That was a drag, but then the Red Sox batted in the seventh.
The last time the Red Sox scored 10 or more runs in an inning was May 7, 2009, when they scored 12 runs in the sixth inning against Cleveland. They scored all 12 runs before making an out, setting a new American League record and tying the MLB record. Tonight, seven of the nine batters in the starting lineup had at least one hit, one run, and one RBI.
The Red Sox also continued their first-inning torment of starting pitchers. In the last five games, Boston batters have seen a total of 175 pitches in their first time at bat (33, 44, 13, 46, 39).
Wade LeBlanc / Andrew Miller
Miller, 26, was a first round pick of the Tigers in the 2006 amateur draft (6th pick overall). He signed on August 8, 2006, and made his major league debut 22 days later. Miller had a 5.69 ERA in parts of two seasons with Detroit and was traded to the Marlins (as part of the Miguel Cabrera deal) after the 2007 season. He had a 5.89 ERA with the Fish in 2008-10. Boston acquired Miller last November.
Miller has always walked too many batters, but in his last three starts for Pawtucket, he issued only one walk while striking out 22. Maybe he figured something out, or maybe it's simply a fluke. (In May, however, he walked 22 and fanned 27.) Or maybe it's because of his new pre-game routine:
I go out with [pitching coach] Rich Sauveur maybe 10 or 15 minutes earlier than most guys would and get loose like you would before the game. Then I sit down with Rich and the catcher and do a mini half-inning where we sit down for 4 or 5 minutes and talk and maybe go over the lineup a little bit. Then I get up and try to simulate game speed and simulate hitters and maybe work out some kinks that generally I've had to battle in the first inning. By the time I go out and pitch in the real first inning, it feels like it would in the second or third inning. So far it's been great. I think it's accomplished everything we were hoping it would, and I've gone out there and felt aggressive and in the zone to start the game.LeBlanc, who is also 26 and also a lefty, has made two starts this season: April 24 against the Phillies and June 14 against the Rockies. He was recalled from Tucson (AAA) last week when Aaron Harang went on the disabled list.
The Red Sox have played three three-game series against the Padres. In each series, Boston won the first and third games, while dropping the second.
June 18-20, 2002 at San Diego: 4-2, 2-3, 5-0 June 8-10, 2004 at Boston: 1-0, 1-8, 9-3 June 22-24, 2007 at San Diego: 2-1, 1-6, 4-2AL East: Yankees/Reds at 7 PM; Rays/Brewers at 8 PM. (Not that you asked, but the Red Sox's magic number for clinching the division is 91.)

ReplyDeleteSo happy to be home and watching this game! I missed yesterday's game completely, didn't even see the score til it was over. I've had a long, tiring 4 days. Hooray for baseball!
ReplyDeletemiller time!
ReplyDeleteMaybe he's a distant relative of mine. We have two different branches of Millers in our family.
ReplyDeleteAlso: the all-trades team.
wade will not (le)blanc us.
ReplyDelete3 GAME HITTING STREAK!!! (bingo)
ReplyDeleteLet it Flo!
ReplyDeletebeautiful at bat
ReplyDeletePAPI: ffbbffbffffff 1B*
ReplyDeleteBases filled with red sox. Is that on the bingo card? I'm not at my computer.
ReplyDeleteno, though "got something going is"
ReplyDeleteMFY - 400
ReplyDeleteCIN - 10
Laura, I looked into our internet usage. WOW!
ReplyDeleteWe have been around 200 per month. We were over 300 in April. It will be interesting to see how much it goes down once our son is off to college.
I guess you can't watch the games with your limits, though.
Papi!!!
ReplyDeletePAPI!! Youk's ankle is hurting.
ReplyDeleteanother "first-2-out-rally"
ReplyDeleteI love Dave Roberts...and his smile is amazing!
ReplyDeleteHoudini opportunity for Miller.
ReplyDeleteleadoff 3B = wasted
ReplyDeleteroberts - i love you, but stay out of the booth!
yeah! Leadoff triple, no run. I like it.
ReplyDeleteCommercial: Michael Jordan trying to bring the Hitler mustache back into vogue?
ReplyDeleteHey Kat, thanks for that. Yes, that's why the 1 game we watched online ended up costing us about $50. It does use a ton of bandwidth!
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the Starters Pulverized by the Boston Lineup support group, Wade LeBlanc!
ReplyDelete$50 to watch a game online...crazy.
ReplyDeleteDoes Wake get into the Hall if he finishes with more wins than Cy and the TCM ?
ReplyDeleteWakefield:
ReplyDeleteOut - Cooperstown HoF
In - Red Sox HoF
Well yeah, but it's not like anyone was actually charging us $50 to watch a game. They don't care what we use the bandwidth for - just that we used more than 95GB that month.
ReplyDeleteI go to Dallas tomorrow for 5 weeks, has anyone here been to the Rangers ballpark?
ReplyDeleteMcDonald is a AAAA player IMO, I want to see Lin given a shot.
ReplyDeleteThe Spinners season got underway on Friday.
ReplyDeleteThey showed The Steal on the video board between innings, prompting a standing ovation for Roberts. Seeing his reaction to the ovation gave me chills, and I didn't even see whatever the tribute was. <3 Dave Roberts.
ReplyDeletePerhaps this is why I got so mad at the kids behind me at a game last year who didn't know who Bill Mueller was. Without Mueller's hit, no one would remember Roberts' steal.
crap
ReplyDeleteouch.
ReplyDeleteRuh-roh.. I was just about to say what a great job Miller was doing tonight.
ReplyDeleteStill a good job, I just wish we had taken better advantage of the first inning.
hello all. hows things? Miller look ok?
ReplyDeleteyes, but that dong was not so nice.
And his first HR of the season? Yeesh.
ReplyDeleteGets the bad news
ReplyDeletebard and hottovy up
ReplyDeleteRe Roberts: None of that would have happened without Millar's walk.
ReplyDeleteAnd Mirror insists that Mueller's hit is the key to the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteYup, it all works together.
ReplyDeleteBut The Steal was the magical moment when we felt the momentum change - when we suddenly had renewed hope.
That's how I see it, anyway.
LBJ gets it started. Hang in there, the boys are coming!
ReplyDeleteBut The Steal was the magical moment when we felt the momentum change - when we suddenly had renewed hope.
ReplyDeleteABSOLUTELY.
He was so intent...everyone knew it was coming...he was close to getting picked off...magical.
Miller: 5.2-7-3-3-6, 89 p. Better than a Lackey start. He just didn't notify the offense about the need for double-digit wins.
ReplyDeletetime for bert to drop the hammer.
ReplyDeleteYouk makes the safe call from the dugout on Pedey's FC :)
ReplyDeletebending foul! that's new to the list
ReplyDeleteHammer dropped!
ReplyDelete"And the throw, there is none!"
ReplyDelete"the throw -- there is none!"
ReplyDeleteAnd there is the EVIL hammer!!!
ReplyDeletemaybe a 1/2 hammer...
ReplyDeleteLaura says: "And the throw, there is none!"
ReplyDeleteAllan says: "the throw -- there is none!"
Man, you two are like an old married couple ;)
It shows, does it? :)
ReplyDeleteFFire.

ReplyDeleteFenway Park stands as one

ReplyDeleteSpeaking of JD, did you see Tito's quote in a PeteAbe post the other day?
ReplyDelete"Being honest, J.D. hasn't caught fire," Francona said.

Ouch. This outing is brutal for this guy.
ReplyDeleteIf we were Yankees fans we'd be enraged right now and begging for retaliation.
ReplyDeleteJ.D. hasn't caught fire
ReplyDeleteClearly not threading.
And all with two outs!
ReplyDeleteMaxwell, that resulted in a chuckle from my husband.
ReplyDeleteI don't have 'stands as one' on my bingo card.
ReplyDeleteWe are... unstoppable.
ReplyDeletetoo many innings in every game - fucking unstoppable!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteit was on an earlier version
ReplyDeleteRudolph!!
ReplyDeleteWay to go.
"Maxwell, that resulted in a chuckle from my husband."
ReplyDeleteSadly, I entered the game thread just to post that after it occurred to me.
it was on an earlier version
ReplyDeleteI remember. I thought it made the final cut.
Whose boy is that?!
ReplyDeleteLook out for the chickens.
ReplyDeleteThat would be your boy, Laura.
ReplyDeleteI just asked Allan if he knows offhand what's the most batters to ever come to the plate in one inning. The answer: 23.
ReplyDeleteunnnnnstoppable
ReplyDeleteAnd now its a shitshow
ReplyDeleteI guess our offense is adequate enough.
ReplyDeleteHe is so evil
ReplyDeleteis it me or do we seem to have an inning like this every fucking day?
ReplyDeleteYeah, but how many of those batters were put on base by walks and HBPs? Or, what is the most number of walks and HBPs in an inning?
ReplyDeleteEB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I believe this is called a laugher.
ReplyDeleteJonathan was just saying the other day that he hasn't seen an exciting win in a while. I guess he'll have to keep waiting.
ReplyDeleteMake Tito apologize!
ReplyDeleteHow many apology games so far this year?
ReplyDeleteROUT.
ReplyDeleteLike Jonny, I was also wondering about close, exciting games. A good 3-1 or 2-0 win. I'll look through the schedule to see when we last had one of those.
ReplyDeleteNot right now, but I will.
4th padres pitcher of the inning coming in as the 14th sox batter of the inning steps in.
ReplyDeletetiz - booooooooooooooooooo!
ReplyDeleteand we were worried when they tied it at 3-3?
ReplyDelete:>)
10 runs
ReplyDelete5 hits
4 walks
2 HBP
Well, I'm headed to bed to listen without the computer. Good night guys.
ReplyDeleteJonny (nice of you to know that's what he is called) says May 29th at Detroit. Papi hits a home run in the 9th to go ahead 4-3.
psft, flo's a hack!
ReplyDeleteWell there's another successful sliding-Drew catch.
ReplyDeletedrew w/leather!
ReplyDeleteMFY - 400 000 010 - 5 9 0
ReplyDeleteCIN - 100 000 002 - 3 6 1

Soap opera talk, that's unusual even for Don & Jerry
ReplyDeleteOh noooo, LOB, squander, Red Sox special
ReplyDeleteetc
Sure is a lot of fun to be a Sox fan these days. Hehe!
ReplyDeleteI'm in bed, but with the laptop. So I'll watch the ninth.
ReplyDeleteDon cracking up.
ReplyDeleteI'm outta here, too. Don't forget: don't drink the water. It is FILTHY!
It's dirty.
ReplyDeleteWin #44.
ReplyDeleteThis is almost laughable to watch the way this offense is exploding and then think about the 2 - 10 start to the season.
ReplyDeleteEasiest job in baseball this month - being a pitcher on the Boston Red Sox. 8 runs or more, (often quite a bit more) in 8 of the last 15 games. And the other 7.....2 6-run games, 1 5-run, 1 4-run, and 1 3-run game. Only 2 games with 2 runs or less. Yee-fucking-ha!
ReplyDelete
