He understands that a thank-you is just that, nothing else, and doesn't rake through the ashes of what might have been or the darker moments of what was.
Very classy. I might've liked something a little more informal, just because Theo was raised in the area and, as someone who was also raised in the MA area and a Sox fan from childhood, it would've been hard not to brush on that for a bit if it were me. That being said, extremely minor quibble, and a well-thought/spoken/written thank you.
This actually made me a bit teary. I think what bothers me the most and has made me the most irritable this post-season is saying goodbye to Francona and Theo. I am a sentimental person, and this is like losing two old friends. :(
I'm with Amy. I think this is a bit harder than any of the players we've seen go their way. With the possible exception of Pedro. These 2 guys are pretty much responsible for the end of the drought in Boston. That being said, I certainly don't believe we can't win it all again without them. In Theo's words - Go Sox.....
Since I'm a fan come lately, Theo and Tito are the only GM and manager I've known. I'm very sorry to see them both go.
This off-season is really going to take Cherington's measure. Compensation for Theo, a manager search, Papelbon, Papi, Wake, Tek, and other free-agent decisions to make...a rotation and bullpen to rebuild, and everything conducted with a media shit-blizzard well underway. The guy's got a huge job.
Great ad. A super classy gesture to go out with. Thanks back to you, Theo!
Wow, now I am REALLY teary after reading Theo's piece in the Globe. Thanks, Tom, for the link. What a classy guy, not that that surprises me.
I am so envious of those Cubs fans and their team. I do hope we get to play them in a WS next year or soon, but if we don't make it, I will root for them over any other team. GO, THEO! Best of luck in the Windy City!

ReplyDeletePretty classy, I'd say.
And ends it: "Go Sox"

"Go Sox"--I'm sure he would sincerely like nothing better than to see the Red Sox in Wrigley Field a year from now....
ReplyDeleteVery well played indeed.
ReplyDeleteI'll be wishing the Cubs great success!!!!

This is beautiful. Thank you, Theo! We love you, too.
ReplyDeleteI've also said (many times, by now) that losing Tito and Theo has been the most difficult part of the fallout of 2011.
But life and baseball goes on, the Sox go on, and we'll go on - and we'll win again.
I'm sure he would sincerely like nothing better than to see the Red Sox in Wrigley Field a year from now....
Some of us want to see that more than others. I stand ready to crank up the 1918 publicity machine! ;)
Theo Epstein = class act

Theo had a little more to say after publishing that full-page ad.
