Red Sox assistant general manager Mike Hazen said yesterday the competition is
definitely far from over. ... At some point, yeah, you want to start defining roles on the club. We're still early for that.A YES graphic during Tuesday's game against the Yankees slotted Alfredo Aceves into that final spot. And Vicente Padilla's agent said last month that he expects his client will be starting when April rolls around.
But Doubront, 24, does seem to be the leading contender, though, especially after his four shutout innings against the Yankees earlier this week. Plus, the lefty is out of options, and would surely be claimed if the Red Sox tried to push him through waivers. Doubront will be on the Opening Day roster in some capacity.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, re Doubront:
He's been working hard on trying to go after hitters and throwing in the strike zone early and kind of expanding later, so I think [Tuesday] was a confidence-booster for him.The Hardball Times asks Five Questions about the Red Sox, Yankees, and Rays.

ReplyDeleteAnd Aceves was ahead of Bard on that graphic!

ReplyDeleteActually, this is the kind of thing that could revolutionize RedSox clubhouse culture, which has too long been chicken-oriented--since the days of Chicken Man at the very least.
It took a while for "eight pounds" to completely register with me. My dog Boca weighs eight pounds! I'm trying to imagine her as a giant burger right now (I can see her out of the corner of my eye)--think Mack Swain and Charlie Chaplin in 'Gold Rush.'
ReplyDeleteI think we'd notice the weight gain well before All-Star break....

If Doubront gets in the rotation for more than 2 starts, he definitely merits a JOS nickname.
ReplyDeleteAnd it better not have anything to do with cats.
Doobie.
ReplyDeleteWhatever punny name you guys come up with, he'll still bear Doubront of it.
ReplyDeleteDoes he have a brother?
ReplyDeleteEight pounds of food in one sitting? I'm not sure that I can eat eight pounds in a week!
ReplyDeleteEven stuffing myself stupid at holiday meal time, I'm not sure that I consume more than a pound of food.
Which I guess begs the question: what does the average 2,000 calorie-a-day diet roughly weigh?
