Globe photographer Barry Chin has clear evidence - four photos, including the one posted here - that umpire Marty Foster blew the call on Dustin Pedroia's tag of Juan Pierre in the fifth inning of Wednesday's loss.
It seems like Foster must be looking directly at Pedroia's tag. Television replays were not 100% conclusive, but they did show Pierre stumbling forward as if pushed by the glove. Pierre also appeared surprised when Foster allowed him to remain at second base.
It was a turning point in the game, as the next two Chicago hitters each knocked in a run and the White Sox tied the game at 3-3. If the correct call had been made, Boston might have been able to keep the White Sox off the board and keep its 3-1 lead.
Two words - instant replay.
