Yankees - 000 210 010 - 4 10 0 Red Sox - 002 500 03x - 10 11 1Jacoby Ellsbury drove in six runs, Carl Crawford went 4-for-4 and scored three times, and the Red Sox scored more runs against CC Sabathia (6-9-7-1-6, 94) in the fourth inning than the hefty lefty allowed in the entire month of July (39 innings).
John Lackey (6-6-3-2-5, 115) wriggled out of serious jams in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fifth, after being handed a 7-2 lead, Lackey allowed three base runners (and a run) on only three pitches: Francisco Cervelli singled, Brett Gardner was plunked, and Derek Jeter singled. The bullpen got busy, but Lackey made quick work of the Yankees' 3-4-5 hitters: Curtis Granderson struck out swinging (on four pitches), Mark Teixeira struck out swinging (on four pitches), and Robinson Cano grounded an 0-2 pitch to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who flipped to Lackey for the out.
I'll take Lackey's line against the Yankees every time out, but it wasn't pretty. His only 1-2-3 inning was the first. In the third and fourth, he threw a total of 59 pitches. The dread of a meltdown is so strong that when Lackey strands a runner or two, the pervasive feeling is relief that he made it through another inning instead of realizing that he pitched all right except for a hiccup (or two).
Ellsbury became the first Red Sox leadoff hitter to knock in at least six runs in a game since Ellis Burks had seven RBI against the Orioles on June 10, 1987. Ellsbury is the seventh Boston leadoff guy to do it since 1919.
Ellsbury now has 72 RBI, third-best on the team, and one more than #5-hitting David Ortiz. Gonzalez has 91 RBI (best in MLB) and Kevin Youkilis has 76.
Crawford began the third with a double. Jarrod Saltalamacchia walked and Marco Scutaro bunted the runners up. Craw scored on Ellsbury's sac fly and Salty scored on Dustin Pedroia's double off the Wall. Gardner made a nice throw to Cano, and Pedroia was nearly out at second, but FY slid to the infield side of the bag and the tag was late. However, the head-first slide took him past the bag a little bit and as he tried to turn back towards it, his left hand came off the bag. Cano tried to put another tag on Pedroia's right hand, but Pedroia pulled it back behind him while also getting his left hand back on the base.
In the fourth, Sabathia pitched about as well as any other 300-pound guy the Yankees could have found outside the park. Youkilis doubled. Ortiz struck out. Mike Avilies dropped a single into right on an 0-2 pitch. Crawford lined a run-scoring single into left field. Salty fouled out to first, but Scutaro singled up the middle for another run. Then Ellsbury crushed a three-run bomb to right.
Sabathia has a 2.11 ERA this year against all non-Boston teams. His ERA against the Red Sox is 7.20.
Facing Hector Noesi in the eighth, Boston added three more runs. Josh Reddick walked on 10 pitches, Crawford singled to right, Salty walked to load the bases. Scutaro popped to second, but Ellsbury drove in two runs with a single to right-center. Pedroia's sacrifice fly scored the 10th run.
Crawford now has four four-hit games this season. Four other players have also accomplished that: Adrian Gonzalez, Jeter, Granderson, and Jose Reyes. ... And he has hits in his last six plate appearances.
The two teams are once again tied (69-43) for first place in the East.
CC Sabathia / John Lackey
In Sabathia's last eight starts, he has a 1.01 ERA; in three of those starts, he has struck out 11, 13, and 14 batters. Prior to his last start, River Ave Blues noted that CC was on the best seven-start run of his career. Today, they wonder about his 2011 workload, which is high, even by his standards.
Lackey is ... well, he's Lackey.
Re David Ortiz's interruption of Terry Francona's post-game interview on Wednesday to complain about an official scoring decision, the Herald's John Tomase notes that the two men "were later seen laughing about it in the manager's office". Peter Abraham adds that Ortiz was "egged on by mirthful" Dustin Pedroia. And as far as the cursing, PeteAbe calls Tiz "the William Safire of obscenity".
Kevin Youkilis - the controversal R who was BI - says Ortiz should get two RBI, and thinks MLB will reinstate the original decision.
David has every right to be upset. It doesn't matter what the third base coach does. ... If the runner never breaks stride, that's what matters. ... I was running as hard as I could. ...[T]o have the pitching coach from the other team call ... makes zero sense. I know I was running as hard as I could and never stopped. You can't assume an error.Mike "Overheated" Vaccaro, Post:
It could mean nothing, OK? We've seen enough baseball games, you and I, heard ourselves proclaim far too often that this is the game you'll remember come October ... this is the moment that'll turn the whole season on its head. More often than not, we deal in hype and hyperbole when we do that.
Maybe that'll be the case with this. ...
Maybe it won't mean anything in the big picture.
But it sure felt like it meant something. ...
It sure felt like the Red Sox walked onto the field last night, just after seven o'clock, looking just a little bit different than the one that walked off just past 10:30. Swaggering just a little more subtly. Looking just a tad less bulletproof.
Looking, in fact, like a second-place team for the first time in a month.

From an Extra Bases post linking to the various Sox articles in today's Globe:
"Nick Cafardo writes that the Red Sox offense needs to step it up."
Ahhh, so that's what they need to do!!! ... Why didn't you write this for Friday morning, Nick? They could have been stepping up like crazy last night, if only they had known.
Craig Counsell singled in the ninth inning last night to snap a streak of 45 consecutive hitless at-bats. According to ELIAS, the streak matched Bill Bergen (1909) and Dave Campbell (1973) for the longest single-season skid in the modern era (non-pitcher, I believe).
Darnell most feel good about himself..
2nd batter and I'm already annoyed by McCarver.
i meant to post i am on mute all day and will have to leave it to others to document the atrocities
The "New" Lackey: OTT!
fox graphic highlights ellsbury's avg as 4th in AL; they include runs scored on screen but fail to note that that total is #2 in AL
CAT-LIKE REFLEXES!
WOW - Bert with the little shovel pass!!!!!
Hi. Here for just a bit.
Nice defense!
SoSH is listening:
"Teixeira is an MVP candidate with his .251 average? Thanks, Tim."
"McCarver: "Perfectly led by Gonzalez..." as the image on the screen shows Lackey reaching back as far as he can to catch the ball while stepping on the bag."
SoSH:
If dementia didn't seal the deal, HD should really spell the end of McCarver's career.
Apparently, the Red Sox are not a baseball team. CC Sabathia is "16-2 against baseball."
GDGD has ball 1 to CI clearly in the zone.
So glad that I pay NO attention to what these morons are saying.
Allan, stop aggravating yourself!
KI!
"Cervelli is a great base runner according to McCarver. He cites 4 stolen bases and no CS as his evidence. Career stolen bases? 5 Career caught stealing? 4"
I am only posting from the SoSH thread. I am not listening. People quoting him doesn't annoy me.
Lackey holding his own thru 3.
CC on a pitch count pace to go about 15 innings today.
CRAW DOUBLE
SSalty!
No squanders, pls
Crawford has had the last 3 Boston hits.
CA-CHING!
CA-CHING II!
FUCK YEAH!
McCarver = idiot.
So clearly safe!
FY pulling the right hand away from Cano!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, you can't tag me, silly rabbit!
I was hoping Cano might go into the Aybar Dance!
please don't totally meltdown!
outs, you annoying blame-throwing asshole
I'll gladly take that.
But as I said last night, STRAND THE MF at third.
jesus cockknocking christ....
ARGGHH LACKEY
Does Lackey always give runs back? It sure seems like it. Up to 86 pitches thru 4 (15-12-23-36).
SoSH:
So if .200 is the Mendoza Line, can we agree that an ERA of 6.00 is the Lackey Line?
Did McCarver say something dickish about the wall? My TV is muted, but I felt a disturbance in the force.
CRAWFORD, bitches!!
God, mccarver is killing me. allan you still on mute?
All mute, all the time.
Maybe if a huge brawl breaks out, I'll check in, but other than that ....
MARCO!
And CC has allowed as many ER today (4) as he did in July.
BOOOOOOOOOOO
YAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
FAN HELP ON THAT ONE?
LBJ!!!! Yeah!!
CCC gave up more runs in that 2/3 of an inning than he did in 39 July innings.
Lackey: "I don't care how many runs you guys score, I'm still going to lose this game."
I listened to 4th inning in the car. Woohoo. Radio said that LBJ's dong was only the second given up this season to a left hander.
don't steal outs, tito.
Why is Mattingly batting?
He *does* look like Mattingly!
It's the "I'm 15 and am trying real hard to grow a mustache" look.
ugly and annoying, but a 6-6-3-2-5 line by lackey against the mfy is okay by me.
Everyone is saying Buck sounds like he is half-dead or on 'ludes.
Also, SoSH:
What is this shit about Posada's hands. Tim, he pisses on them.
What the fuck is Tapioca talking about?
Oh my god, now he's washing Posada's balls for being a DH? Just get a job at YES already.
beer can delay?
Ha, that was funny. Francona just chuckles.
McCarver now telling stories about selling peanuts at a park in Memphis...
L quotes Castig: "even though the red sox have scored 7 runs, you always feel better when he's out of the game"
ouch!
beer can delay, pic from old friend amalie.
Fox probably paid that guy to spill the beer right over their banner.
A pleasure (so far) despite Fox's coverage. Buck really sounds like he's reading the newspaper!
I never feel safe against the spawn of satan.
McCarver offering to pay for the beer if that guy has to pony up.
Now that our daughter has her own apartment, and no longer in college living, she is looking to adopt a puppy. We've had fun looking at the possibilities. I think she has a home visit next week for the border collie rescue. They have to determine if she qualifies!
during the playoffs one year, fox came back from commercial and there was some banner (on a building beyond the outfield of the park?) and buck and mcmoron were wondering what it was, trying to figure out the cryptic message was. camera stayed on it for a long time. can't recall how it eneded, probably they just gave up and the game went on.
turns out it was all deliberate, and was an actual ad and the two morons made believe like they were just chatting and not reading a script for a commercial.
CERVELLIBALLA
Kat, I hope your daughter investigates thoroughly. Border Collies are amazing dogs but super high maintenance. If she's single and lives in an apt it mught not be a great match.
I've had a border collie for 2 1/2 years and he surprises me nearly every day. But you need to be strong. Our weakness led to our poor little mite being rushed to an emergency vet last Sunday because they never know when to stop.
Yes, we have talked to her about that. She actually has two roommates who are committed to helping out. And, they have good outside room to run. But, the three girls are only 22, so I'm not sure they understand what kind of commitment this is. And, how active Border Collies can be. She is also looking at lab mixes and is going to the local shelter next week.
CC!!! What a day!!
She had a border collie mutt most of her growing up years, but she wasn't the one caring for it!
yeah, steal that shit
Come on. Make it easy on ourselves
I would say "no dog" is probably the wisest move. I would imagine she's going to be too busy - and that outside committment often has a way of drying up after a few weeks.
No, Marco, don't make it easy for *them*.
Allan, we've also had that conversation. She'll have to make the decision. Jay was trying to give her an idea of the magnitude. He told her that she would be 37 when the dog died.
that boy is a beast!
Jacoby cures asthma! I am breathing more easily now!
Yes, but whose beast is he?
It would be horrible for things to go badly and for the dog to have to go BACK to the shelter.
Going back to the shelter is not an option for our family. I think she feels the same, but again, she's only 21.
Yankee killer, of a sort.
Crazy, lucky ricochet.
ellsbury is the first sox leadoff hitter with 6 RBI in a game in 24 years.
He has more RBI than #5-hitting Ortiz - with the bottom/dregs of the order in front of him!
Dirty! Yipee.
WP: Lackey
LP: Sabathia
"Going back to the shelter is not an option for our family"
Good to hear. Good luck - I hope she changes her mind. I wanted a puppy at her age... But I waited.
Don't drink the water!!!
(And my beast, btw!)
Great game. Let's get in sole possession of 1st tomorrow.
J Damon did have six RBI as a leadoff hitter in the 2004 ALCS.
This was a pretty fun one to follow on an iphone all day, especially the end.
I'm just reading the Vaccaro quote now. What a moron. Even when they act like they've "learned," they still never learn, these people. I mean why not just write after every single win "I know I could be wrong, I'm not stupid or anything, but this COULD be the win we all look back on, etc." Do it every game, then if the team wins it all, hey, you were exactly right! Wrong 99 times, granted, but exactly fucking right that one time. Here's your award for journalism excellence.
