G21: Red Sox 7, Angels 0

Red Sox - 300 012 100 - 7 11 0
Angels - 000 000 000 - 0 6 0
Boston swept its first four-game series in Anaheim in nearly 31 years as John Lackey (8-6-0-1-6, 108) continued the Red Sox's starters' remarkable run of dominance. Only four Angels runners travelled beyond first base.

In the last nine games, Boston starters have a microscopic 0.88 ERA (six earned runs in 61.1 innings).

The Red Sox have won five straight games and eight of their last nine games since April 15, outscoring their opponents 46-16, and improving their record from 2-10 to 10-11.

In those eight wins, Boston has allowed 1, 1, 1, 3, 2, 3, 0, and 0 runs.

Five of the first six Red Sox batters reached base in the first inning. Jacoby Ellsbury doubled and scored on Adrian Gonzalez's one-out double. Kevin Youkilis walked, David Ortiz singled in Gonzalez, and Mike Cameron's fielder's choice brought Yook home. Carl Crawford hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

Gonzalez went 3-for-5, and Ellsbury, Crawford, and Marco Scutaro each had two hits. AG and Crawford drove in two runs apiece, and Scutaro scored twice.

After enjoying a day off tomorrow, the Red Sox play three games at Camden Yards before heading home for 11 games against the Mariners (3), Angels (4), and Twins (4).
Example
John Lackey / Matt Palmer

Boston wakes up this morning tied for third place in the AL East.
Yankees 11 6 .647 ---
Rays 10 11 .476 3.0
Red Sox 9 11 .450 3.5
Blue Jays 9 11 .450 3.5
Orioles 8 11 .421 4.0
It's the highest in the standings the Red Sox have been this year.

Boston is 7-1 over the last eight games, and the starting pitchers have a 1.01 ERA. Lackey's one outing in that stretch was last Tuesday in Oakland; he allowed one run and four hits in six innings.

Lackey's ERA for the season is 9.82 (14.2 innings) and opponents are batting .323 against him, with a .677 slugging percentage (nearly 100 points worse than any other starter). Lackey has given up an extra-base hit to one out of every five batters he had faced this year.

(Fact) Check, Please:
Tom Singer, MLB.com: "Is it too late for Red Sox Nation to revive that "100 or Bust!" chant, a reference to winning in triple figures, which the Red Sox have never done?
Except for 1912, 1915, and 1946, yes, they've never done it.

AL East: Rays/Blue Jays at 1 PM and Yankees/Orioles at 1:30 PM.

  1. Follow-up to the post about the Smithsonian's painting of Pedro, I received an email from the artist, Susan Miller-Havens, who wanted to clear up any confusion about what Pedro is wearing in the painting.

She said she portrayed Martinez in a white Red Sox uniform, with a blue cap with a dark red "B". She removed the American League patch on his right sleeve and replaced it with the flag of the Dominican Republic.

One out of how many batters?

  3. Thanks for the info on the Pedro painting. Maybe a follow-up post? Did the artist say anything else, any Pedro nuggets?

No other info. We had discussed what uniform it was in comments, and she wanted to make sure we knew. I think it may have been a problem in a few media outlets.

  6. Normal day off for Lowrie. PA says Tito wants to keep Scutaro sharp and Palmer is tough on LHB (though Lowrie is a switch-hitter).

  12. No real delay after all. I'm not threading today, at least not for an hour or so. Go Sox!

  14. Okay let's talk serious about this painting. The "AL logo" thing says the picture used is from 2001 (100-yr anniversary). But after looking at shots of Pedro from various years, I found he only wore that unique style of sneaker in 1998, his first year in Boston. (The fact that it couldn't have been 2001 is also proven by the fact that this page says she did the painting in 2000.)

Her site says something about using a Michael Ponzini photo since she couldn't get the same good shots with her own camera "at Fenway." And she tells you it's the home white Sox uni. HOWEVER--I've looked at enough baseball card shots to know pics taken from the Yankee Stadium third base camera well to believe that's one of them. First of all, Pedro has a stripe on his sleeve in the painting. This is the ROAD uniform, not the home white as she says. The white uni has no sleeve stripe. Second, check all of Pedro's 1999 (photos from '98) Topps baseball cards (I use ebay for this). Ponzini was a Topps photographer so this is probably his work. In those shots, it's always Yankee Stadium, and Pedro has the same goatee and blue turtleneck with elbow-length sleeves as the painting. ( example, almost identical pose)(another example ) ( another which shows the shoes ) She did alter/tighten up Pedro's sleeve, which he always cut--you can see how wide it is in photos (or flapping in the wind in action shots).

  15. (That was supposed to be a pre-game comment but my research extended into game time, sorry--just throw that comment into the first painting post instead if you want.)

    Can't do that in blogger.

  17. STFU Lackey, you're already lucky that Abreu didn't take you out of the park.

  18. I don't understand. It's a painting, not a photograph.

    ReplyDelete
  19. They can't fit Salty's name on the scoreboard. Says "Saltlamaci"

    ReplyDelete
  20. It's a painting of a photograph by Michael Ponzini.

    ReplyDelete
  21. "In this case sports photographer MIchael Ponzini lent the artist numerous photos to enable her to find what she could not by means of her own camera at Fenway."

(Which I guess could mean her painting in an amalgam. Because that one card I linked is very close, she could have made him face more to the side or whatever.)

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's a painting of Pedro. In order to not make Pedro sit for hours on end, the artist uses a photograph as a guide. But she is not painting a photograph.

I believe this is fairly standard for portrait painting. The idea is for the painting to represent the person in a way that people will admire, enjoy, appreciate and recognize, not to duplicate any particular photograph.

  23. All three down by way of the K!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Not saying I disapprove of the process, I'm just saying this is Pedro in the road uniform, and if she made it in 2000, she couldn't have been changing an "AL logo" because it hadn't been invented yet.

  25. Holy shit, Jere, that's an impressive piece of historical research. Do you know William Frassanito's work with Civil War photos? Your posts reminded me of it.

  38. Been busy all game. May watch when it's archived latee tonight.

Looks like Lackey is being the man.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Crawford is so totally not being the man.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I had mistakenly thought it was Crawford that hit into the DP when it was Cameron (not paying too close attention). First HR of the year for CC.

  41. I have to go back to not threading.

This is well on the way to being a great sweep, and the Sox are well on their way to their climb to first place.

  45. Fruitbat blew another save. BB to start the 9th, then two outs, then a single and a double. Unfortunately, the Os are unlikely to get 3 to tie in the bottom of the 11th.

  46. 7 more shutout innings for a Sox starter

    ReplyDelete
  47. So the ERA of the starters over the last nine games is sub-1.00. Amazing.
