Highlanders - 120 111 000 - 6 11 0 Red Sox - 010 010 000 - 2 10 1A wonderful afternoon of remembrance and celebration was marred a desultory effort by the Red Sox, who dropped their fourth consecutive game. They have been outscored 31-8 in those four games, and are now 4-9.
Buchholz (6-9-6-2-2, 103) gave up five solo home runs, including two to Eric Chavez.

Boston had at least one runner on base in eight of the nine innings, but could do very little against Nova (6-7-2-0-5, 93), who has not been charged with a loss in his last 19 starts, dating back to last June. David Ortiz homered to lead off the second and doubles by Cody Ross and Mike Aviles brought in another run in the fifth.Ivan Nova / Clay Buchholz
On Saturday, April 20, 1912, the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Highlanders 7-6, in 11 innings, in the first major league game played at Fenway Park.
This afternoon - exactly 100 years later - the two rivals will meet again. Both teams will wear 1912 replica uniforms.
The Red Sox said they are starting at 3 PM because that was when the 1912 game began, but a re-typing of the Globe game story indicates that the 1912 game started at 1:10 PM.
ReplyDeleteBartolo Colon throws 38 straight strikes!
ReplyDeleteIt also says it ended at 4:20, but the box shows the time of game as 3 hrs. 20 min.
ReplyDeleteI'd checked recently to try and figure this out and saw various starting times. But from what I recall, the paper the day of the game was listing a 3:something starting time. (Looking at actual image of papers.) So what's with this "re-typing"?
Okay I see the Providence paper's box showed a 3 hr, 10 min game, which makes sense in the 1:10-4:20 game.
ReplyDeleteSo what's with this "re-typing"?
ReplyDeleteThe Blogger typed it out, rather than posting a picture of the actual paper.

I'll stay with my 1918 hat (as seen in photo on back of 1918 book).
ReplyDeleteYou can have the hat too!
ReplyDeleteThose of you who have Allan's book have seen him modelling an authentic replica 1918 cap.
Added a picture of the Yankees' shirt and cap to the post.
ReplyDeleteWhen does the pregame start? Will it be on MLB TV?
ReplyDelete2 PM.
ReplyDeleteYes.
Carl Crawford homered in his first extended spring training game. In Game #2, he has walked, doubled, stole third base and scored run in two AB.
ReplyDeleteIs there a stream of the pregame anywhere?
ReplyDeleteIf you want to further complicate things, they didn't have daylight savings time back in 1912, so add an hour to the 1912 start time to put it in today's context.
ReplyDeletePedro, Nomar, Tito, Lowell, and Foulke, got me a little teary eyed today. That was pretty to cool watch. The game not so much...
ReplyDeleteThe ceremony was brilliant. The bit at the end - Tek and Wake bringing out Pesky and Doerr had me teary-eyed, too.
ReplyDeleteThen the game made us want to cry in a different way! Argh.
Here's my gallery from the day.
ReplyDeleteJere, I'm so glad that you were there, and your mom, too! Thanks for the link, I just posted it in comments on wmtc.
ReplyDeleteJere I saw all your pics on your site, nice. How was it though ? Was it as cool as it looked ? Or was it one of those monents you wont realize how cool it was for ten years?
ReplyDeletelaura--Thanks
ReplyDelete9c--Yeah it was pretty sweet to see all those guys out there at once. Before I talked about how everybody should get equal treatment, and they actually did it better than I hoped. Because everybody came out one after the other with no announcements, but the team, knowing some guys would get bigger reactions, allowed extra space between those guys and whoever was in front of/behind them. So it was equal but with a necessary nod to guys who were gonna get extra cheers anyway.
