Angels - 000 001 000 - 1 4 0 Red Sox - 020 010 03x - 6 12 0Wade Miley pitched eight commanding innings (8-4-1-1-2, 97), Mike Napoli drove in four runs with a home run and a double, and Xander Bogaerts went 4-for-4.
Bogaerts was on first base in the second inning when Napoli crushed a pitch roughly a dozen rows up in the bleachers in dead center. ESPN Stats and Info said it travelled 450 feet, the longest home run hit at Fenway this season. It was Napoli's fifth dong in his last six games.
Bogaerts collected four hits for the third time in his career: he went 4-for-5 on September 2, 2014, and 4-for-8 on April 10 of this year.
Miley retired the first 14 Angels before walking Chris Iannetta in the fifth. C.J. Cron followed with a single, but Miley retired Matt Joyce to end the inning. Mike Trout had an RBI-double in the sixth. Miley shrugged that off, retiring the side in order in the seventh and erasing a one-out hit in the eighth by inducing a double play.
The Red Sox (now only 2.5 GB in the East) begin a six-game road trip to Minnesota and Texas with a game against the Twins tomorrow at 2 PM.

ReplyDeleteThe Yankees are going down, and no part of their game is slowing their descent.
It's a free-fall now after Saturday's debacle against the Texas Rangers. The Bombers were bad on the mound, at the plate and in the field as they got smoked, 15-4 ... This makes five losses in a row and nine in the last 10 games.
Here is what the free-fall looks like: starter CC Sabathia being pulled in the third inning, during which the Yankees gave up a season-worst 10 runs; fielding miscues and wild pitches that gave Texas extra bases and extra runs; and a lineup that didn't score until the deficit was 13. The final indignity of the day was Garrett Jones moving from first base to the pitcher's mound to get the last two outs.

Bill Madden, NYDN:
Indeed, it is hard to believe the Bombers were in first place only three days ago. It seems like a month, so thoroughly inept they have been in all phases of the game ...
So this is a discussion that must be had because there is so much that seemingly needs to be fixed here and you have to wonder if it really can be.

Joel Sherman, NYP:
The Yankees remain in second place despite having dropped nine of 10. But the kindness of others will not save these Yankees. They can't keep pointing at the forgiving standings rather than themselves. Their current play has sunk into the unacceptable/intolerable sewer.

Wallace Matthews, ESPNNY:
[W]ith the seven runs they allowed in the third inning Friday night, it marked the first time they had allowed seven or more runs in one inning in back-to-back games since June 19-20, 2002, at Colorado. The last time they did such a thing at home? Try nearly 108 years ago: June 11-12, 1907 vs. Detroit, when they were known as the Highlanders and played at Hilltop Park in upper Manhattan.

Sweet, sweet music is the pain of the pinstripers.
ReplyDeleteYankees lose again, this time 5-2 to the Rangers. That's 6 losses in a row and 10 out of 11. They have gone from 4 GA to 1.5 GB during those 11 games. Maybe Madden's Daily News article not so long ago awarding them the AL East crown was a little premature.
ReplyDeleteWe won two in a row? Isn't there some kind of law against that?
