Diamondbacks - 000 000 000 - 0 8 1 Red Sox - 000 022 00x - 4 9 1Doubront (7-5-0-0-5, 95) was both brilliant and economical. He has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 15 straight starts, and 19 of his 21 starts this season. The 15-start streak is the longest by a Red Sox pitcher in a single season since Tim Wakefield had 17 in 1995. Over his 15 starts, Doubront has lowered his ERA from 6.40 to 3.56.
In the fifth, Stephen Drew (2-for-3) singled, went to third on Brock Holt's single, and scored on Jacoby Ellsbury's sacrifice fly. Shane Victorino's single moved Holt to third. Holt came across on Dustin Pedroia's double. After David Ortiz was walked intentionally to load the bases, the Red Sox were poised for a big inning. But both Mike Napoli and Mike Carp popped out against reliever Will Harris.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Drew opened the sixth with singles. Holt bunted the runners to second and third. Ellsbury and Victorino followed with RBI singles. Pedroia walked, loading the bases with only one out. But, as in the fifth, the home team could not pounce. Ortiz struck out swinging and Napoli flied to center.
Arizona stranded five men on base in the final three innings.
Tampa Bay beat the Giants 4-3, so Boston's lead in the East remains at one game. Both the Red Sox and Rays are 7-3 over their last 10 games. ... The Red Sox begin a three-city road trip - Houston, Kansas City, Toronto - tomorrow night.
