WEEI's Rob Bradford says Yes.
David Ortiz has meant more to the Red Sox than any player in the franchise's history.
Yes, I know, Ted Williams was a better hitter. He was the best hitter. Yes, I know, Carl Yastrzemski played longer and was a superior all-around player. Yes, I know, Pedro Martinez was more dominant during a concentrated period.
No matter. Ortiz has earned the right to be labeled the first face of the organization's Mount Rushmore. ...
It all adds up. Some will never accept it. I get it. Still, all things considered, I have to believe we're watching the player who has meant more to the Red Sox than any other player before him.

ReplyDeleteHard to argue against Bradfo here
.....tho DH haters will not agree.
He's definitely the most important player in *my* Red Sox history, which goes back to about 1978.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that Rob B. said "important" and not "valuable."
ReplyDeleteWas he just trying to avoid the more semantically fraught baseball adjective?
I'll go ahead and say it. Ortiz has been the most valuable too, IMHO.
Why choose between Ortiz and Pedro? Red Sox fans were so fortunate to have them both.
ReplyDeleteI never saw Williams play, but I grew up with Yaz. He made the Sox matter again for a long, long time. Although Papi shone brighter at times, Yaz made the Sox relevant again.
