The Red Sox made a valiant effort, though. In the sixth, singles from Dustin Pedroia, Adrian Gonzalez and Cody Ross loaded the bases with no outs. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit into a 4-6-3 double play, and one run scored. Will Middlebrooks stroked an RBI-single to right, ending Rick Porcello's night (5.2-8-4-2-6, 88). After Ryan Kalish walked, Pedro Ciriaco singled home a run off Phil Coke, making it 6-4, Tigers.
Carl Crawford homered to open the seventh, cutting the lead to one run. But three Detroit relievers retired the next nine Boston batters - only one ball was hit out of the infield - to secure the Tigers' win.
