Red Sox - 030 000 020 - 5 6 0Lester (8-3-1-3-12, 112) struck out 10+ batters for the fourth consecutive start and the kids in the lineup carried the offense.
Mariners - 000 000 100 - 1 4 2
Lester has now posted double digits in strikeouts 14 times, all but one of them coming in the last two seasons. He struck out 10+ in three straight starts last year (May 31, June 6, 12). Before tonight, he had fanned an even 10 on each of August 27, and September 1 and 6.
In the second inning, Adrian Beltre singled and took third on Jed Lowrie's double. Josh Reddick's groundout scored one run, then Daniel Nava and Lars Anderson each hit RBI doubles. After Marco Scutaro walked to begin the eighth, Ryan Kalish homered to right-center.
The Rays beat the Yankees 1-0 in 11 innings to move into first place in the East. Reid Brignac led off the bottom of the 11th with a home run off Sergio Mitre to give the Rays their first ever 1-0 walk-off and the team's first extra-inning victory by that score. The expected duel between Sabathia (8-2-0-2-9, 119) and Price (8-3-0-2-4, 114) lived up to its billing. The Yankees have lost four in a row and seven of their last eight games.
Boston is now 7.5 GB Tampa Bay in the East and 7 GB New York in the WC -- with 18 games, including six against the Yankees, to play.Jon Lester / Doug Fister
Lefty Rich Hill is up from Pawtucket and will join the Sox in Seattle. Hill pitched in 19 games for the PawSox, including six starts, and had a 3.74 ERA. Hill has played five seasons, four with the Cubs and one with Baltimore.Scutaro, 2B

Up top: Yankees/Rays (Sabathia/Price), 7 PMSeptember 13:
1946 - The Red Sox clinch the pennant by beating Cleveland 1-0. Boston gets its run on the only inside-the-park home run of Ted Williams's career.
1993 - The Astros/Rockies in Colorado is postponed when the Denver area gets between 5-8 inches of snow. The day before, it was 92 degrees. The snow melts the following day.
1997 - The Mets are down to their last strike in the bottom of the ninth, trailing the Expos 6-0. But they rally and tie the game when Carl Everett hits a grand slam. In the 11th, Bernard Gilkey hits a three-run dong for a 9-6 Mets win.
Took a look at the W-L contest entries and we can write off just about everyone on the list.
ReplyDelete98 wins -- my pick for 2010 -- is possible only if the Sox go 19-0 the rest of the way!
I'd say it's between the bottom two entries:
11-8 = Jeff R's 90-72
10-9 = Lord Lynch's 89-73
There are two entries at 93 wins and since the Sox have scored only 718 runs -- and are unlikely to score 132 more runs in 19 games (that's 6.9 per) -- Matt M would be the winner if they go 15-4.
Finishing with 79-88, 91 or 92 wins will save me the trouble of coming up with a prize this year.

Thanks for the W-L contest update. That would be pretty impressive if every single one of us was wrong. Of course I don't think anyone saw the massive spate of injuries that would descend upon this team like a plague of locusts.
ReplyDeleteJeff and Lynch should be disqualified for being such negative nancys. I don't care if their bets end up being optimistic.
ReplyDeleteI was going to go with 89, then decided not to enter because of that. It was either 89 or 106. I like to be off the charts one way or the other.

ReplyDeleteBartlett trying to bring in a pair.
ReplyDeleteSo did that annoying heckler at the Trop die, or what?
ReplyDelete0-0 after 8.
ReplyDeleteRegarding ish's comment in the other thread about it being possible, I totally agree and would buy into it if the red sox were a better team. I stopped making up scenarios about a week ago because I realized that this team just isn't good enough to live up to my wacky expectations.
ReplyDeleteBut that doesn't mean I'll stop watching or rooting for it to happen!
Except this series, won't be around for these games since the exam is tomorrow - thursday. Well, maybe an inning or two.
ReplyDeletetim: sportsnet says it will join the sox game in progress at 10:30 on 76, so if ei screws us, check that out.
ReplyDeletein the 10th in tb...
Like Laura, I did not enter this year because I had bad vibes. I did not want to be so obviously pessimistic from the get go, and I obviously hoped I would be wrong so why bet against my own best interest?
ReplyDeletenesn in 478!
ReplyDeletecome october, the rogers complaint blog will be up and running, and feature my full detailed letter to them, complaining about all of the problems i have with the way they run their TV operations.
ReplyDeleteone of the football games yesterday was on in HD on one channel - when i tuned to it, it was a BLACK SCREEN! for 3 hours! worked fine on a buddy's TV in toronto though.
mfy caught stealing 3rd by pitcher! 0-0, bot 10.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the exam, Tim!
ReplyDeleteI will be here for a bit, but way too tired to last for the duration.
So did that annoying heckler at the Trop die, or what?
ReplyDeleteIn '03 Todd Walker was his designated hecklee - my brother named him "the Walker stalker" and I've called him that ever since. But yeah, haven't seen or heard him since actual other people started showing up at the Trop.
friend of mine is in grad school. her prof has this thing where each of them have to bring in some sort of theme song, she'll then make a mix CD of them for group work sessions. I've been drafted to assist with her theme song.
ReplyDeleteI'm still rooting for "Killer Queen".
she's dynamite with a laser beam?
ReplyDeleteThe Rockies are doing that thing they do again..
ReplyDeleteXactly! I love that line.

ReplyDeleteThanks Amy, looking forward to thursday at 1 (and moreso, 7!)
ReplyDeletemmm. siddown, russ.
ReplyDeleteloaded for rays, 2-2 count ...
ReplyDeleteK. shit. on to the 11th..
ReplyDeleteI'm quite frankly disappointed that the starters aren't pitching into the 11th in TB. C'mon Maddon! Go all Dusty Baker on Price's tender young arm!
ReplyDeleteTim, I agree with you. In a way I have a feeling that this team shouldn't be able to pull off that kind of a miracle. There's a reason why their record is what it is - because this is not a playoff team. Go into this season with this team and people will be a.) pissed and b.) be picking this team to win 85-90 games.
ReplyDeleteBut it's still a scenario.
ichiro not so fast after that, it seemed
ReplyDeleteRun.

ReplyDeletecan't believe the two best AL east teams are deadlocked going into the 11th at 3-3.
ReplyDeletepitt and mets also 0-0 after 9.
ReplyDeletealright, need to get sleep before "that test" tomorrow (as everyone i know calls it :>))
ReplyDeletekinda puts things in perspective.

I love that on Google you can have a live Twitter stream for any keyword, such as, Yankees or Rays.
ReplyDeleteAnd the Rays win!
ReplyDeleteTampa wins it.
ReplyDeleteOne person said, and I'm taking this with a grain of salt, that it's the first time in MLB history that both the Mets and Yankees have been in a scoreless game after 9 innings in one day.
ReplyDeleteMFY now in 2nd place.
ReplyDeleteWhy was CC ejected in the 9th inning?
ReplyDeleteI like watching the kids play. I hope at least one of Reddick or Anderson become a MLB regular.
ReplyDeletei did not know he was tossed.

brignac dong off mitre.
Crawford was ejected for arguing about really bad calls after he struck out.
ReplyDeleteGood luck Tim!
ReplyDeleteremy had to talk to fans in the lobby. they must have found him hiding behind a plant when he tried to run back to his room.

ReplyDeleteshovel pass!
ReplyDeleteNice play! I must be living under a rock, but Scutaro playing second base? Good move, actually. Doesn't have to throw so hard.
ReplyDeleteHeidi looks great even three hours behind.
ReplyDeleteGood night, all.
ReplyDeletei do wish she'd say "fewer" instead of "less" -- since it would be correct
ReplyDeletenot sure if it is NESN or EI, but the first pitches of the Sox's 2nd and 4th have been missed. judging from don's call, pretty sure NESN missed the one to Beltre in the 2nd.
' night! earlier game on wed, btw.
ReplyDelete"IanMBrowne: Lester achieved milestone tonight, joining Clemens, Pedro, Cy Young and Smokey Joe Wood only Sox pitchers with 200 K's back to back seasons."
ReplyDeleteWrong CC. It was Carl Crawford who was ejected (apparently arguing balls & strikes).
ReplyDeletefewer/less mistake...one of the pet peeves in our house. Our daughter is especially bothered by it.
ReplyDeleteawesome catch!
ReplyDeleteawesome catch!
ReplyDeleteI missed the replay, but saw the ball-grabbing sox fan escorted out. What was up with that?
ReplyDeletereached over and grabbed flo's hit down the line.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Papi was headed for a triple on that one though. Still, don't mess with balls in play.
ReplyDeletedig. I looked up and saw him holding it, then on the replay I saw it going that way, but not the nab. didn't seem like it was angling to bounce into the stands.
ReplyDeleteGood night guys. I'm done for the night.
ReplyDeleteg'night. I've been distracted by an endless stream of youtube vids.
ReplyDeletesid: dp pls
ReplyDeleteI'd like this inning to go quietly into the night.
ReplyDeletethere's an out.
ReplyDeleteJohn Farrel is watching from a hospital bed in Oakland I would guess, hope he gets better soon.
