G146: Red Sox 5, Mariners 1

Red Sox - 000 101 210 - 5 10 0
Mariners - 100 000 000 - 1 6 1
Buchholz (7-4-1-3-6, 109) bounced back from his one-inning debacle last Friday in Oakland and the Red Sox swept three games from the Mariners with relative ease. As the Yankees and Rays were playing each other on the same nights, Boston gained ground on someone every single night.

Adrian Beltre's dong in the fourth tied the game at 1-1 -- and NESN had some good shots of Victor Martinez and Marco Scutaro attacking AB's bald head (with ice!) in the dugout. David Ortiz doubled and scored in the sixth on Chone Figgins's infield error. Facing the Seattle pen in the seventh, Scutaro singled, Ryan Kalish doubled, and Martinez doubled them both home. With two outs in the eighth, Scutaro walked and scored on Kalish's first career triple.

The Rays beat the Yankees 4-3. Dan Johnson drove in all four of Tampa's runs with two two-run home runs.

Boston is 6.5 GB the Rays in the East. The Red Sox are 6 GB New York in the WC -- and 7 of their remaining 16 games are against the Yankees (who have lost 8 of their last 10 games).

Example
September 15:

1901 - The most lopsided score in AL history is 21-0 22-0. (See comments for some info.) As far as 21-0 games go, here are two -- and neither of them went the full nine innings!
September 15, 1901
CLE - 000 000 00 - 0
DET - 202 436 4x - 21
Game called so CLE could catch a train.

August 13, 1939
NYY - 055 215 03 - 21 23 0
PHI - 000 000 00 - 0 3 3
2nd game of DH; probably called for darkness
1971 - Making his debut in the top of the ninth, Houston pitcher Larry Yount hurts his right elbow during his warm-up pitches and has to leave the game. He never gets the chance to pitch in the majors again. His younger brother Robin will have a much longer career.

  3. Well, shit. (Stupid BRef is wrong.)

I should have remembered that one. That prompted Steinbrenner to blast Billy Ocean music during BP to motive the troops!!!

    CLE - 333 061 006 - 22 22 1
    NYY - 000 000 000 - 0 5 0

The ESPN story notes that Pittsburgh beat the Cubs 22-0 on September 16, 1975, the famous Rennie Stennett 7-for-7 game.

I was shocked to not to see that in the post. I remembered the score and the year!

There was also a similar NYY rout in reverse in 1999. We were in Detroit or Chicago and saw it on the scoreboard.

  6. i thought this game was at 3:30 for some reason. got home from my exam all geared up to watch it and now i have to wait :(

oh well, got a birdie ready to go in the oven along with some leeks.

  7. So witty, PA.

"The Mariners will present the Japanese ambassador to the United States, Ichiro Fujisaki, with a framed jersey today before the game and he will address the crowd. He is in Seattle to commemorate the visit of Japan's crown prince and princess (now the current emperor and empress) 50 years ago.

Presumably the Red Sox will try and negotiate the return of Daisuke Matsuzaka back to Japan with Mr. Fujisaki at some point during the ceremony"

    Fuck off, bud.

  8. 3:30 -- if you are in Seattle!

Pete Abe: "Terry Francona thinks he's the only person to have played with and been managed by Pete Rose. Any dissenters out there?"

  9. saw that on twitter, someone said davey concepcion.

    July 24, 1999
    CLE - 000 000 100 - 1 9 1
    NYY - 400 176 30x - 21 21 0

We were in Detroit, watching the Sox hit 6 dongs (Trot 3, Nomar 2, Daubach 1, O'Leary 1) and romp 11-4.

  13. This is awesome, NESN. Screen frozen on starting lineup.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I changed it. Now the channel is black.

    ReplyDelete
  15. At the start of a game, Remy is always YELLING his commentary, then he calms down.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Does your EI work?

None of the sports channels are coming through for me.

    ReplyDelete
  17. ichiro: wee willie keeler approves, but you are out!

    ReplyDelete
  18. i got the sound but no picture.

trying to reboot the receiver now.

    ReplyDelete
  19. you are welcome to come by and watch.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I'm getting the game on EI. One of the *many* problems with Comcast is that they don't make any of their EI channels high def. Go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Tim, is the exam over or do you still have another day?

    ReplyDelete
  22. third and final day tomorrow! first two days went alright i guess...i dunno what to think. i try not to think about it.

on the phone with rogers, no picture on EI channels - not even the ones that don't have a game on and show the schedule. i get audio on all of them...

on the bright side i found some HD EI channels while looking for an alt. feed...thought they all disappeared for football season. too bad this game isn't on them!

  23. How nice of the Mariners to play a game on East Coast time!

    ReplyDelete
  24. My licensure exam was over two days. I called my husband after day one crying that I knew I had failed it. After it was over, a colleague reminded me that 70% is passing and when was the last time you felt good about a 70% on a test. They purposely make some of the questions impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  25. back now. no idea if the rogers lady fixed it or what.

    what is this shit? 1-0.

    ReplyDelete
  26. yeah, these multi day exams you can't get all worked up over the first or second day - just need to forget about it and push through.

so i'm guessing you did hear good news about the licensure exam?

as for the marking of this one, i don't even wanna get into it. its fucked. they take 3 months to mark the thing because of how they play with the marking scheme in order to pass a certain amount of people (usually ~70%)

    ReplyDelete
  27. The bar exam was also over two days. I was ready to die after Day One. I cannot imagine stretching that stress over three days. Hope it is over fast, Tim.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Meanwhile....back at the game.

    DAMN.

    ReplyDelete
  29. yeah, if you think you did shitty n day 1, there must be a lot of pressure the next day.

looked like hh swiped the bag with his toe. could have been the first of ??? blown calls tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree, Allan. Isn't touching the side of the base sufficient?

But HH has not been as sharp the last two starts.

    ReplyDelete
  31. stress? what's that?

i'm like the manny ramirez of this exam.

    ReplyDelete
  32. getting all ready to do the mummy tomorrow at 1pm after i hit my walkoff dong.

    ReplyDelete
  33. it would be -- he'd be touching the base! -- but none of the replays were at a conclusive angle.

    ReplyDelete
  34. LOL, Tim! Are you really that relaxed?

    ReplyDelete
  35. The Manny of the exam, ha. No pressure.

Amy, I remember my husband taking the Bar exam. I went with him (probably a bad idea). It was at a hotel and he remembers two kitchen workers getting in a fight (right beside their conference room) during day one. He also remembers having to study in the bathtub between day one and two because I wanted to watch TV. Was I really that selfish?

Yes, I passed. Three months?? That's a long wait.

    ReplyDelete
  36. its all cases as opposed to purely technical stuff, so you can't really dump information. i've spent the past month basically figuring out how to write the cases and learning the technical stuff, so now its just being able to deal with whatever they throw at you. can't really do anything about it and studying/stressing out about it won't help the cause, and once its over its over...as long as i do the best i can do during the exam, thats all i can do, so may as well not dwell on whatever happened and just look forward to the next day and results release and see if my best was good enough.

    ReplyDelete
  37. i'm like the manny ramirez of this exam.

you're going to murder your professor? cuz manny killed someone -- that's why everyone hates him, right?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Great attitude Tim. That will work well in life.

I stopped by a (new to me) Mennonite farm on my way home from work. THIS IS THE BEST CORN I"VE HAD ALL SEASON. Wow, really good.

    ReplyDelete
  39. MrsG, I was just as bad when Harvey took the bar. (He was more considerate when I took it!)

I waited three and half months to get the bar results. And I took it twice...once for MA, once for CT. Never again!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Tim, how did you end up so sane!??

    ReplyDelete
  41. keep runnin', figgy, we like it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Tim, how did you end up so sane!??

    drugs?

    (no not really)

    ReplyDelete
  43. well, hopefully i'm not one of those people that suppresses all emotions for like 35 years, then goes out and kills a bunch of people or rapes kids while pouring sugar in old ladies' gas tanks or something.

    that would suck.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Assuming we win tonight:

    if NY beats TB
    East: 7 GB NY
    WC: 5.5 GB TB

    if TB beats NY
    East 6.5 GB TB
    WC: 6 GB NY

(i hope my math is correct)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes, Tim. That would definitely suck.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well, Tim can correct your math if you are wrong. He is almost a licensed CPA Canada style. (I forget what the title is there.)

  47. I just got back from Lake George, NY. Had some pretty good corn up there. And saw a monster storm come off the lake as fast as I have ever seen it, complete with tons of hail. But over in 15 minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Zen, Lake George, NY? We spent the longest 24 hours of 2009 there last December. I hope it is better there in September.

    ReplyDelete
  49. shit - brawl about to start in the sox dugout

    ReplyDelete
  50. CA, amy.

    which stands for...can't add! (laaaame)

    ReplyDelete
  51. vic gets beltre head

beltre throws a cup of water on him

vic looks pissed; beltre always looks pissed, but who knows?

scutaro comes back and dumps ice on beltre's head - another violent lunge by AB.

    ReplyDelete
  52. yeah, mennonites have great corn. so do christians.

    ReplyDelete
  53. why hasn't someone done a full-length feature on the beltre head-rubbing antics?

    ReplyDelete
  54. alright, dinner time. see ya lator!

    ReplyDelete
  55. yeah, mennonites have great corn. so do christians.
    Huh?

beltre always looks pissed, but who knows?
I saw part of a smile on Beltre's face.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Lake George is great. I'm from near there and have always gone to my Dad's place there on weekends/summers growing up and family get togethers now.

You had a bad day there because of weather?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Zen, we went there when it was about -32 degrees outside (well, single digits anyway) and there was NOTHING open. We ended up eating dinner at a chain Italian restaurant, Olive Garden, which we could have gone to at home. There was no night life, and during the day there was nothing to do. We left and had lunch in Saratoga and went home.

I have a feeling it is much prettier there and livelier in the summer, but I would never go back in the winter.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yeah, there's no real reason to go there unless you're doing winter sports or something. The lake itself is the attraction, not any food or night life around it. LG Village is as cheesy a tourist spot as you'll find.

    ReplyDelete
  59. OK, I guess then our reaction was not just due to the bitter cold! That was our take on the place---lots of tackiness. But it was all closed anyway. I do know people who have been there in the summer and love it. But I am more a shore/beach person so am not likely to return there anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Why do I laugh whenever I see Papi running?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Was he always a second baseman?

    ReplyDelete
  62. there's a couple mennonite corn farms near me, as well as some christian ones - and they all have delicious corn.

unless i'm just religiously ignorant here or something. do mennonites = christians?

    ...

    ReplyDelete
  63. I think Mennonites are Christians, just a particular sect. Like the Amish, I believe, right?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Does anyone else say "Chone" in their head (or out loud) instead of Shawn? Or is it just in our household?

    ReplyDelete
  65. ah, perfect.

this is what we needed - another rookie slam.

    ReplyDelete
  66. i have called him chone (as in bone or alone) for many years

    ReplyDelete
  67. Yes, Mennonites = Christians.

Whew, I thought I was losing it on the humor front. I usually get Tim's humor, but not this time. I'm glad there was no humor intended.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Is there some group that spells Sean/Shawn that way, or were his parents just... creative?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Damn. Wasted that opportunity. At least we got the one run.

    ReplyDelete
  70. yeah, the mennonites are similar to the amish.

there's horse parking spots in the grocery store and home depot near us for their preferred mode of transport.

of course, there's also the ones that wear the bonnets and use their blackberries.

    ReplyDelete
  71. yup definitely is bone chone to me.

i guess if he hits a home run, it'd be a choner.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I usually get Tim's humor, but not this time. I'm glad there was no humor intended.

    Nope, just pure stupidity!

    ReplyDelete
  73. down in tamper, disaster appears imminent.

  74. are you saying PHIL HUGHES IS PITCHING A NO-HITTER????

    ReplyDelete
  75. no.

what i was saying is that PHIL HUGHES IS PITCHING A PERFECT GAME!

    ReplyDelete
  76. good news, gang! if he allows these two runners on base to score and finishes the inning, he'll still get the quality start!

    ReplyDelete
  77. wow, i totally thought there were 0 outs there.

its these little surprises that make life nice :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. I thought Rowland-Smith is a starter?

    ReplyDelete
  79. "scutaro...being waved around by tim bogar"

well, what a surprise. but i approve.

    kalishous.

    ReplyDelete
  80. OK, that Safe and Secure thing is really ANNOYING.

    ReplyDelete
  81. mmmmmmmmmmm

    blue light 2 for 1!

    ReplyDelete
  82. So we get two instead of one. I will take it.

    ReplyDelete
  83. feels like a thursday night. i guess since i'll be done tomorrow. which reminds me, need to figure out what will be on tomorrow's exam.

    ReplyDelete
  84. How do you figure that out now?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Heavy Mennonite population here. Horse and buggy lanes on the roads, hitching stations at grocery stores, lots of great farm stands, etc. What gets me are the Old Orders with no cars, no electricity, etc., but the state of the art farm equipment going out in the fields.

    ReplyDelete
  86. rays have a runner at 3rd and 1 out, bot 5th

    ReplyDelete
  87. Hey, MrsG, I just noticed your new avatar. Very cute! We seem to be getting more and more pet photo avatars!

    ReplyDelete
  88. DONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    dan johnson -- rays 2-1!!!

    ReplyDelete
  89. well, they have to test a certain amount of areas (accounting, tax, finance etc) so i need to attempt and figure out what was on the first two, and see whats left.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Amy, that was in honor of Cody. And I am still honoring her.

    ReplyDelete
  91. gotta eat the salad last, orsillo!

    ReplyDelete
  94. no hits to the last 16 batters (2 bb).

    ReplyDelete
  95. Nice tribute to Cody.

If Tim had a picture of his dog Winston as his avatar, we would be an all dog thread. Except for Zen, but he is being quiet or gone.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Kalish with the RBI triple.

Sorry, I'm a little late and distracted. I'm looking at websites to find a non-traditional photographer for my son's senior pictures. He is against anything established and mainstream and would prefer no pictures. I've got to take advantage of his current willingness to do it for me.

    ReplyDelete
  97. winston doesn't deserve a pic in the sacred gamethread, until he's better behaved.

i keep telling him that, but he looks at me confused at the mention of gamethread.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I know a non-traditional photographer in VT, but not in VA.

    ReplyDelete
  99. that's cool, MGT - the traditional grad photos suck anyway. as do the "cool" photos done by traditional photographers - i.e. the exact same photo, just CRAZEEE DIAGONALLY!!!!! so weak.

    ReplyDelete
  100. i've got a friend that does good photos. does your son want to make a trip up to the good old ca-of-nada?

    ReplyDelete
  101. my boss at work is also a photog.

    ReplyDelete
  102. He would love to make a trip to Canada, especially if there is a concert attached to it.

He says no cheesy pictures. No pictures of him with his guitar...or near a car...or beside a tree. I doubt that he will even wear any Red Sox gear.

I am proud of his independence, even if he needs to tone it down sometimes.

    Quick game, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  103. hmm, does he like ska? we can work something out in mid october.

    ReplyDelete
  104. yeah, weird to be in the 9th at this hour. guess its partially the early start time, but also has been under 3 hours.

    ReplyDelete
  105. started at 6:41, so we are at 2:34 right now

    ReplyDelete
  106. CI hit by pitch. MFY with 2 on, 1 out.

    ReplyDelete
  107. The photographer I know is in Burlington, VT. He prides himself on NOT doing the usual.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I forgot about your roots in Burlington, Allan. It is a place where an unusual photographer would end up.

    ReplyDelete
  109. always nice if the mfy lose, but we're gaining ground on *someone* tonight, so it's good

    ReplyDelete
  110. I just switched to the Yanks game. What's the booing for? They are talking about replay, fourth out of the inning. The Rays must have gotten robbed.

    NY up 3-2.

    ReplyDelete
  111. if the rays got robbed, tune into the rays feed for all the info and then some ...

    ReplyDelete
  112. They say that the ball hit the bat, not CI. If that's the case, CI put on a good show.

    ReplyDelete
  113. i was gonna say, must be the rays feed you're watching.

    ReplyDelete
  114. or wait until we play tampa next year, they may still be moaning about it ...

    ReplyDelete
  115. if the rays got robbed, tune into the rays feed for all the info and then some ...

No joke, they were already talking about how Jeter didn't lift up any of his bands on his arms to show where he got hit. Several mentions of having to get four outs.

    TWO.

    ReplyDelete
  116. The water is Muddy!!!

    The deer ain't dead.

Enjoyed it everyone. Have a good evening.

Good luck Tim. One more day and then have a great weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Good luck, Tim!

    Good night, all.

    ReplyDelete
  119. well, this is it for me in gamethreads until the CWS series in the last week of sept.

mom visit from tmrw-sun, then off to panama for a week on monday.

enjoy the next week and a half!

    ReplyDelete
  120. espn doing mfy-fkr, couldn't have been the rays feed.

aaron boone doing colour, how about that. he's harping on the blown call and need for replay.

    ReplyDelete
  121. just got back from a winston walk, and what do we have here?!?!?!

very nice. nail this shit down, fkr.

    ReplyDelete
  122. i'll take the backwards-k and grant me another, wouldya?

    ReplyDelete
  123. extinguished. nice. tack on some more rays, then seal it up.

so...fkr win, 6 back in WC, 6.5 back in east.
mfy win, 5.5 back in WC, 7 back in east.

    if my math is correct.

    ReplyDelete
  124. well, i guess allan said it in the 7:33 pm post.

I've heard fans go against Jeter plenty in 10 years covering this team, but this crowd is more excited rooting against him than I've seen.

Jeter strikes out, causing an eruption. Honestly, that was a Fenway Park type of cheer.

  131. The Red Sox are 6 GB New York in the WC -- and 7 of their remaining 16 games are against the Yankees (who have lost 8 of their last 10 games).

I believe it is 6 with NY....

    ReplyDelete
  132. well, hopefully i'm not one of those people that suppresses all emotions for like 35 years, then goes out and kills a bunch of people or rapes kids while pouring sugar in old ladies' gas tanks or something

    OK this is weird.....
I can't remember the last time I heard mention of putting sugar in someone's gas tank. But I missed the thread because I was at a friend's house. I was there because someone put sugar in her gas tank last night while they were asleep. It's just her, a 14 year-old son and a 19 yr-old daughter so she was understandably nervous about why someone would do it and what might happen next. Of course, she's not really an "old lady", she's younger than me, but in the eyes of the person who did it, most likely a teenager, well you know......we're all old.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Uh-oh, after all these years, Allan and I have to get legally married. Living together almost 25 years isn't good enough.

Gosh, what should I do. Live my own life the way I want, or have an anonymous troll tell me what to do. Tough decision.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Plus he says I'm fat and ugly! My life is ruined!

    ReplyDelete
  135. ... have an anonymous troll tell me what to do

The exact quote: "Still 6 games back Call me when you're tied FUCKING UNMARRIED NERD"

    I'll need your phone number.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I remember that Yanks game well, I was living with a Yankees fan (he's a good person otherwise) and that was still back before the WS win so I used even games we weren't involved in to look for ammo to knock on them.

I bought a damn shirt with the score and date on it. Sad how spiteful I used to be...

I am 999% positive you couldn't give 2 shits what I'm about to write, but nevertheless I have to say it.

This isn't an excuse, or anything along those lines. I'm in my mid-20's....single, go out a lot. Last night I had a work event, open bar, everyone was partying, drank quite a lot, watched my team tank it yet again, and vented my frustration on here.

I have no fucking right to discuss you and Laura's personal life, or attack you the way I did. I read my comments now as I'm sitting at my desk and I'm mortified, embarrassed, and ashamed. I am so so sorry.

Clearly I've made myself out to be nothing more than an ignorant troll on this blog.

After what I wrote last night, I am done. The Sox can lose the next 8 games you won't see a comment. The Yankees can win the Series again, you won't see a comment. I'm banning myself. Comment moderation will no longer be needed.

I'm just extremely sorry about this...that's all I can say. We're all baseball fans...I clearly took it outside baseball. I'm a good person, have a good background, and I'm not the rude, vile person that I've made myself out to be. Again - I'm really embarrassed.

Like I've said before - you do baseball fans justice with this blog, it's well-done, great writing, and great coverage. I'll continue to read...

I'm sorry to you and Laura. Laura - the comments I said were awful, and just flat out disgusting. Talking like that to a woman is not how I was raised. I am sure you both could not care the least....but it definitely is a sincere apology.

Since when has unmarried been considered an insult....Dude, in my opinion, and I have not seen everything, this might be your tamest, seeing that Allan is unmarried and pretty much a self proclaimed baseball nerd...Mabybe I missed something...and maybe it is none of my business, and maybe A & L were really offended by this one...

You are in your mid 20's and went out got drunk the yankees lost, and you came here to vent your frustration.

You might want to reevalute your priorties...

and for what it is worth , I think you are full of shit...and you wouldn't apologize to Allan for all the money in the world....

Considering the comments BR is apologizing for were the ones calling me an "ugly fat girl" - and considering he heckles Allan on a regular basis for supposedly being an old loser, having no life, never going outside, etc etc - and considering he posts 5, 6, 8, 10 comments like that all at once on a regular basis - it's safe to assume BR is trying to insult us.

The point about being "unmarried" is implying Allan is too old to not be married. (Psst, Allan is married, to me, in every sense of the word except on paper in the US.)

I think I can speak for both A and I to say we are not offended because BR is an idiot. I'm a bit past being offended by drunk 20-somethings. But you'll have to trust me, his comments were definitely, without any doubt, intended to be insulting.

Rethinking his priorities is good advice. Learning not to type when drunk is also a must.

He's been trolling JoS for months. Then he blames one post on drinking and venting. As if this is the first time!

  142. SoSock,

Maybe this are the crazy odds that the Sox need! What are the odds that someone would post on a blog about sugar in a gas tank the same night that one of the regular posters has an experience with...sugar in a gas tank? I had never even heard of sugar in a gas tank.

I would say that the odds of that are slimmer than the odds of the Sox making the playoffs!
