G105: Red Sox 7, Orioles 3

Red Sox - 001 302 100 - 7 10 0
Orioles - 000 011 010 - 3 9 0
Stephen Drew went 3-for-4, with two home runs and three runs scored. He tied a career-high with five RBI.

Mike Carp also went 3-for-4. Shane Victorino homered and drove in two runs. Jarrod Saltalamacchia scored twice.

David Ortiz got very angry in the seventh inning. He was upset at a high 3-0 pitch that was called a strike. He eventually struck out in the at-bat and then - showing some surprising talent as a switch-hitter - destroyed the dugout phone with a bat. Then he wished home plate umpire Tim Timmons a happy birthday.

Boston stayed 0.5 GB Tampa Bay, who two-hit the Yankees this afternoon 1-0. New York is 8 GB!

  1. That was frighteningly close to Pedroia's head. YIKES! Who knew sweet Papi had such a temper??

  2. I didn't see anybody the game, but I listened to the last two innings on the radio. They were talking non-stop about the bad night the umpire was having behind the plate...how bad his grade will be; how he will know in the morning how many mistakes he had made. I've never heard such talk over do long a period of time. Was it that bad?

  3. It seemed pretty bad. To the point where it almost seemed like some of the "bad" calls were a case of the ump trying to show who's boss, etc.

I guess the Orioles broadcasters even seemed to think that the bad first strike call to Ortiz (preceding the phone incident) was done because Ortiz was "showing up" the ump by walking out of the box too early. Except of course the Orioles broadcasters were on the side of the ump, saying that it was a justified wrong call, because players have to kneel before authority and kiss their feet* and respectfully wait for the call to be made.

    *(my own spin on it)

I actually heard a caller on WEEI make a good point. He asked why is it not okay to "show up" the ump with non-deferential body language, but it's okay for some of these umps to get crazy with the karate-like strike-three calls. Isn't that showing up the player?

  4. Well, so much for typing on my phone.

That's supposed to be: I didn't see any of the game

  5. How come that's not a strike? You step out of the batter's box, it's a strike. Right? Did they change that rule?

Under Rule 6.02(b), it's either a strike or a ball, depending on whether the pitcher threw a strike or a ball. It isn't an automatic strike.

    (b) The batter shall not leave his position in the batter’s box after the pitcher comes to Set Position, or starts his windup.
PENALTY: If the pitcher pitches, the umpire shall call “Ball” or “Strike,” as the case may be.

  7. Love the way Pedroia immediately covered his head with a towel to avoid injury...such a smart kid -always thinking, ready for anything.

  8. Despite the atrocious umpiring job, Ortiz will get suspended for that outburst and he should.

    1 game....hopefully not tonight!

Suspended for venting frustration in his own team's dugout? I disagree. Players throw similar tantrums from time to time. They are not normally suspended.
