G114: Red Sox 8, Twins 6

Red Sox - 010 004 012 - 8 17 2
Twins - 030 110 010 - 6 10 1
David Ortiz's fourth hit of the game drove in pinch-runner Darnell McDonald with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, as Boston increased its road record to an MLB-best 34-21. (The Microwave had pinch-run and scored the winner against the Yankees on Sunday night, too.)

Tim Wakefield (7-8-5-0-4, 102) left the game with the Red Sox ahead 6-5, but did not get credit for what would have been his 200th career win. Alfredo Aceves allowed a run in the home half of the eighth, earning himself a blown save, but he also ended up as the winning pitcher because the Red Sox rallied in the ninth and Jonathan Papelbon held that lead. It's a crazy system.

Ortiz singled and scored in the second, flew out to left in the fourth, hit a monstrous two-run homer in the sixth, doubled and scored in the eighth, and singled in the ninth. It was the 14th four-hit game of his career, but only his second since the start of 2008; the other four-hit game since then also came this year: July 26.

Boston trailed 5-1 when Carl Crawford tripled to start the top of the sixth against Scott Baker (6-9-5-0-5, 93) and scored on Adrian Gonzalez's sac fly. Then Dustin Pedroia singled, Ortiz homered (#22), and Jarrod Saltalamacchia followed with a dong of his own (#11), tying the game at 5-5.

Jacoby Ellsbury singled off Glen Perkins to start the ninth. Crawford struck out and while Gonzalez was batting, Ellsbury was caught stealing 1-3-6 for the second out. Gonzalez singled and Joe Nathan replaced Perkins. Pedroia beat out an infield single to third, Ortiz lined a single to center (7-6), and Salty doubled to left (8-6).

Marco Scutaro, after going 4-for-4 last night, singled in his first three times at bat tonight.

Jonathan Papelbon set down the Twins in order in the ninth (K, K, 4-3) -- his 25th save in 26 chances -- and the Red Sox (71-43) increased their lead in the East to 1.5 games.
Example
Tim Wakefield / Scott Baker

Wakefield takes his third shot at his 200th career victory (and Red Sox Win #186).

Jed Lowrie is back on the roster and is playing third base tonight. Randy Williams was sent back to Pawtucket. ... Fourteen of Boston's next 17 games are on the road (Minnesota, Seattle, Kansas City, Texas).

The Twins are 1-7 over their last eight games; in the losses, they have scored 3, 3, 1, 1, 3, 1, and 0 runs.

The Yankees (1 GB) are off tonight, and will host the Angels tomorrow. BRef has a neat post about Mariano Rivera: in 1,023 regular season games, he has allowed more than one extra base hit only 24 times (and seven of those were in 1995, when he was a starter). Various readers expand upon that and post the related numbers of other relievers.

Instead of being tortured by the Sut-led ESPN team - it's Sox radio for us, assuming L does not want mute (with the better but not by all that much O'B).

Wake - OTT

jesus - that was quick,.

tim said...

Just tuned in, what the fuck is going on???

Maxwell Horse said...

That's okay. Crawford just isn't used to the Green Monster yet.

tim said...

Missed catch error - bullshit!

tim said...

and the crawford drop was ruled a double.

ok. glad i'm not scoring this one!

tim said...

wow.

the past 10 minutes have been GREAT!

Kathryn said...

Disgusting inning.

Amy said...

Oy vey.

Amy said...

Tim, you should be scoring. Sox seem to win when you do!

Amy said...

Uh oh. Anyone up yet in the pen?

Kathryn said...

How can craw's not be an error? And salty's is. Idiotic.

tim said...

Amy, I would, but then my streak of sox walkoffs would come to an end!

allan said...

How can craw's not be an error? And salty's is. Idiotic.

And NESN continues to use fielding percentage as the one and only way to evaluate players in the field.

Amy said...

Well, no walk off possible tonight.

laura k said...

Cheery thread, I see. Perhaps I should keep my optimism to myself. It's too early to be so gloomy!

Baker on the all-trades team. Just thought I'd mention it.

allan said...

ESPN crawl mentions that "Ugla" is 0 for 1.

laura k said...

OK, well that sucked. But still. It's early.

Kathryn said...

I guess Scutaro feels a little threatened by Lowrie.

What's up with him?

laura k said...

Dave O'Brien will NOT stop talking about Joe Mauer, all insinuation and innuendo. Obie at his worst.

Kathryn said...

Oh good golly. Poor Wake.

laura k said...

Crawiple! (?)

RUNS PLS

allan said...

OB and castig praising timmons for his calls behind the plate last night, says no one complained.

they did not read the thread. timmons was totally shitty, but shitty for both sides. no pattern either, just shitty all over the place.

allan said...

FUCKIN A - MOON SHOT!!!!

Kathryn said...

PAPI!! PAPI!! PAPI!! Great big dong.

laura k said...

Castig: Sox could really use a long one here to make up some ground.

Tiz: BOOM!

Quadrangular!

Kathryn said...

Laura, thank you for your optimism.

Maxwell Horse said...

Now I really wish I had posted my psychic prediction before this inning started. I would've blown people away.

laura k said...

SalTALA!!!!

allan said...

SAL-TALA-DONG!!!!!!!!!

TIED, fuckers!

laura k said...

May I just say that we are...

tim said...

TIED!!!!!!

laura k said...

UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

?

tim said...

lol, i thought it worked!

laura k said...

MH, you should have! Or else maybe never post your predictions, then just tell us afterwards when it goes well.

Maxwell Horse said...

The homeplate ump is friggin' drunk.

Kathryn said...

After our Seinfeld conversation the other night, I can't see Sal-Tala without thinking Sal-Stella.

Maxwell Horse said...

Laura, I swear to God I was going to post that the Sox would tie it up. What a missed opportunity. Now my whole night is ruined!

laura k said...

MH, now my whole life is ruined!

laura k said...

LOL @ Sal-Stella

laura k said...

In a thread one time in 2007, I said, I have to go get something, but I'll wait til Tek ties it up here. He hadn't seen a pitch yet.

Then Tek hit one out, and tied the game.

I was like a hero for the rest of the week.

It's been all downhill since.

Kathryn said...

2007? That's a long time to be going downhill. Are you sure there is nothing else since then?

tim said...

I posted my tied comment when the thread still had like 18 comments so I had no idea that you posted that "May I just say that we are....." comment, L!

laura k said...

Well, the Red Sox won the WS. What else.

Let's see... became a Canadian citizen, started grad school... adopted a new dog...

I guess it hasn't been all bad.

Maxwell Horse said...

That seals it. From now on I will post every single prediction that pops into my head. I don't care if I have a 0% accuracy rating.

Tomorrow, Pedroia will be a homerun and a triple short of the cycle. Heidi Watney will start a segment after there are 2 outs in the inning; the third out will happen so quickly that when the video clip is over she won't have time to say her little wrap-up. Also, Francona will miss the game to prepare for his upcoming sex change operation.

Book it.

tim said...

Well, that was 2007.

Calling a Tek dong NOWADAYS surely would trump all of the above.

tim said...

Maxwell - who will win the basketball game, the Generals or the Globetrotters?

tim said...

ha! eat it, 24!

laura k said...

Good call, MH. Terry won't even have to change his name.

laura k said...

Calling a Tek dong NOWADAYS surely would trump all of the above.

:>)

Allan's finding the game. There aren't many to choose from.

Maxwell Horse said...

Tim, neither one. Surprise asteroid hit.

allan said...

tek hit 17 in '07. l thinks it was a friday. might have been april 20 vs nyy. bref has a HR log for everyone - someone could see dates of dongs and check threads...

Maxwell Horse said...

Pedroia just did some cool bullet-time Matrix stuff to avoid that pitch.

tim said...

fuck NO.

laura k said...

squander

allan said...

gidp? fydp.

Kathryn said...

Man, I bet there is some serious cussing going on after that double play.

tim said...

good idea allan, you do that and i'll keep threading.

Kathryn said...

MH, that was very matrix-y, especially in slow motion.

laura k said...

On the other hand, who cares what game it was. All that matters is it was the height of my psychic powers.

allan said...

1B ump wildly out of position on throws to first. AG tags the runner on the right side of the runner's body, but the umpire is over on the left side of the runner, down the line. he cannot possibly see any of the tags.

laura k said...

CS!

Kathryn said...

CS!! Again.

Maxwell Horse said...

Salty's got a really impressive gun.

His throwing arm is okay too. Hey-oh!

tim said...

FLOBLE!!!!!

laura k said...

A triple away...!

laura k said...

Salty's got a really impressive gun.

TWSS

Kathryn said...

PH for Reddick?

tim said...

HAHAHAHA

WE LEAD!!!!!

Kathryn said...

Now that's an error.

laura k said...

We have the lead!

[It's shit on Joe Mauer night in Dave O'Brien land.]

allan said...

OB says Tiz would have been out by 10 feet. more like 10 inches, maybe...

plus OB is totally celebrating "Shit On Joe Mauer Night" ... it's really blatant.

tim said...

after crawford went 9-9, scut now 7 for his last 7!

tim said...

...and that's the end of that.

BZ said...

Not a very clean game, but Bard and Pap can hold and save it for Wakie's 200th!

allan said...

not a clean game?
that's why it's dirty water!

tim said...

aceves - wtf?

tim said...

craw was 8-8, not 9-9.

allan said...

OB's PBP makes me think he's watching the game thru sterling-coloured glasses.

BZ said...

Hmmm... Aceves for the hold.
Do it!

meunier said...

Im in Santiago DR now, leaving tomorrow with many things done for the wedding.

tim said...

fuck, maybe it was 7. too lazy to look up detailed game logs.

BZ said...

Or Aceves for a blown hold?

tim said...

ah, so you can click on the PA on b-ref and see the results for that particular game.

7 for 7 is correct. same as scutaro.

i've wasted far too many posts on this. instead i should be focusing on why the fuck aceves is in. i guess bard is unavailable. better than morales.

tim said...

see who was AB in the mets game, A?

DUDA!!!

tim said...

fucking christ aceves.

meunier said...

Spanish announcers said that Bard is feeling flulike symptoms

BZ said...

Poor Wakie...
Where was Bard??? He only pitched one inning last night.

laura k said...

Fuckers, tied again.

allan said...

"blown hold" is funny.

top of the mf-ing order ...

allan said...

Buffalo DUDA?

tim said...

its sad that these goofy newfangled stats like "holds" are socially accepted and used by MLB, while old classics like UZR and xFIP are shunned.

BZ said...

Gotta score Els.

tim said...

well, they are the mets farm team, so I assume he's made the bigs, being the bison legend that he was.

he was a blue chip prospect. a blue buffalo chip.

meunier said...

Time to get moving LBJ

laura k said...

its sad that these goofy newfangled stats like "holds" are socially accepted and used by MLB, while old classics like UZR and xFIP are shunned.

+1

tim said...

fuck that shit. and the salty one was considered safe.

laura k said...

Fuck! CS in the wrong direction.

tim said...

ehh, ump has a point.

just whack one here a-gon.

allan said...

so a solo shot, then.

Kathryn said...

Crap. C'mon EB. Need a dong here.

BZ said...

A clean-up laser is in order.

laura k said...

Time for Tiz's triple. I'm calling it, MH, whadda think?

Patrick said...

Triple for the cycle.

tim said...

TSN.ca video: "If his first 3 MLB games are any indication, Brett Lawrie is on his way to stardom."

Well, they AREN'T, so I'm NOT gonna watch this!

tim said...

I support your prediction, L.

laura k said...

SAL-TALA !!!!

8-6!!!

tim said...

FAIR BALL! SALTALADOUBLE!

Patrick said...

Ortiz modestly opted to stay at first, though the cycle was right there for him to take.

Just two little bases for him to run.

Kathryn said...

Followed up by Salty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Say it L...

laura k said...

STELLAAAAAA!!!!!!

tim said...

I did check his stats, out of curiosity. 5/11 with a dong, just wanted to make sure he wasn't 0/11 and the story was going to be about his gritty, scrappy, dirty uniform.

Patrick said...

Salti should play more. I don't know why we see Tek play as much as we do.

laura k said...

We are....

laura k said...

....UNSTOPPABLE!!!

(Kat, was that it? :) )

Patrick said...

un fucking stoppable.

laura k said...

What Patrick says. More Tala, less Cactus, pls.

Kathryn said...

Yep, that was it.

Although the Stella hit the mark, too.

laura k said...

I figured I'd just throw everything at it and see what stuck.

Wow, breathing room for Bot!

tim said...

Maybe danny valencia can join baker on the kitchen team?

tim said...

2.

tim said...

Or the city team.

tim said...

1.

tim said...

Cafardo's new file photo looks like Rush Limbaugh.

As if we needed another reason to hate him.

Kathryn said...

Now that is some chin music.

tim said...

DIRTY UNSTOPPABLE WATER!!!!!!

laura k said...

Don't drink the water! It is COMEBACK DIRTY!

Kathryn said...

Dirty stinkin' water. Gotta love this team.

allan said...

new rule, apparently:
every night, a sox player must get 4 hits.

laura k said...

I love this team! I unstoppably love them.
