Bryce Harper put together a performance unlike any other in Major League history in the Nationals' 15-1 win over Atlanta on Thursday, reaching base four times and scoring four runs, all without an official at-bat. His final batting line -- 0-4-0-1 / 4 walks -- was truly unique. It's the first time in modern history that a hitter has drawn at least four walks and scored four runs and driven in a run without a hit or an at-bat.
ReplyDeleteCurt Schilling: ESPN Removes Analyst From Coverage for Remainder of MLB Season
ReplyDeleteSchilling was removed from Little League World Series coverage and the "Sunday Night Baseball" show after he posted a meme on Twitter comparing Muslims to Nazis.
WEEI: "Multiple sources have told WEEI's Kirk Minihane that NESN requested Don Orsillo to tweet that the decision to part ways with the network was mutual. The Red Sox broadcaster declined to position an announcement in such a way."
ReplyDeleteRe: Schilling. A lot of people seem to be of the opinion that this is an overreaction from ESPN. If it were just this one incident, then maybe there'd be an argument. But I think it's possible it's been a cumulative buildup.
ReplyDeleteThere's a sometimes-host, Christian Arcand, that's been doing the recent 10PM shifts on WEEI. (He's actually not bad. Doesn't seem to have any "schtick.") And even though it seemed like the last thing in the world he wanted to discuss, a couple irate callers kind of forced his hand to delve into this subject the last two times he's been on. With them complaining about what a "P.C." thing ESPN is doing, Arcand responded by acting like he was surprised it hadn't happened sooner.
Arcand mentioned how he used to follow Schilling on Facebook, but was blown away by some of the brazen (I assume racist) shit that Schilling had posted in response to incidents like Ferguson or Trayvon Martin. And when Arcand took exception to it, Schiling blocked him.
Again, this sounded like the last thing in the world that Arcand wanted to talk about (because it might make listeners want to target him for *his* politics, I assume), but my impression is that he thought that Schilling getting disciplined had been a long time coming.
SoSHer Gorton Fisherman:
ReplyDelete"NESN is like one of those terrible tourist trap restaurants that has mediocre, overpriced food and bad service but succeeds because it has a spectacular view. If it wasn't for their access to Red Sox broadcasts they'd be completely fucked. And because of the Sox they have little incentive to improve the rest of their shitty programming."
Most recent Red Sox to win at least 7 consecutive starts:
ReplyDeleteJoe Kelly, 2015
Josh Beckett, 2007
Curt Schilling, 2004
Pedro Martinez, 1999
Horse: That would not surprise me. I don't check out his FB, but several people/articles have referenced near constant anti-Muslim posts. Schilling's mindset seems much uglier than many of us would have thought.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Harper's bizarre line, when we had been talking about JBJ's crazy line a few weeks ago, I started looking for similar ones, and I found one that's kind of similar to Harper: 1-5-1-1 (4 walks): http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1911/B06110CHN1911.htm (The guy led the league in walks that year.)
