G20: Red Sox 5, Angels 0

Red Sox - 011 021 000 - 5 11 0
Angels - 000 000 000 - 0 2 0
After allowing only one hit to the Blue Jays in seven innings last Monday, Matsuzaka (8-1-0-3-9, 115) showed similar dominance over the Angels. The new economical Dice has faced only three or four batters in 14 of his last 15 innings; he has retired the side in order in 10 of the 15 innings.

The Red Sox have won four straight games and seven of their last eight -- the starting pitchers have a 1.01 ERA in those eight games -- and are now tied for third place in the AL East.

The lone hit was a second-inning infield single by Alberto Callaspo, who lined the ball right back at Matsuzaka's head. Dice got his glove up in time and deflected the ball to Jed Lowrie at shortstop. Lowrie tried to make a play at first base (and it was fairly close), but Callaspo beat it out.

Carl Crawford and Jason Varitek hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning. For Varitek, it was only his second hit of the season (he's now 2-for-27). Crawford also singled in the second, driving in Boston's first run against Santana (7-9-5-1-9, 104). Kevin Youkilis hit a two-run opposite-field dong, Lowrie had two hits, and Jacoby Ellsbury singled twice, stole two bases, and scored two runs.

Daisuke Matsuzaka / Ervin Santana

Last Friday night, the Red Sox rallied with a three-run eighth inning against the Blue Jays, but lost 7-6, dropping their record to a dismal 2-10. For the week since then, here are the records of the AL East teams:
Red Sox 6 1 (outscored opponents 34-16) Yankees 3 1 Rays 4 3 Orioles 2 4 Blue Jays 2 4
Boston picked up 1.5 games in the standings and is now 3.5 GB the Yankees. All four of the non-first place teams in the division are within one game of each other, so there should be a fair amount of shifting around in the next week. After the Angels series, the Red Sox head to Baltimore.

AL East: Rays/Blue Jays at 1 PM and Yankees/Orioles at 7 PM.

  1. What a relief. Even though we're still under .500 and climbing out of the hole, it's so good to enjoy baseball and have confidence in the team again.

Thanks for the focus on the recent records, it helps.

  3. If we can go 5-2 over the next 7 games:

    2 at Angels
    3 at Orioles
    2 vs Mariners

we can finish April at 13-13.

    ReplyDelete
  4. 13-13 is sounding awfully good about now.

I see Youk is back in the lineup. Good.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Finishing April at .500 would be great. Then we climb from there.

    ReplyDelete
  6. No NESN again. WTF Rogers. Why are you doing this.

(I can watch games this weekend b/c I'm home sick.)

    ReplyDelete
  7. re rogers:

tim is going to have a talk with them.

    ReplyDelete
  8. don says santana is 2-2 against the red sox in his career.

    .... deep into the stats

    ReplyDelete
  9. Rogers has the game on 3 stations - all the same Fox LA feed. *sigh*

    ReplyDelete
  10. Fox announcer just said, "I was talking to the Rem Dawg, Jerry Remy, next door, and he said Dice-K is coming off one of his best outings as a Red Sox, against the Toronto Blue Jays."

Jerry tipped him off on this hidden gem of a fact, known only to home-team announcers.

    ReplyDelete
  11. wow - does remy get some secret newsletter that gives him inside knowledge that remain unknown to everyone at fox sports?

i'm thinking the odds are even that the fox guys will try to figure out when dice is throwing the gyroball.

    ReplyDelete
  12. yanks 13, Orioles Not So Much

    ReplyDelete
  13. one fox angels guy: i ran into david ortiz before the game and he told me that the red sox had won a world series recently! we were talking about something else and he mentioned it so casually -- it shocked me -- because haven't the red sox gone a long time without winning a title ...

    other fox angels guy: 1819.

    ReplyDelete
  14. nesn seems clueless about this (nothing new as Jere will tell you!), but didn't that ball hit off abreu's glove, go into the stands, and then bounce back out on the track?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Is there anything to the fact that the Sox beat the Angels so much? (Other than we're great and they suck.) I never pay attention to "career against X team" stats, they seem totally meaningless. Is the Sox long win streak vs Angels just a fluke of a small sample size?

    ReplyDelete
  16. remy is going back and forth between santawna or santanner!

    ReplyDelete
  17. The Fox anncrs aren't calling the game at all. They are chatting while the game just goes on. Time to mute and go with MLB Audio.

(I'm not exaggerating. THey are not calling the game.)

    ReplyDelete
  18. The Abreu ball, if I saw it correctly, hit glove, then right off very top of wall, and back to field.

    ReplyDelete
  19. That's what I thought I saw too.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Is there anything to the fact that the Sox beat the Angels so much? (Other than we're great and they suck.) I never pay attention to "career against X team" stats, they seem totally meaningless. Is the Sox long win streak vs Angels just a fluke of a small sample size?

    No.

    Yes.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Go go gadget Sox!
I'm absolutely thrilled with he events of the last couple of weeks. Not only are we winning, but we're looking a lot more like the team I expected to see at the beginning of the year. And it's especially a thrill to see Beckett performing like he is.
We will be in first place by the end of May........

    ReplyDelete
  22. by the way, what is the streak?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tek

    1-for-24 (.042)
Has batted with 27 men on base
    Has zero RBI

    ReplyDelete
  24. I know one streak: our last 3 playoff games have been losses to the Angels.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm not sure. I think Sox have won 11 of the last 12.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey All. Just tuning in. CC with an RBI? Nice.

Laura, sorry you're sick, but glad you can join us.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Have ESPN gameday on while the B's game is on.

    ReplyDelete
  28. NOW:

    NYY ---
    TBR 3.0
    TOR 3.5
    BOS 4.0
    BAL 4.0

    ReplyDelete
  29. OK, where is the game?? Not on NESN because of a hockey game.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Kat, can you email me? Or email Allan and he can fwd it, whatever address you have.

    ReplyDelete
  31. gotta find your NESN+ channel

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes, just heard it: 11 out of 12.

    ReplyDelete
  33. SHIT SHIT SHIT

Ryan Kalish, who injured his left shoulder diving for a ball on Thursday while playing for Triple A Pawtucket, has a partially torn labrum that could require season-ending surgery according to a source close to the outfielder.

    ReplyDelete
  34. EB (Extra Bases, not Evil Bert): "The Sox have won six of seven and are 11-1 against the Angels since the start of last season."

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks, Jere! I never can remember where it is. But I found it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. My sense that we play well vs. LAA was rather compromised in the 2008 postseason.

    ReplyDelete
  37. more from abraham:

"Kalish has started in a rehabilitation program and will be evaluated in 2-3 weeks. If the tear in his shoulder does not respond to treatment, surgery would be the next step.

The Red Sox described the injury as a “significant sprain” after Kalish was examined in Boston on Friday."

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hopefully your NESN plus channel is in HD, unlike mine! Fortunately that hockey game's almost over.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ahh, hockey. Caps won today to win the series. Yipee!

    ReplyDelete
  40. It went to OT Jere, full intermission and then however long it takes until hopefully the Bruins score.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The other night it went OT and there was a score right away, just in time for the start of the Sox--almost got screwed that night. Definitely screwed tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  42. See? You will never catch him!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Now Evil Bert has done something

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yes, my NESN plus is in HD. I am thankful for that.

Wow, now I remember what's it's like when the Sox get hits!! So much more enjoyable. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Now THIS is the way to start an inning

    ReplyDelete
  46. A "vote mob" in Nova Scotia is tweeting a wmtc post. Massive numbers of people are mobbing wmtc.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Why did I think there was only 1 out? I must be distracted......
(translation - I am not watching this game at home :) )

    ReplyDelete
  48. Wow Laura - it must be satisfying to know that so many people are tuned in to what you believe so strongly in

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hey, SoSock! I mentioned you last night (I think it was last night) comparing the Angel's defense to your Little Leaguers.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Laura, I have no idea what that means, but is it a good thing?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I thought Dice just gave up back to back to back dongs--oh wait, it's cuz I'm watching the game at Chippendales.

    ReplyDelete
  52. it sounds negative.

it is probably the latest post about a bunch of harper supporters deliberately drowning out a reporter's question so the shithead did not have to answer it

    ReplyDelete
  53. Who is that guy pitching for us, and what did he do to DiceK? Not that I am complaining.

    ReplyDelete
  54. No, no, it's a very good thing. It's a big bunch of young people getting excited about voting! They are sharing a bunch of anti-Conservative info, and got a hold of a post of mine.

    ReplyDelete
  55. That's great, Laura! It must be a great feeling, knowing you are having an impact.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thank you SoSock, it is gratifying. :)

    This is the post: here.

    ReplyDelete
  57. thanks amy, yes!

this is dice-k's second good start in a row. you may have missed the other one b/c of Passover.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes, I didn't see it, but I did read and hear about it. Even on Passover I keep up with the games. :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I wish I could think of something to add to Jere's Chippendale comment... Maybe if Wang was pitching.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Is Chippendales even still around??

    ReplyDelete
  61. Wow, who's the guy they snuck into Dice-K's uniform? 2-0 in the fourth? Woohoo!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Matsuzaka through 3: 5 fly outs, 4 strikeouts, no ground outs. Sucks about Kalish.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Well sure Amy, I mean after all, it's only religion. Can't compete with baseball! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  64. BB? Was this a bad time to tune in?

    ReplyDelete
  65. TARDY ON THE CUT was last inning.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Wow, 10 innings, 2 hits, and 5 base runners? Go, Dice-K, go!

    ReplyDelete
  67. A-Rod passed Manny for career GS. Damn.

    ReplyDelete
  68. manny had 21, so slappy has 22, and gehrig 23?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Amy, do you keep Passover? I am getting sick of matzo and there are 3 days to go.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Wow, I like this Dice guy. Where did he come from?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Yes, Chippendales are still around. I taught a case about them this year in my trademark law class.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Yes, Rick, we do. Separate dishes and the whole shebang. I try to eat as little matzoh as possible though---just lots of fruit, veggies, etc.---to avoid the stomach issues matzah gives me!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Make that 8 flyouts and 4 strikeouts. We must not even be close to the record. Anyone know what it is? (most flyouts, 9 inning game)

    ReplyDelete
  74. How did LBJ get on? I was away for a min.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Batters faced by Dice in each inning of last 2 starts:

    443 333 3
    353 4

    Nice short innings!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Jacoby hit a solid line drive up the middle.

Scioscia must be dying inside watching the Red Sox steal bases.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I grew up keeping Passover w/ separate dishes and the whole thing too. It spoiled me for the "eat the same but add matzah" or "keep Passover in the home but eat what you want outside" thing.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I agree with Evil Bert. That's a check swing.

    ReplyDelete
  79. We keep it in and out. In fact, we don't eat out during Passover for just that reason.

    ReplyDelete
  80. when he scowls, his eyebrows get really slanted.

    ReplyDelete
  81. At my dad's house. Mother-in-law having Easter/Passover celebration. Shopping list was funny. "Matzah, ham, rolls". I will NOT be eating ham and cheese on Matzah.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Can someone explain the separate dishes

    YOUK!!!!!!!

    thing to me?

    ReplyDelete
  83. why oh ewe ewe ewe ewe ewe kay

    ReplyDelete
  84. I didn't think that ball was anywhere close to leaving the park. Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Matzah, ham, rolls, I love it. True multiculturalism.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Separate dishes are so no non-kosher-for-passover food goes on passover dishes. Passover dishes only for Passover food. You change all the dishes, pots, kitchen ware, to stuff that you only use that one week every year.

    ReplyDelete
  87. We keep it in and out, but have relaxed our rules. Don't worry about other people's dishes, etc.

Changing subjects, it's nice to have baseball on after the kids are in bed. Doesn't happen much in California.

    ReplyDelete
  88. 2 OT coming up in the Bruins game.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Kat, sort of hard to do this briefly. But the laws of kashruth (keeping kosher) require two sets of dishes, pots and pans, etc., during the year, one for meat and one for dairy. Then during the 8 days of Passover you need to have another set of dishes for each because you are not supposed to use dishes or utensils that were used to cook food that is not kosher for Passover, like pasta, rice, bread, beans, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  90. the vending machine here at work is calling me, but i am wary. last sunday, i put a $10 bill in it and nothing happened. (i should be getting my $ back next friday.)

    ReplyDelete
  91. double overtime in the hockey game. more non-HD time for me. goddammit.

    ReplyDelete
  92. How long will you be in ATL for, Rick?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Thanks L. Is Passover the only time that non-Kosher folks follow a Kosher diet?

    ReplyDelete
  94. Not so hard to explain (see my comment above) :)

    ReplyDelete
  95. I saw Hank Conger's name on a lineup, not knowing him, and thought to myself it was reminiscent of some player from 80-100 years back. And yet...he's Korean!

    ReplyDelete
  96. I asked that question before reading Amy's response. Now I'm confused. I'll read up on it later. Thanks, though.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Kat, everyone does their own thing. Some people always follow the rules, some don't. Some follow them strictly, some don't. Like everything else in life!

    ReplyDelete
  98. the laws of kashruth

I like the laws of baberuth: alcohol, red meat, and unbridled hedonism.

    ReplyDelete
  99. You can keep Passover and not keep kosher. "Kosher for Passover" is something else. My family and many families we knew were not kosher (although we didn't eat pork, but that was a holdover from how my parents were raised). But we observed Passover dietary laws. It was considered a very special time, important enough to do that - I mean, it's only 8 days, it's not really difficult to be strict about it.

    ReplyDelete
  100. This is all past tense for me, as an adult I became non-observant (on purpose, not out of laziness).

    ReplyDelete
  101. Sweet Jesus. A three strikeout OTT for Dice-K?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Heading home Monday. Nice starting pitching, MatsuzaKKKKKKKa! Still no groundouts through 5.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Thinking of it as part of the Kosher laws makes it more confusing. Just think of Passover as having laws unto itself.

    ReplyDelete
  104. The Babe Ruth laws would kill most normal humans.

    ReplyDelete
  105. re what rick said: there have been games where the 1B never touches the ball, but they are pretty rare.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I mean, it's only 8 days, it's not really difficult to be strict about it.

Easy to say if you aren't stuck eating matzah and not eating bread and pasta for a whole 8 days! :)

Actually, it's not really that bad, but I do miss having my cereal in the morning, and a pizza would sure be nice!

    ReplyDelete
  107. Hell, Keith Richards might have had trouble keeping up with Babe.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Easy to say because I did it every year until I was 20. I never thought it was such a big deal, I enjoyed it.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Boy, he is fast! He got to 2d faster than I could type CC!

    ReplyDelete
  110. And Keith wasn't setting records in sports during his wild days.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I DON'T BELIEVE ... WHAT I JUST SAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  112. An RBI for TEK! As I live and breathe...

    ReplyDelete
  113. first RBI for tek since June 29 of last year.

    wtf?

    ReplyDelete
  114. It is TOTALLY fun! Nothing sort of about it!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Tek saves his average from going negative!

    ReplyDelete
  116. first RBI for tek since June 29 of last year.

    Srsly???

And some people wonder why we are down on him...

    ReplyDelete
  117. Tek saves his average from going negative!

    Okay, THAT is FUNNY. Hahahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Dice K has the weed pipe going.

    ReplyDelete
  119. This team actually resembles the real Red Sox.

    ReplyDelete
  120. "sort of fun"

Mainers tend to be cautious, laura. Sort of cautious.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Man, I get up to brush my teeth and I miss a lot.

Time for me to shut the computer down. I'll be listening.

    Good night all.

Happy Easter, Happy Passover, Happy Day.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Well, we in the rest of Joy Nation have been having fun for a while now. Come join us! :)

    ReplyDelete
  123. Is it my TV or do Don and Jerry look really tan?

    ReplyDelete
  124. Good night, Kat, and have a great Easter.

    ReplyDelete
  125. ah shit, an assist.

    **

teams playing 9 innings with no assists

    cleveland against mfy
    july 4, 1945

    mets against phillies
    june 25, 1988

i think a team did it in 1997

    ***

royals recorded 24 PO (a home win) with no assists in 2009, first time that happened since the rays did it in 2003.

    ReplyDelete
  126. the ad for the Ultimate Red Sox Show said, "from the ballpark to batting practice..."

Don't they know batting practice takes place IN the ballpark?

    ReplyDelete
  127. I'm cooping too--I have an Easter basket full of student papers to read tomorrow. 'Night all.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I don't have NESN tonight but last time I saw them I said "tanning booth". Either that or too much makeup! I hope hit's makeup, since Jerry had cancer, he should know better.

    ReplyDelete
  129. in the intro they do right before the game, remy always looks strangely tan or like a wax figure.

when they show him in the booth during the game, he looks normal.

    ReplyDelete
  130. "from the this to the that..."

    ad copy writers' favourite

    ReplyDelete
  131. I'll assume makeup. It sure doesn't look natural.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I didn't think they had gotten that much time to go to the beach while in SOCAL.

    ReplyDelete
  133. plus he is trying to smile while don talks and intros him ... he should give up trying to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  134. remy doesn't seem like the type to go out and get some sun.

    ReplyDelete
  135. ""from the this to the that..."

    ad copy writers' favourite"

actually, speaking of that, there's a NYLife ad running now where they use a "from" but there's no "to"! I've listened closely to it every time to make sure I'm not missing anything, but nope, it's "from this, this, this, this..." and then it just goes on to something else with no "to."

    ReplyDelete
  136. It can't be sun - to go from Don's pasty white to a deep tan? They haven't been in Cali that long!

    ReplyDelete
  137. Yeah, that pre-game fake smile is dreadful.

    ReplyDelete
  138. whatever he's doing between starts or during starts -- keep doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  139. So what did DiceK learn/do/change since that awful game that he has become more effective? Is he finally listening to the Sox coaching staff?

    ReplyDelete
  140. Jere, I like to listen to ad copy and see if it actually makes any sense or is even a sentence. Radio ads especially seem to make no sense.

    ReplyDelete
  141. They talked about not having Dice do his long toss and side session on the same day. But then I never read much about it.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Wow, nine Ks! Has he ever had this many? Or this many with this few walks?

    ReplyDelete
  143. last 2 starts:

    14 innings
    2 hits
    0 runs
    4 walks
    12 strikeouts

    ReplyDelete
  144. I'm gonna lose the computer for a while. See you later for dirty h20.

    ReplyDelete
