G17: Astros 8, Red Sox 3

Red Sox - 100 001 01x - 3 9 0
Astros - 010 040 03x - 8 12 1
Colby Rasmus's grand slam with two outs in the fifth inning off Clay Buchholz (5.2-6-5-1-6, 106) snapped a 1-1 tie. Buchholz had two outs and a runner on first when he allowed a single to George Springer and then hit Carlos Correa. Rasmus then went deep for his sixth home run of the season.

The Red Sox came right back, bringing the potential tying run to the plate with one out in the top of the sixth. But they could score only one run, as Brock Holt hit a sacrifice fly to left. The weak-hitting Chris Young (who would be pinch-hit for in his next at-bat) grounded to third to end the rally.

Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz each had two hits for Boston.

  1. Scott Lauber, ESPN Staff Writer: "Xander Bogaerts won't hit today after getting hit on the right wrist last night. He doesn't have as much flexibility or mobility as he had hoped, but said he does not believe this will morph into a DL situation."

Tim Kurkjian, ESPN: "Cubs run differential is +67. Seventeen teams haven't scored 67 runs."

Also notes the record is +411 by the 1939 Yankees (967 RS, 556 RA), probably a better team than the super-famous 1927 bunch.

  2. Bradford stuff from WEEI:

Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters prior to Saturday's game in Houston that X-rays on Bogaerts right wrist didn't reveal any significant concerns.

Both Carson Smith and Eduardo Rodriguez appear getting close to re-joining the Red Sox. For Smith, his return might come as early the first game of the Yankees series at Fenway Park April 29 if all goes well in his stint with Triple-A Pawtucket this coming week.

Rodriguez will now head out to an affiliate to amp up his rehab. Farrell pointed out that the organization has 30 days to activate Rodriguez once he is sent out to an affiliate, while also noting the lefty would need between two and three starts on his rehab outing.
