G13: Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 1

Blue Jays - 010 000 000 - 1 5 0
Red Sox - 220 000 00x - 4 9 0
Beckett was dominating for the second straight start (7-3-1-2-9, 101), lowering his ERA to 1.80, and leadoff hitter Jed Lowrie sparked the offense with three hits, including a two-run home run.

Beckett has allowed only 10 hits and seven walks in 20 innings, an 0.850 WHIP. Looking at the AL leaders, he is in or near the Top 5 in WHIP, H/9, strikeouts, and K/9.

The first five Boston batters reached base in the first inning, but Reyes, down 2-0 and working with no outs and the bases loaded, got two strikeouts and a grounder to avoid further damage. Jacoby Ellsbury walked to start the second and Lowrie -- now batting .500 this year (11-for-22) -- homered to left.

Toronto never had more than one runner on base at any time. Indeed, only in the second inning, when Aaron Hill doubled and Travis Snider singled him home, did they have more than one base runner in any inning.

Adrian Gonzalez singled and walked twice, and made several nice plays at first base. Mike Cameron, who began the day hitting .091, had two hits in four trips. David Ortiz walked three times, and Ellsbury walked twice, stole a base, and was hit by a pitch.

The Yankees (8-5) beat the Rangers 5-2, so the Red Sox (3-10) remain 5 GB.

  2. New day, new picture, new mojo.

    Let's turn this thing around.

I went to bed last night thinking that this start will make the turn around even sweeter. Imagine how incredulous all those MFY fans will be when we surpass them in the standings.

  4. Crawford (7-for-51, .137/.185/.157, a -4 OPS+) gets the day off:
"From the outside looking in, I guess I'm trying to do too much. ... I probably need to try and do a little bit at a time. ... I feel normal, but I guess I probably am trying to do too much. ... You look up there and you see that 1-something average. You try and get it all in one at-bat."

  7. OK, so I've been in attendance for both wins, and I'm going again tomorrow. But please, Red Sox, do not wait for me to get there.

  15. I went to the Price/Lester game and Darnell hit a dong. It was the only fun part about the game.

I'll rock him as my Avatar for awhile.

  16. That's a great pic, RSDH. You can't look at Papi's smile and not smile yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Tried both Premium feeds and the Basic feed...

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am outside the blackout window I think. It is 11:30 where I am in California.

    ReplyDelete
  29. California? Well, no shit it's available.

    I am in Toronto!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. When is the rained out TB game going to be made up?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nope, I'm on the East Coast and no blackout. I was surprised. Ahh, the Fox games are all at 4:00.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow, nasty storms coming through. We were in a toronado warning (very unusual for the valley).

  33. I will be at the day game at OAK on Wednesday.

  34. Edwin Encarnacion is on the berevement list for this series.

    ReplyDelete
  35. have we completely given up trying to throw out base stealers?

    ReplyDelete
  36. With cactus behind the plate? yes

    ReplyDelete
  37. I saw him play for the Cibao Eagles in the Dominican Winter League in December.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Those games are crazy there was about 10,000 people and the park was as loud as a full Fenway is.

  41. Reyes faced 21 batters in 3+ innings. That's nice!

    3-7-4-5-3, 94
(the 4 is subject to change)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Is this game moving as slowly as it feels like it is?

    ReplyDelete
  43. OK, this is the second time today Don has said "doesn't throw to either locale." Did someone finally tell him a base is not a venue, or is it bingo paranoia?

    ReplyDelete
  44. "Bluffs to third, bluffs to first, doesn't throw to either locale"

What are the drinking rules for this?

    ReplyDelete
  45. i think locale and destination should also count for that

all 3 are clearly part of his phrase for the non-move

    ReplyDelete
  46. Cameron is a corpse.

And he's batting 60 points higher than Varitek.

    ReplyDelete
  47. So we now have a corpse *and* a cactus on the team?

Venue: the scene of any event or action (especially the place of a meeting)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Red Sox trying to win their 3rd game of the year.

The fookin Orioles won their 3rd game on April 3 -- two weeks ago tomorrow!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hey there. Been getting ready for Passover while enjoying Beckett being Beckett. Remember 2007?

    ReplyDelete
  50. "So we now have a corpse *and* a cactus on the team?"

    And several stiffs....

  51. Just heard a sports talk radio commercial that L mentioned to me this morning. Lots of slagging of Manny.

It's grating, for sure, but let's remember that Manny was traded half way through 2008!!! It's coming up on THREE YEARS AGO!!!!

Jesus - give it up already!!

    ReplyDelete
  52. That Manny commercial is really irritating.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I think what bothers me is that they are using *that* to entice listeners --as though nothing worth talking about has happened to the Red Sox since July 2008.

    ReplyDelete
  54. If you had asked me when Manny left, and I didn't look it up, I would have said 2009 at the earliest. It just doesn't seem like three years.

    ReplyDelete
  55. hey now

    TEX - 000 000 02
    NYY - 201 000 0

    ReplyDelete
  56. The thing that irritates me about the Manny commercial is that it's all ancient history: what new information does anyone have, what is there left to say? None, nothing, and nothing likely either (I except Posnanski who did a nice piece on Manny, which basically says there's nothing to left say but says it wonderfully.) So, the radio show just winds up being the same old shit recycled forever.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Two consecutive solid starts from Beckett is VERY good news.

    ReplyDelete
  58. what new information does anyone have, what is there left to say?

In their minds, the PED stuff means that everything else they ever said about Manny was true. And they want to trumpet that. Over and over and over and over and over...

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hmm Cameron is getting the lead out now it seems.

    ReplyDelete
  60. castig with a bit too much enthusiasm for tek's bunt.

    ReplyDelete
  61. So there, you Tek haters. HA!

    ReplyDelete
  62. idiotic weei question, mentioned by OB several times today:

"do you think that carl crawford can still have a good season?"

    ReplyDelete
  63. it's part of a commercial - you text in Y or N

    ReplyDelete
  64. So why can't he play every day? What has Scutaro done lately?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Those are 2 very good questions, Amy.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Christ, at least play him every day while he's white hot!

    ReplyDelete
  67. OK, Pap. If Beckett can be 2007 Beckett, can you be 2007 Papelbon?

    ReplyDelete
  68. One more to go. And we will have THREE whole WINS!

    ReplyDelete
  69. didn't look like an error on the radio

    ReplyDelete
  70. Good play, Cameron!

    WE WON! Imagine that....

    ReplyDelete
  71. Here's a quote to start the next game post, Allan:

    April 16th: It begins.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Since I'd be posting that on April 17, shouldn't it be:

    April 16th: It began.

    ?

    ReplyDelete
  73. I can't thread from work, so I have to wait til now to say:

Don't drink the water! IT IS DIRTY!

I guess I was off by one day. I thought the huge winning streak would begin on Friday, but I see it began today.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I am a fan of that artist (now), but for the record, there was nothing springtime-like about Fenway Park today. We brought blankets and we could see our breath. Blankets!
