Trade For Adrian Gonzalez "Very Close"

ESPN:
The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a deal in principle to acquire slugging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez ... [and] have received permission from Major League Baseball to negotiate with Gonzalez on a new contract. ...

Gonzalez's physical examination, one of the last hurdles to the deal, was completed early Saturday afternoon [in Boston] ... While all indications are that Gonzalez passed [he had surgery on his right, non-throwing shoulder to clean up the labrum on October 20, 2010], there's been no official word.
Sources say that Boston will send a fourth player, to be named later, to San Diego.
Example
Gordon Edes, 10:14 AM:
Source: Kelly, Rizzo, Fuentes to San Diego.
Example
Updates from Buster Olney

5:15 AM:
Sources: The San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox are on the verge of finishing an Adrian Gonzalez deal. Players all agreed to.
5:19 AM:
The Red Sox are far enough along in the conversation that they are trying to work out a new contract with Adrian Gonzalez.
7:30 AM-ish:
Sources: Padres and Red Sox have agreed to a Gonzalez trade, pending physical -- and perhaps negotiations with the first baseman. We'll see.
7:45 AM-ish:
Sources: Major League Baseball has approved a negotiating window for the Red Sox to negotiate with Adrian gonzalez.
7:50 AM-ish:
Sources: Gonzalez is expected to be in Boston today.
And still, very little hard information has leaked out about which Red Sox players will be dealt.
Example
Padres beat writer Dan Hayes (North County Times) wrote 21 minutes ago:
Just heard from a second source that Padres-Red Sox deal for Adrian Gonzalez is very close.
This comes on the heels of Gordon Edes reporting about an hour ago that Theo Epstein is "making some headway" in discussions to bring Padres 1B Adrian Gonzalez to Boston -- and a source says the clubs could "possibly" make a trade by the end of the weekend. Earlier, Hayes had tweeted that discussions were "serious".

Gonzalez, 28, had surgery on his right shoulder in October.

Edes:
According to the source familiar with the negotiations, the proposed deal centers only on minor leaguers ... They almost certainly would seek pitcher Casey Kelly and first baseman Anthony Rizzo in any deal, with outfielder Ryan Kalish, shortstop Jose Iglesias, outfielder Josh Riddick, 19-year-old outfielder Reymond Fuentes, pitcher Stolmy Pimentel, and catcher Ryan Lavarnway also potential targets.

It is reasonable to assume it may take at least three top prospects to make a deal, with perhaps another minor leaguer or two of lesser skills included.
Four hours ago, SI's Jon Heyman tweeted: "if adrian gonzalez is traded, he hopes its boston, i hear. could have something to do with their ability to win & to give him teixiera deal"

SoSH had a rumour that Gonzalez was in Boston for a physical. No idea if that is true.

  2. I get so attached to the prospects that I'm probably going to hate what ever deal they swing. But I trust Theo to do the right thing for the franchise and I know Gonzalez is an amazing hitter. I hope we don't have to give up the farm for the right to pay him $25 million when he's 37 and 38 though.

  3. I hope the deal doesn't include Feuntes. 19 year old outfielder with superior skills to Ellsbury. Faster.

  4. I have never been big on Casey Kelly. I think he is a younger version of Joba Chamberlain. Privileged, potential out the wazoo, potential headcase. I could be totally wrong but I never am high on guys who think they are owed something.

  5. Kyle, in what way are Kelly and Joba privileged more than many other players? I'm not disputing you - I'm ignorant on this and wondering what you're basing your opinion on.

  6. Kelly, Rizzo, Fuentes to San Diego.

Check out that shoulder and let's rock and roll! Fuck Yeah.

  8. Sounds like Feuntes, Rizzo and Kelly. Oh man. Feuntes is a HUGE loss in my mind. Rizzo as well.

  9. Hmm. I think it is just based on personal observation. Both Kelly and Joba don't crease their hats. Silly thing really but shows a certain attitude to me.

Plus, both players seem to be coddled to me. Just personal observation but it seems both players have been protected by their organizations.

Plus, they are known to have enormous talent or "potential" and they very well do but I think when a young player is told this their entire lives, they often do not live up to expectations. I have done some limited research on this but would like to do more.

  10. Chad Finn, Globe, November 2009:

What it should mean is that any negotiations between the Red Sox and Padres for Gonzalez are going to have to be truly honest. There will no suggestions that Michael Bowden is a suitable stand-in for Clay Buchholz. No snake-oil salesmanship of farmhands Baseball America and the like might praise, but whom are considered "fake" prospects within the confines of the Red Sox' baseball ops department.

If he's as competent as his reputation suggests, Hoyer cannot be duped here. He knows the in-house answers, whatever they may be, for why Clay Buchholz wilted in 2008. He knows how Daniel Bard's control problems in Single A were cured. He knows why Lars Anderson struggled in Double A, he knows whether Casey Kelly should pitch or play shortstop, he knows the club's preference between Josh Reddick and Ryan Kalish, and he knows so much more than that.

When Hoyer and Epstein talk about a Gonzalez deal-- and c'mon, you know they will -- it will be to involve the real prospects, the ones Hoyer knows Epstein is loath to part with. And should a deal be consummated, I suspect it will be one that both Hoyer and Epstein both feel good about, yet one that also leaves both men a little queasy. Man, I hated to give up that guy, but we had to do it ... didn't we?

    ****

You don't get a 28 YO elite hitter and solid glove man without giving up someone you really would rather not give up.

Have not seen much speculation on what the extension would be. Gotta be 6-7 years at more than 20 per, right?

    ReplyDelete
  11. You raise a good point. Indeed, we do have to give up prospects to get productive players.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Okay, so we trade three prospects to San Diego, but we end up getting picks in return for the departure of V-Mart and Beltre. Four high picks, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Gonna miss the prospects.

Gonna love the soon-to-be-developed bromance between Gonzo and the Monster.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Heyman says negotiations "may take day or 2. im guessing they add 7 yrs, $165-170 mil for 8 yrs $171-176 total"

i was going to say 7/150.

  15. I am queasy about giving up both Kelly and Rizzo for a 1 year rental, even if it includes exclusive rights to give him tons of money.

So Youkilis at third for a year.

No Crawford, I assume, as he's another lefty. :(

Perhaps Gonzalez spray chart could stifle my tears.

Maybe, but I would rather know we make ourselves better today than have hopes these guys are good 4 years from now.

I assume this means no Beltre ....

  17. Ish, don't forget the pick from Lopez. We get 5 high picks to replenish the system this coming draft.

  18. If you're going for wall allusions, Hadrian's Wall is sitting there.

He desperately needs a better nickname than "Gonzo". Even "Rocky" would be better.

I have charts from 2009 and 2010 ready to go when the deal is final!

His agent, John Boggs, will meet with the Red Sox this afternoon to discuss a contract extension.

  22. Petco is perhaps the worst park for a LH hitter and Gonzalez has still been a beast.

He had an .980 OPS on the road last year (.940 career). OPS of .821 at home last year.

  23. McAdam: "Source: Gonzalez has already taken physical, repaired right shoulder "should be fine," just minor tests still to complete."

  24. His eyebrows are menacing, and remind me of Snidely Whiplash.

He looks like a villain about to tie a damsel to train tracks.

  25. Joe Morgan out of SNB and A-Gon in for the Sox. Turned out to be quite a winter so far, huh? As Chad Finn said in closing his latest piece, I wish the season started tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I am OK with Kelly/Rizzo/Fuentes. We keep Iglesias.

A-Gone is a little better nickname than Gonzo. But either way, he needs a new one for JoS as some point.

I am hoping his contract would be more like what we offered Tex than what Tex got from the Yanks.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I ran JoS through URLai for the fun of it. It supposedly analyzes the content of blogs and predicts the author's age, gender, and happiness.

  31. Love this hot stove talk! So what's our lineup then? Gonzalez certainly means Youk to 3B. Where's that leave Beltre? The Angels? Or can we sign Beltre and put Youk in LF? I heard a

    1B A. Gonzalez
    2B D. Pedroia
    SS J. Lowrie? M. Scutaro?
    3B K. Youkilis
    RF J. Drew?
    CF/LF J. Ellsbury? C. Crawford? J. Werth?
C A big bucket? A robot? A guy with 18 letters in his last name?
    DH D. Ortiz
SP HH, Lackey, Beckett, Lester, Matsuzaka
RP Bard, Papelbon, and a lot of TBDs

    Certainly interesting off-season.

In other words, this site is complete bullshit! A must to avoid.

  37. Kyle, if you're still reading, thanks for your reply. The personal observation and the hat-crease theory of player value doesn't work much for me.

Many professional athletes have been labelled as exceptionally talented at an early age - because compared to their peers, they were - and burdened with high expectations. I would think that's fairly common.
