Baseball Reference's Play Index has data back to 1913; the two older streaks came from the 2016 Red Sox Media Guide.
The Speaker streak didn't end July 18th. On that day, the Red Sox had scored 10 runs and were still batting with two outs in the bottom of the 1st when the game was stopped due to rain. Two games were played the following day, with Speaker getting a hit in game one but not game two. So the 19th must be the day. (I checked boxes for the 30-ish days before that, and though I didn't have a box for every game, there wasn't one box I saw where Speaker didn't have at least one hit. So I'm assuming this was the time of the streak, with it ending on 7/19 unless for some reason they said him not getting a hit in the suspended game on the 18th--if he didn't in fact get a hit--counted as the end of the streak.)
ReplyDeleteSource: Milwaukee Sentinel (always good for boxes)
This just in: before posting this I just tried Googling and came up with a post on the fenwaypark100.org site from 7/18/2012 that said "100 years ago yesterday" the streak ended. Meaning 7/17/1912. I checked the paper again and saw two linescores (no boxes) and two separate short accounts of that day's doubleheader, but no mention of the streak ending. But I gotta figure the Fenway100 people had the boxes and saw that the streak ended on 7/17.
Aren't you forgetting the Allan Wood hitting streak of about 2000 games !!! HaHa. Fancy he may start "looking" for hits now - recognition of records starts to affect your swing ? Been extraordinary though - particularly when you remember he struggled to hit a Barn Door a few months & years ago !!!
ReplyDeleteI saw that same Fenway100 comment, but made a mistake on what day they meant.
