G41: Red Sox 8, Orioles 7

Orioles - 201 021 100 - 7 10 2
Red Sox - 000 005 102 - 8 15 0
It was like a doubleheader. In Game 1, Matsuzaka was demoralizing (4.1-5-5-7-2, 106) while Tillman handcuffed the Sox (5-5-0-3-2, 88). In the middle of the sixth, Baltimore led 6-0.

Then Buck Showalter went to his bullpen and Game 2 began.

The Red Sox immediately torched three relievers for five runs, closed the gap to one run again in the seventh, and, after wasting a prime scoring opportunity in the eighth, won the game when Adrian Gonzalez drove a two-run double off the Wall with one out in the bottom of the ninth.

Deep down in Florida, the Rays beat the Yankees 6-5, so Boston (21-20) is now in a three-team tie for second place with Toronto (21-20) and New York (20-19).

Red Sox 6th: Orioles 6-0, M Gonzalez pitching. Drew singled, took second on LF error. Lowrie doubled, 1-6. Crawford safe on 3B error. Varitek singled (7 pitches), 2-6. Ellsbury lined out to LF. Accardo pitching. Pedroia flied out to CF. Gonzalez singled, 3-6. Youkilis doubled, 5-6. Rapada pitching. Ortiz walked. Drew grounded out to 2B.

Red Sox 7th: Orioles 7-5, Johnson pitching. Lowrie tripled (8 pitches). Crawford K. Varitek singled, 6-7. Ellsbury singled. Pedroia lined out to LF. Gonzalez K.

Red Sox 8th: Orioles 7-6, Uehara pitching. Youkilis doubled. Ortiz grounded out to 2B. Drew BBI. Lowrie K. Crawford popped out to 2B.

Red Sox 9th: Orioles 7-6, Gregg pitching. Varitek flied out to LF. Ellsbury singled. Ellsbury stole second. Pedroia walked (9 pitches). Gonzalez doubled, 8-7.

Example
Chris Tillman / Daisuke Matsuzaka

And now ... how about one game over .500, please!

Jerry Remy will be on NESN for the first time since April 26.

Only one Red Sock has more than two plate appearances against Tillman. Carl Crawford is 6-for-12, with a double and two triples. Here is what the Os have done against Dice.

AL East: Yankees/Rays at 6:30 PM and Blue Jays/Tigers at 7 PM.

    That is amazing......Thanks

  5. The guy who was trying to get the Padres to stop the military-themed events sent it to me. (He also was calling AG Bert last season!)

    ReplyDelete
  6. Tito: If you would've asked me in spring training if I'd have been happy to be .500 on May 16, I'd have probably said "No", but since we started out 2-[10], the answer is "Yes". (More here)

    Spooky!

    ReplyDelete
  8. LACKEY ON DL!!!!!!!!!!!!

    PRAISE THE LORD!

    ReplyDelete
  9. That gif of EB/Ichiro is very cool!

    ReplyDelete
  10. So just what is Lackey's disability? Inability to pitch?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I have to say that I am glad not to be at Fenway tonight. YUCK.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I am so sick of the rain. We're expecting rain all week here. For a change 'nt.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Here also. Somehow we managed to avoid it on the Cape all weekend, but everywhere else in MA was apparently awful.

Fortunately it is good weather for grading exams.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Laura, did you get the link on pit bulls I sent to you through FB?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Uch. Not a good start for DiceK.

    ReplyDelete
  16. No, I didn't. I'm not on FB at all now. I have it set up to get notifications, but it hasn't come yet. Thanks for thinking of me!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Why can't Dice do anything against the O's at all?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Lee with a 5 game hit streak coming into the game:

    5 for 21 -- .238!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Maybe Timmy should have started this game.

    ReplyDelete
  20. OK, I can try and send it to your email instead if you don't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'll get it eventually, but in general, email is the way to go.

    ReplyDelete
  22. This game may be an unwatchable DiceK disaster.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yeah, it was a link someone put on on FB so it was just easier to share through FB.

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's no problem, I appreciate you thinking of me and my bully boy obsession. I see quite a bit of them in Diego.

    ReplyDelete
  25. might have to pull out the tarp in the 2nd or so and declare the game a washout.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think a rain cancellation is the best we can hope for at this point. Is is still the top of the first?

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's raining men

    ... on base.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Waaaay too early for that talk.

    ReplyDelete
  29. OK, only two behind. Let's hope DiceK gets his act together before the second inning.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks Amy! I know that one well. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Cute photos! A friend with a pit bull mix posted the link.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Either there is vaseline on all the cameras or it is really miserable out there.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Bases loaded. Look's like the foot's on the other hand now.

    ReplyDelete
  34. can a fire burn in the rain?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Amy told you not to do that! Please listen to her next time!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I keep wiping my glasses, hoping the picture would clear.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I guess that's what hi-def does.

    ReplyDelete
  38. IMO Varitek needs to be told to retire, his BA is unacceptable.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Lackey has been put on the DL.

    ReplyDelete
  40. http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/this-just-in/21102436/lackey-disabled-list-elbow-strain

    ReplyDelete
  41. Atchinson called up, I assume Wake will start tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Lackey has been put on the DL.

As previously noted in this thread.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Did Vlad ever see a pitch he didn't swing at?

    ReplyDelete
  44. A nod to what Jere (I think) said yesterday about hitting the ball after it bounces.

Geez, how long can Vlad keep hitting?

    ReplyDelete
  45. If I were the Orioles I would not swing at *anything* right now.

    ReplyDelete
  46. And somehow the lame Vlad comes in to score. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  47. ASDJALKSDASLKDJASLKDJASDAS

    FUCK NESN!!!!!

They just showed THREE fucking commercials in the middle of that last AB!!!!!!!!!

I'm at my dad's house, and quickly checked the non HD receiver and it appears that the feed on that one was fine.

    ReplyDelete
  48. And to reiterate Amy's previous comment, this non HD TV looks WAY better. Way less vasoliney.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Tim, WTF? We have NESN and we didn't get that?!

It sounds like what EEI was doing on Friday!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yeah, the regular feed appeared fine.

But right as dice-k went into the windup, BMW, Jeep and Roger Daltrey performing Tommy commericals, then it went back right as the RBI occurred.

Now my dad is all confused by my yelling/swearing at NESN.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Streaming NESN was fine, no commercials. I see no problems with the HD here either.

    ReplyDelete
  52. tim - you are seeing fewer dice pitches. be glad.

    ReplyDelete
  53. BTW I've been watching the games in silence, lurking some of the threads. I saw your comments about friday's game - totally unacceptable. I realize they want to ram as much advertising down our throats as possible, but for fuck sakes show the game when its ON!

I fear that its going to get to the point where there's going to be a tiered system, where its like 15 bucks for MLB Audio with ads during 50% of the game, and like 60 bucks for "MLB PREMIUM AUDIO" so you can hear the game without ads.

    Fuck greed.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I thought the dog had changed the channel, but I definitely confirmed two or three times that it was NESN.

Maybe its a Maine thing? (The satellite here is registered to a Maine address)

    ReplyDelete
  55. You know I agree! But I think the EEI thing was a production fuckup. When the commercials ended, Castig was talking in mid-sentence, the inning was going on as if nothing had happened. The guys in the booth clearly didn't know anything about it.

It happened FOUR times during the game - twice in one inning!!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Our resident Mainer is Goldfine, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't have NESN HD.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Going to eat food, be back later.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Beavis with a tough inning vs. TB. They have a 5-run sixth going. 6-5 Rays.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Pretty neat play by the pitcher. Too bad it's their pitcher.

    ReplyDelete
  60. That was crazy good fortune for the ball to find his glove. But he did have his glove there. It was nice.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Three stolen bases so far? I'd like to see Tek's release times compared with earlier years. It looks like it takes him forever to get the ball out of his glove now.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hi Charlie, long time no see. Although I don't thread every game, so maybe you were here when I wasn't.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Are we not allowed to go over .500???

(Not that I'm predicting a loss...)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Lowrie looked not so smooth on that dive.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Great, game is out of reach now.

    ReplyDelete
  66. We've definitely proven several times now that some people watching NESN can see pitches that others miss due to commercials. So it has to do with the individual providers. I'm guessing they each have their own automated systems, which often fuck up.

I've had local ads "accidentally" pop up during the action, and once they start, you know they're gonna run their course and that you ARE missing pitches. A horrible feeling.

But ultimately NESN should be held responsible--they should make all the providers they work with get it right, it shouldn't be up to us to tell them all how to do their jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'don't know about the Paw Sox Rotation but Bowden or Doubrount could also be called up to start tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  68. MFY - 020 030 0
    FKR - 000 105

    ReplyDelete
  69. Atchison replaced Lackey, so who would Doubront replace?

Bowden is now a reliever - all 14 of his appearances have been out of the pen.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Rich Hill could get the start if they don't want to go with Wake.

    ReplyDelete
  71. That may have been an HR if he dosn't catch that.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hill's pitch counts this year have been 16, 18, 15 and 20. He's not a starter either.

    ReplyDelete
  73. He used to be a starter I'd be surprised if he still can't.

    ReplyDelete
  74. He lasted started in 2009. Granted, he'd still probably do better than Lackey, but I'll get the start tomorrow before Hill does.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Not everything can be fixed by "get rid of him".

    ReplyDelete
  76. I imagine they will stitch something together. Hopefully some good Wake, a few from Aceves, maybe 2 from Albers.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Has anyone ever looked at the Red Sox FB fan pages? Papi, Youk and Lester are a few that maintain theirs.

    ReplyDelete
  78. No FB, but a few have Twitter. Ellsbury, Salty, ???. I think Salty gave up after a few days.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Everyone who said the game was over is not allowed to enjoy this.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Coming back! Did Amy and Kat turn off their TVs??

    ReplyDelete
  81. FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(too bad this game is over)

    ReplyDelete
  82. i did not think bert would score...

    ReplyDelete
  83. try another pitcher, buck!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Ok now this is a game again..

    ReplyDelete
  85. I forgot about the O's bullpen or lack thereof.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Great, game is out of reach now.

Ok now this is a game again..
    May 16, 2011 9:59 PM

    Funny how that happens....

    ReplyDelete
  87. of course, we ARE still losing ...

    ReplyDelete
  88. And after all that, I still find it within myself to be disappointed in Drew's ground out.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Too late with the Drew advice.

    ReplyDelete
  90. O's pitcher Gonzalez must be quite pissed about those errors.

    ReplyDelete
  91. i'm confused: is the game over again?

    RAYS 6, MFY 5

    ReplyDelete
  92. I was out of contact for a little. Got back to GDGD in time to follow the comeback. I am now back to the tv but posting on the phone.

Yay to the big inning. Boo to that dong.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I never said the game is over, I said it was out of reach then (meaning that it can't be tied with one swing).

    ReplyDelete
  94. I take it I was the only one who saw a Wes' Rib House commercial instead of that home run....

    ReplyDelete
  95. oh please.

saying the game is out of reach means that with the score as it currently is means that the red sox cannot come back - the other's teams run total is out of reach -- meaning that the game should be considered a loss.

with the way the sox have come back in so many games in recent years, down by five runs with five innings to go does not = a loss.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Those 2 were not exactly on the same page there ( Tek and Aceves)

    ReplyDelete
  97. Hey guys any ish sightongs this year or does he have another name?

    ReplyDelete
  98. ish is now rob. he has been around a little. probably busy with the bruins now.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Usually it's a strip club commercial in Providence, I've found.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Bogar fails to get Jed thrown out at home. Little steps.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Bogar - only because Jed disobeyed, probably.

    TEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Jere-- did you see the triple?

    ReplyDelete
  103. tek has 2 of his 5 rbi tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  104. Now it's our turn to put the game out of reach!

    ReplyDelete
  105. "Usually it's a strip club commercial in Providence, I've found."

Club Fantasies. Or whatever. Seen that one, too. (By the way, I rewound my DVR and recorded the missed HR--when they got back from the Rib House, the guy was between third and home. I will YouTube it. And if NESN complains and says "you can't show our home runs," I'll say "what home run???")

    ReplyDelete
  106. the guy we want up ... is up.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Oh wow, that was only the second out of the inning. Nice.

    ReplyDelete
  108. OK, I have returned. Had to take my eyes off the screen for a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Let this be the night we score in the double digits.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Vlad certainly having fun tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  111. scott 0-for-0 tonight -- he doesn't exist.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Vin Mazzaro has given up fourteen runs tonight in 2.1 innings for KCR. That's twice as many as the Sox altogether.

    ReplyDelete
  113. sweet carolinian rally upcoming

    ReplyDelete
  114. How did that happen? The 10-run inning was the 4th. So that wasn't the starter?

    ReplyDelete
  115. Now THIS is an out of reach game; Spiders 19, Royals 1 in the 6th.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Tek/Aceves is a deadly combination right now.

The MFY lost, so we will be tied with them if we win.

    ReplyDelete
  117. so the KC pitcher stayed in for the entire 10 run inning and then was sent out for more?????????

    ReplyDelete
  118. Damn, I thought that was GONE.

But I will take a double!

    ReplyDelete
  119. Youk can get out the rally caps!

    ReplyDelete
  120. plenty of sweat on a chilly rainy night.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Remy actually described that as "back to back doubles for Kevin Youkilis"

    ReplyDelete
  122. I will take a sac fly to tie it.

    ReplyDelete
  123. if this goes into extras, showalter may have some a bullpen shortage. he's using his 5th reliever now.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Pitching around Drew to get to Lowrie. Allrightythen.

    ReplyDelete
  125. They'd rather pitch to Lowrie? Make them pay, Jedi!

    ReplyDelete
  126. wait - another runner on base AND a better hitter at the plate?

    thanks buck!!!

    ReplyDelete
  127. NESN didn't keep track of the count on that intentional walk. As if it's just automatically a walk, with none of the pitches counting.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Let's keep it going.

And let's get Varitek to .200...

    ReplyDelete
  129. I'll take a long scrotum right about now.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Wait, that first pitch to Lowrie was a strike?

    ReplyDelete
  131. oh wait, no, it's just that their ball-strike thing is broken

    ReplyDelete
  132. OK, the rest of you are also confused by the IBB to Drew. I thought I just was missing something.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Arrggh.

Time for CC to get a dong at Fenway.

    ReplyDelete
  134. So Buck's a genius, is he? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  135. Someone tell Crawford it's the 11th inning so he can hit a "walk off" double.

    ReplyDelete
  136. loft that to left, Jed, and the game woulda been tied right now

    ReplyDelete
  137. not a walkoff chance, but big time for the craw

    ReplyDelete
  138. Well now I just want a long dong.

    ReplyDelete
  139. I might be projecting, but Crawford's body language seems awful. It's like he's already told himself he can't do it.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Ah well. We'll have to do it in the 9th.

    ReplyDelete
  141. no sea cruise for the sox off uehara.

    ReplyDelete
  142. I was about to say that Max, CC seems to be taking his hands off the swing.

    ReplyDelete
  143. You mean no C-C-cruise. Oo-ie, Oo-ie baby...

    ReplyDelete
  144. CC definitely seems to be pushing too hard.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Love this first pitch swinging.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I'm sure *someone* can find the stats on this. Our sac fly numbers seem way down this year. I think we've has plenty of opportunity, just not getting it done.

    ReplyDelete
  147. well, aceves ain't pitching tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  148. "I might be projecting, but Crawford's body language seems awful. It's like he's already told himself he can't do it."

I was gonna suggest he may need glasses.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Nice one, K. Before tonight, Sox have only 6 sac flies, tied for fewest in AL.

    ReplyDelete
  150. Third inning for Aceves. He might as well have started the game!

    ReplyDelete
  151. Get to the Mendoza line, Tek.

    ReplyDelete
  152. This may be the case of wine talking, but I'm calling a Tek Dong!

    ReplyDelete
