not statistically significant? Or does it mean the starter has blown it after the 6th inning?
ReplyDeleteMaybe the question is what the record was after seven innings, since it is rare that any starter goes 8 or 9 innings these days. Not that I have a clue how to do that search.
one year to the next, i'd say insignificant. how does it vary over 10-20 seasons both with the sox and other teams?
ReplyDeleteweaker offense + bad starters/pen will = tight games in later innings and thus greater opportunity to lose a lead.
i wonder if we could get W/L after 6 innings when:
up by 1
up by 2
up by 3, etc.
This starter may not make it out of the third....
ReplyDeleteBB-BB-BB-BBeckett
ReplyDeleteWell, the game's official now. We've walked in a run.
ReplyDeletei wonder if we could get W/L after 6 innings when:

Well, "we" can't. Perhaps YOU can. :)
Lucky Beckett. Phew.
ReplyDeleteMaybe that stuff is on BRef. Or maybe you have to go through box scores one at a time and count games as you go.
ReplyDeleteOh, JD..........
way to groove one, josh.
ReplyDeletesigh.
ReplyDeletedo a doctorly thing!
ReplyDeletea doctorly stroll. Let's seem some fire. make up for that lazy shit.

certainly too early to count any chickens, but it would be nice to win this one.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing drew has something on his mind other than baseball. sloppy sloppy from mr. collected.
ReplyDeletejust get the 3rd out for fucks sake.
ReplyDelete"whooohoooo, thank you!" says emma at the inning's end.
ReplyDeletewell, well, well...red sox up, that's good.
ReplyDeletewuertzberger....great beer.
ReplyDeletescratch that.
ReplyDelete"wuerzburger" is what its called.
For the record, I am here to see if Papelbon can get the save. Have to leave in ten minutes so he'd better do it quickly.

OK, dirty water! At least we avoided another sweep.
ReplyDeleteGood thing you don't have access to the postgame show on NESN... Tom Caron's guest tonight is........ Nick Cafardo! *hangs self*
ReplyDeleteI'd probably avoid the post-game show anyway, except for the interview room segments.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Dr. Nick, here he is today, writing about free agents, hometown discounts and players opting to sign long-term deals during their arb years:
"Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis could have gone into free agency rather than take a long-term deal from the Red Sox for less, but both of them love the team, the city, the atmosphere, and the medical care, so why give up all that to make a few extra bucks somewhere else ..."
a friend's facebook status:
ReplyDelete"Met a drunk Jose Bautista at Bier Market. Good news, Jays fans - I asked him how many dingers he'd hit this year, and he said 66!"
