Red Sox - 011 021 000 - 5 11 0 Angels - 000 000 000 - 0 2 0After allowing only one hit to the Blue Jays in seven innings last Monday, Matsuzaka (8-1-0-3-9, 115) showed similar dominance over the Angels. The new economical Dice has faced only three or four batters in 14 of his last 15 innings; he has retired the side in order in 10 of the 15 innings.
The Red Sox have won four straight games and seven of their last eight -- the starting pitchers have a 1.01 ERA in those eight games -- and are now tied for third place in the AL East.
The lone hit was a second-inning infield single by Alberto Callaspo, who lined the ball right back at Matsuzaka's head. Dice got his glove up in time and deflected the ball to Jed Lowrie at shortstop. Lowrie tried to make a play at first base (and it was fairly close), but Callaspo beat it out.
Carl Crawford and Jason Varitek hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning. For Varitek, it was only his second hit of the season (he's now 2-for-27). Crawford also singled in the second, driving in Boston's first run against Santana (7-9-5-1-9, 104). Kevin Youkilis hit a two-run opposite-field dong, Lowrie had two hits, and Jacoby Ellsbury singled twice, stole two bases, and scored two runs.Daisuke Matsuzaka / Ervin Santana
Last Friday night, the Red Sox rallied with a three-run eighth inning against the Blue Jays, but lost 7-6, dropping their record to a dismal 2-10. For the week since then, here are the records of the AL East teams:
Boston picked up 1.5 games in the standings and is now 3.5 GB the Yankees. All four of the non-first place teams in the division are within one game of each other, so there should be a fair amount of shifting around in the next week. After the Angels series, the Red Sox head to Baltimore.Red Sox 6 1 (outscored opponents 34-16) Yankees 3 1 Rays 4 3 Orioles 2 4 Blue Jays 2 4
AL East: Rays/Blue Jays at 1 PM and Yankees/Orioles at 7 PM.
What a relief. Even though we're still under .500 and climbing out of the hole, it's so good to enjoy baseball and have confidence in the team again.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the focus on the recent records, it helps.

Pete Abe sez: Crawford is hitting 8th for the first time since 2003. ... Ted Williams hit his first home run in the majors 72 years ago today - against the Philadelphia Athletics at Fenway Park.
If we can go 5-2 over the next 7 games:
ReplyDelete2 at Angels
3 at Orioles
2 vs Mariners
we can finish April at 13-13.
13-13 is sounding awfully good about now.
ReplyDeleteI see Youk is back in the lineup. Good.
Finishing April at .500 would be great. Then we climb from there.
ReplyDeleteNo NESN again. WTF Rogers. Why are you doing this.
ReplyDelete(I can watch games this weekend b/c I'm home sick.)
re rogers:
ReplyDeletetim is going to have a talk with them.
don says santana is 2-2 against the red sox in his career.
ReplyDelete.... deep into the stats
"totes a hefty .355 average"
ReplyDeleteRogers has the game on 3 stations - all the same Fox LA feed. *sigh*
ReplyDeletefuckin idiots.
ReplyDeleteFox announcer just said, "I was talking to the Rem Dawg, Jerry Remy, next door, and he said Dice-K is coming off one of his best outings as a Red Sox, against the Toronto Blue Jays."
ReplyDeleteJerry tipped him off on this hidden gem of a fact, known only to home-team announcers.
wow - does remy get some secret newsletter that gives him inside knowledge that remain unknown to everyone at fox sports?
ReplyDeletei'm thinking the odds are even that the fox guys will try to figure out when dice is throwing the gyroball.
yanks 13, Orioles Not So Much
ReplyDeleteone fox angels guy: i ran into david ortiz before the game and he told me that the red sox had won a world series recently! we were talking about something else and he mentioned it so casually -- it shocked me -- because haven't the red sox gone a long time without winning a title ...
ReplyDeleteother fox angels guy: 1819.
The Jedi continues...
ReplyDelete1819?????
ReplyDeletenesn seems clueless about this (nothing new as Jere will tell you!), but didn't that ball hit off abreu's glove, go into the stands, and then bounce back out on the track?
ReplyDeleteIs there anything to the fact that the Sox beat the Angels so much? (Other than we're great and they suck.) I never pay attention to "career against X team" stats, they seem totally meaningless. Is the Sox long win streak vs Angels just a fluke of a small sample size?
ReplyDeleteremy is going back and forth between santawna or santanner!
ReplyDeleteThe Fox anncrs aren't calling the game at all. They are chatting while the game just goes on. Time to mute and go with MLB Audio.
ReplyDelete(I'm not exaggerating. THey are not calling the game.)
Looove that Angels D! :)
ReplyDeleteThe Abreu ball, if I saw it correctly, hit glove, then right off very top of wall, and back to field.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought I saw too.
ReplyDeleteIs there anything to the fact that the Sox beat the Angels so much? (Other than we're great and they suck.) I never pay attention to "career against X team" stats, they seem totally meaningless. Is the Sox long win streak vs Angels just a fluke of a small sample size?
ReplyDeleteNo.
Yes.
Go go gadget Sox!
ReplyDeleteI'm absolutely thrilled with he events of the last couple of weeks. Not only are we winning, but we're looking a lot more like the team I expected to see at the beginning of the year. And it's especially a thrill to see Beckett performing like he is.
We will be in first place by the end of May........
Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteby the way, what is the streak?
ReplyDeleteTek
ReplyDelete1-for-24 (.042)
Has batted with 27 men on base
Has zero RBI
I know one streak: our last 3 playoff games have been losses to the Angels.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure. I think Sox have won 11 of the last 12.
ReplyDeleteHey All. Just tuning in. CC with an RBI? Nice.
ReplyDeleteLaura, sorry you're sick, but glad you can join us.
Have ESPN gameday on while the B's game is on.
ReplyDeleteheidi in purple!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kathryn.

OK, where is the game?? Not on NESN because of a hockey game.
ReplyDeleteKat, can you email me? Or email Allan and he can fwd it, whatever address you have.
ReplyDeletegotta find your NESN+ channel
ReplyDeleteYes, just heard it: 11 out of 12.
ReplyDeleteNESN+ listings
ReplyDeleteSHIT SHIT SHIT
ReplyDeleteRyan Kalish, who injured his left shoulder diving for a ball on Thursday while playing for Triple A Pawtucket, has a partially torn labrum that could require season-ending surgery according to a source close to the outfielder.
Found it!
ReplyDeleteEB (Extra Bases, not Evil Bert): "The Sox have won six of seven and are 11-1 against the Angels since the start of last season."
ReplyDeleteAnd of course it goes to OT.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jere! I never can remember where it is. But I found it.
ReplyDeleteNeeded that
ReplyDeleteMy sense that we play well vs. LAA was rather compromised in the 2008 postseason.
ReplyDeletemore from abraham:
ReplyDelete"Kalish has started in a rehabilitation program and will be evaluated in 2-3 weeks. If the tear in his shoulder does not respond to treatment, surgery would be the next step.
The Red Sox described the injury as a “significant sprain” after Kalish was examined in Boston on Friday."
Hopefully your NESN plus channel is in HD, unlike mine! Fortunately that hockey game's almost over.
ReplyDeleteSWISH
ReplyDeleteK!
ReplyDeleteAhh, hockey. Caps won today to win the series. Yipee!
ReplyDeleteIt went to OT Jere, full intermission and then however long it takes until hopefully the Bruins score.
ReplyDeleteLBJ
ReplyDeletesingles > home runs
Clogging the bases again
ReplyDeleteThe other night it went OT and there was a score right away, just in time for the start of the Sox--almost got screwed that night. Definitely screwed tonight.
ReplyDeleteYou will never catch him :)
ReplyDeleteSee? You will never catch him!
ReplyDeleteEB!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhoo-hoo! 2-0
ReplyDeleteNow Evil Bert has done something
ReplyDeleteRoger that, EBert
ReplyDeleteYee-ha! Run(s)!
ReplyDeleteYes, my NESN plus is in HD. I am thankful for that.
ReplyDeleteWow, now I remember what's it's like when the Sox get hits!! So much more enjoyable. :)
Now THIS is the way to start an inning
ReplyDeleteA "vote mob" in Nova Scotia is tweeting a wmtc post. Massive numbers of people are mobbing wmtc.
ReplyDeleteWhy did I think there was only 1 out? I must be distracted......
ReplyDelete(translation - I am not watching this game at home :) )
Wow Laura - it must be satisfying to know that so many people are tuned in to what you believe so strongly in
ReplyDeleteHey, SoSock! I mentioned you last night (I think it was last night) comparing the Angel's defense to your Little Leaguers.
ReplyDeleteLaura, I have no idea what that means, but is it a good thing?
ReplyDeleteI thought Dice just gave up back to back to back dongs--oh wait, it's cuz I'm watching the game at Chippendales.
ReplyDeleteit sounds negative.
ReplyDeleteit is probably the latest post about a bunch of harper supporters deliberately drowning out a reporter's question so the shithead did not have to answer it
Who is that guy pitching for us, and what did he do to DiceK? Not that I am complaining.
ReplyDeleteNo, no, it's a very good thing. It's a big bunch of young people getting excited about voting! They are sharing a bunch of anti-Conservative info, and got a hold of a post of mine.
ReplyDeleteThat's great, Laura! It must be a great feeling, knowing you are having an impact.
ReplyDeleteThank you SoSock, it is gratifying. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is the post: here.
thanks amy, yes!
ReplyDeletethis is dice-k's second good start in a row. you may have missed the other one b/c of Passover.
Yes, I didn't see it, but I did read and hear about it. Even on Passover I keep up with the games. :)
ReplyDeleteI wish I could think of something to add to Jere's Chippendale comment... Maybe if Wang was pitching.
ReplyDeleteIs Chippendales even still around??
ReplyDeleteWow, who's the guy they snuck into Dice-K's uniform? 2-0 in the fourth? Woohoo!
ReplyDeleteMatsuzaka through 3: 5 fly outs, 4 strikeouts, no ground outs. Sucks about Kalish.
ReplyDeleteThat's exciting Laura.
ReplyDeleteBY WAY OF THE K.
ReplyDeleteWell sure Amy, I mean after all, it's only religion. Can't compete with baseball! ;)
ReplyDelete.040
ReplyDeleteThere goes the no-walker
ReplyDeleteBB? Was this a bad time to tune in?
ReplyDeleteTARDY ON THE CUT was last inning.
ReplyDeleteWow, 10 innings, 2 hits, and 5 base runners? Go, Dice-K, go!
ReplyDeleteA-Rod passed Manny for career GS. Damn.
ReplyDeletemanny had 21, so slappy has 22, and gehrig 23?
ReplyDeleteAmy, do you keep Passover? I am getting sick of matzo and there are 3 days to go.
ReplyDeleteYes 23
ReplyDeleteWow, I like this Dice guy. Where did he come from?
ReplyDeleteYes, Chippendales are still around. I taught a case about them this year in my trademark law class.
ReplyDeleteDICE PC: 16-17-16 14 = 63
ReplyDeleteYes, Rick, we do. Separate dishes and the whole shebang. I try to eat as little matzoh as possible though---just lots of fruit, veggies, etc.---to avoid the stomach issues matzah gives me!
ReplyDeleteMake that 8 flyouts and 4 strikeouts. We must not even be close to the record. Anyone know what it is? (most flyouts, 9 inning game)
ReplyDeleteSafe on a pitch out!!!
ReplyDeleteELLLLLLL BEEE JAAAYYY!!
ReplyDeleteHow did LBJ get on? I was away for a min.
ReplyDeleteBatters faced by Dice in each inning of last 2 starts:
ReplyDelete443 333 3
353 4
Nice short innings!
Jacoby hit a solid line drive up the middle.
ReplyDeleteScioscia must be dying inside watching the Red Sox steal bases.
I grew up keeping Passover w/ separate dishes and the whole thing too. It spoiled me for the "eat the same but add matzah" or "keep Passover in the home but eat what you want outside" thing.
ReplyDeleteThank you EL. Excellent!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Evil Bert. That's a check swing.
ReplyDeleteOT PP for the Bruins
ReplyDeleteWe keep it in and out. In fact, we don't eat out during Passover for just that reason.
ReplyDeletewhen he scowls, his eyebrows get really slanted.
ReplyDeleteAt my dad's house. Mother-in-law having Easter/Passover celebration. Shopping list was funny. "Matzah, ham, rolls". I will NOT be eating ham and cheese on Matzah.
ReplyDeleteGONE!!! YOUK!!!
ReplyDeleteSULTAN OF SWEAT
ReplyDeleteSWEATY DONG~!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWOOOOO!!
Nice!
ReplyDeleteSWEATY DONG!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYeah yeah Youk.
ReplyDeleteCan someone explain the separate dishes
ReplyDeleteYOUK!!!!!!!
thing to me?
why oh ewe ewe ewe ewe ewe kay
ReplyDeleteI didn't think that ball was anywhere close to leaving the park. Wow.
ReplyDeleteMatzah, ham, rolls, I love it. True multiculturalism.
ReplyDeleteHORSESHIT ON STRIKE 2
ReplyDeleteSeparate dishes are so no non-kosher-for-passover food goes on passover dishes. Passover dishes only for Passover food. You change all the dishes, pots, kitchen ware, to stuff that you only use that one week every year.
ReplyDeleteWe keep it in and out, but have relaxed our rules. Don't worry about other people's dishes, etc.
ReplyDeleteChanging subjects, it's nice to have baseball on after the kids are in bed. Doesn't happen much in California.
2 OT coming up in the Bruins game.
ReplyDeleteKat, sort of hard to do this briefly. But the laws of kashruth (keeping kosher) require two sets of dishes, pots and pans, etc., during the year, one for meat and one for dairy. Then during the 8 days of Passover you need to have another set of dishes for each because you are not supposed to use dishes or utensils that were used to cook food that is not kosher for Passover, like pasta, rice, bread, beans, etc.
ReplyDeletethe vending machine here at work is calling me, but i am wary. last sunday, i put a $10 bill in it and nothing happened. (i should be getting my $ back next friday.)
ReplyDeletedouble overtime in the hockey game. more non-HD time for me. goddammit.
ReplyDeleteHow long will you be in ATL for, Rick?
ReplyDeleteThanks L. Is Passover the only time that non-Kosher folks follow a Kosher diet?
ReplyDeleteNot so hard to explain (see my comment above) :)
ReplyDeleteI saw Hank Conger's name on a lineup, not knowing him, and thought to myself it was reminiscent of some player from 80-100 years back. And yet...he's Korean!
ReplyDeleteI asked that question before reading Amy's response. Now I'm confused. I'll read up on it later. Thanks, though.
ReplyDeleteKat, everyone does their own thing. Some people always follow the rules, some don't. Some follow them strictly, some don't. Like everything else in life!
ReplyDeletethe laws of kashruth
ReplyDeleteI like the laws of baberuth: alcohol, red meat, and unbridled hedonism.
LOL, Allan!
ReplyDeleteYou can keep Passover and not keep kosher. "Kosher for Passover" is something else. My family and many families we knew were not kosher (although we didn't eat pork, but that was a holdover from how my parents were raised). But we observed Passover dietary laws. It was considered a very special time, important enough to do that - I mean, it's only 8 days, it's not really difficult to be strict about it.
ReplyDeleteThis is all past tense for me, as an adult I became non-observant (on purpose, not out of laziness).
ReplyDeleteSweet Jesus. A three strikeout OTT for Dice-K?!?!
ReplyDeleteIncredible Dice.
ReplyDeleteHeading home Monday. Nice starting pitching, MatsuzaKKKKKKKa! Still no groundouts through 5.
ReplyDeleteThinking of it as part of the Kosher laws makes it more confusing. Just think of Passover as having laws unto itself.
ReplyDeleteDice-KKKKKKK
ReplyDeleteThe Babe Ruth laws would kill most normal humans.
ReplyDeletere what rick said: there have been games where the 1B never touches the ball, but they are pretty rare.
ReplyDeleteI mean, it's only 8 days, it's not really difficult to be strict about it.
ReplyDeleteEasy to say if you aren't stuck eating matzah and not eating bread and pasta for a whole 8 days! :)
Actually, it's not really that bad, but I do miss having my cereal in the morning, and a pizza would sure be nice!
Hell, Keith Richards might have had trouble keeping up with Babe.
ReplyDeleteEasy to say because I did it every year until I was 20. I never thought it was such a big deal, I enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteCC!
ReplyDeleteCC!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is sort of fun again!
ReplyDeleteBoy, he is fast! He got to 2d faster than I could type CC!
ReplyDeleteAnd Keith wasn't setting records in sports during his wild days.
ReplyDeleteOMG TEK?!?!?!?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteI DON'T BELIEVE ... WHAT I JUST SAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteFinally CC!
ReplyDeleteAn RBI for TEK! As I live and breathe...
ReplyDeleteHey amy--look who got an rbi!
ReplyDeleteTek!
ReplyDeletefirst RBI for tek since June 29 of last year.
ReplyDeletewtf?
It is TOTALLY fun! Nothing sort of about it!
ReplyDeleteTek saves his average from going negative!
ReplyDeleteBill of the cap high!
ReplyDeletefirst RBI for tek since June 29 of last year.
ReplyDeleteSrsly???
And some people wonder why we are down on him...
Tek saves his average from going negative!
ReplyDeleteOkay, THAT is FUNNY. Hahahaha!
Dice K has the weed pipe going.
ReplyDeleteThis team actually resembles the real Red Sox.
ReplyDelete"sort of fun"
ReplyDeleteMainers tend to be cautious, laura. Sort of cautious.
Man, I get up to brush my teeth and I miss a lot.
ReplyDeleteTime for me to shut the computer down. I'll be listening.
Good night all.
Happy Easter, Happy Passover, Happy Day.
Well, we in the rest of Joy Nation have been having fun for a while now. Come join us! :)
ReplyDeleteIs it my TV or do Don and Jerry look really tan?
ReplyDeleteGood night, Kat, and have a great Easter.
ReplyDeleteG'night!
ReplyDeleteOk, a groundout. I can sleep now.
ReplyDeleteah shit, an assist.

the ad for the Ultimate Red Sox Show said, "from the ballpark to batting practice..."
ReplyDeleteDon't they know batting practice takes place IN the ballpark?
I'm cooping too--I have an Easter basket full of student papers to read tomorrow. 'Night all.
ReplyDeleteI don't have NESN tonight but last time I saw them I said "tanning booth". Either that or too much makeup! I hope hit's makeup, since Jerry had cancer, he should know better.
ReplyDeletein the intro they do right before the game, remy always looks strangely tan or like a wax figure.
ReplyDeletewhen they show him in the booth during the game, he looks normal.
"from the this to the that..."
ReplyDeletead copy writers' favourite
I'll assume makeup. It sure doesn't look natural.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think they had gotten that much time to go to the beach while in SOCAL.
ReplyDeleteplus he is trying to smile while don talks and intros him ... he should give up trying to do that.
ReplyDeleteremy doesn't seem like the type to go out and get some sun.
ReplyDelete""from the this to the that..."
ReplyDeletead copy writers' favourite"
actually, speaking of that, there's a NYLife ad running now where they use a "from" but there's no "to"! I've listened closely to it every time to make sure I'm not missing anything, but nope, it's "from this, this, this, this..." and then it just goes on to something else with no "to."
It can't be sun - to go from Don's pasty white to a deep tan? They haven't been in Cali that long!
ReplyDeleteBruins Win on goal by Horton
ReplyDeleteYeah, that pre-game fake smile is dreadful.
ReplyDeleteDice-KKKKKKKK!
ReplyDeleteDice!!! Damn.
ReplyDeletewhatever he's doing between starts or during starts -- keep doing it.
ReplyDeleteSo what did DiceK learn/do/change since that awful game that he has become more effective? Is he finally listening to the Sox coaching staff?
ReplyDeleteJere, I like to listen to ad copy and see if it actually makes any sense or is even a sentence. Radio ads especially seem to make no sense.
ReplyDeleteThey talked about not having Dice do his long toss and side session on the same day. But then I never read much about it.
ReplyDeleteKKK KKK KKK
ReplyDeleteWow, nine Ks! Has he ever had this many? Or this many with this few walks?
ReplyDeleteNINE Ks for Dice! Wow!
