Pitchers in these times are fragile creatures, most of whom think that nine innings in a day is about enough and that two appearances in the same week are as much as can be expected from the hardiest. ... Either our ancestors were better men than we or there is a good deal of reserve energy in the average pitcher of our time which rarely gets an opportunity to display itself under conditions that tend to cultivate the psychology of the prima donna.
