Linescores From Astros' Split-Squads

Two interesting linescores from Houston's split-squad games on Sunday:
Atlanta - 100 000 010 0 - 2 7 0
Astros - 000 000 200 0 - 2 0 0
Atlanta used nine pitchers in completing the no-hitter. How did Houston score twice? They began the inning with two walks and a HBP. Two groundouts brought home the runs.
Astros - 210 322 121 - 14 20 1
Tigers - 202 220 010 - 9 13 0
The Astros left the bases loaded in the third inning. So close ...

  1. I seem to remember the Red Sox once allowing no hits but losing 2-1... off to BB-Ref to check.

Ah, yes, 12 April 1992, Boston at Cleveland, final score 2-1 Spiders. Matt Young pitched eight no-hit innings but walked seven. His pitch count was 120 and only 63 were recorded as strikes.

In the first, Kenny Lofton opened with a walk, stole second and third, and scored on an error by Luis Rivera at short.

In the third, Young walked the first two, induced a force out at second, then allowed the second run on a fielder's choice that resulted in no out.

The next day, Clemens threw a complete game two-hitter with three walks allowed to beat Cleveland 3-0.

  2. Oddly enough, since 1914 (earliest box scores captured in BB-Red) there have been just five games where one team no-hit another but was on the losing end of the final score.

How about this one? The White Sox won 4-0 over the MFY in Chicago on 01 July 1990 without recording a hit. All four runs were scored in the bottom of the eighth after the first two White Sox batters recorded outs.

    E5, SB
    Walk
    Walk
E7 (fly ball), three runs score
E9 (fly ball), one run scores

Andy Hawkins was the losing pitcher for the MFY. Jim Leyritz was in left field and Jesse Barfield for the visitors.

  3. Follow up to my first comment: Clemens' 3-0 win came in the second game of a doubleheader. So over two games played on a single day, two Sox pitchers combined to give up just two hits and Boston won just one of those games.

    Yikes...

  4. I feel like I may have seen that inning of the Hawkins game, but I'm not sure if my memory is reliable.

It's very likely. We saw a lot of that team.
